Most firms pay no income taxes - Congress
Study finds that the majority of domestic and foreign corporations in the United States avoid paying federal income taxes.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Nearly two-thirds of U.S. companies and 68% of foreign corporations do not pay federal income taxes, according to a congressional report released Tuesday.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) examined samples of corporate tax returns filed between 1998 and 2005. In that time period, an annual average of 1.3 million U.S. companies and 39,000 foreign companies doing business in the United States paid no income taxes - despite having a combined $2.5 trillion in revenue.
The study showed that 28% of foreign companies and 25% of U.S. corporations with more than $250 million in assets or $50 million in sales paid no federal income taxes in 2005. Those companies totaled a combined $372 billion in sales for the largest foreign companies and $1.1 trillion in revenue for the biggest U.S. companies.

Obama is a "decent family man, citizen.................
"He is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared about as President of the United States.......

Those are John McCain own words.....................

If he said Obama is decent and nothing to be scared and now he says differently HE LIED TO YOU THEN OR HE IS LYING NOW.....

If he can tell you something one day and another opposite the other day, how could you trust his word? How do you know he is not coming with another story if elected? He has not kept his word more than 3 days in a row..........

What is he hiding, why is he lyig to you?

How different is he lying than Bush?

    • Posted By: Unbridled Truth @ 10/22/2008 8:55:06 AM

The difference between Bush lying and McCain lying is that McCain's pre-election lying is much more pervasive, much more transparent (for those who pay attention and check the facts) and McCain lies have so pushed the envelope, it has angered even the press.

Zakaria, stop switching bandwagons, you were the biggest supporter of Neo-conservatives. You pleged full support to those right wings and now you are trying to convince us that you are for Obama. We do have a short memory but not that short. Your analysis is full of crap and i can't believe you switched sides so fast. You supported everything Karl Rove had suggested and were a staunch ally of their idealogy. So when the Neo-conservatives didn't sell anymore, you decided to change direction to make money, you analysis is a complete failure.

The government has to tax somebody, or else it can't pay for its military, social services (Soc. Sec., Medicare, etc.).

If we don't raise taxes, which programs do we cut? The largest single expenditures are the aforementioned military and social services. Defense accounts for 20% of federal spending, while Soc. Sec. / Medicare account for 41%. Assorted other spending accounts for 32%.

If we don't cut taxes, we need to raise taxes. Who pays for these services? Who benefits?

I'd argue that the rich owe more for the payment of the military than any other group. The military is not staffed by wealthy people, but the wealthy are safe to live better than most, thanks to the military.

Social Security and Medicare are slightly skewed against the poor because of the ~100K cap on income tax. Is it fair for richer (and probably healthier) people to pay for the illnesses of poorer people? I don't know.

Nevertheless, a case can be made that for at least 1/5 of federal spending, the rich ought to pay more. Or the military should be cut back.

Yes, Mr. Zakaria, my vote too has been from the beginning for Barack Obama! I always believed that he was a "phenomenon" and not an 'enigma' as many Americans kept feeling for months - and some still do. My support for him is not because of his 'color' or his so-called 'exotic' background or the 'fact' that he is 'different' than all other presidents on the dollar bills so far, but solely because of his Leadership abilities: Barack Obama is a Genuine Leader and not a politician, 'only', which is of course a rarity in today's global polity. Moreover, he is not only a 'Leader', he is a Global Leader! Americans are really fortunate to have him! Wish India and every country of this world had their own Barack Obama! May he live long and serve the US and and the world for years and years to come!

Stating that Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act wasn't what caused the meltdown, and noting that "economists on both sides of the political spectrum have suggested that the act has probably made the crisis less severe than it might otherwise have been."

    • Posted By: Unbridled Truth @ 10/22/2008 1:26:48 AM

I beg to differ. The problem with the credit crunch is due to mortgage back securities. That is a bigger problem then lending to people who could not afford their houses. If it were that simple, it would be easily fixed by making the banks simply re-negotiate the mortgages. Gramm authored the bill that made the once illegal credit-debt-swaps legal and it was signed into office by Clinton in 2k. Gramm, one of McCain's good buddies, was also deeply involved in the Enron Scale and authored McCain's economic plan. Vote for McCain and you Vote for a plan authored by a corrupt politician

From: Jordan C. Fan, Prophet Of Environment.

My message is urgent. I am writing to you hoping you can convey my message to your fellow Americans. I am a Prophet and Prophecies are well established and have been accepted by many people worldwide. The Environment is in no mood to deal with people such as Barack Obama. If Obama was elected, the Environment will go ahead and let all Americans suffer like they have never been before then destroy the United States in less than two (2) years without mercy. During the Bill Clinton presidential administration the United States was trying to the Environment saying Democrats are concern about Environmental
protection while increase pollution and drastically wasting the
world's natural resources. The current Republican Administration has in fact contributed to Environmental protection and resource conservation much more than their Democrat predecessor. Such deceptions cannot be forgiven. John McCain is the only chance the United States have. If he is gone I, as Prophet, will have no choice but to prophesy the final fall of the USA. I urge all of you to take My Prophecy seriously otherwise all you media people will be punished. If you don't believe me you should investigate further. I am the true leader of the world and will decide who is going to the U. S. president. Electing Obama will do more harm to himself and the Black community than good.

Wow buddy ... I don't even know where to start with this one. Seems to me that we've got some confusion about the facts.

Bush has filled his administration with former lobbyists and other corporate types in order to rewrite environmental laws so as to favor industry. When Bush was governor of Texas, that state was rated 49th out of 50 in per-capita spending on the environment. Texas became the most polluted state in the union.

By the way, in case you didn't know it, invading someone, and dropping lots of bombs on them is not exactly environmentally friendly. Just ask the folks in Baghdad.

As far as the US being destroyed in two years goes, Bush has already given us a good shove down that dark ally. McCain and (God help us!) Palin will finish the job in they get into office.

When it comes to being a prophet ... uh ... you'll be OK when the swelling goes down.

      Good Luck

Thank goodness for the global audience's conscious listening and returning readership of Mr. Zakaria's editorial expression in Foreign Exchange, GPS and Newsweek. Bull! you are just another Obama Camp employee blogger with your predictable, formula responses that have gotten so transparent and tired. Devoid of any creativity! These are some examples of the typical posts that might come from your nefarious organization:
      "White senior female supporting Obama!"
"Life long Republican, retired Marine, now supporting Obama!"
"Former Neo-Nazi sympathizer who now supports Obama!"
The only line of attack that your camp has had is to say that people don't want more of the last eight years. And attempting to tie McCain to the Bush Administration because he happens to be a member of the same party! Talk about scare tactics! The Obama administration can't offer any solutions or plans that it's administration will do for America because it does not have any! It can only point to the Bush administration and say, " Nobody could be as bad as that guy, so you should vote for me, because I look good by comparison! And since John McCain is a member of the same party as that big bad boogy man Bush, it might remind you of the last eight years!" So, with that logic, you might as well say, " Vote for me because the nightmares of the Bush administration will come back to haunt you otherwise. It does not matter that I could be worse than any president in history. At least I am a fresh new face and I speak well from a teleprompter and look good in a suit. In other words, I am a poster boy president and the sight of me and my charismatic rhetoric will make the world heal and everyone will come together and sing Cumbayah!" God save America! The superficiality of this shallow culture of " American idol-esque" nonsense is just sickening!

Q: Is it true John McCain voted with George Bush 95 percent of the time?
The Obama campaign keeps claiming McCain has voted with President Bush 95 percent of the time. Is this true? Is this significant?

A:Yes, it's true, according to Congressional Quarterly's assessment of McCain's voting record.
Sen. Barack Obama has attempted to use the Arizona senator's voting record against him in statements like this:
Barack Obama (June 3): It's not change when John McCain decided to stand with George Bush 95 percent of the time, as he did in the Senate last year.
The claim is true. According to Congressional Quarterly's Voting Studies, in 2007 McCain voted in line with the president's position 95 percent of the time ??? the highest percentage rate for McCain since Bush took office ??? and voted in line with his party 90 percent of the time. However, McCain's support of President Bush's position has been as low as 77 percent (in 2005), and his support for his party's position has been as low as 67 percent (2001).

    The 14 characteristics of Fascism
    http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Fascism/14_Characteristics_Fascism.html
     1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism -- Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
    2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights -- Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to 'look the other way' or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
    3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause -- The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
    4. Supremacy of the Military -- Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
    5. Rampant Sexism -- The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and antigay legislation and national policy.
    6. Controlled Mass Media -- Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or through sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in wartime, is very common.
    7. Obsession with National Security -- Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

ooops. Sorry about the duplicate post. Browser error.

  • Posted By: Unbridled Truth @ 10/22/2008 1:10:59 AM

    8. Religion and Government are Intertwined -- Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
    9. Corporate Power is Protected -- The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
    10. Labor Power is Suppressed -- Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely or are severely suppressed.
    11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts -- Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.
    12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment -- Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses, and even forego civil liberties, in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
    13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption -- Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions, and who use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

Sounds an awful like the US government!

    McCAIN HEALTH IN QUESTION...............

The Armed Forces pathologists suggested that the left-temple melanoma had spread from another melanoma, known as a metastasis or satellite lesion. ???The vertical orientation of this lesion,??? the report said, ???with only focal epidermal involvement above it is highly suggestive of a metastasis of malignant melanoma and may represent a satellite metastasis of S00-9572-A,??? which is the ???skin, left temple, lateral??? biopsy.

The pool report was by nature unable to provide a complete portrait of Mr. McCain???s recent medical history. It left several questions, including about the number of biopsies and when they were done. On Aug. 18, 2000, Dr. John D. Eckstein, Mr. McCain???s personal physician at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, noted in Mr. McCain???s records that there were two biopsies of the left temple. Dr. Eckstein???s note did not say where and when the biopsies were performed. The Armed Forces report cited one biopsy, so presumably a second was performed in Scottsdale. The Armed Forces pathologists said a melanoma had developed over a skin scar whose origin was unclear..........

The Armed Forces pathologists did not speak in the teleconference in May 2008, and questions raised by their report have remained unanswered. The selected reporters did not ask about that report, and the Mayo Clinic doctors did not discuss it. A complete Mayo pathology report was apparently not included in the pool summary...........

If Mr. McCain???s 2000 left-temple melanoma was a metastasis, as the Armed Forces pathologists??? report suggested, it would be classified as Stage III. The reclassification would change his statistical odds for survival at 10 years from about 60 percent to 36 percent, according to a published study..............

McCAIN HEALTH PROBLEMS = PALIN S PRESIDENCY! HELLOOOO!!!!!!!

Maybe all those biopsies are the reason for his change in character, erratic behavior and choosing Palin as a running mate.

God Bless America! My husband says I am racist for being proud that our country - in particular the Democratic Party - has nominated a non-white for President of the United States. My husband may be right, because as an American I share our cultural disease like everybody else and I would be lying if I said "I didn't notice Barack Obama was black." But come on! This is a great country. Isn't it true that any little child can grow up to be... anything she wants?

As a fat, white, middle class American woman, I am truly inspired by Barack Husein Obama and the amazingly strong campaign that he has run. He has constantly required me to do the work of democracy. I cannot rely on him to take care of this country for me. I have to get out there everyday and canvass for Obama - for a real change in government - for a real outsider - for someone who is not cynical. If I don't work hard for Obama then I am not living the promise of American democracy. I am inspired, I have tasted the nectar of hope, and I am happy.

I am not thrilled with either candidate so it comes done to core beliefs. I believe in family, God, and country. The liberals want to take God out of everything our forefathers fought for. Secondly, I am tired of liberals always saying how bad our country is. Obama was hesitant to wear a flag lapel. This country rocks... I was born to poor unhealthy parents, went into a foster home for 10 years but have been able to provide and raise a wonderful family. Again... I am not confident McCain is my man.... but I do know how I live my life, politicians and lawyers scare the heck out of me and it seems Obama is one of the best of both. Be careful what you wish for.

    • Posted By: worldsfairdesign @ 10/20/2008 2:45:28 PM

Our forefathers didn't found this country for God. You're free to be whatever religion you want, but our government is secularly based.

and, being uncritical of your country leads to totalitarianism. I love my country, I hate George Bush, Dick Cheney, Bill Kristol, Fox News and Right wing conservatism. You don't own America. America wasn't founded by Ronald Reagan.

I do own a piece of it.... and would like to continue to do so. What I have worked hard for I think most people could do the same. I think it has been our politicians from both parties that have done the pillaging. I can balance my checkbook.... they should do the same. In the end neither candidate is squeaky clean it just seems that one is carrying a little more of the kind of thing I could not find myself caught up in.... I choose the lesser of evils.

        • Posted By: Unbridled Truth @ 10/22/2008 12:40:26 AM

Well said. As unfortunate as it is, it is true and I think a lot of us are choosing the lesser of two evils because there is no other choice. I for one saw much of the problems we face today coming, and I am very concerned for our future and the future of our children because of the direction that we are going in. It is not only class warfare that we need to worry about but our very freedom and the rights that Americans have so cherished are in danger. I think if Obama is really our only chance right now at, maybe, turning things around.

Why do you hate the idea of America being kept safe by our military? You guys really should start playing for the home team.

American corporations sending our jobs overseas so they can increase their profits by employing people who work for slave wages. American wages dropping and having their salaries cut. An exploding unemployment rate (10% in my county). Health care costs that are increasing at the tune 18% a year while the top 23 CEOs of health insurance companies, Rx,companies and Labs made a combined income of 559 BILLION dollars over the past 5 years while 50 million Americans who can't afford health insurance or are under insured because of the same greed which created the financial crisis. Watching the CEOs of Fanny Mae, Freddie Mac, Bears Stern, and AIG (to name a few) walking away with millions of dollars after their collapsing their companies and the economy while millions of Americans have just lost their retirement funds. The US Government hiring the very people who caused this problem to solve the problem. The fact that Social Security will and Medicaid will be non-existent when I retire and I am forced to pay into it any way. Warrentless Wiretapping. Guantanamo Bay. The US officials torturing prisoners in violation of international law. The illegal invasion of Iraq. The lies that convinced Americans to support that illegal invasion. The fact more soldiers have died in Iraq than on 9/11. Hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi men, women and children killed or maimed as a result of the US invasion of a sovereign nation without provocation. US tax dollars Building schools, roads and infrastructure in Iraq while our infrastructure is falling apart. The increase in the National Debt of nearly 5 trillion dollars during the past 8 years (not including the Trillion+ on this bail out). The ever increasing divide between the obscenely rich elite and the rapidly disappearing middle class. The slow but sure destruction of the American way of life and the American dream.

Apparently, it is unpatriotic and anti-American to take the words of the Declaration to heart and speak out against despotism, tyranny and the rising head of fascism if the despotism, tyranny and fascism is perpetrated by the US Government.

I guess you would have me ???Be Happy??? about it all, keep quite about the fact the McCain's policies are the same Republican policies that have been slowly but surely destroying the very fabric of this nation and not care what all of this means for the country (and majority of Americans).

I'm a little surprised that Fahreed Zakaria, the marketing guru, hasn't caught on to the idea of America as a marketing concept. We had a product we want to "sell" - namely democracy. We have a target market - the Islamic world. If we want to "sell" democracy, to our target audience, we need to think of who would best represent our product.

McCain looks like the guy who bombed your village during a wedding celebration and killed half of your relatives. Worse, he has permitted his followers and Sarah Palin to demonize Muslims, Arabs and people with funny names - like Hussein. McCain is the last person I'd hire as a marketing representative to the Middle East.

To many people in the Middle East, Obama looks a little like a trusted friend of the family or everyone's favorite cousin. He even shares two names with millions of people in the Middle East: Barack, which means blessing, and Hussein, which means both good and handsome at the same time. In addition, Obama has the ability to reach out and relate to the young - and let's not forget that the Islamic world, demographically, is a very young world.

If we are thinking of marketing - than Obama is the man for the job.
