After 9/11, the US government started rounding up Muslims without cause and without due process of law, like we did to the Japanese Americans in WWII. The Bush administration called it's main internment camp Guantanamo Bay. While there are certainly many guilty terrorists held in Guantanamo, there are also many innocent American citizens who have been held illegally for years without even being charged with any crime. They have been tortured by our government. Some of them have died.

Recently the Supreme Court ruled against the Bush administration in the matter of Guantanamo Bay. The Supreme Court Justices were NOT on the side of the terrorists. They were on the side of the Geneva Convention, that says you can not torture POWs, and on the side of US laws that state you can not imprison a person without charging them with a crime and bringing them to trial. I'm sure that like most Americans, the Justices who voted against the illegal, immoral doings at Guantanamo didn't feel sympathy for the terrorists. They felt sympathy for the laws of AMERICA, the land of the FREE, where even rat finks get a fair trial.

Meanwhile, back in Iraq, the Bush administration is busy trying to build a smokescreen to hide the CRIMES they have committed. Those pesky weapons of mass destruction. Just think, the National Debt went up over 6 trillion dollars under Bush. More than 2 TRILLION of it went directly into the pockets of Halliburton, a corporation owned by the Cheney family. Halliburton is now a DUBAI corporation and therefore is not subject to US taxes. All that money they took out of the US Treasury is going into the coffers of a MUSLIM country.

Did you hear about how the US government is being charged millions for Halliburton deliveries of sand into Iraq from Kuwait? Sand. Like there is a shortage of sand in Iraq? Another contractor shipped sand from Idaho to Iraq at our expense. Nobel prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz discusses these and other excesses of our current government's out of control spending in Iraq.

Your grandchildren will be working like slaves to pay off this debt, so that the Bushes and Cheneys can live the high life in Dubai.

Yeah, they're patriots, Bush&Co. They wear flag pins. And hide the money they stole from America in Dubai.

And they want me to believe that Obama is a socialist. Right.

There is an old saying: Don't try finding five legs on a cat. Wright had nothing to do with the banking and forecloseure melt down. I really don't give a crap about the people outside government that don't have a bearing on the directions our nation is taking. 2/3ths of the American people hold the Republicans accountable for our economic melt down.

I am a naturilized americacan citizen and am proud to be one. I am voting for McCain for the following reasons: His service for this country and POW for 5 years plus makes me appreciate him more than anyone else, he is already a satisfied multimilionaire and I don't think he will screw us up financially nor he will allow radical enemies to push us around and finally Obama has actually a very scarce resume'

Bush's family is also wealthy, so his plans favor the wealthy as will McCain's. McCain wants to downplay his wealth, much the way Republicans downplay their intelligence, to appeal to Americans, but he is NOT effected in the least by these conditions personally. As for earmarks.

McCain???s claim is false. In 2006, the senator teamed up with fellow Arizona senator Jon Kyl (R) to funnel $10 million toward the University of Arizona for an academic center named after the late Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist. Even Arizona lawmaker, Rep. Jeff Flake (R), said he was planning to ???lean against the measure.??? The National Taxpayers Union, another traditional McCain ally, questioned why the senator was making federal taxpayers foot the bill for the center.

In 2003, McCain also slipped $14.3 million into a defense appropriations bill to
create a buffer zone around Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

This is something very well documented and McCain has funneled many millions this way and HE IS NOT BEING CANDID ABOUT THIS.

Read also about his pals and Palin s pals..........

Well you should ask McCain how palling Gordon Liddy, Pastor Hagee, Keating five, Mustafa Abu Naba'a, Ali Jawad, Oliver North, John Singlaub and U.S. Council for World Freedom, Kemper Marley, Don Diamond, Marylin Shannon have shaped his views.

What about his association with segregationist senators and ex- KKK like Byrd, has that make him a segregationist as well? Good question to ask, maybe you should just assume like you are doing with Obama, why not?

And what about Sarah and Todd Palin membership with Alaska Independence Party ??? the party of anti-American Joe Vogler What is Todd s influence as husband and shadow governor getting involved in her job and policies. And Sarah s friend Mark Chryson and Steve Stoll members of the AIP as well. Let s assume as well that they have influence her being friends for so many years, no?

      And this...........

I am a Vietnam era vet and McCain is a disgrace to the military. McCain crashed 5 jets, and while on deck to take off next, employed a hot dog routine called wet-starting on the USS Forrestal, igniting a missle on the jet behind him and killing 132 fellow servicemen. His Admiral father quickly covered it up and no charges were brought. McCain was not the most skilled of pilots and was shot down in Hanoi and quickly mentioned he was the son of the great Admiral and received preferential treatment thereafter. McCain has not once mentioned the 3-4 million Iraq refugees in Iran, Syria, Lebanon, or Jordan, or the Iraq casualties. McCain suffers from arrogance disease. Look up arrogance disease and Forrestal and then tell me I am wrong...

As a POW, Let look at McCain who you feel is NOT bitter....then tell me he is not going to screw us up more financially in the war with Iraq.

Indeed, what is most striking about McCain's attitude toward Vietnam is his insistence that we could have won -- that we should have won -- with more bombs and more casualties. In 1998, he spoke on the 30th anniversary of the Tet Offensive. "Like a lot of Vietnam veterans, I believed and still believe that the war was winnable," he said. "I do not believe that it was winnable at an acceptable cost in the short or probably even the long term using the strategy of attrition which we employed there to such tragic results. I do believe that had we taken the war to the North and made full, consistent use of air power in the North, we ultimately would have prevailed." Five years later, he said much the same thing to the Council on Foreign Relations. "We lost in Vietnam because we lost the will to fight, because we did not understand the nature of the war we were fighting, and because we limited the tools at our disposal."

Very few military historians agree with McCain's bitter analysis, which suggests that a ground invasion and an even more destructive bombing campaign, with an unimaginable cost in human life, would have achieved an American victory. But perhaps because he is obsessed by the humiliation of defeat -- which fell directly on his father, Adm. John S. McCain Jr., who served as the commander in chief of Pacific forces during the Vietnam conflict -- the former prisoner of war seemingly can formulate neither a rational assessment of that war's enormous costs nor of its flawed premises and purposes

To reach such an assessment requires, at the very least, a review of the relevant statistics, although such data can scarcely convey the war's horror. Numbers are useful, however, because they provide perspective on the assertions of politicians like McCain, whose rhetoric of "victory" is otherwise meaningless. http://www.salon.com/opinion/conason/2008/07/04/mcain_vietnam/

HOLA MAX IN FL- WE DID NOT WIN THE VIET NAM WAR BECAUSE WE COULD NOT INVADE THE NORTH. THE U.S. WAS AFRAID OF CONFLICT WITH CHINA. I KNOW, I WAS THERE IN 1967 WITH KILO COMPANY 3RD MARINE BAT. 3RD MARINE DIVSION.

I WAS IN SEVERAL FIRE FIGHTS FACE TO FACE AGAINST THE NORTH VIETNAMESE SOLDIERS. THEY WER WELL TRAIN AND COURAGEOUS SOLDIER WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT AS HARD AS IT TOOK TO DEFEND THEIR COUNTRY. IT WOULD HAVE COST MORE THAN WHAT THAT IDIOT McCAIN THINKS.

BESIDES, COMMUNISM IS NOT THE THREAT, THE THREAT IS US. THE RICH TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE MIDDLE CLASS AND THE POOR. IF ANYTHING IS GOING TO DESTROY US IS THE GREED OF THE RICH TO GET RICHER.

WHEN WE ALLOW OUR INDUSTRY TO GO ABROAD, WE LOSE ECONOMIC POWER. AND WHEN WE LOSE ECONOMIC POWER OTHER COUNTRIES GAIN IT. THIS CAUSES A LOSS IN OUR CAPABILITY TO DEFEND OURSELVES LTTLE BY LITTLE.

THIS IS WHAT McCAIN DOES NOT UNDERSTAND: HE IS AN IDIOT!
        GO OBAMA! GO BIDEN!

I definitely think John McCain needes incessantly the Reverand Wright's Damming of America to bring home the candidate who hates America. The coments by Michelle need to come out again when she said she hadn't been proud of America until Obama was winning Caucuses and Primaries. It is also a shame that Obama through ACORN is fraudulantly stealing this election even as the republican try to surpress non-verifiable voters. Obama is vastly outspending McCain. Obama is liberal and I think people will realize this. Iif the negatives are brought out enough people will realize that this is a fellow who hates America and McCain will win. Informational campaigning such as with the Swift Boats with Kerry points out character. Even knowing what we know aboutObama I'm not hot on voting for McCain. I lean a little to Obama because of the economy, but think I would vote for McCain if reminded enough about Obma's negatives. I think McCain doesn't understand economics a wit and he every new week comes up with a plan for rescuing the economy which doesn't seem fair or evenworkable and then ther is Sarah. Do I believe she is qualified to be President? No. Anyhow, both campaigns are campaigning negatively and should continue. McCain just doesn't understand that this isn't the Senate--the gloves need to com eoff. I couldn't believe it when he stood up for Obama as a decent man, How could it be okay that we elect someone who hates America so much as evidenced by his associations.

CONSERVATIVE DEM: IN MY OPINION-McCAIN HAS SOLD OUT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BY ALLOWING HIMSELF TO BECOME OVERTAKEN BY THE GREED FOR POWER. HE WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT AT ALL COST, AND THAT INCLUDES ALLOWING SARA PALIN TO BE HIS RUNNING MATE. HE KNEW THAT SHE WAS NOT QUALIFIED. HE KNEW THAT HE DID NOT VETT HER CORRECTLY.

HE ALSO KNOW THAT THE PROREPUBLICAN MEDIA WOULD INFLATE HER IMAGE AND WIN THE SUPPORT OF MANY REPUBLICANS WHO WERE NOT WITH HIM AT THE BEGINING. AND HE ALSO KNEW THAT SHE IS A HIGH DEADLY RISK IF SHE WERE TO BECOME PRESIDENT IF HE WERE TO DIE IN OFFICE OR BECOME INCOMPETENT.

WOULD McCAIN GIVE A DAM AT THAT TIME? HELL NO! HE COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE U.S. AS LONG AS HE GETS WHAT HE WANTS. HIS MOTTO: COUNTRY FIRST HAS GONE OUT THE WINDOW. HIS PATRIOTISM HAS BECOME A FAKE ONE.

McCAIN CLAIMS THAT HE IS FOR JOE THE PLUMBER, BUT IN REALITY, HE IS FOR McCAIN. WHY? THINK: IF HE WINS, THE CORPORATIONS WILL GAIN CONTROL OF THE ECONOMY AND JOE THE PLUMBER WILL BE NO LONGER EXIST SINCE HIS BUSINESS WILL BE DESTROYED BY THE COMPETITION AGAINST THE BIG CORPORATION. THEY WILL CONTROL THE PRICES AND THE MINIMUM WAGE AND THE ECONOMY.

McCAIN AND PALIN ARE BOTH PRORICH AND WILL NEVER CHANGE. THEY WILL CONTINUE FOUR MORE YEARS OF THE SAME THAT BUSH HAS GIVE US: NOTHING! GO OBAMA!

On page 373 of John McCain's 2002 memoir Worth the Fighting For, you'll find the following quote:
"I didn't decide to run for President to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be President because it had become my ambition to be President. I was sixty-two years old when I made the decision and I thought it was my one shot at the prize."

First....Sarah Palin can take on any current Senator and Congressman and put them to shame. She's a woman who knows how to survive in the wild , she hunts and she knows guns. Anyone who thinks a person with these character traits cannot perform as Commander-In-Chief is sadly mistaken...these guys don't know what they're talking about and they are just being sexist as usual. After John McCain , Sarah Palin is the best person for the job to ensure America's security and I challenge anyone to dispute that.

Second, whats Florida residents thinking ? Obama abandoned Florida and Michigan during the Democratic primaries...he made sure their votes won't be counted because if they did...Hillary Clinton would be the one running for President right now. I guess people in Florida and Michigan have pretty short memories and they don't mind being screwed over by Obama is the only way I can explain it. I'm starting to believe more and more everyday that Americans are...and I hate to say it....pretty stupid and gullible. Good luck !!

Please please please - I don't pretend to understand Canadian politics enough to purport myself an expert so please stop pretending you understand American politics. I view Canada as a good neighbor and it saddens me to have my neighbor try to impact this election without an even rudimentary understanding of it. First of all - go back and review the circumstances of the Florida and Michigan primaries. Those states made the decision to hold primaries that they knew would be invalid. Why should presidential candidates throw limited resources (campaign funds) into a hole like that?
Second, being able to fire a gun does not qualify one to be in charge of national security!!! By your account, anyone who can get fired up about shooting a loaded weapon (justified or not) is qualified to make major decisions, including those about nuclear warfare. There is absolutely no logic to this. News from around the world demonstrates just how many crazies are out there (hell, just recently a teenager in Canada was arrested for his role in a plot to gruesomely murder the Prime Minister). I appreciate your interest in US politics - since multiple countries share this continent it makes sense that everyone wants a say - but at least learn something about the US government before you decide to preach!!!

    • Posted By: Honor in Honesty @ 10/18/2008 9:24:24 PM

Concerned Canadian: You really need to stick with Canadian politics because you certainly don't understand politics in the US. First of all, Florida and Michigan's Democratic party leaders agreed to the rules that would govern the Democratic primaries (including any penalties that may be incurred if the rules were not followed). Obama did not impose the penalty of not counting the votes for either state. The DNC (Democratic National Committee) enforced the penalty on the books for not complying with the primary rules. Once the Obama campaign was assurred that the primary votes of both states would not be counted, they elected to focus on states where votes would be counted in the primaries. Had they not been misinformed that Florida or Michigan's votes would not be counted, they would never have pulled out of either state. Why would they not have expected the DNC to abide by the rules voted and agreed upon by the Democratic leaders of all states (including Florida and Michigan). If you have rules in place, those rules should be followed. If not, what's the point in having them in the first place? You can't just make things up as you go along just because the results don't suit you AFTER the fact. That would not have been fair to the Obama supporters either. As I said earlier, get your facts straight. I was a Hilary supporter, but right is right. That's why we have rules and regulations.

Socialism will destroy education in America. I have 3 children, ages 19-26. My youngest believes that it's my responsiblity to support him. He went to college for one semester (taking 3 courses), which I paid for. He lived at home and didn't pay anything toward the bills of the household. I required that he work at night (delivering pizzas) to earn some spending money. Being 19, he should be responsible for some things. He found a job, but quit and then thought it was my responsibility to give him spending money.
I finally had enough and had to make one of the hardest choices in my life - to kick him out of the house. Tough love works. He ws fortunate to move in with my daughter (the middle child), get a full-time job and start paying bills. I have always told him that once he gets his life straightened out, I would pay for his college. However, he would have to go to night school and maintain his job.

Now that Senator Obama has told America that his plan is to "spread the wealth", this is what my son would have loved. He would have never got a job and become a productive member of society. He would have one the minimum possible, knowing that the government would always be there for him. This also will lead to the total destuction of our education system (why go to school, when you can drop out and get all the benefits from "welshare". They would be equal in society regardless of education achievement.)

Sorry for the ranting. To bring this all back to the article, Senator Obama has listened to Rev. Wright for years. These are the same preachings he has listened to for years. Rev. Wright preaches Black Libertarian Theology that encompasses socialism. He said that the only way black people can be equal is to steal the rich's trust funds and develop a system where the wealth is spread. Senator Obama's response to Joe the Plumber, not only has he listened to Rev. Wright, but also agrees with him.

    • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 10/18/2008 5:02:54 PM

I have never seen the context of that Obama "spread the wealth" quote.Have you? I know there is an element of that in Obama's tax plan because it restores the Reagan tax scale to high income earners. However, people earning over a quarter of a million a year received a disproportionate share of the tax breaks enacted under Bush. In other words, Bush took money from teachers, waitresses, security guards, even plumbers to "share" it with high earning executives. I don't think that's fair. Do you?

If Obama was talking about everyone paying his or her fair share of taxes based on a progressive tax code, that is the kind of redistribution of wealth I can get behind.

I assume you know that the tax break you get on your mortgage is a form of wealth redistribution, don't you? The money to pay for that tax break comes, in part, from people who cannot afford to buy a home. You benefit because people earning less cannot get the same break. Likewise, the tax break your employer receives for paying for your health care benefits is another way that wealth is shared. The economic term for these types of programs is "fiscal welfare" and it refers to programs that give benefits through the tax code. They tend to benfit the middle class and were enacted to promote national goals such as home ownership or private control of the health care system. I'd bet you support these forms of wealth distribution.

One other issue, Obama has spoken out quite forcefully about parental responsibility in teaching children values and responsibility. You can't blame everything on society.

Mimi, stop spinning. The tax break on mortgages isn't a form of wealth distribution. It is available to anyone who buys a home, rich, poor, or in between.

But it's only available to those who can afford to buy a home. Like it or not, that means that it's NOT available to everyone. Your argument is completely unfounded. Tax breaks based on your mortgage payments ARE fiscal breaks that are not available to everyone. Further, tax breaks based on mortgage payments are not available in many countries, for one reason and one reason only - if you can't swing the payments yourself, you shouldn't be trying to buy a house, a car, a boat, a second home, or assume any other type of non-consumer debt. Haven't you learned anything from the last couple of months?

Um, I think this reflects your own family issues, not the political scene. Try to focus.

Obama's view of the future of America - Socialism which is the next step to Communism!! He admitted to Joe the Plumber than he wanted to spread the wealth! He said that he wanted to make everyone equal! Is America ready for Socialism? The Iranian president, Ahmadinejad, said today that he is glad to see the end to capitalism in America!! Are you glad?????
    ====================================================================================================

Under socialism a ruling class of intellectuals, bureaucrats and social planners decide what people want or what is good for society and then use the coercive power of the State to regulate, tax, and redistribute the wealth of those who work for a living. In other words, socialism is a form of legalized theft.

The morality of socialism can be summed-up in two words: envy and self-sacrifice. Envy is the desire to not only possess another's wealth but also the desire to see another's wealth lowered to the level of one's own. Socialism's teaching on self-sacrifice was nicely summarized by two of its greatest defenders, Hermann Goering and Bennito Mussolini. The highest principle of Nazism (National Socialism), said Goering, is: "Common good comes before private good." Fascism, said
Mussolini, is "a life in which the individual, through the sacrifice of his own private interests??realizes that completely spiritual existence in which his value as a man lies."

Socialism is the social system which institutionalizes envy and self-sacrifice: It is the social system which uses compulsion and the organized violence of the State to expropriate wealth from the producer class for its redistribution to the parasitical class.

Despite the intellectuals' psychotic hatred of capitalism, it is the only moral and just social system.

Capitalism is the only moral system because it requires human beings to deal with one another as traders--that is, as free moral agents trading and selling goods and services on the basis of mutual consent.

Capitalism is the only just system because the sole criterion that determines the value of thing exchanged is the free, voluntary, universal judgement of the consumer. Coercion and fraud are anathema to the free-market system.

It is both moral and just because the degree to which man rises or falls in society is determined by the degree to which he uses his mind. Capitalism is the only social system that rewards merit, ability and achievement, regardless of one's birth or station in life.

Yes, there are winners and losers in capitalism. The winners are those who are honest, industrious, thoughtful, prudent, frugal, responsible, disciplined, and efficient. The losers are those who are shiftless, lazy, imprudent, extravagant, negligent, impractical, and inefficient. Spread the wealth is another way of saying it's time to give everyone a real chance. That doesn't mean that everyone will end up equal, as it is up to each person to do with that real chance what they will. But without that chance, where can anyone go?

What in the world is wrong with everyone getting the chance to better their lot in life? Are you so lacking in compassion and in common sense as to not see that alloweing everyone the chance to better themselves, and by extension, their families and their communities is a good thing, not just for them but for the whole of the planet?

What makes you think that Palin could not handle that 3AM phone call? Is it because she is not a Washington insider, or because she has a Midwestern accent? Maybe it is because she is an attractive female. Do you think she can't handle being a mother and being Vice President or President? Ask the millions of mothers in our country who are multitaskers! Is it her limited public service experience time being a governor, comparable to Obama's limited time as a senator?

Palin couldn't handle that 3am phone call because she wouldn't even know if the country in question is real - the owman has absolutley no understanding of international affairs and my bet is that she wouldn't recognize the names of the majority of countries in the world.

These types of attacks paint McCain (rightly so) as a desperate, scared and sore loser who will sell his soul to win. This campaign is being watched by the ENTIRE world. America's reputation is already damaged in the eyes of the rest of the world that we have to work with in order to survive as a country. Having a vicious, dirty-tricks, crybaby for a president surely wouldn't help AT ALL. This country will be doomed with McShame and Palin at the helm. We'll be even BIGGER jokes to the rest of the world than we already are. I just wish that the media would get the nerve to tell the American people about McCain's "relationships" with terrorists like G. Gordon Liddy and hatemongers like Rev. Hagee. I'm sure McCain agrees that we Americans "have a right to know the extent of these associations."

Why are there so many articles where media keep bringing up "Why aren't the talking about Jeremiah Wright" Well where are the many articles likewise covering John McCain's VERY CLOSE RELATIONSHIP with G. Gordon Liddy? It seems like the media IS against Obama in this regard. THEY are the ones who keep bringing it up, asking the question. I call upon you to be fair. At least start printing article asking "Many wonder why Obama is not bringing up the Liddy card?" After all, many are asking.

I heard McCain follows the Rev. Sun Yung Moon.
