Hopefully the American People will see that Ketchikan needs a bridge like many other cities that have a waterway and the city needs to connect parts of the city for easy access.
I wish that the politicians would concentrate on the issues that affect the American people rather than cutting each other down. Also the President can't change things alone...it takes Congress too. We need someone in the White House who has experience and common sense and looks at the whole picture. Mr. Obama does not look at the whole picture and lacks experience in many different areas...it's like putting a high school student in charge of big corporation with no experience. Personally I have lived in Hawaii and know that it is the most socialistic and bureaucratic and prejudice place to live. Socialistic medicine does not work because it doesn't give the benefit of obtaining the best treatments available...ask a Canadian or Engishmen. I would hope the American People will look at not what they can get from the government but what can we do to have less government in our lives. More government the less individual control we have of our lives. I, for one, want to see a stronger America that encourages entreprenuership, free enterprise and not classes (elite and poor). Socialism comes in the back door....Remember the frog that is put in warm water and the heat is gradually turned up and frog is cooked. We don't want be like the frog and wonder what happen to the free America we all desire. God Bless America and pray that its People have common sense. Tutu

You missed the biggest need the bridge would address: The land on the other side. He said they are the 4th largest population in Alaska. Without the bridge, they can't build, they can't offer more services to people who pass through, they can't grow their tourism industry, and they can't grow past 14,000. The bridge would be an investment in the future and I think it would be well worth it. Palin did no favor to the Alaskan people by throwing Ketchikan under the bus.

Only someone that does not pay any taxes would think that each community pays for its own infrastructure improvements. Chances are if allantal ever flew in an airplane, traveled over a bridge, flused a toilet or took a drink of clean fresh water he did so at the taxpayers expense.

Posted By: patchthepirate @ 10/25/2008 10:16:38 PM "Comment: Only someone that does not pay any taxes would think that each community pays for its own infrastructure improvements." -- Depends on one's definition of "taxpayer". States are supposed to build THEIR OWN infrastructure not the Federal government. Read the Constitution and figure out what our forefathers laid out for us. STOP THE SOCIALISM!

It is still a Bridge to Nowhere. Look at all the aging bridges and road infrastructure we have elsewhere in the country. There are hundreds of bridges in need of rehabs or replacement, that are servicing 100's of Millions of commuters yearly in this country. And yet this mayor thinks it's important we spend huge piles of taxpayer money for a pitiful community of 14,000. I want my tax money spent on the major bridges and roads that support the major aspects of the US economy, not some rinky-dink area out where the Caribou outnumber to people.

Thanks for giving another side to this story. I particularly like your line that no matter what happens in two weeks on Nov. 4, we will forgive her. Live and let live; we are all in this together. Good luck with the bridge; it does sound like you could use it.

If a bridge is necessary, find a funding institution to issue a revenue bond. Give investors an opportunity to fund the bridge, and in exchange let those investors have a stake in the bridge and allow them to profit from it. If a bond is unpalatable, increase airport user fees and passenger facility charges to fund the road...that way the burden for funding the bridge falls solely on those who would utilize the airport. This is often the case when new roads are constructed to other airports around the country, or when airports are upgraded. Assuming his numbers are correct that 250,000 pass through the airport every year, a PFC increase of 2 dollars annually would yield $500K in 1 year, PFC increase of $4 would yield 1 million in a year, and so on. This could be used to repay bond investors or to fund the construction. This could be further increased by adding a 1 dollar increase to the port charges on the 1 million visitors who come on cruise ships. Don't burden every taxpayer in the U.S. for something thatt will not benefit all of us. Give investors a chance, or limit the expense to those who would use the facilities. As an example, I am from Memphis, TN... We were in major need of a new airport terminal. We did not expect every taxpayer to fund that....the port authority issued bonds and is in the process of repaying them with income from higher PFC charges. At the same time, as a bondowner, I am able to profit from it, and the burden for funding the improvements lied squarely on users of the airport, not the Memphis or Tennessee taxpayer or federal taxpayer.

vickym - totally agree! No disrespect intended to 99% of Alaskans, but if you have enough $$$ to give every resident a check, spend it on the bridge instead if it's that important for the state. I'm also guessing, 99% of Alaskans are self-sufficient and don't want the government's help and want less...not more...government in their lives.

  • Posted By: vickym @ 10/25/2008 10:23:37 PM

Each state gets funding from the federal government through the US Department of Transportation for highways and bridges. The federal funds can be as high as 75% matched with state funds at 25%. Earmarks are funded at 100% of federal funds. Since Republicans claim to want less federal government, I would expect your preferred method is through annual transportation funding. Since each Alaskan citizen gets a check from your state governments for your oil reserves, I suggest you take than money instead and spend it on your bridge.

Reviewing the Mayors comments about "the bridge" I wonder about cruise ship and float plane traffic during the many years it will take to construct a bridge. Are the cruise ships going to bypass Ketchikan after $$$ has been spent to redo the port area? I know Tongass Narrows is very deep, over 400' I've been told. This will be no small or inexpensive task. On the few visits I've made to Ketchikan, I've been amazed at how busy Tongass Narrows is. What's the plan? Is the bridge to be tall enough for cruise ships to clear? Will that create a hazard to aviation. It seems to me, more ferrys would be cheaper and less disruptive.

  • Posted By: bdilenge @ 10/25/2008 10:10:47 PM

I've been to Ketchikan a few times. I assume the bridge is to be built acrosss Tongass Narrows. What happens to the cruise ships the Mayor men tioned when they arrive from the North or South? Will they go around Gravina to arrive at the port? Or willt hey simply bypass Ketchikan as it is a long ways around Gravina. Also what about the float plane traffic? Tongass Narrows is a very busy place in the summer, I think building a bridge is much less feasible than adding ferries.

As republican all my life, I am deeply ashamed, we have turned into a party of racists and morons.

    • Posted By: eightstarsofgold @ 10/25/2008 10:09:04 PM

Todd Nadrich - as a lifelong Republican you will probably remain a Republican despite the horrible campaign tactics this year. Let your party know you are unhappy! I'm a Democrat who believes in the two party system - but after this year I'd be happy if the Republican party never recovered and just dropped off the planet. These tactics will continue as long as registered Republican allow the top party officials to get away with it -- or until the Republicans lose enough elections. I'm a former Alaskan but now live in Washington state. I wasn't around when Governor Palin was elected, but frankly, I'm ashamed today she's representing Alaska in any capacity.

Thank you for finally being humane enough to admit the wrongs of your party. Racism is not a policy, nor is there a place for it in America or in the leaders of our country. Again, you should be commended for apology on behalf of so many that have shown that ignorance, hate, and racism is alive and well in all of America, not just the so called "real America" of the small towns McStupid/Failin speak of.

      • Posted By: Mad_Taxpayer @ 10/25/2008 10:08:54 PM

Racism is bad but name calling is alright? hhmmmm....

    • Posted By: Ex ACS @ 10/25/2008 8:14:29 PM

Todd nadrick if you are apologizing for being a racist and moron, then we accept your apology, but you don't need to transfer your sins to the Republican party. Just speak for yourself.

A town of 14,000 in Alaska wants a bridge to an airport in the middle of nowhere? I think with the current economic mess there are more important places to put government money. If its so important to your state use your oil/NG revenue instead of my tax $$.

    • Posted By: Ketchikan_Patrick @ 10/25/2008 7:56:15 PM

I recommend you take your own advice Mad-Taxpayer! I believe your State shoudl refund my tax dollars that I paid to build your roads and bridges! How stupid is this argument?

      • Posted By: Mad_Taxpayer @ 10/25/2008 9:54:20 PM

LOL. My state got $400 million for the entire year for roadways and bridge repair and you want $400 million for a bridge to an airport for a town of 14,000 and my argument is stupid? I also don't remember complaining about your roadwork or anyone else's. Just the bridge.

  • Posted By: nytengail1 @ 10/25/2008 9:50:22 PM

Mayor Kiffer you make me proud to be a fellow Alaskan! Good luck with your bridge. For all you in the lower48.... We also pay the federal gas tax. The very tax that is suppose to help pay for roads and bridges. Texas is also a oil state yet they just received 679 million for their road systems. Spreading the wealth around??? Are you kidding me? Here in Alaska we are Americans NOT Socialist!

Interstate 5 is a mess itn the Portland, Oregon area especially the bridge across the Columbia River. This is the west coast life line highway and can,t get off the dime or get a dime from the feds to build it. So far the POLITICIANS AND BEAURACRATS have wasted 50 MILLION in bull sessions and arguing but NO BRIDGE. This road actually goes some where.

When you travel I-5, California is so bad and Oregon and Washington are so smooth. I just bought a '76 Tiumph Spitfire in southern California trailered it back, and I have to tell you, I-5 in California is horrible.

Try getting to JFK @ 5pm, or even O'hare in the winter time....sounds like a bunch of whiners....

    • Posted By: Ketchikan_Patrick @ 10/25/2008 8:03:58 PM

Your comment is applicable only if you add a $5 toll each direction to get to and from JFK. I have driven to JFK countless times and I have waited for the ferry here. The time is the same but we get to pay for the privilege of not having a bridge.

      • Posted By: akresident @ 10/25/2008 9:45:16 PM

don't forget if your car breaks down on the way to JFK, OHare or any other airport down south where there is a bridge that you are not at the mercy of the Tongass Narrows with it 8-14 knot current where in the minutes it takes to get a rescue boat to you that you have been swept down the narrows toward ward cove or even as far as mud bight, or the fact that even if the planes are flying in bad weather the ferry may not be running due to the seas coming over the bow of the ferry or the fact that when you say ferry most people are not thinking of the airporrt ferry but are thinking of something more on the lines of the state ferry or the statten island ferry not the 40 foot shallow draft low decked sad little excuse of a ferry that runs across the narrows every 30 minute barring some sort of hiccup in the system that could cause delays and ultimately the missing of your flight.and not to mention the fact that there is only one backup ferry that they then have to warm up and inspect before they can move it plus your ferry has to be moved from the landing since there is only one ferry dock capable of car landings

In Alaska, you often see people shopping at Market Basket in bathrobe and slippers. People in restaurants dressed in long-handled underwear. Or peeing in public because the ice fog generated doesn't allow anyone to see anything anyway. I love Alaska and it's people. Very few small minds.

  • Posted By: ShelbyAK @ 10/25/2008 9:25:40 PM

I live in Juneau, Alaska and have flown into Ketchikan many times with students going to play basketball games, music festivals etc. They need this bridge. I need this bridge. It isn't a bridge to nowhere but to their airport.

    • Posted By: not this time @ 10/25/2008 9:32:31 PM

HEY YOU NEW YORK IDIOT, SOLVE YOUR OWN PROBLEMS. STAY OUT OF ALASKA

  • Posted By: bgerard2 @ 10/25/2008 9:29:04 PM

First of all to the cretin that is speculating on Sarah Palin and her family including her child who has Downs Syndrome, why don't you worry about the dirt in YOUR OWN closet? Stick a sock in your mouth and spare us your gross ignorance. Second - It isn't the responsibility of the taxpayers in the rest of the United States to pay for your bloody bridge or airport! It's time for the socialist programs and government control to end!

  • Posted By: drgregory @ 10/25/2008 9:11:46 PM

I am not sure if the bridge to nowhere will ever be built, but I do know that bridges are essential to development. The United States would be a far cry from what it is today if all the other states had to foot the bill for their own bridges.
