No bridge but $150,000 for clothes!? That's dispicable no matter what the rationale of the Governor - I so very much enjoyed your honest, down-to-earth commentary. I've heard great thins about Ketchikan from my family & travel clients. I wish you good luck in getting your bridge to the airport. Too cold to swim and probably no place to tie a boat if you rowed over there, huh? klfloyd

I am glad to finally hear the whole story about this bridge.I feel sorry for the people in that area, they are Alaskan citizens.Isn't Gov Palin supposed to be representing them, doesn't she work for the citizens of Alaska? Why is she making a laughing stock out of them? It sounds like the people of that town feel the bridge is important, why didn't Gov. Palin help them get the bridge? What kind of representation is that?

Just so you know, not everyone in Ketchikan wanted that Bridge - in fact it had been voted down in the past if I remember right.

    Mayor Dave Kiffer,
I am from the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. In the early 70s we moved to Reading, PA. Oddly enough there we had a, ???Road to Nowhere???. I don???t know what it is but it too was supposed to connect to the Reading Airport. I don???t know when bit years later they finally finished the last connection.
I know you can use politicks to turn anything your way, only if you get to it first. The thing that happened here was Gov. Palin approved it then denied it. If she would have accepted it and explained it the way you did everyone in every state could have found a, ???Nowhere???, project. I believe you will get your bridge sooner or later. I hope you do. Being in politicks just remember it is usually what you say first that is going to stick with you. Just remember your reasons. If they are good they will servive.

the truth of our world, a place so big as alaska is not very often taken care off. I must say I'm not alaskan nor american, but lived in AK as a exchange student and I like to say I became part of the whole precious and wonderful alaska. for those over 300.000.000 people in the usa might not care, but just a small and simple hard working community as ketchikan should remind us that every one has needs, for this town is just a bridge, I'm sure that with all the money the usa has even with economy problems a solutions for those people its not an impossible. That town doesnt need promises, it needs facts to make things possible and it seems like Sarah is doing a fine job, just hope things better better for you Ketchikan and finally get the bridge that you deserve.

      What's wrong with a ferry?

  • Posted By: CR46 @ 10/25/2008 9:48:03 PM

Maybe Alaska could use the money they kept and bridge "the bridge to nowhere" Alaska received the funds, Palin just spent it elsewhere so quit whining. Or ask your Governor Palin where the money is!!!!!!!!1

    • Posted By: xnavyproud @ 10/25/2008 11:29:52 PM

You should see all of the earmarks for colleges and universities. Money spent with no chance of the citizens to ever reach a benefit out of it. Just something to pay the Marxist professors during their summer vacation.

I really enjoyed reading your article Dave. I have been wondering how the people of Ketchikan felt about being from "nowhere". I thought it odd that Sarah Palin would make fun of a town (and citizens) in her own state. She really enjoys ragging on people doesn't she? I have been to AK a few times to work, visit family, etc. but I actually reside outside the dreaded Washington, DC. Talk about being the brunt of negative jokes!! Good luck with the bridge. It sounds like it would serve plenty of people to justify it. Since your state contributes so much in natural resources to this country, I think it's very little to ask.

    • Posted By: KayJay @ 10/25/2008 11:26:22 PM

You know....I don't think NOWHERE refered to Ketchikan as much as it referred to Gravina Island - where the former Governor and big bridge supporter owned property!

  • Posted By: Gooty @ 10/25/2008 11:26:20 PM

That should be examined and verified ,I think !

It seems sad to me that while many americans speak of wanting, needing, and seeking more job opportunities in small towns, they are unable to follow through with such simple requests that would help make this happen. How sad that our country has not learned from it's mistakes with the native americans, and have once again broken promises and just railed over a community and done what THEY wanted to without any regard for the promise made. I pray that this small town get what was promised them 30 years, A bridge to connect, grow, and develop a stronger community in America.

Well as a tourist from Australia, visiting Alaska's many towns including Ketchikan (actually twice) in 2006 I can fully understand and apreciate the need for a bridge to the airport. Sitka has a bridge and to my limited knowledge it would be smaller than Ketchikan!

When you arrive at Ketchikan at night as we did (came there from Seattle) the last thing you need to have to deal with is arranging for a ferry trip across the water to the main land. Doesn't make any sense at all. Hey, come on it is America! Sarah, make it happen! There is no better oportunity than now!
I fully support the construction of a bridge...just seems so elementry that I cant understand what is up with the Federal Government. Just do it!!

Well...it sounds like Sarah was going to make it happen, got some money for the project, then when it became politically unpopular for her, she promptly said no thanks and then started taking credit for stopping the bridge. So...Sarah pretty much works for Sarah.

  • Posted By: jlperk @ 10/25/2008 11:13:07 PM

Eastcoatgirl? It figures! Lets talk about somthing really more important than our economy or the safty of our country. How abaout a bridge? Yea thats it. And let's bash Sarah Palin at the same time.DUH!!!!!!!

    • Posted By: eastcoastgirl @ 10/25/2008 11:23:04 PM

If you read Newsweek you would see that there are plenty of articles on those very important issues. There is also plenty of room in this media saturated country for a little human interest story. I think you are just agitating. You really can't be seriously giving this small town mayor a hard time for advocating for his town. Don't be so quick to diss the east coast by the way. This is where it all started (remember Plymouth Rock, the revolution, the civil war, etc.). I was born out west and have been to most of the states including AK. It's all great but the bigotry is really dragging us down!!!!!!!

Why don't you ask Palin for the $230,000,000 she received from Congress. to help build your non-bridge.

Even though she claims to have said to Congress, "Thanks, but no thanks to the Bridge to Nowhere", she still kept the money...

      Liberal crap.

    • Posted By: LauraICURN @ 10/25/2008 9:21:17 PM

Wow...so I was WAY off on my 55 million dollar question...it was actually 230 million that was given to Alaska and kept without the bridge being built? Well...Ketchikan...while I truly feel for you and your plight...perhaps you should look into where this money went and then build your much needed bridge...best of luck to you!

An example of what is really wrong with our government, simplistic sound bite mentality instead of an accurate portrayal of the facts.

What? No comment on the viability of our press. Whatever happened to fair and balanced objective reporting?

  • Posted By: kbuck967 @ 10/25/2008 6:00:35 PM

All I can say is, a lot of GOOD HAS come from ALASKA. Look at all the resources we have to offer, and how much the United States has benifitted over the years. It was the Pribilof Islands that paid for the State of Alaska, all because of the Northern Fur Seal. The Federal coffers stuffed full with the proceeds from that era. So Mayor Kiffer, keep the pressure on for that new bridge!

The other side of the story? Obama sits under a clergy openly bashing America and all it stands for and he says" I never heard him say things like that". For 20 years.?C mon. I was born at night but not last night. He is a great speaker and a great liar!!!!!!!!!

  • Posted By: abbankhead @ 10/25/2008 8:55:41 PM

Ok so Palin had clothes for the campaign but why did the family have to have new clothes? What happened to cutting funds when you can $150,000.00 is more than my house and many others that are military families that are in foreclosure or filing for bankrupcy. I am school teacher, special education to be exact, and I will never make that much in a teaching year. And as for her knowing alot about special ed services for families with special needs children, she is using her child to make brownie points with parents with special needs children. Their lives are not to be played with campaign promises she knows can not be met or made light of. I love my students about as much as their parents do. I have taught pre-k through 12 grade and their are parents that exploit their kids to make a buck and I see this in Palin. What next... a promise to nowhere for special ed parents?

Why don't you ask some of your "share the wealth" buddies for the money? Cuba, Venezuela, or some other socialists/communists should be willing to share their wealth.

      Hey Wolfman,
You've got a point there, Obama and his buddies can "spread the wealth" for projects in all 57 states!! LOL

Ignorance is not bliss so please don't post something that you know nothing about. Leaving Ketchikan takes a lot of money, both ways. The ferry to the airport costs money (both ways) as well as the Alaska Marine Highway ferry. Until you live in Alaska, pay Alaska???s rates and make Alaska rates, you don't get to tell us what to do. We never once demanded to have a bridge, we didn???t even complain that the bridge was shot down. It seems those with the most opinions about this ???Bridge to nowhere??? are those of you who don???t live here. We aren???t ???nowhere??? and we aren???t ???nobody???s???. We are the residents that live in Ketchikan Alaska. Since this whole ???Bridge to Nowhere??? started I???ve seen the population escalate from 5,500 to 14,000. There are more residents living year round in Ketchikan than the 14,000 posted. Until the majority of you that have negative comments about our "Bridge to Nowhere" have lived in Ketchikan for a year, none of you have a right to call us Nowhere. We are open to alternatives to the bridge but negative comments about our community are not needed. We are the residents of Ketchikan, Alaska.
