General consensus is the media has a strong liberal bias. Era of very strong partisanship is getting worse under Pelosi and Reid. With Democrats increasing control of the Congress, can we afford Obama???? If Congress was Republican, I'd consider Obama!

Claims of a "liberal media bias" are not a common consensus, but consequences of a frequently-repeated falsehood. The major media in this country is owned and operated by large corporations. Not just Rupert Murdoch's empire... all of them. The very existence of right wing talk radio and Fox news put the lie to the claims of liberal bias. NONE of these media institutions will speak out if their advertisers object strenuously enough. Get a clue.

"Spreading the wealth?" That's what ordinary Americans like me have done with Bush's tax cuts on the already wealthy. The Wall Street Journal even notes how the gap between the top 1% of the households & the other 99% is greater today than at any time in more than 85 years. Scared of socialism, bunky? What's your name for rewarding Wall Street bankers & other despicable capitalist fools for their unprecedented greed & poor judgment w/taxpayer wages. Your "trickle-down" time has come & gone, & 99% of us are worse off.

If this SIMPLETON, this starry eyed Puke Liberal, thinks that The Slick One, who votes 'Present' instead of yea, or nay, who never saw a baby that wasn't a "burden", or that shouldn't have been aborted, who couldn't get a security clearance if his life depended on it. who's RACIST and Anti- American views, are right there in his books, for all to see, and who's alleigence is OBVIOUSLY elsewhere, is the best one to lead the country, then that's all the froof you need, that he is not. Get ready for JIMMY CARTER x 10.

You should live a different country. One that is more hateful and xenophobic. Like Iran.

Fresh thinking? The financial crisis we are in right now was caused by "fresh thinking"!! Good ideas are good ideas no matter when they were conceived. The struggle between socialist ideology and capitalist ideology will go on until capitalism wins. Why? Because socialism fails every time it is tried. It just failed in our financial markets and failed in a massive way. John McCain agrees with the left too often.

If Obama is a "socialist" (the last ditch effort thrown by the right wing) why did McCain support the bail-out package and is now launching a plan to rescue home ownership? Isn't THAT socialism?

A lot of people love to repeat the right wing mantra of "free market" and "deregulation" but when their homes get destroyed by a hurricane or a flood, they expect the government to bail them out, just like Wall Street now. Bush, McCain and the congress just killed Reaganomics because apparently, a little government intervention can and does solve some problems.

People making over 250K have to see their taxes go up because SOMEONE spent the last eight years giving Paris Hilton a tax break and NOT catching Bin Laden.

???Let's be honest: neither candidate has past experience that is relevant to being president, except that they have now both run large, multiyear, multimillion-dollar, 50-state campaigns??????

Mr. Zakaria I think what you mean is that Obama only has campaign to rely on. As if running for President makes you qualified to be President.

As for McCain, how about qualifications as Commander in Chief; his military experience, his twenty plus years dealing in foreign policies. In the role of vetoing bad legislation, McCain has never voted for bills with excessive, special interest spending. McCain plan of growth through small and large businesses instead growth through a socialist government is far superior.

?????? imagine how Americans would feel if they saw their country once again fulfilling its founding creed of equal opportunity, if they saw that there really were no barriers in their country??????

I don???t know what country you live in, I???m guessing it's in Europe, but Americans already feel that America offers equal opportunity for all. America, more than any other place, allows anyone to succeed as much they want, of course this a small requirement; you have to work for it, as oppose to having the government take wealth from others and hand it to you. If you feel there are better places than America, perhaps you should move there.

???Bill and Hillary Clinton were always careful not to stray too far from the country's comfort zone. Obama is pushing to change the parameters of that zone. That's leadership.???

This is where the race issue is truly troubling. Had Hillary gone as far left as Obama has, she would have received much greater criticism. But from the fear of being called a racist, many in the media have bailed out questioning Obama. Look at what happen to a US citizen (Plummer Joe) for having the nerve to question the One. Is this what an Obama administration will be about, trash any descending opinion? By the way, this will include you; if ever have the nerve to truly question Obama.

If enough voters fall for Obama???s slick talk, we???ll all get what we deserve--- don???t let it happen.

    Vote McCain/Palin.

jvinat is right about one thing....the author's example of how the two candidates ran their campaigns is only that, and example that suggests a general circumstance. But there are other examples, if jvinat really wants them.... McCain flew airplanes for a living for awhile. He crashed three or four of them, and was shot down in another. McCain also ran previous campaigns, including the one against Bush in which he was Swift-Boated and whipped like a stray dog... some of these tactics have slithered into McCain's current campaign, but the only other effect of his trouncing was that he eventually wagged his tail and bellied up to lick Bush's hand ....again like a whipped dog.

And please, lets talk about "socialism" after Bush's drug benefit boondoggle and trillion dollar corporate bailout. Don't look too closely at the current deficit, though.

      Republicans for Obama!

    >>Obama's ideas are also from a bygone era and they have

You've got to be kidding me. Reaganomics has been correct? This economic crisis began in 1980 when your utopian Friedman-omics and Goldwater conservativism was bought hook line and sinker by a gullible electorate.

Did you read Zakaria's article? Its not old Leftist ideas, its new practical ideas - green technology, education reform, and realistic foreign policy in the context of globalization. If McCain were dealing with these issues he might stand a chance. You're right, its impossible to change society completely. Hence, Obama is not talking about a Leftist conspiracy to overthrow American life. That would be unrealistic, stupid, and evil, none of which obama is. It would be almost as stupid as trying for 30 years to engineer a Right Wing conspiracy based on Neoconservatism, Neoliberalism and Evangelicalism.

Actually, I think this article was accurate, on point and well written.

First, the attack by Dencal26 is quite racist and promotes fascist propaganda that there are Americans who are Anti-American, accuses others of supporting terrorism because they don't agree with the ruling party (Bush Administration) and using fear-mongering to control others.

Americans first and foremost should be remembering that ???all men are created equal??? and that all American's are entitled to express their opinion (First Amendment). When one is attacked as unAmerican, supporting terrorists, and unpatriotic because they don't agree with the author denies the right of another the freedom to speak without retribution. Attacks like the one by Dencal26 inspires only hate for the author, encourages hate for Jews, and is reprehensible. This is exactly the divisive attitude and speech that been tearing away at the very fabric of this country and the authority of the US Constitution for the past 7 years.

Secondly, the economic policies of the Republican party for the last 8 years have worked only for the ultra rich and responsible for the economic bind we find ourselves in. It is precisely because Americans, it's Government and it's Corporations DONT pay-as-you go. Our economy has been largely based on borrowing and speculating over that borrowing that has collapsed wall street. Obviously, that has been working quite well.

One of the big problems with the Republican Party, Campaign and those who support Bush and the Republican Party (Including McCain) is that they are not the least bit objective and don't concern themselves with the very tenets of our Constitution or the well-being of the majority, never mind being unbiased or putting any real value on truth.

The "communist" comment is anal in origin.

These days even China and Vietnam are communist in name only. You people are out of ammo.

    SHARE THE WEALTH
FACT: Between 2000 and 2004, Barak and Michelle Obama gave less then 1% of their 1.2 MILLION DOLLAR SALARY to charitable causes. That is way BELOW the national average of giving. Yet amazingly, Obamas contributions shot up when he announced he was running for President. This is the man who wants to take a portion of OUR paycheck and spread it around. Obama seems to have no problem with spreading the wealth as long as it's not HIS wealth that gets the spreading. Now who does Mr. Obama plan on initiating his plan of action, Charles Rangel, top Democrat on the House Tax Committee. The same Charles Rangel who has somehow forgotten to pay taxes on his villa in the Dominican Republic that he has been renting out for over 14 years. He called it an oversight. Now to be honest with you, I would much prefer to spread mjy own wealth over giving it over to a cheapskate (Obama) and a tax dodging criminal, Rangel. And by the way, this "TAX THE RICH" "SHARE THE WEALTH" program was already tried. It was called the failed administration of Jimmy Carter. Thats when the rich were taxed and they placed their money in TAX FREE government bonds and off-shore accounts so it could not work in the American economy. That was the time of 16 percent interest rates and hyper-inflation. If anybody forgot that is Obamas plan of change. Again, no thank you

Man, you people are out of arguments! Are you suuuuurrre you want to talk about charities? Cindy McCain stole drugs out of her own charity!!! For her personal use! I hate to bring this up because I believe in redemption but geez, somebody has to set you nuts straight.

I read most of your articles and find them very informative. But by the time I was done reading this one I was moved to tears. I also have a boys and they has great aspirations. So when you said, "I admit that I will feel more confident about his future if a man named Barack Obama became president of hte United States" I connected. I don't want either of my boys' future limited by their last names or skin color. If they work hard they too can be rewarded with the american dream. I am a hispanic mother living in the south working a full time job & going to school at night doing my part for those boys. My husband has a full time job and is working to complete his masters. Now I want a president that will do its part.

Four wretched years ago, I watched as my country re-elected a deplorable leader after he had demonstrated gross misjudgment and a world view that most kindergartners would probably have no trouble grasping. I watched the face of America--once the leader of the globalizing world, and a respected hallmark of progress--become bloodied and muddied and disfigured by our we-don't-need-ya international policies. What I see in John McCain is a continuation of that same mindset: bully the world, win through brute force. Barack Obama, on the other hand, comes to us with an intelligent, savvy, modern mind. Yes, he is eloquent. Yes, he projects an air of confidence and conviction in calculated reason. That is exactly what we need in a president at this time. Up until Dubya???s first election, I felt like we were heading toward the future???a future of scientific advances, greater social prosperity, and ideological maturity. We were the world???s best friend. Eight years later, we are the bottom of a terrible backslide into ignorance. Electing Barack Obama is our first step back up the mountain.

Well we're getting down to the final countdown and its not suprising to see daily endorsements popping out of the Newsweek bureau of the Obama campaign. In the last 2 weeks what we've seen out of the Obama campaign and its surrogates in the media is the following: 1. Scream Racism, like they did with Hillary, at every criticism or question posed to them. 2. Make sure no swing states are lost by a few 10s of thousands of votes...aka...ACORN Fraud. 3. Obama did sum up his economic policy in an innocent answer to poor Joe the Plumber..."Share the Wealth". Using the tax code to play Robin Hood. That is hardly a cutting edge proposal its just one that has led to disaster every time its been tried, however, I have to say I'm intrigued...if it means I can get a couple of million from Bill Gates and Warren Buffet who don't need it...then I'm in favor, however, the normal pattern is for it to get swallowed by government and payoffs and nobody ever sees it. Hardly new cutting edge policies. However, unlike the democrats in 2000 unless Obama wins through clear voter fraud I will support him as a member of the loyal opposition. I think the country is probably strong enough to survive Jimmy Obama II, and Jimmy I led to Ronald Reagan.....the country just had to go through a lot of risk and pain first.....but we should all be agreed that if the election is honest....the country doesn't need to kind of behavior the democrats displayed.

The claim is that the MSM has a strong Obama bias. Well, many of us do. We are tired of the call for smaller government so that the eye of the country can grow stronger and exercise more powe. The irony of the Republicans wanting smaller government (with their party and ideology at the certer) is really a grab to give their party more power by virtue of a tighter control of the power. In other words, they deisre to be a category 5 government with the eye of the government being narrow and stronger. Thank God the world is awakening to the danger of this clarion call to spin into ourselves.

Most firms pay no income taxes - Congress
Study finds that the majority of domestic and foreign corporations in the United States avoid paying federal income taxes.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Nearly two-thirds of U.S. companies and 68% of foreign corporations do not pay federal income taxes, according to a congressional report released Tuesday.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) examined samples of corporate tax returns filed between 1998 and 2005. In that time period, an annual average of 1.3 million U.S. companies and 39,000 foreign companies doing business in the United States paid no income taxes - despite having a combined $2.5 trillion in revenue.
The study showed that 28% of foreign companies and 25% of U.S. corporations with more than $250 million in assets or $50 million in sales paid no federal income taxes in 2005. Those companies totaled a combined $372 billion in sales for the largest foreign companies and $1.1 trillion in revenue for the biggest U.S. companies.
