          (CNN) -- Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin likes to portray herself as an average American working mother.
          But how many typical moms get $150,000 worth of merchandise from stylish stores and have strangers pay for it?

          This week's revelation about the purchases was just one more surprise in the fast rise and apparent fall of the Republican Party's sudden superstar.

          Remember, it was only two months ago that Palin was just the popular governor of Alaska, still an obscure figure in American politics. That changed in late August when John McCain chose her as his running mate.

          It seems her family didn't have enough clothes either, because suddenly there was some serious shopping.

          A single visit to the fashionable department store Neiman Marcus cost more than $75,000, but that was only half of the total. The bills ultimately went to the Republican Party, which means that although they probably didn't know it, party donors paid for them.

          Palin's problems go beyond clothes, though, to her very candidacy. In recent days, prominent Republicans, from former Secretary of State Colin Powell to Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan, have publicly criticized her lack of experience.

          Ordinary Americans agree. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that in early September, when Palin was just starting out as a candidate, 47 percent of voters had a positive opinion of her, compared to 27 percent who felt negatively.

          Now 47 percent have negative feelings, compared with 38 percent who feel positively.

          And the new poll found that concern about Palin's qualifications is voters' top concern about McCain, ahead of every other issue in the election.

          Voting day is less than two weeks away and most polls suggest that Barack Obama is headed for victory. The surprise is that Palin went from being McCain's best asset to his biggest problem. And the Republicans don't have much time, or an obvious way, to fix it.

    In the exchange with "Joe the plumber" we found out that Obama really is as radical as his early political acquaintances, Davis, Ayers, Wright, etc., and that he is into the failed economic policy of wealth redistribution. Obama's tax and spending plans alone would be bad enough, but add Reid and Pelosi to the mix, with the three of them controlling both houses of Congress and the executive branch without any effective restraint, and you have something that should causes concern even among moderate Democrats.

    Obama and a supermajority of Democrats simply is not the change we need, nor is it change we can afford.

    Obama's programs require him to tax, and his health care plan alone is a substantial hidden tax on all business, large an small. In reality, it does not really matter who he taxes, those taxes are going to be passed through the economy. He has to tax, because it is they only way he can pay for his massive social engineering experiments. Any first year economics student knows that taxation is a tool used to contract an economy experiencing inflation, because it reduces demand by reducing the amount of money individuals and businesses have to spend. It is contractionary, which is exactly what you do not want to do when the problem is that the economy is contracting already into recession. Like Hoover and FDR, Obama's plans will only make it worse for longer.

      Remember, it was only two months ago that Palin was just the popular governor of Alaska, still an obscure figure in American politics. That changed in late August when John McCain chose her as his running mate.

      Within days, she was generating the biggest excitement the McCain campaign had ever enjoyed, captivating the Republican Party, swelling the crowds at its rallies and drawing media coverage that overshadowed the Democrats.

      One McCain advisor told me then that one of the practical problems she discovered as she criss-crossed the country was that she didn't bring enough clothes.

      It seems her family didn't have enough clothes either, because suddenly there was some serious shopping.

      A single visit to the fashionable department store Neiman Marcus cost more than $75,000, but that was only half of the total. The bills ultimately went to the Republican Party, which means that although they probably didn't know it, party donors paid for them.

      Palin's problems go beyond clothes, though, to her very candidacy. In recent days, prominent Republicans, from former Secretary of State Colin Powell to Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan, have publicly criticized her lack of experience.

      Ordinary Americans agree. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that in early September, when Palin was just starting out as a candidate, 47 percent of voters had a positive opinion of her, compared to 27 percent who felt negatively.

      Now 47 percent have negative feelings, compared with 38 percent who feel positively.

      And the new poll found that concern about Palin's qualifications is voters' top concern about McCain, ahead of every other issue in the election.

      Voting day is less than two weeks away and most polls suggest that Barack Obama is headed for victory. The surprise is that Palin went from being McCain's best asset to his biggest problem. And the Republicans don't have much time, or an obvious way, to fix it.

    Mcshame said that he's been fighting for this counrty since he was 17 years old, what other choice did he have ? he could have stayed in school and applied himself like others, but no he went into service where he knows he'll be treated well because of his connection.

    Being a prisoner of war is not a test to be president of USA. Does that mean that all prisoners in this country are fit to run this country? beacuse I know of some that have been through worse than mcshame. even while in the military, he was not in position of power or authority over any one and did not do well either. So where did he get this experice or test ?

    Everyone know that every president has to learn to do the job because there is no other way.

    mcshame get hold of yourself and bow out gracefully before you ruin further the lettle reputauion you have left. You are now toxic and will be for a long time..

        So McCain was fortunate enough to get himself born into a wealthy family, he, no doubt, pulled some strings or arranged to do that while he was still in the spirite world before he was born; I'm sure he asked God to make sure his parents had enough money to spoil him by sending him to the very best schools, and to add a little spice to his life, and to be sure he had sympathy points going for him when he ran for president, he asked to have himself captured by enemies and, for good measure, please do toss in some torture.           Always wanted to see Iceland, but at my own leisure, and while Fire's invitation is intriguing, I think I'll pass for now; perhaps another time, and as for my eariler post which you cited, lets just say I'm wishy washy, lol, ---no, not really, just playing around with some ideas & options, should I become dis-enchanted with things here...but, in reality, I am hoping our country will get its act together, and I'd like to stay and be a part of the repair network; besides, moving to another country isn't really the answer since the problem we are dealing with concerning terrorist affects the entire world, not just America, it a far different war than we've ever had to face before, but one we can win if we work together as a team, and not as enemies within.

      Yes, change is good, but it comes with conditions, and we have to decide if they are the conditions we can, comfortably, live with. Everyone has an opinion on who or what is best, and when disagreement starts, then accusations follow, and we need to keep some decorum and realize that just because someone does not agree with you, does not mean that person is biased against anyone for their particular ethnic affiliation or that we feel that person is not a nice enough person in every other way, but we do not agree that they are the correct one to be leading our country at this point in time. Its not about changing just for the sake of change, its about changing for the correct reasons, and at the proper time. I am very much impressed with my St. Bernard's ability and intelligence, but I would not want him to try to lead my country. Keep in mind, Adolph Hitler was intelligent, but he was NOT smart, and there is a difference. Intelligence without common sense can be a dangerous thing. The best of luck to all of us, and hope your confidence in your candidate is not mis-placed, just as I hope mine isn't.

LISTEN UP, HE DOES NOT CARE FOR THE POOR OR THE BLACKS, OR FOR ANY OF US, FOR THAT MATTER, HE CARES FOR HIMSELF! HE WANTS TO BE IN THE WHITE HOUSE AT ANY COST, AND WILL SAY WHATEVER IT TAKES TO CONVINCE YOU TO VOTE FOR HIM, EVEN SOME VERY SMART BLACK PEOPLE KNOW THIS, AND ARE WISE TO WHAT HE IS DOING, SO WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE REST OF YOU?! It's amazing to me how you (and the rest of the other right wing nuts here) know so much about the ulterior motives of Barack and Michelle Obama and yet couldn't see George Bush's or the MESS he and his cronies were getting us into. I find that so fascinating. Really, I do. I'd like to recommend that you guys take up fortune-telling when your jobs are lost due to this fiasco G.B. and friends have led us into.

        Fire, maybe "Crack" is your choice of a way to feel good, but it isn't mine, I do not need any type of fake euphoric high to appreciate my country, and so sorry to hear that you do, but I get my joy from good clean living, and from the knowledge that even if the whole world falls apart, my place in Heaven is secured by Jesus, And, its not about trying to keep things the same; we both know nothing ever stays the same, change is something that happens on a daily basis. So, no, I'm not against change, as long as its a positive change for everyone. What I object to is someone attempting to make decisions that effect me and my family, which THEY think is best, when in reality, its just another way of control---velvet glove control, but just as deadly. Our country was founded on FREEDOM---the right to chose for ourselves how WE want to live our lives, and how WE want to handle our money, our health care, ect. When you turn control of your life over to someone else, you've lost the most important part of yourself---your self pride in accomplishment, and without that you become nothing more than a kept pet, a pet without any say so in your own destiny.
