Anyone who is not willing to live in the streets because of their mistakes is a mistake! The wage earners of this country are becoming the slaves of Rome to those unworthy of a handout.

YOU GUYS CAN EASILY REDUCE YOUR HEALTH SPENDINGS JUST BY FEEDING YOUR NATION (AT LEAST THE YOUNGER GENERATION) WITH RIGHT FOOD, AKA GREEN/ORGANIC. LOOK AT YOURSELF, HALF OF AMERICANS ARE OBESE DESPITE THE DAILY TOURS TO GYMS FOR WORK OUTS AND EXERCISES. IN KYRGYZSTAR FOR EXAMPLE, FARMERS DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FUNDS TO USE CHEMICALS/PESTICIDES SO THEY USE ORGANIC/NATURAL FERTILIZERS AND THERE ARE VERY FEW OBESE PEOPLE IN OUR NATION AND NO GYMS REQUIRED TO BE FIT. IN THIS REGARD WHY DON'T YOU TRY TO IMPORT FOOD PRODUCTS AND FEEL THE DIFFERENCE. AS FAR AS I KNOW AMERICANS WHO LIVE AND WORK IN KYRGYZSTAN JUST ADMIRE OUR FOODSTUFF. SO EATING WELL AND RIGHT PRODUCTS COULD IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF YOUR NATION. P.S. YOU MIGHT ASK WHY THEN THE LIFE EXPECTANCY IS LOWER IN KYRGYZSTAN THAN IN U.S. IT'S JUST THE GREASY MEAT THAT'S IN TRADITION OF OUR NATION, BUT IT'S SO TASTY UNLIKE THE MEAT IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD, BUT WE ADMIT THAT WE NEED TO REDUCE IT'S CONSUMPTION, COS UNLIKE OUR ANCESTORS WE DON'T NEED TO EAT GREASY AND STRONG MEAT ANYMORE TO SURVIVE THE SEVERE WEATHER.
I agree wholeheartedly Dr. Pete. What about making financial education a staple in schools. Our economy is driven on credit, but the majority of people are clueless to how it actually works. We are not teaching kids to manage their money. Reason being, many of their parents have no idea how to manage their money. They need to learn about saving, investing, budgeting, and making your money work for you as hard as it possibly can. It's beyond me why this isn't a core subject. Sometimes I wonder if our government wants us in debt.
Wait a second esq 1991... Everyone refers to the " Subprime Mortgage Meltdown", but Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the definition of " Prime" mortgages. They bought the bulk of the mortgages that were originated in this country. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guidelines are about as stringent as they come. What about Wachovia? Again, about as conservative as it gets. Everyone wants to paint the picture of vultures circling around someone dying in the desert, but if you look at the numbers, there are just as many (if not more) of these prime loans that have gone bad. Its all about people that think they can outsmart the system. Adjustable rate mortgages are the culprit. Granted, there are a lot of people out there who were getting loans that should not have been getting loans, but that was in prime, as well as subprime.

I am Dr. Pete Andersen. I just retired as a school supt. Our problem is the creation of more and more social programs so that now everyone feels that Big Brother owes them some kind of entitlement. If they can't get one, they cheat on their taxes. If we would only teach personal accountability for learning and meeting individual needs for learning, food, clothing, and shelter, then students would be personally motivated to do their part. As it is now the welfare system is a train wreck with more people gaining access than there are people willing to go to work to support those who have not or choose not to meet their own needs. My book Purposeful Intent: Motivating Your Mind From Within will come out in mid-December to address how we can motivate people to help themselves. Shouldn't we teach men how to fish to feed themselves?
Sub-prime mortgages aren't what got us in this mess. Rollover mortgages, property flipping, and massive stock market and speculator fraud did. It used to be that a person had to prove he or she had the mettle to save up for a down payment, and make payments on that first house for years until additional equity built up. Too many saw an opportunity to get rich quick, which in itself isn't bad. Not understanding the consequences of failure due to ignorance is..
As for leaders, we need a leader who can inspire us when times are tough. Obama is that man.
If you don't think the sub-prime did not play a roll or understand the roll they played, then you either have not read anything about it or seen any shows about it. It was not the sole reason but it was a big one, because when you have mortgages out there that are not eing paid back, that's not good. The items you cited sound like the typical Demo talking points Obama wants his followers to spit out because no one will question them. What stock market fraud caused housing market to drop and the banks not to have money because people were not paying their mortgages? I'd be interested in knowing.
It turns out that RNC has spent $150,000 on clothes for Sarah Palin. They also spent $100 for a romper and hat for little Trig, which he wore on stage at the GOP convention.
A hundred dollar onesie? (And these people are saying that Obama would be a profligate spender.)
Did you know that the outfit Cindy McCain wore when she appeared at the convention cost $330,000?
The RNC says that later Sarah's clothes will be donated to charity. OK, so some homeless person will get to wear this stuff on the streets of New Orleans. (Maybe this is the RNC's version of "trickle down spending.") But wouldn't the homeless be better served by $150,000 donation to a shelter or a food bank than by designer clothing?
Fifteen years ago, McCain wrote an amendment to tighten the law on using campaign funds for personal items like clothing and stylists. In May of 1993, McCain said this on the Senate floor "The use of campaign funds for items which most Americans would consider to be strictly personal reasons, in my view, erodes public confidence and erodes it significantly."
I guess he forgot what his prior position was. Again.
Just like he forgot that he used to be pro-Choice and pro-gay marriage and pro-immigration reform. He also forgot that he used to be afiliated with ACORN, and with G. Gordon Liddy. If he is lying to cover up what his prior positions have been, shame on him. If he really can't remember, maybe the detractors who claim his mind is aging are correct.
One last thought: is the GOP paying for Bristol Palin's maternity wear?
This is such phony hypocrisy over this issue. All the bloggers and comments suggesting the Repubs aren't really for the little man, this is misuse of money, etc. Have you looked lately at who supports Obama? George Soros! Movie stars who spend much more than this on their clothes and their kids' clothes. Have you seen the pictures of the starts with their Bugaboo strollers (or whatever they are called) that cost thousands? The Dem darling is Ted Kennedy and look at his lifestyle. Look where Obama lives. Look where Obama stayed in NYC recently and his room service bill: lobsters and Iranian cavier and champagne? Do you know how much Nancy Pelosi is worth? Isn't she the one who - after becoming speaker - wanted her own private govt.-paid jet to ferry her back and forth to California when other Senators and Reps. fly commercial? I bet she spends a fortune on clothes, too. And I just heard tonight she promised $1,000,000 to the Dem candidate in Minnesota for his campaign. Who has that kind of money? Look at your own candidate. Have you seen the article about Biden's $2 million surplus over the past couple elections and how he used it - not for charity or to give it back to the people who donated it - he "paid" his sister who "works" on his campaign and invested in or paid his son's lobbyist firm (bet you didn't know his sone was a lobbyist till daddy ran for president). Did you know that while Obama wants to take more of YOUR money, he holds onto every red cent he gets? Find his tax returns posted on the web; they span 2000 through 2006. While the McCains give hundreds of thousands (his single return shows charitable contributions that I believe equal 25% of his AGI), Mr. Obama was giving around .5% (yes, 1/2 of a percent). When he made $250,000 to $300,000 - the bracket where you become "rich" - he gave $2,500! I bet he will force others to pay more than that with tax increases! And when his income went to $1.7 million, he only ave around $70,000. Even factoring in taxes, he could not have given three times that? He would have been left probably with $400,000 or $500,000 to live on. So for all those people who moan about not even making what they spent on her wardrobe, ask Mr. Obama about his lifestyle and why he wants to spread your wealth around but not his own. Notice the MSM doesn't talk about that.
I disagree completely with Professor Krugman except on one item: these are wild times. The 1930s were a simpler time. People were willing to work. That is why FDR???s public works programs were so successful. The welfare state has completely changed the playing field. The only people willing to work these days are Mexican immigrants. Just ask any employer who has placed an ad for blue collar workers, or even white collar store clerks ??? they don???t get responses.
As for Obama???s umbrella health care plan for people who don???t qualify for Medicaid or have health care through employers ??? just how long do you think it will take employers to figure out that if they discontinue health care to their employees, the government will pick up the tab. And these same people ??? the ones who are working ??? will have to pay higher taxes for the privilege. It???s called spreading the wealth, or punishing incentive, whether you are Joe the Plumber or Jane the receptionist. The problem is not so much with coverage as it is with unreasonable prices for prescriptions and medical procedures.
Are you serious? They don't get responses? Blue collar workers have vanished from the planet? No, they don't get responses because NO One wants to work for an overly mouthy manager that insists on dishing out crap for minimum wage that doesn't add up to the price of gasoline to get you there for your four hour shift. The only reason "Mexican immigrants" are interested in the job is because the alternative is living on a landfill near the border with forty seven of their closest relatives. Not to mention the possibility of being worked to death at an American companies assembly line that has been relocated to avoid America's human rights standards. What you are saying is "Americans should except less humane standards and through out any self respect just to earn a dollar." Come on, you're talking about spreading the wealth and ridiculous prices which are totally on target but saying no one applies is none sense. I hold an MFA and I've applied for work everywhere and have not received one call. I've got over fifteen years in the Broadcasting industry as a producer, technician, as well as experience in retail, contracting labor, seasonal farming and the list could continue for another three pages. The problem is bigger. The problem is as mentioned in another post is misrepresentation of assets. The problem is greed and the driving force to be sneaky about it. The problem extends into our political system very deeply and has created the atmosphere around wall street that has strangled our nation. It's like playing Black Jack with a table of MIT students and we're not on the inside no matter how much we spend.
The only thing to realize is BIG OIL and the financial companies rule this country. I'm sure there are many more with their hand in the proverbial "cookie jar". The trickle down effect of Reagonomics has come to fruition. It should be more like trickle up and the average shareholder can't do a damn thing about it!!
This is the basis of most rebublicans. "I'm gonna make X amount of money and I should invest it in bogus shcemes. I will be set for life asnd not have to worry about taxes" Way to hide your patriotism.
Can you explain how "trickle up" helps? Yes, it would be nice for lower-income individuals to have maybe $1,000 extra a year but how is that going to start a business? Grow a business? Create jobs?
Is it just me, or do some of these economic geniuses seem totally enthralled with centralization of power? The idea that the government can just "inject enough money to restore the system" is preposterous. If you injected enough money to cover all the bad debts, you would completely destroy the value of the currency. If they want to give people information, they should debate how the Federal Reserve's policies, combined with fractional reserve lending created this pile of fake money that investment houses thought they could grow forever.
It is not a free market when 1 guy at a private central bank (the Federal Reserve) can set interest rates. The Treasury secretary and the Federal Reserve chairman would not have to (or be able to) make announcements on Sundays about which investments they are going to bail out with taxpayer dollars, in order to keep Asian investors from dumping their "investments".
Here's a crazy proposal from a non-Nobel prize winner
1) Currency that is worth something, and that is not controlled by a banking cartel, but instead is controlled by the people???s duly elected representatives and / or tied to a limited commodity.
2) Lending and interest rates are set by the market. Not the policies of a private banking institution
3) Pay for government as you go. Want a war? Hike up the tax rate 50% for the next few years. I'm sure if it is truly necessary, people will support it. There will probably be far fewer military quagmires, which turn out to be black holes for lives and money.
4) Decouple the people's dependency on government. It is the only logical and ethical course of action. The government can't possibly take care of everyone's financial, educational, and health-related needs. If anyone doubts this, please repeat the words "Katrina", "Iraq", and "department of motor vehicles" as many times as is necessary to wake yourself up from your communist dreams.
5) Restore all powers not delegated to the Federal government back to the states. Why put all the tax money in one pot, just to have investment banks lobby congress to steal it? This way, people can discuss use of taxes locally, rather than lobby the federal government on what type of sex-ed should be taught in schools.
6) Stop listening to people who are wrong all the time. Bernanke and Paulson have been wrong for the past two years, and these economists are suggesting that with unlimited money and power they can fix everything. Would you buy a used car from someone who gave you bad advice for two years? Would you empty your bank account for them if one of their friends or co-workers from the Federal Reserve said that THIS TIME they're right?
Just a thought. Maybe if I pretend that I believe in the virtues of socialism and Keynesian economics long enough I will win a Nobel Prize and Newsweek will print this.
I wonder if either candidate will use this crisis for a future vision of America. It seems like all the plans right now are reactive to problems, not proactive to them.
I definitely think things should change drastically, no matter who makes it, but I still believe that the mistake was not raising taxes during a war.
If you have to "wonder" then you have not been paying attention to Obama or read his website. Obama and his buds (Pelosi, Reid, et al) have a vision alright: to use our taxpayers' dollars for social engineering. To right the wrongs of the classes by taking my money and giving it to others. To tell businesses what they have to do - provide this benefit, don't do that. I don't say we should not help people, but I think there are too many people who just don't want to work. I have always said, if there are so many unemployed who want to work, then there should be no want ads. Even if it's a minimum-wage job, it still would pay more over 40 hours than collecting welfare. Yes, there are aspects of our govt that are socialistic to some degree, but that's the point: do you want it to go any further? If you do - if you want to become a more socialist country that tases the heck out of businesses so they leave, then vote Obama. (I read an article somewhere today that included a chart that showed the highest unemployment rates were in countries with the highest tax rates.)
"There is no right to health. Health is something one earns through a lifetime of proper living"; really? And can you lead us to that checklist where people can choose to which parents or social class they would want to be born such that they are afforded a pathway to "proper living"? Maybe you can also guide us to how to avoid traffic accidents and cancers, and how to choose our own genes before we are born such that we are not born physically challanged! The fact remains that the human society chose and decided to not rely entirely on the natural order of "survival for those who managed proper living" to regulate society and human interaction. That's why we don't adopt a survival for the fittest mentality and watch the poor elderly and unlucky ones die before our eyes. We do need health care simply because we are humans and not animals.
Proper living and taking care of oneself is not something that is only afforded to the rich. You don't have to buy your kids Big Macs and giant cokes at age 6. Do you know that waht is today considered a "small" drink used to be a "large"? A kid's meal drink today is what a small used to be for adults. We all know about exercise and proper diet and the ills of smoking. These are things we can do that don't cost a lot of money: avoid bad foods, take walks and stop smoking and drinking. Now before youi go off on the class issue, somehow those lower classes you are going to probably bring up always seem to have money for cell phones, cigarettes, iPods, and video games. Instead of all those items, put what money you do get to better food. And, you get food stamps. It seems in today's world with all the gadgets, we seem to think that those gadgets are must-haves, so we expect the govt to provide us with the necessities in life so we can buy the fun things. My parents did not have money when I was a child but we did not spend money on extras as the expense of the necessities: food, shelter, and health care. Maybe our country needs to get its priorities in order. Oh, and if we want the govt. to pay for all of our health care, then the govt. needs to be able to tell people what they cannot and can do. For example, if you want to get real "1984," then let's hand out cards that allow you access to fast-food. If you are overwieght by too much, you don't get one. Or cards for certain foods to accomplish the same thing. If govt. is using my money to pay for people who have diseases that can be prevented by proper living, then I want a say in how they live to avoid those diseases.
Don't blame Alan Greenspan as he only pandered to the average person's dream - to arrive having slogged it out for ages. The Americans fell for it like all of mankind since time immemorial - slog to enjoy the goodies! Unfortunately, life's not a sprint but rather a marathon and so, generation is a new beginning with its own end and therefore the notion of reaping what you've not sown is a myth. Sadly that myth has been the tale of the last twenty five years, the results of which are amply evident in these "wild times".
The solution? Shirts off, back to the grinding stone and all pulling together!
Verdict on Greenspan - regretfully, he abdicated his responsibility when he prostituted his integrity in playing to an audience!
Remember that age old adage, "your chickens will come home to roost" - so populists beware!

lol ... we expect to much ...
One of these men said we expect too mucy of our leaders. Well, in this race one of the possible leaders has created the high expectation himself: Obama, by promising to fix the coutry's ills, to save the world, to convince despots of their bad ways. He and his followers have made him out to be the Messiah. And I am not imagining things. If you saw that creepy video of the little kids singing about Obama's going to save the world and do all these other things, you would have to agree. Was that statement nothing more than another Obama supporter giving his chosen candidate a way to save face when he disappoints everyone who is expecting big things: "I didn't give you all you were promised, but gee, you were just expecting too much out of me."
"For example, a ban on lending to uncreditworthy customers might well make sense." I know I am not a Nobel-prize winner but the aforementioned quote is only common-snse. They want to cut spending on the military; they want to bail out the homeowners a second time; they want to bail out state and local govts whose spending is outside the budget. Again, common sense tells me we are going to be faced with the same problems down the road - having to bail them out again. I am sorry, but if you lost your house because you maybe shouldn't have had it in the first place, why bail them out? I read an article about two sisters who bought homes next door to each other and had lost their homes when their husbands (house painters) had a slow down in business. But the more glaring issue in that article was that these people were given loans where the mortgage was over 60% (yes, $2,000 out of $3,200 net pay) of their pay. When they got their house, they thought they could do it. How do you support 2 kids and 2 adults on $1,200 a month after your mortgage? I am sorry but that is plain stupidity. And these kinds of mortgages wer made because of the elephant in the room no one mentioned (and no, I don't mean Republs): the policies of the CRA, democrats and Bill Clinton who thought everyone should buy a house and the biggest house possible. In some respects there was not enough regulation over Fannie and others, but yet there was too much regulation pressuring banks to make those loans (and pressure from groups like ACORN). I don't know of anything the govt. provides that private sector cannot provide more efficiently and cheaper; govt. health care is going to be a mess. Didn't Mass.'s program end up costing two or three times the estimate? And the care is not going to be what people think it is going to be. I also saw something where the unemployment rates of countries was paired against their tax rates; higher taxes, higher unemployment. So, do we really need more taxes? Tell state and local govts. to balance their budgets; we cannot keep bailing them out for irresponsibility. Tell our govt. to stop spending. We just have to face that we cannot give everyone everything.
commonone,
Someone's 'need' cannot become a licence to put a gun on someone else's head and demand that the need should be fulfilled. If your criteria of need is universally applied, it should apply equally to anything a person would ever need. Yes, you cannot choose the illness you genetically aquire or the injuries you accidentally suffer. But just because you have been unfortunate enough, it doesn't mean the misfortune should be equally shared. Health care is a value, like any other and it takes years of dedicated effort to train oneeself in a medical speciality. It is as unfair to demand that someone just gift you years of his sweat and blood because you need the help as it would be to demand that Nike give you a pair of shoes because you have none and really 'need' them because your feet are bloody and sore from walking barefoot

"CUT THE SIZE OF GOVERNMENT"! Set in motion a series of governmental agency and Program cuts to REDUCE the SIZE of this goverment that is "SMOTHERING" all Americans.....reduce the Captial Gains Tax (thus allowing for Billions upon Billions of Captial dollars) to flood into the investment side, step up Tax Credits to Auto & Energy incentives, start building nucular power plants........AND....."turn loose" the American Enterpirse system to go after domistic oil.....and simply say......."DRILL"!
These 5 items would further excite the American public that "GOVERNMENT"...."gets it".....and the world would see that "America Get's it"! DO NOT RAISE TAXES ON ANYONE!!
