As an Independent I???ve tried to be and advocated being objective and rational while, as we all realize, there is simply a lot of pressure to keep us from doing either. It would be easy to say that we can???t trust anything said but then how could we ever measure. Today all of the candidates, including John McCain, find fault with the Bush-Cheney administration and strongly advocate that real change is absolutely needed, so it could be as simple as determining who to believe? By anyone???s measure Sarah Palin is different, short on qualifications and extremely bold for sure, yet many feel she is impressive and then Senator Obama doesn???t have real extensive qualifications either and presents, impressively but none the less, a bold approach. McCain accuses Obama of flip-flopping yet anyone would have to be blind not to recognize that McCain has literally been all over the place. Obama is attacked for all kinds of irrational, far fetched, off the point things but that seems to say more against the critics than against Obama. McCain and Bidden both have long running experience but nothing that impresses as being with commanding control or to the point of instilling complete confidence. We could just identify with the political parties but then that leaves us divided between conservative and liberal, between more of the same or change, concentration on Special Interests and a select few or on everyday concerns and there really is no end to those emotional debates. It goes on but the result is simply the same as there is little reality to base a rational and objective decision on, no real help to be counted on as being honestly complete and yet the problems today are drastic and our needs are formidable. For me it comes down to simply accepting some of what the candidates say, finding a consistency I can identify with, and then on seeing it supported in their history and in logical probability. In my thinking, John McCain has a history of doing whatever works best for him politically, including strongly supporting the Bush-Cheney policies and only now, at the last minute when desperate, faulting those same policies and advocating change. Sarah Palin???s bold, aggressive, self-focused personality (to even using her baby as a prop) disgusts me and is as if she would be a real problem if in any higher office (it could be said she already has been a problem in her current office). Joe Bidden seems to be very qualified and as if he would be a real asset to the president and to the country as vice-president. Barack Obama???s history and current presentation seems very consistent in offering a thoughtful, rational and conscientious approach to everything, including being able to solicit cooperation and provide direction in getting things done and to honestly benefit everyone. Rationally and objectively, to me, the decision seems to be logically sound for Obama-Bidden.

Has anyone kept up with this? A McCain supporters posted a comment regarding this incident asking why Obama supporters are so violent. I replied to this poster asking why the B that was supposedly carved into her face by the "Scary Angry Black man" Of Course ! was backwards. The B looks the way it would if a right handed person did it to themselves.

Anyway the police have found several inconsistencies in her story and she had now remembered new details such as a sexual assault. She did not mention this sexual assult initially, this is a new memory. The police. Also she first stated that she walked to the bank and the attacker got mad when he saw the McCain button on her jacket, then she stated that the attacker got mad when he saw the McCain bumber sticker on her car??????????????????????????

The police are giving this woman a lie detector. I am listing the links to several articles regarding this incident. Please note the major differences in Ms. Todd's stories. In one version Ms. Todd states that the man sat on her chest and carved a backwards B into her cheek. In another version she told the police that she passed out and when she woke up she felt a stinging on her cheek but did not know what happened to her face.

I don't like to see Obama's campaign taking risks. They've got this election in the bag if they just play it safe and stick to the issues.

Not to worry, but don't stop campaigning. Senator obama is cooler than a truck full of cucumbers. Only hate is coming from McCain/Palin and Republicans and Independents are defecting in droves. Those that are hanging on are those who march to Ole Rushbo's orders and lack the intellegence to see through him and the other shock jocks. even if they did the courage just isn't there to say so!

McCain and Failin' together are as dumb as a bag of hammers and have a snowflake's chance in hell of getting elected after the 8 year coathanger abortion the Bush dictatorship has put us through.

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Newsweek is left wing propaganda at it's finest. What happened to fair and balanced? I guess that is only on FOX.

    • Posted By: mrjungles @ 10/24/2008 2:44:46 AM

LOL- FAIR AND BALANCED what a joke.

      • Posted By: fccFH @ 10/24/2008 11:38:24 AM

Newsweek has plenty of conservative commentators- I will give you that on CNN and MSNBC there are some people that lean left, but again, there are people like Joe on MSNBC who are clear Republicans. However, to say that FOX is Fair and Balanced is the biggest load of BS ever- they are extremist and not a reliable news source. They provide as much pertinent and factual information as the "news" programs on Comedy Central.

  • Posted By: LVUONG @ 10/23/2008 2:15:15 PM

Another omedy show, it reminds me of comedians like Bill Maher, Tina Faye, David Letterman, John Edwards, John Kerry and Joe Biden. American people are smarter than that, and we understand a tested leader with time-proven records, and real life-time government-achievements. Obama will say ANYTHING, and promises ANYTHING, to fish for votes.

    • Posted By: mudpup @ 10/23/2008 4:09:27 PM

I cannot let this go without commenting. First, what makes you think McCain has "experience"? He was a prisoner of war but was never "in charge" of troops. Second, he was a US Senator for over 25 years, again, not "in charge" of anyone other than his Congressional staff. Third, what makes you think someone with "military experience" will be a better leader? Look at many of those with a military background currently running countries - The current leaders of the following countries are lead by men with military backgrounds - Venezuela, Cuba, Libya, Tanzania, North Korea, Chad, Somolia, and until recently, Iraq, Pakistan, and Iran. Yes, an experienced military man makes me feel so much better - NOT.
And finally, simply because a person has "experience" does NOT mean that person will be successful.
As for McCain being a leader, lets see. He has changed his campaign message several times. At this point, McCain has changed his message so much that I no longer know what he really stands for. When the Credit Crisis started earlier this year, McCain mentioned it VERY LITTLE during his campaign. And finally, it wasn't until after the primaries were over that McCain even started talking about change. Obama had been talking about it all through the primaries. None of those sound like anything a "leader" would do but it does sound quite a bit like what a "follower" would do. So I guess you will be happy voting for a "follower" this November.

      • Posted By: dorf @ 10/24/2008 11:35:06 AM

Mudpup - great post. very true. McCain has no more executive experience than Obama. The choice has to be based on policies, vision, temperament, intellect, knowledge, communication skills. My pick is Obama.

    To Dorf:
None of us know for certain the agenda of Al Queda, but to say leave them alone and things will
take care of theselves is native to say the least. Iran is close to delivery of a Nuke. I for one don't
want anymore surprises like 9/11. When voting American need to think on a global scale.

    • Posted By: dorf @ 10/24/2008 11:14:39 AM

I do think global - I speak four languages and travel overseas some. I read a broad spectrum of publications from all over the world. I do welcome new information, so I'm glad you commented..

You misinterpret my comments - terrorist organizations feed on fear and violence. The more violence we perpetrate, the more excuses the terrorists have for saying we are evil and trying to justify their bad deeds. The more we talk about them and spread fear about them, the more energy they get from that.

Europe has dealt with terrorists for decades - With the exception of the UK this time (to support us) - They do not invade countries whenever a terrorist attack takes place. They do not embark on propaganda campaigns nationally that demonize everyone of that ethnic or religious group and arrest anyone who looks like they might be of that group. They understand one simple premise - terrorists are not national - they are a sub-set of a larger society. They must be pursued in a police-type action - not military invasion and occupation.

In the 1970's Baader Meinhof terrorized corporate leaders. The terrorists were captured, the violence stopped. In Ireland, the British had occupied and used force to attempt to get the Irish to peacefully co-exists with their occupation of Northern Ireland. Only when the occupation stopped along with the violence and propaganda - did the terrorists stop. After a plan was downed in Scotland, air strikes were done to make a point to Lybia. We did not occupy or invade. It took a long time, but Lybia is quieter now. Life went on in Europe after these events, and rhetoric was not at a fever pitch to whip up hate and mistrust.

My point is that terrorists cannot be intimidated by invasion or occupation. Look at the Russians in Afghanistan, the Japanese in Vietnam, the French in Vietnam, the Americans in Vietnam. Invaders are universally hated, and folks rally around opposition forces whenever occupation occurs.

My other point is that we should not have such a military presence in the Middle East. Though we may or may not like them - they are sovereign countries who have not attacked us. We will earn anger and retribution for this that fringe groups will use to justify acts of terror. History shows that without that wind of righteous indignation, the flames of terror subside.

Senator Barack Obama is showing surprising strength among portions of the political coalition that returned George W. Bush to the White House four years ago, a cross section of support that, if it continues through Election Day, would exceed that of Bill Clinton in 1992, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News polls.

Underscoring the building strength of Mr. Obama's candidacy in the final phase of the campaign, he was ahead of Mr. McCain among various groups that voted for Mr. Bush four years ago: those with incomes greater than $50,000 a year; married women; suburbanites; white Catholics, and is even competitive among white men, a group that has not voted for a Democrat over a Republican since 1972, when pollsters began surveying people after they voted.

Stick a fork in it, baby.....This thing is over!!!!!!

Get real, Obama might be "change" but not change for the better. The thought of him as President is terrifying. Be really honest with yourself. As you lie in bed at night, who would you feel safe with running our country? John McCain without question, no contest, hands down.

    • Posted By: dorf @ 10/24/2008 10:55:25 AM

Why not? He's smart, has worked hard, is an example of a true American, has a vision for this country with our values, he can think straight, and he has developed clear and achievaable plans for this country.

He's ethical and honors his commitments - worked hard to earn scholarships to go to college, and has worked hard since to pay student loans back in full, married to his one and only wiife (McCain is on wife#2 - a wealthy heiress), has never been part of an investigation into his character (Palin has one going on right now, and McCain was very much a part of the Keating 5 scandal leading to losses of millions of $$ in savings), he values family and faith, and he has tried to run a campaign that is relatively positive.

Why does he bother you? Some of McCain's mud-slinging hit near you? Are you one of the people who live in fear and anger and mistrust based on hearsay provided by a partisan campaign?

He is new, he is younger (we need some fresh air - Bush and McCain have ruined the air quality in Washington), he represents tomorrow. What has made this country great in the past is its vision for the future. If we gravitate back to a man of the mid 20th century for our leadership, we cannot move forward.

      Please consider this.

They are spending big money, while the rest of us suffer during the national economic crisis, it is a global problem. Obama's "Bottom-up econonmy" is simply socialist or communist philosophy, a big well-fare system, with big government-control, bigger spending, more regulations, and less freedom for people. Thoss who work will be punished, or taxed, to finance big spending and well-fare. Socialism or communism does not work well in many Asian and European countries. Barack Obama reminds us of Jimmy Carter, he will cause deeper recession, or even another Great Depression.

Comment: First of all, I am a lady. An older, quite old actually, working professional lady. I work in medicine, and all who disagree with me can kindly kiss my as_.
Thios election is not only for us. It is for the good of the World. WE ARE the light of the world, like it or not. We are not the only ones suffering. We are all in this together and when the sh_t hits the fan, the World looks to us. They might not admit it..............or even know it, but they do. For it is us who stand for freedom, rights, order, kindess, temperance, intelligence, love of God, faith in self and most of all, HUMANITY.
The world is watching with baited breath.................wondering..................bemused by the presumably angry little giant, the country with the "good" people, the country folk who agree with attacking soviergn nations with no legitimate proof and decimating a whole people, with little or no remorse. Who are pro life, but pro death penalty, as well. Who consume more resources than anyone else wastefully, and then espouse conservation.
We have been beaten, raped, pillaged, defiled, humiliated and left for dead by our current Republinist administration. To let it continue would be massochism and we surely aren't for that....................are we? To let Bush have another 4 years.....................with that woman, and I use the term loosely after listening to her venomous, divisive hogwash for the last 2 months, cause that's what McCain is..................an older...................MUCH older, version of Bush with the temperament of a pitbull (no lipstick) and the steadiness of the San Andreas fault we are saying we will settle for less than the best and quite possibly, as far from the best that is imaginable and elect a man who throws racal epitath's around like a hackey sack and get's so angry when questioned that his fat white head turns blue and SUPPPORTS Carribou Barbie and thinks she's the MOST qualified VP pick ever.
The world mocks us. They laugh at us, they feel pity for us, they don't get us and they really don't care about us.
But, they copy us and we ultimately set the precedent for humanity and steady governance with a conscience and just purpose. If we fail, the whole world will soon follow. After all................in other countries when all hope is lost, hope is dashed and dreams are killed, where do they want to go.......................AMERICA BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let's show them we value intelligence, reasoning, hope and just policies for all, not just the wealthy. Let's show 'em we can be great again and lead the world through the Energy revoultion like we did with the Industrial one and give hope to the world, again.
It's time to start over. You can't but bad milk back in the fride and hope it will come out better tomorrow, which is exactly what voting another Republinist into the office would be like doing.
It would be like giving Hitler a second chance.

I to am a older professional woman in medicine. too..with that said..you forgot to mention another group that is watching us...waiting for the right moment.....planning......waiting for us to get our eyes off our most pressing issue......waiting for us to let our guard down......watching our every move........with this threat lumming over us I don't think I want a baby senator with no military experience in that hot seat...I want someone with prove experience who knows the diffrence between a saw and a m16...I have a son in the Infantry in Iraq and another in the Marines...my most precious gifts to me...and I would not want Obama to be their commander in chief...I can't even say the word coomander with his name without wincing..He voted against supplying my son with the armour he needs to protect his life....he voted present most of the time or he voted so far to the left that he is the most liberal person in congress.......you people want to give the leberals full complete power cause your mad at Bush??? very ignorant reason to sell our country short......Jave you not noticed that we have not been attacked in this country under Bushes watch?????
If we let down our guard for selfish reasons don't think Al Quida woun't take advantage of a military weak president......there the ones that are laughing..there the ones that are going to benifit if Obama is elected...heck they will view it like they have a friend in the white house.......so if you all insist on voting for Obama then we all better be prepared for attacks on a large scale in this country...we an't seen nothing yet....

      • Posted By: dorf @ 10/24/2008 10:21:30 AM

I forgot one thing - Al Queda would have no interest or support if the US had a wise and peaceful government. The Bush propaganda has repeated how they are after us - and many here believe it. Well - they are now because Bush has done everything he can to antagonize them. If we leave the Middle East - Al Queda loses all its energy and for the most part disappears.

The rest of the world would respect Obama - and be relieved if we did not have another war monger in the White House. They love "the idea" of America, and are deeply saddened by the neo-con trashing of all that is good here. They are hoping we have the wisdom to see a change is needed. McCain is more of the same. He needs to retire and go home to one of his eight houses to bar-b-que.

      • Posted By: dorf @ 10/24/2008 10:03:34 AM

How can you say were were not attacked under Bush's watch? Remember September 11, 2001? Bush had been in office almost a full year.

Obama would have saved you and your son the grief of Iraq - a war we should never have started - where there was NO CONNECTION TO 9/11. I wonder how many times this truth needs to be re-told!!!!

The Republicans (actually Cheney's neo-cons) wanted this war - they screamed that anyone who voted against it was un-American, they disgraced us in the eyes of the world by going back on our most basic principles - NEVER starting an unprovoked war, condoning torture, incarcerating people with no legal charges against them for years, mocking our allies, discarding years of support for the United Nations, using false evidence to try to justify the war to the international community, need I go on????

I am so sorry your family has endured the pain of this war - but your son volunteered for this service, and you voted for Bush/Cheney probably - so you were part of why your son went to Iraq without body armor. No decent president would ever send troops improperly equipped. Your choice of Bush and now McCain is an example of how this country gets into these messes, then Bush tries wot weasel out of his responsibility for all the suffering.

I just watched a very moving film about the section of Arlington Cemetary where the Iraq vets are buried. I cried all the way through. Such a waste of our beautiful sons and husbands and daughters and mothers. The film did not talk politics - it just showed how the families came to the cemetary to be with those they lost. Shame on George Bush for the pain he has caused. Shame on John McCain who voted for the war and never challenged his party to bring the troops home. Shame on every American who was more worried about whether we are "winning:" instead of whether we did the right thing invading a country that never attacked us.

        1) Bush was AWOL, I was made aware of allegations concerning several violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) by George W. Bush during the Vietnam War. The alleged acts include being Absent Without Leave (UCMJ Article 86) for a period of more than a year from his National Guard assignments in Texas and Alabama. According to the UCMJ, a person who is AWOL for more than 30 days with evidence of no intent to return to duty is guilty of Desertion. (UCMJ Article 85) http://www.awolbush.com/

        2) Cheney never enlisted Although Cheney never served in the military, and managed to dodge service during the Vietnam War with five student deferments,http://www.historycommons.org/context.jsp?item=a012001cheneydifferent

        3) McCain hides behind the POW flag but what about his RECORD...McCain file the Navy released contained 19 pages -- a two-page overview and 17 pages detailing Awards and Decorations. Each of these 17 pages is stamped with a number. These numbers range from 0069 to 0636. When arranged in ascending order, they precisely track the chronology of McCain's career. It seems reasonable to ask the Navy whether there are at least 636 pages in McCain's file, of which 617 weren't released to the Associated Press.

Some of the unreleased pages in McCain's Navy file may not reflect well upon his qualifications for the presidency. From day one in the Navy, McCain screwed-up again and again, only to be forgiven because his father and grandfather were four-star admirals. McCain's sense of entitlement to privileged treatment bears an eerie resemblance to George W. Bush's. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeffrey-klein/mccains-secret-questionab_b_107409.html

4)McCain voted against your son's much needed equipment But not that many really, truly know just how horrific his voting record is when it comes to the troops. And it is pretty consistent ??? whether it is for armor and equipment, for veteran???s health care, for adequate troop rest or anything that actually, you know, supports our troops http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/articleid/9559

        5) As a POW you would think that he is FOR finding missing MIA/POW but his record shows otherwise. What happens in Vietnam STAYS in Vietnam. Given his wartime experiences as a POW in Vietnam, Sen. John McCain was by default the most powerful and influential member of the Select Committee. Members on both sides of the aisle deferred to his judgment; reporters hung on his every pronouncement. And so when McCain, his chief of staff Mark Salter and their allies on the Select Committee joined forces with top Bush administration officials to assail, ridicule, attack, discredit, photoshop, retouch, manipulate, massage and/or "cherry-pick" the intelligence in order to destroy its intelligence value and keep the matter of live POWs from becoming an issue in the 1992 election, the live POWs never had a chance.http://www.usvetdsp.com/aug08/mccain_unfit.htm

It is better not to have served than to serve dishonorably.

We do not have the right to take any of what we are afforded for granted or one day we will be the refugees/immigrants and the people we so easily refuse safe harbor to now we will be begging for them to let us come into their space and praying for mercy.

It's funny how the guy can smile nice for the camera. He's probably gotten acting lessons from his hollywood buds. Think about it . . . Obama has a large percentage of hollywood voting for him and McCain has a large percentage of our troops voting for him. I would much rather have our troops behind me than hollywood holding my hand. The same people with courage and honor that sign up to fight for our country and for others are standing behind McCain. It's pretty pitiful if you ask me.

It's no wonder that he's outspending McCain four to one. Amazing what one can do when you're willing to say and do anything to get into office! Even more amazing is he has people like you that fall for it.

Go to The Military Times Newspaper Poll
        68% for McCain

His campaign isn't based on "rich buddies", the vast majority of his campaign contributions have come from donors giving less than $200. There is nothing desperate about it, this TV time was booked weeks ago. And I would rather have Obama holding the hands of our troops as he brings them home rather than McCain holding their hands as he ships more off to Iraq and other fronts. The most pitiful thing in this campaign was watching McCain, a formerly upstanding public servant, sell out and become just another cog in the Republican machine.

Then please explain to me how the majority of men and women who are away from home and doing all the fighting still say they will support McCain? Please enlighten me.

    • Posted By: neos @ 10/23/2008 10:16:53 PM

130 out of 4, 000 aye or nay. How many has Johnnie missed? Well there is that one about the New GI Bill he blew off and a number of others involving veteran issues and a host more.

But hey, you are getting off message here. More fear-mongering if you please. And the unbridled 'Christian' hate thing works great for you...

Oh yeah, now you're talking, bringing up a wedge issue that Americans are sick of talking about. That will really scare the moderates away from McCain. Let's just hope no one finds out that the vote was a political ploy by republicans and had no bearing on laws already in effect in Illinois protecting the born-alive infants. But I won't tell anybody if you don't . And I KNOW that YOU won't.

MEAN WHILE THE MILITARY OVERWHELMING SUPPORT JOHN McCAIN OVER BARACK OBAMA 70% TO 23 %

        • Posted By: neos @ 10/23/2008 10:30:11 PM

The article clearly states that it is neither scientific OR representative of the military as a whole. I will be glad to explain further if you need it. It is essentially like one of those goofy FOX phone-in surveys...

Another gullible one. Those numbers are false. An unscientific voluntary survey is not a poll. If you need me to explain why, let me know but I'm kind of busy here playing with Unholy...
