Along with the SDS Students for Democratic Society, Weathermen Underground, the Black Panther Party also actively opposed the Vietnam War. Barack Obama received the support of Southside Chicago Congressman and former Black Panther party member Bobby L. Rush during his bid for the Illinois US Senate seat.

The Black Panther Party along with the Weathermen Underground prolonged John McCains captivity and caused him to receive extra beatings. It is ironic, that Bill Ayers led the antiwar protests during the Vietnam era that caused John McCain to receive extra beatings and to experience nearly six years of captivity, and today Barack Obama has been leading antiwar calls against the Iraq war.

Barack Obama can not understand why John McCain is not happy that Barack Obama has not kept a distance from Bill Ayers.

If Barack Obama had walked in John McCains or any of the other 600 American POWs shoes just one day, he would have no problem understanding why he should have kept his distance from Bill Ayers.
The word shunning comes to mind. If Barack Obama would have shunned Bill Ayers and members of the Black Panthers Party this would not be an issue in the campaign.

Three surveys -- from the Associated Press-GfK, George Washington University and an Investors Business Daily/TIPP poll - - show McCain closing the gap with Obama.

The AP poll puts Obama at 44 percent to McCain's 43 percent, compared with a 7 percentage point advantage for Obama in their September survey. The GW Battleground poll showed Obama's edge at 2 points, down from 7 points in the middle of October, while the IDB/TIPP tracking survey has the margin for the Democrat narrowing to 1 point from 5 points at the start of the week.

AP poll: Candidates running nearly even 10/22/08

Neck-and-neck results are a departure from many recent national polls
WASHINGTON - The presidential race tightened after the final debate, with John McCain gaining among whites and people earning less than $50,000, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll that shows McCain and Barack Obama essentially running even among likely voters in the election homestretch.

The poll, which found Obama at 44 percent and McCain at 43 percent, supports what some Republicans and Democrats privately have said in recent days: that the race narrowed after the third debate as Republican-leaning voters drifted home to their party.

Obama's tax and spending plans alone would be bad enough, but add Reid and Pelosi to the mix, with the three of them controlling both houses of Congress and the executive branch without any effective restraint, and you have something that should causes concern even among moderate Democrats.
See Wall Street Journal: A Liberal Supermajority:

Don???t believe me, see Barney Franks Comments on the news, including face the nation last week, stating that Democrats in Congress intend to raise taxes and go on a spending spree.

You will also here him try to shift the blame away from himself, but what was he saying in 2003 when problems in Freddie and Fannie first started to surface?
I want to begin by saying that I am glad to consider the legislation, but I do not think we are facing any kind of a crisis. That is, in my view, the two government sponsored enterprises we are talking about here, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, are not in a crisis. We have recently had an accounting problem with Freddie Mac that has led to people being dismissed, as appears to be appropriate. I do not think at this point there is a problem with a threat to the Treasury.
I must say we have an interesting example of self-fulfilling prophecy. Some of the critics of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac say that the problem is that the Federal Government is obligated to bail out people who might lose money in connection with them. I do not believe that we have any such obligation. And as I said, it is a self-fulfilling prophecy by some people.

Bill Ayers and a Barack Obama connection.

Chicago has a tradition for bomb makers beginning with the Haymarket affair bomb that killed 7 police officers in 1886. The bomb was thrown during a May Day rally for striking workers. There is a statue in Haymarket Square marking the place of the bombings.

A Chicago native the Unabomber is now serving a life sentence at SuperMax Federal Penitentiary in Florence Colorado for killing three people with mail bombs. The Unabomber Ted Kaczynski grew up in the Chicago area, graduated from Harvard University before getting his PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan, and then taught at U.C. at Berkley. The Unabomber received his moniker by targeting universities and airlines. Ted Kaczynski targeted professors at Northwestern University in Chicago and a United Airlines President with his bomb packages. As a radical leftist environmentalist, the fatal victims of Unabomber Ted Kaczinski included an ad executive for Exxon and a timber industry lobbyist.

Bill Ayers the domestic terrorist and Weathermen bomb maker is two years younger than Ted Kaczynski the Unabomber, but both have Chicago connections and both received degrees from the University of Michigan about the same time. Bill Ayers received an undergraduate degree in American studies and Ted Kazinski received his Phd in mathematics from the University of Michigan a year earlier than Bill Ayers undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. Not only a founder of the Weathermen Underground, Bill Ayers was a leader and organizer of the Students for Democratic Society SDS at the University of Michigan. Bill Ayers went on to get his Masters in teaching at Columbia in 1987.

Chicago Sun Times: Obama's Connection To Ayers Is A "Phony Flap". The Chicago Sun-Times wrote in an editorial, "But Ayers, it is also true to say, has since followed in the footsteps of the great Chicago social worker Jane Addams, crusading for education and juvenile justice reform. His 1997 book, A Kind and Just Parent: The Children of Juvenile Court, has been praised for exposing how Cook County's juvenile justice system all but eliminates a child's chance for redemption. Is Barack Obama consorting with a radical? Hardly. Ayers is nothing more than an aging lefty with a foolish past who is doing good. And while, yes, Obama is friendly with Ayers, it appears to be only in the way of two community activists whose circles overlap. Obama's middle name is Hussein. That doesn't make him an Islamic terrorist. He stopped wearing a flag pin. That doesn't make him unpatriotic. And he's friendly with UIC Professor William Ayers. That doesn't make him a bomb thrower. Time to move on to Phony Flap 6,537,204." [Chicago Sun-Times, 3/3/08]

Nathan Sproul was formerly the head of the Arizona Christian Coalition and executive director of the Arizona Republican Party, Sproul is often called Arizona's Karl Rove.

Sproul runs the political consulting firm Sproul and Associates, and works closely with Lee Petitions. He is 'regional president' of Voyager Learning, a private educational company focusing on literacy programming that was founded to take advantage of NCLB's over $1.0 billion in funding for the Reading First Initiative, and which has been implicated in political kick-backs to election officials. Sproul also has ownsership interests in several corporations that now run charter schools in Arizona under the Franklin tradename, busily indoctrinating children with character and civic values education (and which don't apparently teach science courses, btw) on the taxpayer's dime. Check out the website for this one: looks like junior is a Republican running for office. Desert Rat Democrat has Mr. Sproul's resume, should you wish to hire him.

In 2004, the RNC contracted with Sproul for an $8+ million voter registration drive which the RNC attempted to hide. A campaign during which it is alleged that Sproul's employees intentionally destroyed Democratic citizens' registration forms at Sproul's command. This occurred in swing states across the country - Sproul must be so proud of his ability to subvert democracy.

Sproul was behind the Nader petition drive in 2004, in attempt to siphon votes off from Kerry in Arizona, and the effort to kill Arizona's Clean Elections system by initiative. No doubt, Sproul was also involved with his bossom-budy, former Arizona Speaker, Jeff Groscost (don't you love that Dickensian name?) in the $100 million alt-fuels boondoggle. In fact, I've heard it alleged by people in the know that Sproul had a stake the company that originally developed the 'conversion' package installed to collect the tax benefit, convinced Groscost to sponsor the program, and made mad money from selling conversions before the wheels came off. Now Sproul is in bed with right-wing Gubernatorial challenger Les Munsil, and may have illegally donated services to that campaign in violation of Arizona law. Sproul is also behind the divisive and bigoted Protect Marriage Arizona initiative.

Which Univerity someoen went to and what year it was makes no difference. What his degree is in makes no difference. Who someone served with on a local community board 10 years ago does not matter. All that matters is who has a plan, who has the correct thought process, the correct temperment and the right group of advisors in place, to solve the problems we face. If any of this historical crap was so important as McCain would like us all to believe, then we should elect our presidents by having them fill out a survey. I am truly sorry that your candidate does not have the personality or the temperment, or the plan that the American people are looking for right now, but these crazy conspiracy theories are truly a waste of everyone's time. Unfortunately you don't seem to realize that (as of yesterday) 53% of the country aren't buying it. Condolences.

  • Posted By: mccainsupporter @ 10/23/2008 10:12:41 PM

Why Bill Ayers is important to this campaign?

John McCain should make the argument personal and something that the American people can identify and understand. John McCain views Bill Ayers as a founder of the Weathermen and Weather Underground and also founder of the Students for Democratic Society SDS on the campus of the University of Michigan. The University of Michigan had held the first sit-in against the war.

John McCain and the other 600 Vietnam POWs believe Bill Ayers was responsible for prolonging the war and causing them to receive extra beatings by the North Vietnamese for refusing to show their exuberance for the antiwar effort in the United States. The North Vietnamese fought even harder and refused to negotiate or return our POWs given the organized antiwar protests in the United States. All the North Vietnamese had to do was wait and domestic antiwar protests orchestrated by Bill Ayers would cause the United States to surrender.

John McCain spent five and half years as a POW and personally received extra beatings because of Bill Ayers. Barack Obama views Bill Ayers as a reformed domestic terrorist who did despicable things in the past but should be given a second chance today. For Barack Obama there was never a need to keep a distance from Bill Ayers.

Maybe if Barack Obama could have walked in the shoes of John McCain for just one day and suffered just one of the extra beatings that John McCain endured for five and a half years because of Bill Ayers and his Weathermen antiwar movement then maybe Barack Obama might appreciate a need to keep a distance from Bill Ayers.

There has been an underlying irony to McCain's continued attacks on Obama using William Ayers. Reading through McCain's positions on education, one discovers that he is a major proponent of using charter schools as a means to reform public education Guess who else is a major proponent of "rewarding good teachers" and using not-for-profit charter schools to reform public education? Yes, I suspect you may already know the answer...None other that that evil former Weatherman and radical bomber, William Ayers:

In fact, William Ayers and his brother, John, have been some of the strongest proponents of the not-for-profit charter school movement. Granted, William and John Ayers are are not supporters of for-profit charter schools run by companies like Edison Schools and others, but they do support locally-run, often teacher-led charter schools that emphasize small class sizes, teacher accountability and student performance accountability. McCain is also a proponent of "teaching virtues" in the public school classroom:

Guess who else supports the teaching of "virtues" in the classroom? Yes! William Ayers! A charter school group cited in Ayers' piece, above, Perspectives Charter Schools, uses as its guiding philosphy something called A Disciplined Life:

Perspectives was started by two Chicago Public School teachers who thought that minority and low-income students deserved a better education than they were receiving in the Chicago Public School system. Granted, charter schools are an anathema to teachers' unions and they are not a panacea. And Obama risks some blowback from teachers' unions if he mentions that part of the work of the Annenberg Challenge (where his relationship with Ayers began) was funding these not-for-profit community schools and charter schools. (Note: Illinois authorized the first charter school in 1996.)

But it terribly ironic that McCain, in large part, agrees with William Ayers on ways to reform public education in America. Unless McCain performs yet another flip-flop, he and Bill Ayers are soulmates.

OK Icyeyes, since everyone seems to care so much about the character attacks as you say, why have all the polls since McCain started attacking, show his tactics as negatively affecting his campaign? If everyone was eating it up, it would be working for him, but it's not. To your point about Mr McCain's history, I completely agree that he showed bravery and courage in his time as a POW, but I also think that it is a horrible mistake to think that simply because someone was a prisoner of war and a member of the military that they are somehow qualified to be president, or congressman for that matter. I am not attacking Mr. McCain's character or being bitter or divisive by saying, that I respectfully disagree that he is a better candidate for those reasons. What I look for in a candidate is a plan to accomplish the goals that the country requires to be met. In the present election, that is fixing the economy, and righting the mess that Bush's foreign policy has created for us all. I have not Heard John McCain talk about any of that for the past several weeks.

And again what was Frank saying at roughly the time McCains attempt at S.190. to fix Fannie and Freddie.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MGT_cSi7Rs

"These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis, the more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing."

So who really is the liar that soaked the American people?

I really wish people would leave other's personal lives alone. This man is not running for any position anywhere. He is just a regular guy. So he's behind on his taxes and has a fine for traffic violations. Does that change is right to his opinion? There are a lot of people behind on taxes, especially with tough times. Just because things are even harder now doesn't mean that this guy could have been on hard times then. A lot of people have traffic violations. Let those without sin cast the first stone. If you're going to be so petty about it maybe you should look into Obama's past. He used drugs and admitted it. I hope you never fall on hard times because it is only a paycheck away for most people!!

  • Posted By: RaeofSun @ 10/23/2008 8:20:44 PM

Back on topic? Any ideas what the point is of a $6mil ad at this point in the game? Is Obama going to say anything different than he's been? Doubt it. Will McCain's camp find some point in his 30 minute diatribe to exploit? Count on it.

Either way, the whole affair just seems strange to me. It's annoying enough when the actual president comes on air during my beloved prime time (yes, sad American I am), but a presidential hopeful playing what amounts to only a 30 minute infomercial seems...ludicrous. And I am for Obama at this point.

Obama's campaign has the rep for being one of the smartest in political history. I suspect there is a plan for this TV show. I can't imagine he will do or say anything to shake your confidence in him. I think Obama is loath to become complacent -- to assume that he's winning just because he's got good poll numbers. So, he's making one last appeal. He has the money. What if he chose not to spend it and he lost? Wouldn't he always wonder if one more TV appearance would have made the difference? Is there any other way to reach the whole country? When Adlai Stephenson (1952) televised his half-hour campaign talks, everyone was pretty much stuck with watching (or turning off the TV and going to bed). But these are the days of cable, direct TV, pay-per-view, HBO, etc. If you don't want to watch, there are alternates galore for your prime time viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

There seem to be a lot of "undecideds" at this point and the possibility of a Hail-Mary from McCain. The 30min campaign ad may be one way of helping the undecideds choose Obama and/or to attempt to neutralize the continued Rovian fear-and-smear tactics.

When people show up in record #'s to vote Obama into office it will be to show that the American people are fed up with not only the disgusting habits of the current administration, but the poor ideas and direction of the GOP overall. It's not just about Wall ST, it's about how every decision made by the White House and the GOP Congress (for most of the past 8 years) has completely derailed a proud country. No more war, no more greed.

It's time to retun this country ten years ago, when hollywood was making movies about asteroids because we had to make up thing to be afraid of, life was too good. A time when the worst thing our president could be accused of was cheating on his wife. Bad, yes, but it doesn't hold a candle to the murderous policies and overwhemling greed of Cheney and Bush that have made us ALL pay.

Are YOU better off now that you were several years ago?

stevenroy LMAOOOOOOO or should I say Obama? NY for years has been a democratic state. We pay one of the highest taxes in the state, on Long Island we have little big business; small businesses closing or leaving the state; people leaving because they can't afford to live here; and Nassau County had 114% foreclosure increase. NY has gone down more and more each year. How can you sit there and think your Obama isn't going to "redistribute" the pain to the rest of the Country if Gpd forbid we get stuck with him and a democrat controlled Congress?

It's not Obama that worries me, it's him as Pelosi, Reed, Kennedy and Frank's puppet. A Dem congress and a Dem Pres is like 2 gas pedals and no brake!

So let me make it clear, I am a strong supporter of the role that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac play in housing, but nobody who invests in them should come looking to me for a nickel--nor anybody else in the Federal Government. And if investors take some comfort and want to lend them a little money and less interest rates, because they like this set of affiliations, good, because housing will benefit. But there is no guarantee, there is no explicit guarantee, there is no implicit guarantee, there is no wink-and-nod guarantee. Invest, and you are on your own.
Now, we have got a system that I think has worked very well to help housing. The high cost of housing is one of the great social bombs of this country. I would rank it second to the inadequacy of our health delivery system as a problem that afflicts many, many Americans. We have gotten recent reports about the difficulty here.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have played a very useful role in helping make housing more affordable, both in general through leveraging the mortgage market, and in particular, they have a mission that this Congress has given them in return for some of the arrangements which are of some benefit to them to focus on affordable housing, and that is what I am concerned about here. I believe that we, as the Federal Government, have probably done too little rather than too much to push them to meet the goals of affordable housing and to set reasonable goals. I worry frankly that there is a tension here.
The more people, in my judgment, exaggerate a threat of safety and soundness, the more people conjure up the possibility of serious financial losses to the Treasury, which I do not see. I think we see entities that are fundamentally sound financially and withstand some of the disastrous scenarios. And even if there were a problem, the Federal Government doesn't bail them out. But the more pressure there is there, then the less I think we see in terms of affordable housing.

Share Print CommentsJohn McCain's campaign has directed $175,000 to the firm of a Republican operative accused of massive voter registration fraud in several states.

According to campaign finance records, a joint committee of the McCain-Palin campaign, the RNC and the the California Republican Party, made a $175,000 payment to the group Lincoln Strategy in June for purposes of "registering voters." The managing partner of that firm is Nathan Sproul, a renowned GOP operative who has been investigated on multiple occasions for suppressing Democratic voter turnout, throwing away registration forms and even spearheading efforts to get Ralph Nader on ballots to hinder the Democratic ticket.

In a letter to the Justice Department last October, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers said that that Sproul's alleged activities "clearly suppress votes and violate the law."

That Sproul would come under the employment umbrella of the McCain campaign -- the Republican National Committee has also separately paid Lincoln Strategy at least $37,000 for voter registration efforts this cycle -- is not terribly surprising. Sproul, who has donated nearly $30,000 to McCain's campaign, has been in the good graces of GOP officials for the past decade despite charges of ethical and potentially legal wrongdoing.

But his involvement with the Republican Party's voter registration efforts has the potential to create a political and public relations headache at a time when McCain can ill-afford one. For weeks the Arizona Republican and his allies have been seeking to tie Barack Obama to the community organization ACORN, which they have accused of potentially committing massive voter registration fraud. Sproul's contract with the GOP ticket -- in addition to news of Republican officials attempting to suppress Democratic turnout in California -- raises, for some, questions about McCain's own efforts.
