I have read and read these comments and post and replies. It hurts because first and foremost we are Americans. Yes, for some of you Obama is an American too. Let's set this straight, this is not about REpublicans or Democrats; it's not about race or gender it is about who can get this country back on the right track. One candidate should not be belittled or lied about to promte your candidate. If one stands out above the other because his plan is better than so be it. It does not speak well of us to have this election look like this to be like this to set us on a course for destruction by the tool of divisiveness. The war is the single most drain on our economy, it produces nothing for us. We can't even say what victory is so how can we win?

Our economy is bad because we don't produce, production has been sent overseas. Our health care is bad and we rate about 15 of all advanced countries. We can't and won't be number one if we don't start fixing these things. If we begin to produce things people go back to work and our economy gets stronger but there is going to be a need for a tax base and that's just the cold hard truth of the matter. Neither candidate said that but it is the truth we are running a deficit which means as long as we're in Iraq we will need to raise money and that means taxes. Just that simple.

I like and agree with what you say. We can all agree to disagree, but let's keep the hatred out of the picture.

Why is the leftist socialist slamming a fellow American like Joe for asking an honest question millions of us wanted to know, 'how will I be affected by your agenda if your elected/". Well they are pissed because some average 'Joe' received for once an unrehearsed, non-vague response and it was reported world wide.
'Yo.re hope of making a better life for yourself, will be taxed more heavily under my leadership, and perhaps your hopes and dreams will be completely dashed, so that I can redistribute your hard earned cash to further my socialist agenda" Hey left wing nuts, you are supporting this Marxist, if elected everyone was going to find out anyway, live with it!

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 10/18/2008 8:34:23 PM

Hmmm, Joe was really just too convenient for McCain for one thing. He was in Arizona of all places before he migrated to Ohio. He's a relative of Charles Keating (you know, McCain's bud from bygone days), and somehow McCain just happens to pick up on a minor campaign outing that was probably only televised in the local market. Add to that the fact that he made 40K last year and simply couldn't afford to buy out his boss. What's chances of all these things happening in one guy's question if it was not a plant? Now right wing fruitloop, what Obama was referring to as spreading the wealth around is simplely the progressive nature of our income tax. The extreme right wing, which is basically all of it since Reagan, has whined about the progressive structure of income tax for the last 20 years, wanting to substitute some kind of flat tax (regressive taxation) for the bracketed system we currently have. Now one of the effects of progressive taxation is that it does indeed redistribute wealth, McCain full well knows that, yet he went out of his way to conjure up in the dim right wing nut mind the vision of an immediate confiscation of wealth in some way he left undefined by an Obama administration. We've had a progressive system of taxation with income tax since 1916, I don't think it has turned us into a Soviet Union look alike. There are some excellent arguments for progressive taxation, that are too involved to take up in a forum like this, I suggest you train on them before you go running your head about things you really, really do not have a clue about. I have read Marx, good read in the right translations BTW, and if someone claims Obama is a Marxist, then he is a liar, pure and simple.

      • Posted By: kimmee111 @ 10/20/2008 3:52:26 PM

Oh yes, Joe was a "plant"! He convinces the Obama compaign to walk through his neighborhood. He convinces Obama to stop and talk to him, and best of all he convinced Obama to say the"spread the wealth around." Comment. Very plausible. Democrats are doing damage controll in a very negative way. And we thought McCane was doing all the smearing. If the GOP has such power would McCane not be leading by at least 90% by now. Get real and quit getting stupid.

        • Posted By: NJ-BJ @ 10/20/2008 7:37:08 PM

No, Kimmee111. I guess he was not a "plant". He told a lie, it appears. He does not earn enough to buy the company. The company is not worth $250,000. He may not have been a plant, but he was manipulative. I also think he got more than he bargained for, since his own party has outed him, the media (and everyone else) is digging into his business, etc.

          • Posted By: Heartlover @ 10/21/2008 4:23:34 PM

Exactly what was the lie he told? He never said he was going to buy the company he worked for, he said he'd like to be able to someday. He is a plumber. Apparently, in the state of Ohio, you can work as a plumber under your employer's master plumber license. So, what is it he lied about????

    • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 10/18/2008 7:57:35 PM

A better question would be, why did the SAME people who are defending Joe Plumber (who is nether a licensed plumber nor named Joe) were the ones who spat on John Kerry and Max Cleland's sacrifice in Vietnam? Here's a quote from Bill Maher in the Larry King show, who phrased it better than anyone.

MAHER: I think it's great that McCain has chosen this guy to be the exemplar of middle America, because, to me, "Joe the Plumber" proves exactly what I've been saying -- and many people have been saying for so long about the Republican Party in the modern era -- they take advantage. They prey on people like "Joe the Plumber," who don't really understand the issues. He finally admitted, I think, today that, yes, Obama's plan -- tax plan would actually benefit him more.

But you see "Joe the Plumber," who, by the way, isn't really a plumber...

      KING: He's not a plumber?

MAHER: He's kind of Joe the liar. Well, he doesn't have a plumbing license. You know...

KING: So how does he plumb?

MAHER: Exactly. And he's -- see, he's like so many -- this is what the Republicans do. They prey on people who have a dream -- and we're all for dreams. I'm not against dreams. The American dream, terrific. But sometimes it's just a fantasy.

And Joe thinks, apparently, he's going to take over his boss' business and make more than $250,000 a year. So really what we're talking about is someone who would benefit from the plan that Obama has on the table, but doesn't want to vote for Obama, for whatever reason. He might think he may be an Arab or a communist or, you know, maybe he's black. "Joe the Plumber" did compare him to Sammy Davis, Jr. tap dancing today.

      KING: He did?

MAHER: Yes. He said he tap danced on the answer to taxes like Sammy Davis, Jr. -- you're kind of tipping your Mitt there, "Joe the Plumber". But, you know, Obama is for people who live in reality, who actually need money and a tax break now. He's living in the Republican fantasy world, where he's going to become rich and he's going to have over $250,000 and then he might have to pay some more taxes, Larry. And we can't have that in America, because we only two have two wars going, the economy is melting, we're $11 trillion in debt.

You know, at some point, somebody is going to have to pay the taxes. Neither one of the candidates was very forthcoming about that last night.

I find it interesting that Governor Sarah Palin is suggesting that Senator Barack Obama is "experimenting with socialism." As I understand it as the Governor of the State of Alaska, Sarah Palin has redistributed oil money to the citizens of the State of Alaska. This is a classic example of socialism. I think Governor Sarah Palin has gone beyond the experimenting stage and has gone full steam into socialism. Another example of corporate socialism is the $700B bailout of Wall Street and the nationalization of many banks, but Governor Palin doesn't agree that this is socialism.

Boy, I am sure glad someone besides me caught that. Talk about "Sharing the Wealth" if that's not sharing the wealth I don't know what is.

      • Posted By: Heartlover @ 10/21/2008 4:01:00 PM

Sarah Palin did not start the redistributed oil money. That has gone on for many years. It is based on oil company revenues and is a "reward" to the citizens of Alaska for living in such an expensive state. Get it right before posting!

Wow! Loriw has his/her hand in every pot on the Newsweek blogs! Apparently he/she is an expert on everything, not just autism. Too bad, Loriw, don't also have a good handle on the facts nor do you have the ability to listen to the arguments of others. Your diatribes for McCain/Palin only make you look as angry as John and as clueless as Sarah. It's okay, though. Eventually the distortions and untruths promoted on both sides will be exposed, but one ticket will have prevailed. I doubt that it will be the one you so desperately want, however.

Before you buy in to McCain saying he is different than Bush, just remember:

ACTIONS SPEAK THOUSANDS OF TIMES LOUDER THAN WORDS

McCain, down in the polls with less than two weeks left is saying he is different than Bush. Except for the last eight years he has been with Bush almost all of the time.

Now, in the final two weeks, he wants you to believe he is someone else. People just do NOT change that fast.

HIS WORDS ARE JUST THAT, WORDS TO DUPE YOU AND PANDER FOR YOUR VOTE.

if he gets elected, when this election is through:

MCCAIN WILL BE THROUGH WITH YOU.

He will be back to the McCain he was for the last eight years:

    - More for the oil companies
    - More for the top 5% of business
    - More for the already wealthy
    - More for the trickle down
    - More partisanship in Washington
    - More warrantless spying on Americans
    - More Isolation of the U.S. in the world
    - More Taxpayer money to Iraq
    - More oil dependency
    - Less for renewable energy ..
    - Less diplomacy and More war
    - ..
    - And, LESS FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS AND BELOW
    .

YES, ACTIONS DO SPEAK THOUSANDS OF TIMES LOUDER THAN WORDS

And for the last eight years, McCain has spoken very loudly.

I want all of you to read this. Hopefully McCain and Palin will eventually see that it doesn't matter what religion you are, what makes you is your beliefs and actions. They could learn something.

Powell also referred to a photo essay from a magazine featuring a photo of a mother resting her head on the tombstone of her son at Arlington National Cemetery. The tombstone lists the soldier's awards, including a Purple Heart, that were earned in Iraq. The solider was Kareem Khan, a 20-year-old Muslim from New Jersey.

The soldier's father, Feroze Khan, said he wants to personally thank Powell for his statement.

"All my son wanted to do was serve his country," he told CNN. "Since he was a boy, he wanted to be in the Army. That was his dream. That's the only thing he ever wanted."

"It was not about how he was Muslim, it was about who he was and what he stood for," Feroze Khan said. "He told me, 'I am going to fight for my faith, not against it.'"

Feroze Khan doesn't want to talk about politics. What the candidates say about his religion is of little importance to him. His son defined what he believes in.

After 9/11, the US government started rounding up Muslims without cause and without due process of law, like we did to the Japanese Americans in WWII. The Bush administration called it's main internment camp Guantanamo Bay. While there are certainly many guilty terrorists held in Guantanamo, there are also many innocent American citizens who have been held illegally for years without even being charged with any crime. They have been tortured by our government. Some of them have died.

Recently the Supreme Court ruled against the Bush administration in the matter of Guantanamo Bay. The Supreme Court Justices were NOT on the side of the terrorists. They were on the side of the Geneva Convention, that says you can not torture POWs, and on the side of US laws that state you can not imprison a person without charging them with a crime and bringing them to trial. I'm sure that like most Americans, the Justices who voted against the illegal, immoral doings at Guantanamo didn't feel sympathy for the terrorists. They felt sympathy for the laws of AMERICA, the land of the FREE, where even rat finks get a fair trial.

Meanwhile, back in Iraq, the Bush administration is busy trying to build a smokescreen to hide the CRIMES they have committed. Those pesky weapons of mass destruction. Just think, the National Debt went up over 6 trillion dollars under Bush. More than 2 TRILLION of it went directly into the pockets of Halliburton, a corporation owned by the Cheney family. Halliburton is now a DUBAI corporation and therefore is not subject to US taxes. All that money they took out of the US Treasury is going into the coffers of a MUSLIM country.

Did you hear about how the US government is being charged millions for Halliburton deliveries of sand into Iraq from Kuwait? Sand. Like there is a shortage of sand in Iraq? Another contractor shipped sand from Idaho to Iraq at our expense. Nobel prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz discusses these and other excesses of our current government's out of control spending in Iraq.

Your grandchildren will be working like slaves to pay off this debt, so that the Bushes and Cheneys can live the high life in Dubai.

Yeah, they're patriots, Bush&Co. They wear flag pins. And hide the money they stole from America in Dubai.

And they want me to believe that Obama is a socialist. Right.

In case you think McCain is any different than Bush, watch this:

Oh Drat, The McCain camp didnt have anyone sinister enough to spin what McCain really stands for, more Bush economics. Bummer, guess theyll have to vote on the facts down there. And THATs not good for McCain at all.

  • Posted By: FL McCains @ 10/21/2008 10:21:12 AM

The folks leading the campaign in FL are not experienced in managing people or leadership. They lucked out by association and they are not right for their positions. Campaigns are about people and the two at the helm, Ballard and DIBenigno would be better suited for other tasks. McCain should replace them and do it fast. That message alone is bound to invigorate and re-enthuse those who have supported McCain but grown so frustrated by the tyranny of the two. - FL McCains

  • Posted By: FL McCains @ 10/21/2008 10:18:48 AM

Unfortunately so much of this could have been prevented. Time and time again folks have commented as politely as possible, there needs to be true, mature, experience at the helm in Florida. It is not there. Campaigns need leaders, not kingdoms. Campaigns need people, and coordination and respect. The team assembled cannot lead, and prefers intimidation rather than management. Ballard and DiBenigno may be loyal, but they are not experienced in managing or leading.

After taking the time to read all of the comments posted the past few days, I urge everyone to take the time to read the very first one posted by Nins on 10/18/08 at 12:53:56. It is not often that I agree with a conservative but I certainly do with her posting. I used to have respect for John McCain before he became the GOP's best hope for another 4 years in the White House. Looking at him side with George Bush 90% of the time when fundamentally he had previously disagreed with those policies does nothing to retain that respect. Choosing Sarah Palin as a running mate as a means of pandering to the Religous Right removed any respect permanently. I believe she is a disaster in the proportions that Bush/Cheney have been for 8 years. If she had nothing to hide as far as Troopergate was concerned, she would have welcomed the bipartisan investigation to clear her name. That she and John McCain tried to obstruct that investigation does not bode well for their honesty or judgement. Their obstruction smacked of the Bush/Cheney matter involving Valerie Plame and frankly I've had more than enough of that kind of leadership (or lack thereof).
Do I think that Barack Obama has all of the answers? No, I don't think anyone does. But I do have the hope that he will be more middle of the road and thoughtful when making decisions that affect all of the citizens of the United States than the present administration has been. When all is said and done, I ask myself if the country as a whole and myself are better off than we were 8 years ago and the answer is a resounding NO! For that reason, I am willing to put my faith in Barack Obama than I am in John McCain.

Obama people are using voter lists and sending money in their names. Obama collects large donations as cash or to a supporter's name and divides the amount into small donations and using internet sending the small amounts to Obama. This is FRAUD and US election is bought. MONEY corrupts the system. If Obama is an honest person, after he wins he should put a stop to this and both parties should spend equal amount regulated by the commission and within the set limit. Let us have a an idea advantage not money advantage to one candidate. It is a SHAME

A racial campaign? Where when? Can you please tell me where anyone made a comment about race or anything close that works for either member of the ticket. Maybe you're thinking Bill Clinton that came out and said Obama's campaign had used the race card........

  • Posted By: floridacadman @ 10/21/2008 7:59:37 AM

Ref mcdeere72; What you dont seem to get is, working for it has nothing to do with it. Taxes are what youve already worked for, economics 101. 2nd, you cant spend more than you make, try and follow...5 trillion became 10 trillion because Bush wanted to be everyones friend. Now, this may zoom by you, but review it if needed...you need to have more cash inflow to spend on needed programs such as health insurence. Joe the plumber is not your typical plumber, in true Rep fasion, they pick a guy making 250k a year, and try and pass him off as your average American trying to make ends meet. Talk about delerious and completely out of touch, but, Im glad he did it, it illustrates beautifully how out of touch the Reps actually are.

Here we go again. FLORIDA. I think Senator Biden slipped up and left a huge puddle on the campaign trail.
He's said within six months of an OBAMA presidency a horrible crisis will appear on the horizon, and that
Senator Obama as president will have to make big decisions all by himself. He can't call Senator Kerry at
3 AM because he won't get the phone and Nancy P wouldn't hear his phone call even if an alarm clock was
sitting right next to her ear. WHO ARE YOU GONNA CALL --------------JOHN MCCAIN. When I heard Senator
Biden's comment , I almost laughed myself off the sofa.

    • Posted By: muffinb @ 10/20/2008 4:36:11 PM

I thought Biden's reply was great. I am sure there will be a crisis and I also am sure that Obama can handle it. So I don't know where you come up with the statement that Biden made a goof. I don't get that at all.

      • Posted By: mcdeere72 @ 10/21/2008 7:53:31 AM

The goof was that he promised that a major crisis would happen in the first 6 months. Why would you do that? Unless you wanted to invite one? Obama has done great with major crisis recently don't you think? I'll be there if you need me but unless you need me I'll stay here and work my presidential bid instead. (If he represented me I would be ticked.) Since when did a Senator's job not involve taking care of the people of his state? He HAD to be called back to Washington by the President to actually put his bid on hold. If I was an elected official I would definitely put the needs of those that elected me above an ambition I had for a higher position.

I like the idea of spreading the wealth around and middle class Americans should embrace it. The middle class pays for eveything yet, we get nothing.
McCain is trying to dupe us into thinking Senator Obama's plan would take money from us and give it to people who do not pay taxes, NOT TRUE.

Senator Obama's plan is not aimed at people who do not pay taxes.

McCain is trying to convince non-thinking Americans into believing
if you give money and tax breaks to big oil companies, big business, it
will stimulate the economy and trickle down, NOT TRUE.

Giving bailouts and tax breaks to the wealthiest companies do not help create jobs, it creates greed, and an over indulgence by the top executives.
No matter how much money or tax breaks you give some of these companies,
they DO NOT, want to bring jobs back to the United States.
They feel the American worker is spoiled, lazy, and problematic, but will never utter those words.

Oil companies and big business have been given tax breaks for years
and the only money that ever trickle down, fell right into the golden parachutes of the CEO's who bankrupt their companies, the savings and pensions of seniors,
and got our nation into this financial crisis..

Super rich people and mega rich companies have never embraced spreading the wealth around. The middle class do not seen to realize that, Senator Obama is
trying to get the rich to pay more taxes, to give the middle class some relief.
People who do not pay taxes would not benefit.

McCain, who seems to specialize in misleading the American people swooped in brainwashing the regular working person (middle class) into thinking Obama would to take their money and give it to people who do not pay taxes, NOT TRUE.

All of the anti-socialist should have been camped out at the White House or the corporate offices of the CEO's that pushed this country into a bailout, thereby nationalizing some banks.

Media pundits have yet to press John McCain on what and who will receive tax breaks under his plan and how will he pay for it if he will not be raising taxes.
He did mention cutting medicare and something about social security.
But when ask real questions about these issues, McCain is the one who tap dances better than Sammy Davis Jr., by offering up the standard "why raise anyone's tax" which means big business and oil companies will continue getting huge tax breaks,
and the middle class will keep paying for everyone.

    • Posted By: valark @ 10/20/2008 4:33:44 PM

You honestly believe that the middle class is what funds this country and who pays the most taxes?

      • Posted By: susiequebee1 @ 10/20/2008 9:47:58 PM

ABSOLUTELY.........PSS...GOLLY GEE..YA BETCH YA. THE MIDDLE CLASS HAS BEEN CUT DOWN THE LAST 8 YRS UNDER THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION. THE RICH GET RICHER AND THE POOR GET POORER. Oh, McCain, since you don't want to spread the wealth and you have sooo much of it, would you please send me a few thousand that you say "trickles" down to us low life of middle class citzens? How about one of your 8 - 10 homes that you own, could you give me one of those? Oh and my car is quite a few years old so how about one of those cars that sits in a garage in one of your houses your not using/

        • Posted By: mcdeere72 @ 10/21/2008 7:44:30 AM

So, just like Obama said you want the wealth spread around right? No need for you to ACTUALLY WORK for it, no we'll make it a process of government to "spread the wealth" among all. Why should those that work harder be rewarded? LOL Thats what set America apart before is those wanting to get ahead and those that work with them. Not any more, it's more patriotic to pay higher taxes, so what drives people to succeed if all they are going to do is get taxed more and get the wealth spread around?

        • Posted By: mcdeere72 @ 10/21/2008 7:40:33 AM

Kinda like Obama, I mean he must relate to the average middle class with his 1.6 million dollar home. At least McCain is buying homes for relatives and at least we aren't finding "coincidences" with McCain buying houses the same exact day as his neighbor, buys a plot of land at a reduced price to make his lot s larger. Oh yes obama definitely can relate to us that have mortgages at $150,000 - $200,000

  • Posted By: floridacadman @ 10/21/2008 7:37:20 AM

Every few years the Dems have to go in and fix what the war mongers screw up, because their only remedy for an economy problem is to restart the war machine. 5 years after the Reps announced 'mission accomplished' in Iraq, we are still killing our kids and checking spider holes. Meantime, the guy that perpetrated 9/11 is wondering the hills of Afgan. on the back of a camel treking around a dialysis machine, and we cant find him...right. The American people are tired of it, hang it up Rep rights, let us fix this madness and balance the budget once more, and in 8 years youll get a guy in there to botch it all up again and put us into another nightmare.
