Thanks for telling us the truth about the proposed bridge to Ketchikan. Politicians who distort the truth just to advance their careers should be exposed by the national media. Any time a politician tells the truth they are viciously attacked and their comments are distorted.

Bravo! But, I don't know what "stanch" means. Is it a contraction of "stanchion"? Can it be Alaskan slang?

    • Posted By: xnavyproud @ 10/25/2008 9:11:01 PM

Stanch means to stop the flow of a liquid. As in stop the flow of blood.

Sorry ???Joe from Ketchikan???. What it all boils down to is that ferries and ships are more than adequate for a town such as yours; and if you need a bridge that bad ask Alaska to foot the bill. After all it was their blunder in the first place.

    • Posted By: starofcyan @ 10/25/2008 9:05:57 PM

Actually... the it was federal money that built our airport, and if they built it, they might as well aid us to get there!! We have to pay $5.00 each way by lugging our luggage on and off a ferry, (where it rains over 200 inches a year and has winds up to 70 knots), and if you miss that ferry, well you might just miss your flight!! If you drive on..it's over $20 bucks. It's a joke.

Before citizens of Alaska start complaining about a bridge you indicate is needed to get to an airport but tentatively labeled the bridge to nowhere you should consider yourselves lucky that you are all recipients of a fund by the oil companies called Alaska Permanent Fund (APF) created in 1976. The first dividend check was issued in 1982 and every citizen who resided in Alaska for over a year received $1,000. Every year since then each Alaskan citizen has bee issued a check bringing the total to more than $23,000 per citizen. In 2003 the amount was $1,107 and the all time high was 2000 when the amount was $1,964. What other states reward its citizens in such a fashion? Surely not mine where I am being taxed to death, many of the roads are toll roads, local government are bloated and corrupt, and the whole infrastructure from roads, to public transportation, crime, foreclosures, and unemployment is at an all time high. I think pork projects where the rest of the nation is broken should be attended to first.

    • Posted By: xnavyproud @ 10/25/2008 7:14:11 PM

There are no toll roads in Alaska.

      • Posted By: akresident @ 10/25/2008 9:00:38 PM

The rest of the nation includes Alaska , if we were all as short sighted as you we would keep all of the oil in alaska refine it and drive on $ .75 gas and even cheaper diesel. Maybe what we should do is charge an additional tax on all of the seafood we ship to the lower 48 and see how you enjoy 50 dollar a pound salmon and halibut . red lobsters all you can eat snow crab @ 200 dollars a plate let alone king crab the price of beluga caviar.

I have comments to make to people who never knew, maybe because they didn't pay attention in class, that ALASKA is part of the United States. Wow. It's the 49th STATE, not some separate entitity from the rest of you. We live up here far away from the rest of you, but we still are entitled to the same considerations as the rest of you people down there in the Lower 48. Here's a newsflash for you. Hundreds of thousands of you tourists don't mind steaming up here on the cruise ships, hopping on a bus and stomping down the streets of these places like Ketchikan and making it ridiculously hard for those of us who live here in Alaska to even walk down our sidewalks that FEDERAL tax dollars did not build. You don't mind flying into our airports and making it difficult for the residents to get their opportunity to book a flight out because we have limited flights in here every day. No, you want to come here litter our streets and then move on back down to the slum of the Lower 48 and complain if we need a bridge or something up here. Face it, you didn't even know we existed other than to tour, until Sarah Palin came along. No, I'm not a fan of Palin's, but I am a fan of my state. To the person who didn't want their tax dollars spent on a bridge in Ketchikan, maybe WE up here don't want our tax dollars spent on your roadways either. We don't have a big conniption about that, and maybe WE don't want you Wall Streeters bailed out either with OUR tax dollars. And just maybe next time you go to start your engines, be aware that OUR OIL in Alaska is probably in your tank. If you don't like us, don't come here. But do NOT pretend to know anything about this state unless you educate yourself, and you can start by learning that we are the 49th State in the United States. We have a saying up here: "If it's tourist SEASON, does that mean it's legal to kill them?"

    • Posted By: tennessean @ 10/25/2008 8:56:27 PM

Gee, Debbie, didn't know tourists that bring $$$ to spend to your state were such a hardship. Visited your state a few years ago, loved it, and learned a lot about it. Was thinking about coming back for another visit. But, now I'm afraid I'll run into you with the very large chip on your shoulder. Get a grip. The tourist trade brings MILLIONS of dollars to your great state every year. Hopefully, you are not employed in the tourist trade.

It is not YOUR OIL. It is OUR OIL. It is pumped from beneath OUR LAND which as another poster stated is 97% federally owned. ALL of ALASKA was bought and paid for by AMERICANS with AMERICAN dollars long before the State, or Territory, of Alaska ever existed. YOU should be grateful WE are not charging YOU rent or charging YOU for the trees YOU cut from OUR land or the fish and game produced on OUR land.

      • Posted By: xnavyproud @ 10/25/2008 8:54:36 PM

Are you kidding? If we wanted to cut trees in Alaska, we paid for a permit and paid per the Scribner Scale for each tree. Also, we had to grub the stumps up and get rid of the slash. When we were done logging an area, it looked like a park. If we wanted to fish, we paid for a fishing license. If we wanted to hunt, we paid for a hunting license. If we wanted to use shist for a driveway, we had to get a permit and pay for it by the volume. If we wanted a subsistance license to dip net at Chitina we had to pay for that, unless we had very low income.

I am sorry that you had to react to a bunch of ignorant people who do not see the truth. I would love to see Alaska and would not treat it like it was a piece of garbage. It is beautiful country and I am sure that some of those people that spoke with disrespect of Alaska, lived in a country that was not free would learn to keep their mouths shut before putting foot into mouth.

Give the town their bridge. They are entitled to the same opportunity to adapt and survive as any other American town.It will be a two edge sword however;living right next to a busy, loud and invasive airport stinks from a quality of life perspective. My family and I used to live in'affordable' housing next to Eagle airport near Vail, Colorado. The busier the airport got the worse our quality of life became. So we moved away.

  • Posted By: esaak999 @ 10/25/2008 8:52:58 PM

I'm sure if alot of other places never gotten a bridge, they would never have gorwned into the City that they are Now. Alaska is one of the Largest State in the Nation, We have alot of Land but our Populations is one of the lowest. Bridges are needed all over southeastern Alaska., It is alfter all, Made up of hundered if not thousands of Islands.

  • Posted By: jrbj999 @ 10/25/2008 8:49:08 PM

I used to live in Ketchikan, about 20 years ago. Sadly, I was forced for economic reasons to move back to the lower 48. I know about the need for a bridge to the airport. Right now they are forced to use a ferry, with limited capacity, to make the trip back and forth. I understand, also, that the city wants to be able to use Gravina Island to grow and create more jobs and more revenue. But, in doing so, that really threatens the uniqueness of what makes Ketchikan, Ketchikan. In any event, I wish all there well and my heart is there if not the rest of me.

  • Posted By: oldsergeant @ 10/25/2008 8:48:24 PM

I lived in Anchorgae for over ten years....I heard stories of the "bridge to nowhere". Now it has become a political joke. I for one hope some day that bridge will be built, the people of Ketchikan deserve it!!!!

The top 6 states to get earmarks for fiscal year 2008 to date are: #1 California 554 earmarks for $ 460,667,000,000; #2 Texas 299 earmarks for $ 344,137,000,000; #3 Pennsylvania 445 earmarks for $ 343,273,000,000; #3 New York 381 earmarks for $ 201,370,000,000; #5 Illinois 252 earmarks for $ 286,470,000,000. The candidates' states: Senator Obama #5 Illinois; Govenor Palin Alaska 119 earmarks for $ 154,865,000,000; Senator Biden, Deleware 45 earmarks for $ 37,287,000,000; and Senator McCain, Arizona 72 earmarks for $ 65,616,000,000. There are still 4501 earmarks for $ 9,367,573,000 still pending for 2008. These figures do not include earmarks shared among multiple states.

    • Posted By: nbctjon @ 10/25/2008 8:37:50 PM

California has 30 times as many taxpayers as Alaska, how about some numbers that actually mean something like earmark dollars per taxpayer(Alaska #1) and Federal Tax dollars returned to states versus actual Federal Tax paid(Alaska #1).

So, a town of 14,000 needs a $400,000,000.00 bridge? With that amount of money every citizen in Ketch could ride the ferry to the airport every day for fifteen years. Perhaps We The People should pass on this one.

    • Posted By: Glassgow1 @ 10/25/2008 8:37:38 PM

You ride a ferry everytime you want to go to the airport and let's see how sympathetic you become.

  • Posted By: puch @ 10/25/2008 7:28:27 PM

I have been to Ketchikan a few times and find the people living there great and friendly. ( Does it always rain there?)
About the bridge, if my town wants something, there is a ballot measure vote for a bond, raise the sales or house tax . The folks in Alaska don???t pay any sales or state tax as we do down here, they are a lot better off as we are. So why don???t they establish a sales tax in Ketchikan to pay for the bridge? Or take some of the few thousands $ of oil dividend all Alaskans get paid out every year. I can???t see why we lower states tax payers have to fund the bridge.

    • Posted By: akresident @ 10/25/2008 8:33:56 PM

you have obviously never been to ketchikan if you think they don't have sales tax or are just one of those who never bought anything there

I visited this beautiful city last year on a cruise to 4 of the Alaska cities on the way from Anchorage to Vancouver. The people in this area have to take a ferry or other transportation to get to the airport since the feds built the airport on a seperate island and never built a bridge. We can argue over how much and how great the bridge should be but let's give them a bridge. If this was New York or DC we would not be talking about it.

  • Posted By: Glassgow1 @ 10/25/2008 8:32:48 PM

This is just another amazing spin on the truth for politacal agendas. I believe this man. It is unbelieveable the way the media jumps onboard for a story with complete disregard for investigating the truth. How very sad for this town and the surrounding community. Someone should make a stand for the truth besides the people directly affected by the lies. This goes to show how man has ruled mankind to his injury. When will it end?

  • Posted By: chaara @ 10/25/2008 8:19:02 PM

    So, a community of 14,000 needs a $400,000,000.00 bridge?

    • Posted By: Parkieboy @ 10/25/2008 8:32:05 PM

The community, the tourists, the tourism industry and the location warrant a bridge. Extreme weather conditions and what sounds like shipping concerns seem to demand a special application here. Not being a civil or structural engineer, I can't speculate on the cost, but last time I checked, bridges weren't cheap.. Let's just not rush to judgement without being willing to look at the whole picture.

OK, I lived in Ketchikan, Alaska from 1989 to 2004 when I retired from the Alaska State Ferry System. Yes, it's inconvient to take a ferry across the narrows to town, but spendin $350 MILLION of taxpayers across the country isn't in the public interest either.
Mr. Mayor, you say that 250,000 passengers pass through the airport, and 1 million more visit on cruise ship each year. If you charged each cruise ship passenger a buck or two, and a small surcharge for each airport passenger, Ketchikan could have paid for the bridge themselves.
Another solution is to take a couple hundred million out of the BILLIONS in the Alaska Permanent fund and the State of Alaska could fund it's own projects.
This year EVERY Alaskan, man woman and child got over $3,200 from the state of Alaska. Why not reduce that a couple hundred bucks and pay for some projects?
I live in Idaho now, why should my tax dollars build you that bridge?
I was an Alaska resident for 37 years. One of the things Alaska value is independence. If you want that bridge, build it yourselves! Most of the Island the airport is on is Federal land anyway.
By the way, Gov. Palin lied to the national press. She favored the bridge all along until it was cancelled by congress. She never said, "Thanks, but no thanks". The project was cancelled but she kept the money.

    • Posted By: scotchyroo @ 10/25/2008 8:31:44 PM

The mayor and the city council charge cruise ship passengers between $13 and $30 to disembark..... it's just that they don't want to spend that money on a bridge because it isn't a priority... as it has been promised by the federal government. The cruise ship money goes to the city coffers and probably funds their bubba system.

The Federal Government owns 97% of Alaska. The population is so low and the state is so large. It is very hard to live there. The rest of the nation should be paying people to live there.

Comment: To phoke @ 10/25/2008 4:37:00 PM: Why doesn't anyone question what the other candidates spend on wardrobe, hair, etc... Example: Hillary during campaigning for herself, as well as when her husband ruled the liberal kingdom. How about the china, (furniture? and who knows what else?) that disappeared from the White House when they left office? How about Mrs. Obama? Just because she showed up on The "Liberal" View in a $100 frock - you honestly think that's all she spends on herself? And she's (thank the good Lord) not even running for office. And do you honestly think Palin's daughter is the first teen child of someone in office to get knocked up or in any other kind trouble? And are you judging this family when you don't know them and your only source of info is the liberal media? It seems to me that the Palin's are being incredibly forthcoming and honest. If she wasn't keeping an eye on her now, we'd hear about that, too. And I have a feeling she probably got preg. in the back seat of a car (not the first teen) and not under the desk of the Oval Office. I wouldn't have taken issue with that incident, either, if it hadn't taken place in a place that should be thought of with respect - not yuck...If liberals can't find anything to tarnish Sarah Palin's image, they make things up or draw attention to issues that are irrelevant. She can't win for loosing.Remember what they say about when you are pointing the finger at someone else (or someone else's party)...You need to put some thought into you thoughts before spewing them out loud (or on-line).

Don't forget about all of the "W" buttons being removed from all of the keyboards. Democrat vandalism. Yellow Dog Democrats have criminal minds. When you don't believe in HELL you can do anything you like. Ethics is an abstract that doesn't apply to the rabid Yellow Dogs.

      • Posted By: mdeshof @ 10/25/2008 6:38:08 PM

But Palin's platform is to "keep government out of our lives" and end ntitlements. Yet she allowed taxpayers to pay for children's airfare and bought exceptionally expensive clothes with campaign money because she felt entitled. Do as I say but not as I do?

        • Posted By: informed.voter&mom @ 10/25/2008 8:22:07 PM

So, who pays for Michelle Obama to travel - or their children? Do they travel commercial airways? What the crap does any of it have to do with entitlement? If I'm not mistaken, S. Palin did not purchase the clothes. Who cares anyway?!

      • Posted By: Beargirl @ 10/25/2008 6:58:33 PM

to bezzer70: Coolaide, drinking liberal. I find it highly enlightening that liberals are quick to judge a teenage out of wedlock pregnancy (which they feel should have been aborted) but overlook entirely a President getting a blow job in the Oval Office on the Tax Payers dime. Amazing!!!
