Yes,there are enough aspects of the policies of the Democrats to place ''socialist ''labels on them that will in fact damage the very people Alter claims to embrace [he does no such thing. Alter does not give a damn for anyone not living in Manhattan or Malibu, who makes less than 30 grand a year,is a NASCAR fan, listens to country and western,or lives in a Red state]. To wit,a number of ominous warning signs that lead to government-by-socialism.

One. Todays Wall St. Journal interviewing Obamas energy policy adviser and who will be his pick to lead the EPA upon taking office,a Mr. Jason Grumet. Grumet will move to classify carbon as a ''dangerous gas''without congressional advise and consent and will force the shutdown of all power plants deemed ''polluting''in any form. This goes for privately-owned motorcycles,chainsaws,power-boats,outboards,weed-eaters,lawnmowers,wood-burning stoves, and other appliances that emit carbon.''The EPA will initiate those rulemakings'' sayeth Grumet.

Two. Last Thursdays USA TODAY criticism of the Democrat Party/unions ''Card Check''program,a key platform of their support of Democrat candidates in general and Obama in particular. This device will force shops with more than ten employees to unionize under the demands of the Locals. By ending secret ballot, those not in line with the desires of their union masters can be publically exposed. By the avowed removal of Section 14 b of the TAFT-HARTLEY Act, [Pelosi-Waxman] ''right-to-work''employment policies will be outlawed in all American states.

Three. The Democrat-led Energy and Commerce Committee in the House seeks to amend the 1873 Mining Act by levying increased royalties on mining in public lands with the express desire to end mining in the United States. Superfunds paid by the now -unemployed taxpayers and state beneficiaries of federal funding will close and clean these areas to be turned over to federal land management arms[BLM],that will force out those using the land for livestock grazing and other purposes ironically ''returning the land'' to ''the people''[Pelosi-Scharkowsky]. Obviously, the block will come in the form of mining state Democrats, the most powerful being Reid of Nevada, but even he may not be able to overturn a Obama veto of a counter-proposal. It will be here, that the first areas of American-on-American [enforcement arms] violence will probably occur, similar to the western states ''Sagebrush Rebellion''in the 1980s,that created such bad publicity for Congress, that they backed down.

Four. Increased embrasure of UN policy over that of American law. The internationalization of American law will progress under this administration and congress. UN treaties on speech, small arms, poverty, force, race, and other aspects of this bodies policies will be used to effect changes in our own laws here. Where Clinton could not succeed with KYOTO,for instance in 1999,Obama can do so with a Democrat congress.

Refute it then, using non-partisan citation [though you cannot, and thus are forced to fall back on useless non sequitur, signifying, nothing].

Look and listen for yourself. Hear Obama in his own words discusses his links to both ACORN and the mortgage meltdown, and praises bundling and securitizing mortgages by banks as a means to float loans to the poor. Never mind the link commentators point of view, just listen to what Obama says in his own words. A picture is worth a thousand words. Maybe more in the case of the last half of the second link.

Jim, as usual you are trying to twist a fact to make it mean something different.

Your quotes from Obama's books are more or less accurate, but they are taken completely out of context. In Dreams from my Father, Obama writes at length about how he went through an adolescent period of rebellion and identity crisis. He spent some time identifying with his black heritage and feeling how victimized blacks have been. If you read the whole book, you will see how he realized that it was immature for him to stay stuck in these feelings. He realized that he needed to do something constructive, rather than complain about other people being destructive. And he needed to see both sides of the story, both black and white, since he is both black and white. Actually, Jim, you could take a lesson from that and learn how to be more objective.

You quote from Audacity of Hope is taken from a speech Obama gave after 9/11. He said that if the US government starts rounding up Muslims without cause and without giving them due process of law, that he would stand up for the Muslims rather than just watch our government put them in prison camps like we did to the Japanese Americans in WWII. In fact, the Bush administration created it's own internment camp and called it Guantanamo Bay. While there are certainly many guilty terrorists held in Guantanamo, there are also many innocent American citizens who have been held illegally for years without even being charged with any crime. They have been tortured by our government. Some of them have died.

Recently the Supreme Court ruled against the Bush administration in the matter of Guantanamo Bay. The Supreme Court Justices were NOT on the side of the terrorists. They were on the side of the Geneva Convention, that says you can not torture POWs, and on the side of US laws that state you can not imprison a person without charging them with a crime and bringing them to trial. I'm sure that like most Americans, the Justices who voted against the illegal, immoral doings at Guantanamo did not feel sympathy for the terrorists. They felt sympathy for the laws of AMERICA, the land of the FREE, where even rat finks get a fair trial.

One of the things that makes America GREAT is Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press. Your blog implies that if McCain wins the Presidency, Obama's books will be banned from public libraries. Heaven helps us! If this is true, it would be one heck of a reason to vote against McCain. Come to think of it, Sarah Palin tried to ban books from the Wasilla Public Library, and fired the Head Librarian when she refused to comply. Maybe it is true.

God save us from small minded people like you, Jim Johnson.

General Powell felt the need to speak out against a Republican party which has grown narrow. It is becoming a party of division and exclusion. A party that thrives on wedge issues and encourages Americans to question each other's patriotism. Today John McCain is trying to revive McCarthyism by raising the spectre of the socialist boogeyman. Palin divides the country into pro and anti American parts. This is not who we are or who we should be. United we stand..

The GOP is grasping at straws. They have nothing substantive against Obama, but boy are they good at making up lies. He's a socialist, he's a terrorist, he's a Muslim! This is the leading Karl Rove tactic for years, and if America falls for this again we should be ashamed of ourselves. Not to mention the obvious fact that this is all a smokescreen to keep the focus off of the economy, anf off the fact that Palin has been found guilty of abusing the power of her office, and that she is in contempt of court for obstruction of justice. After Nixon and Clinton, Americans are to some extent jaded, but really, would you want a VP who refuses to attend hearings in her own defense, and instructs her employees not to testify?

This year, the GOP offers you an angry old man and a woman who, while personable, is desperately uniformed on national and international issues. Both of them are far right politically. McCain used to be a maverick, but since 2004 he's voted 90% with Bush. McCain's policies are not original or reformist, despite how he's tried to co-opt Obama's popular message of change. Please go to the websites of both of the candidates and read their platforms. Obama's Blueprint for Change has more good ideas than McCain's plan. Compare them yourself. Obama's basic premise is that tax dollars should be spent to make America stronger and to improve the lives and well being of our people. For example, he uses education programs to train a new technology workforce, contributing to energy independence, creating jobs and improving the economy. When you read McCain's plan you will find no over-arching design to get America back on track. Instead you'll find more tax cuts for the wealthy, de-regulation of the health care industry, and a stated intent to overturn Roe v. Wade.

I'm a Republican. Although I embrace some forward-thinking social values, in the past I've rarely voted Democrat. My thinking was that since Republicans grow robust economies, by voting Republican I endorsed a plan that would grow wealth for our nation, and then we'd be able to afford social programs. It was a good strategy for a couple decades, but I have to say that the tenure of W. Bush has changed my mind. Not only is there nothing fiscally responsible about today's GOP, the insidious alignment of the party with religious intolerance has really turned me off.

On the other hand, the intelligent luminous thought of Barack Obama has ignited my patriotism. I want a President who puts America first and can get the economy back on track. In my mind, values voting takes a back burner when we are faced with a meltdown of the economy. It is time for a change, a real change. The Republicans have controlled the Presidency for 28 of the past 40 years, but they have fallen down on the job. The Democrats have a stellar candidate this year, and I am voting for Obama.

Only the zealots backing Obama are the ones that do not understand he is not ready to be President. Hillary did not think so. Biden does not think so. Colin Powell, clear as day, and somewhat scary he did this, endorsed Obama as transformational. That is just another word for training on the job. Elect John McCain. No training needed.

    • Posted By: neos @ 10/20/2008 6:40:48 PM

And if the zealots outnumber the republican deadenders and gain an electoral majority, then McGrumpy and the Airhead lose. See how that works?

Palin talks about 'pro-American' parts of the country and 'real

Americans.' McCain talks about the 'real Virginia.' These code words show

us the true colors of their campaign. The Palin/McCain ticket's ugly philosophy of exclusion and division can and should be compared to the Obama/Biden ticket of inclusion and union. The Obama campaign shows us what an Obama presidency will look like, where Americans will be encouraged to put aside the tired old hateful wedge issues and to unify once again for the common good. A president should pull us together and not tear us apart. Have we learned nothing from the Cheney/Rove/Bush years?

Michele Bachmann Channels McCarthy: Obama "Very Anti-American," Congressional Witch Hunt Needed

In a television appearance that outraged Democrats are already describing as Joseph McCarthy politics, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann claimed on Friday that Barack Obama and his wife Michelle held anti-American views and couldn't be trusted in the White House. She even called for the major newspapers of the country to investigate other members of Congress to "find out if they are pro-America or anti-America."

McCain Employing GOP Operative Accused Of Voter Registration Fraud

    H Y P O C R I T E S!

John McCain's campaign has directed $175,000 to the firm of a Republican operative accused of massive voter registration fraud in several states.

According to campaign finance records, a joint committee of the McCain-Palin campaign, the RNC and the the California Republican Party, made a $175,000 payment to the group Lincoln Strategy in June for purposes of "registering voters." The managing partner of that firm is Nathan Sproul, a renowned GOP operative who has been investigated on multiple occasions for suppressing Democratic voter turnout, throwing away registration forms and even spearheading efforts to get Ralph Nader on ballots to hinder the Democratic ticket.

CBS' Schieffer: Powell "Saying Aloud What A Lot Of Republicans...Saying Privately"

In the wake of Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama, conservative critics offered some pushback on the General's decision, with several, most notably Rush Limbaugh, suggesting that the decision was based purely on race. But this morning, CBS' Bob Schieffer made it clear that behind the scenes, Powell's words echoed the criticism of many Republicans, saying, "What Colin Powell said yesterday and why it was so riveting to hear him, he was saying aloud what a lot of Republicans are saying privately."

This is one of the most thoughtful "WHAT IF" scenarios I have read. It was on a comment opportunity after people voted on who won the debate in a Colorado Springs newspaper.

Obama/Biden vs McCain/Palin, what if things were switched around...think about it. Would the country's collective point of view be different? (10/8/08)

    Ponder the following:

What if the Obama???s had paraded five children across the stage, including a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?
What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once and Obama was a divorcee?
What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married?
What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five? (The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?
What if Obama couldn't read from a TelePrompTer?
What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing four planes?

What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution?
What if the Obama???s had adopted a white child?

You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?
This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

    Educational Background:

    Barack Obama:
Columbia University - B.A. Political Science with a Specialization in International Relations.

Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna *** Laude
    Joseph Biden:

Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)

    Versus

    John McCain:

    Sarah Palin:

North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study

Great post, but I think you already know the answer to your questions. Obama and his wife would have been portrayed and morally bankrupt and he would have been portrayed as stupid if he had finished that low. By the way if Obama had under threat of torture made propoganda movies for the Vet Cong, he would have been branded a traitor and would not even be in the running.
