Tony Francis - - You are missing the bigger picture. Competition forces efficiency. If we don't embrace intuition and better ideas, regardless of where they originate, we are in a sense paying the "tariff" ourselves... paying too much for inferior products which inhibit our own production.

Your idea, if applied to MLB baseball, would allow many more Americans to be playing in the world series right now. . . in a game that would have a slower pace, fewer head-turning plays and decreased interest from the fans. You can thank foreign competition for the level that we see played in professional sports and the convenience, reliability and AFFORDABILITY we see out of American cars. set a tariff and you will see a decrease in innovation of domestic cars, an increase in price and a smaller selection to satisfy your transportation needs. Study a little harder in your ITT Tech classes and enroll in an econ class or two and leave policy issues to those that have been awarded as the best of the best in the world in their field.

INCREDIBLE All of you seem to still think INSIDE the BOX!!!!!

As you may verify by going to http://theactsofprovidence.biz on july 27th, 2007 I sent Our Pesident George W. Bush the only hard copy of a $60-TRILLION USD Package I published entitled The ACTS of PROVIDENCE ("TAP"). On August 3rd, 2007 Our White House did indeed sign for TAP.

Using "Trickle Up Economics" TAP achieves the $60-TRILLION USD level WITHOUT A SINGLE TAX INCREASE or BUDGET CUT. NOT A PENNY!!!!! Quite the opposite, TAP augements virtually every budget as the Economics of it all Trickle Up from the Local level to the States then the Federal level before going International.

TAP even predicted the Fan/Fred disaster as TAP laid out cler avenues of problem resolution.

Very shortly after I sent TAP to Our President I assured wo can get on-line has access to TAP via FREe download in PDF format by posting TAP on-line at http://theactsofprovidence.biz once again. Don;t worry, the site does NOT have a bunch of buttons sporting sponsors, it does NOT ask for donations, TAP is for ALL hence FREE as TAP should be.

As I posted TAP I also contacted several folks you would think would care including the DNC, some specific Democrat as well as Republican politicians including Sen. Obama's office so am Honored when I hear proposals come out of the Obama camp which include "5-million 'green collar' jobs" and "Belly-up Economics" as the former Labor Secretary was talking of on one show.

$60-TRILLION USD, a Total Fan/Fred Bail-Out, Reversal of Global Warming, Illegal Immigrationn, Medical Research, from Local Schools & Wold Wide Infrastructure rennovations one local at a time to Natural Disaster & Military Readiness, from taking Excellent Care of our Veterans to Billion$ for NASA, it's all in TAP.

I STRONGLY ENCOURGE YOU to check out ACT XI - ADDING IT ALL UP!!!!! Then take it from there. Awe, and PLEASE SPREAD the WORD!!!!!!

all great minds with great advice., kinda generic but really what is needed. hopefully the next president heeds them quickly.

Great minds: Edward C. Prescott & Eric Maskin perhaps! The others are Keynesian intellectual pygmies of the same mental stature as the buffoon Nobel Prize genius Al Gore. Let the next Pres. consult some real economists not these anti-free market Leviathan interventionists.

In canada we have a 3 tier tax system and it seems to be fair for all. If you don't tax at all then where's the money coming from? That's why the recession because nothing's coming in and too much spending. I can't see how people can get upset if the government can hand out cheques to help then what's the big deal on helping with medical and jobs. That's not socialism that's freedom of health and wealth. A parent is the head of the household and doesn't think twice about helping there children so is the president and congress and if they choose to help the people live better that's not socialism. You can call alot of things socialism if the government has a hand. Just get rid of government and run your individual communities if your so afraid. Up in Canada we have the gst tax which brings in a bunch of money and it's done after you bill. That is the way to go if you don't want individual tax taken off your wages. As for Joe the Plumber give me a break. If your able to make more then there's nothing wrong with contributing to your brothers and sisters. He'll be the first one to holler if because he's not taxed and he has to drive on the Federal Hwys to get to a job and they are in bad shape because there's no money to fix them then what?

Thank you, Lioness1, and I especially appreciate your comment, "That's not socialism that's freedom of health and wealth." More people in the USA need to stop being so utterly BRAINWASHED into doing the bidding of the richest percentile of the population - the GOP is dying and needs an infusion of new blood and ideas. The Democrats are not averse to a public/national healthcare system that works! But you'd think that most of the rest of the country was, judging from some of the comments posted here. At least one of the economists contributing to this article is himself in favor of a "welfare state" as that is the model that most efficiently serves the maximum amount of people given the potential constraints on resources, doctors, technology, etc. I'm not sure "constraints" is the right word, exactly, but those would be factors in the mix, for example....

I've lived in several different (European) countries and have always admired their systems - they have public and private tracks for their healthcare systems, and the fact it, everyone is covered and has access, even to the most expensive treatments -- they do not have to file for bankruptcy and forego their house like we do here if we get hit with a catastrophic illness we can't afford to pay for.

Get the insurance companies out of the mix - they're awful. They're destroying our right to healthcare.

I have been trying to compare the health care plans of both candidates. I have seen a few commercials from the American Medical Association (http://www.ama.org) referring to http://www.voicefortheuninsured.org. They have a proposal and you can get into great detail on it that will show hypothetical scenarios and how their plan affects people at different tax levels. I believe their proposal to be relatively fair. Perhaps the doctors have given this some thought...

Lioness1, bless you neighboring sister. Well said and thanks for making the most significant point. Americans used to be about helping their neighbors, but we've lost it to greed and corruption. Those have become the 'values' of many of our political leaders in the recent years. One of the many things I always enjoyed about traveling to Canada was experiencing what we had many years ago in the US. We're split and we need someone who understands the value of collaboration and compromise. It's the only way to solve the complex problems we face in this world.

Hi Geniuses, my name is Tony Francis, a non-deans list college graduate from a 4th tier state college. The only way to fix the 'GLOBAL' economy is for the United States (which is the primary market for the entire world) to place a tax or a 'tariff' on imported goods in order to secure domestic jobs. If people are out of work they are not going to buy domestic or even foreign products placing all markets in jeopardy. The system in place now supports the production and sale of cheaper foreign products that have flooded the global market and wreaked havoc on factories in the United States. One does not need to address the unemployment rate but one does need to draw attention to the number of poorly employed - for example a 40 or 50 year old supporting a family by working for $9 an hour at a Home Depot. If they were working on the floor at GM they would earn a fairer wage.

Free trade is naive, the Japanese buy Japanese cars because they are Japanese. This goes for all markets accept for those of the United States where we are so diverse and optimistic that we blind ourselves to the national pride of our competitors.

Buying American is the only way.

15 - 20% luxury tax on all goods imported to the United States. 5% tax on products that are made by foreign companies but manufactured by US workers. The tax money goes to subsidize its American counterpart and the price of the American product is driven down creating more jobs and boosting both domestic and foreign products. Once the economy is healed people will want 'luxury' foreign goods again.

The US has spent too much money on the never ending wars all over the world and building war machines and weaponaries.. The expenditure does not end when a war stops but will continue until the last veteran and his/her spouse is dead.

    Dear President and Future President,

The country's economic mainstream problems is our foriegn dept. We owe the world bank. We need to sort, restructure our dept on foregn dept and payments. Paying the foeign dept is our only way out of recession. This has to be done ASAP or our country will continue to have this recession. If we do this, this will not only solve the recession when the deficit continue to fall, when we are paying the dept, it will create jobs and economic growth. If this is done, people will continue to have jobs and will be able to pay or restructure thier domestic dept on morgage and loans. We need to do this for the sake of our country and for our children's future.
There are number of ways we can make a payment, or paying the foreign dept and can be done from the following ways.:
    1. Create a money reserve. We can create money reserve on gold, silver, copper, steel.
    2. Create money reserve from foreign currency earned.
    3. Create money reserve from citizens who work abroad.
And so forth. People are losing thier job everyday we need to act now , ASAP.

Bail outs in crisis are mandatory, However, these and lax bankruptcy rules, are teaching that the government will take care of it all, making us irresponsible and feel entitled no matter what. To assure this never happens again, we must immediately, reenact the regulations of the 1930???s, and prosecute big rollers, who caused this economic mess. A constitutional amendment must be created to assure this is law. This will restore trust in government. We cannot wait for the new president to do it.

Our nation has a 53 trillion debt. Obama wants to hand out to all in a socialist spirit. Where is the funding coming from? His tax the "rich corporations" will cause corporate flight to foreign lands drying up jobs assuring national bankruptcy

Our national health care with 15 million without insurance is a crisis. Let us copy the successful European health care systems, which works
Millions do not declare their real earnings, so a flat tax and tax for goods and services would increase revenues substantially.
Oil dependency must immediately phase out by alternate energy. The fear of atomic power, (which is clean, cheap and technically mature) was caused by oil companies, at great harm to our economy and environment. Our planet has about 22 years of oil reserves. If we do not opt for alternate energy, the current economic crisis will look like child???s play when we run out of oil. Our environmental crisis would improve if we use these sources or energy, saving our lives.
Finally, the economic duress caused by the war, is nothing compared to what would happen if we pull out now. This would cause political vacuum emboldening extremists. Encouraging increased attacks to western civilization, further harming our political and economic crisis.

Personally, Instead of the basic stimulus that we got. I would have given every family that paid their taxes a million dollars so that everyone could pay off their mortage, bills, buy a house and pay it off. Go on a trip, etc... Banks end up getting their money back and all. The people of this country would then have a huge birden taken off their shoulders. We wouldn't be so stressed out. Do that for familys/married couples, Single people could get something smaller I would say. Could go either way. I think it would have been much cheaper then the regular stimulus since even people that weren't supposed to get it, got it. I also think we do need to cap ceo pay. Is a ceo really worth more then a firefighter/police officer/or even a doctor? How about paying our military more as well. And health care, should be free to every us citizen except maybe paying some kind of copay per visit and different one time fee depending on the surgery. Our taxes should be going to education, military, cops, firefighters. Etc.. We need to reopen our own factorys. I've heared that taiwan makes our bullets for our military. Don't know if that's true or not. Just seems like as a nation we have no respect any more. We care mainly about materials rather then people. The government should totally be reformed from law by law. We should start from scratch pretty much and make some signifcant switches such as oil(energy in general). And this needs to be done within 3 years.

True energy-independence that maintains mobility at least back and forth to work is one priority. The energy economic indicator is a problem that needs to be brought under control. Minimizing the effects of rather lopsided natural disasters is another priority. How to control the energy economic indicator through a worldwide economic construction stimulus is a topic that I researched. It requires the cooperation of Big Business, Big Labor, and Big Government. Energy independence does not come cheap.

YOU GUYS CAN EASILY REDUCE YOUR HEALTH SPENDINGS JUST BY FEEDING YOUR NATION (AT LEAST THE YOUNGER GENERATION) WITH RIGHT FOOD, AKA GREEN/ORGANIC. LOOK AT YOURSELF, HALF OF AMERICANS ARE OBESE DESPITE THE DAILY TOURS TO GYMS FOR WORK OUTS AND EXERCISES. IN KYRGYZSTAR FOR EXAMPLE, FARMERS DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FUNDS TO USE CHEMICALS/PESTICIDES SO THEY USE ORGANIC/NATURAL FERTILIZERS AND THERE ARE VERY FEW OBESE PEOPLE IN OUR NATION AND NO GYMS REQUIRED TO BE FIT. IN THIS REGARD WHY DON'T YOU TRY TO IMPORT FOOD PRODUCTS AND FEEL THE DIFFERENCE. AS FAR AS I KNOW AMERICANS WHO LIVE AND WORK IN KYRGYZSTAN JUST ADMIRE OUR FOODSTUFF. SO EATING WELL AND RIGHT PRODUCTS COULD IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF YOUR NATION. P.S. YOU MIGHT ASK WHY THEN THE LIFE EXPECTANCY IS LOWER IN KYRGYZSTAN THAN IN U.S. IT'S JUST THE GREASY MEAT THAT'S IN TRADITION OF OUR NATION, AND IT SO TASTY UNLIKE THE MEAT IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD. BUT WE ADMIT THAT WE NEED TO REDUCE IT'S CONSUMPTION COS UNLIKE OUR ANCESTORS WE DON'T NEED TO EAT STRONG GREASY FOOD TO SURVIVE SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS.

Dr. Pete, I agree with you 100%. We also need to be teaching kids about money at a young age. My first day of college, I remember seeing all of these tents set up where people were pushing credit cards in exchange for free t shirts, or movie passes. I can't tell you how many of those kids I watched ruin their credit because they had no idea what they were getting into. We need to be teaching kids about compounded interest. Interest paid and interest earned. How to budget. How to set savings plans to buy something they want instead of paying three times as much using credit. Honestly, we live in a society that is completely and totally driven by credit and it's never been more evident. However, the majority of people in this country couldn't tell you the difference between simple interest and compounded interest. Its a cycle that will continue running until we do something about it. If the parents don't know, its unlikely their kids won't know. So, the cycle continues. It's time we start preparing kids for what they are going to face. Home Ec? Woodshop? That's all well and good, but it's time we start arming them with something that is going to allow themselves to fight through the battles they will face in their future.

Anyone who is not willing to live in the streets because of their mistakes is a mistake! The wage earners of this country are becoming the slaves of Rome to those unworthy of a handout.
