Apparently none of you read my comment, I LIVE HERE, WE DO NOT NEED A BRIDGE! It's unbelievable how many of you are taking what Dave Kiffer says at face value.

    Posted By: Fed-up-In-K-Town @ 10/25/2008 3:10:44 PM:

This clown does not speak for me or anyone I know that lives here in Ketchikan. The bridge may have been a viable option 30 years ago, but that ship has sailed and the crybabies really need to get over it. There is NO GOOD REASON to build a bridge. I use the airport ferry several times a year and it works just fine. However, we could use a decent shelter for the folks that walk on, and possibly a conveyor belt to help with luggage.

"What also went unstated was our town's need for development." Oh, that's rich. It's also ridiculous considering the multitude of properties for sale on this side of the channel. We also have the property at Ward Cove, site of the former pulp mill. It's also at Ward Cove where a derelict fishing boat lies half submerged at the opening of a spawning creek. This boat slowly sank for weeks and nothing was done to stop it. Our local government does a lousy job. They want hundreds of millions of dollars for a little convenience while folks in the borough still use catchment systems for water... all the while paying too-high property taxes and traveling on broken down, DANGEROUS roads and street bridges.

"The media reports never seemed to mention that Ketchikan has a year-round population of 14,000???making it the fourth-largest community in the state." I'm going to have to call BS on this as well. Ketchikan has been dwindling since the pulp mill closed. I have lived here 15 years and I've never seen as many for-sale signs as I do now. What a joke, too bad I'm not laughing.

"It's also ridiculous considering the multitude of properties for sale on this side of the channel" Excuse me, Ketchikan presently has the fewest properties for sale in the last 8 years. There may be a lot of "for sale" signs, but the're not for the same properties. A home sells, the sign goes down, and another one comes onto the market. Ever hear of turnover?

As for rain-catchment water systems, I'd take mine over cholorinated, high-level-haloacidic municipal water any day. That doesn't mean I'm anti-development, just for responsible development.

You don't have to be a professional writer to write a good letter. Just because someone is not dressed in what to people in the "lower 48" consider to be socially acceptable for a politician does not make him any less of a politician. Alaskans take pride in having everyday people run our boroughs, cities, towns, and villiages. There is another reason why people come to Alaska... to escape the sterotypes and arrogance that goes along with the liberals. The more I hear people ranting their liberal perspectives without thinking before the speak the more I think Alaska would be better off leaving the union.

So you are one of them. The ones that were mentioned that wanted Alaska to no longer be part of the US. Well, since Russia is so close why don't you just hop on over and see how great your life can be there.

  • Posted By: Widowmaker51 @ 10/25/2008 3:22:45 PM

    To Mayor Kiffer,
I sure that you and your constituents will be able to ride this out. The "ONLY" joke to come out of Alaska in recent months was you Gov. Sarah Palin. It scares me to think that if Mc Cain were to "CROAK" she would become President OMG Just the thought of it scares the Hell outta of me

    • Posted By: DANHAAN27 @ 10/25/2008 7:29:36 PM

YOU MUST BE A REPUBLICAN, WE WANT LOWER TAXES BUT WE WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING YOU THINK YOU WANT

Ain't...nice choice of words, please, we do not need your vote...stay with your "friends" the ignorant party of McStupid/Failin they need more people like you! Oh yes and his name is Jeremiah Wright...one more thing before I go...did you know that opinions are like ***holes, everybody has one! Some are just more educated and informed than others.

By the way, the subsidy that Alaskans get is NOT a federal giveaway. That was started when the Alaska pipeline was put in as part of the deal to let them build and run it across the entire state. I don't know about the rest of you, but I get a bit tired of the oil companies and their "small" profits. Don't you wish you could get a bit of thier "meager" profits like the Alaskans do???

  • Posted By: worrisome @ 10/25/2008 7:19:30 PM

    What a bunch of Crap............

    • Posted By: RubyT @ 10/25/2008 7:26:45 PM

Witty rhetoric but lacking in facts.

  • Posted By: todd nadrich @ 10/25/2008 7:26:25 PM

Won't the bridge put the ferry workers out of business and on unemployment? I thought living in Alaska was supposed be tough and Alaskians were always willing to put up with some difficulty to be free and independent.

  • Posted By: z4t4 @ 10/25/2008 7:26:13 PM

NEWSWEEK = Soviet PRAVDA... Hey Dave Kiffer - Come you sap..Why don't you guys to an Artical how YOUR EDITORS ordered your writers NOT TO do anything Negative about OBAMA? See I have Friends too...For the benefit of the other readers here, I'll share: Seems my Firend at NEWSWEEK advised that they have been "ordered" not to post any negative about OBAMA. CHARGE THOSE 1 MILLION VISITORS WHO BRING THEIR MONEY $$$$ TO THIS TOWN OF 14,000 EACH YEAR! WOULDN'T WE ALL LIKE TO HAVE TOURISM AT THOSE PERCENTAGES? THESE PEOPLE MUST BE ROLLIN' IN THE DOUGH! LIKELY MOST OF IT IS MADE "UNDER THE TABLE." I'd love to see what kind of taxes these people in this community pay! Probably nothing!

    • Posted By: princeofwalesalaska @ 10/25/2008 7:20:46 PM

Google it. I pay federal taxes, it pays for your infrastructure too.

    • Posted By: iluvtherain @ 10/25/2008 7:15:11 PM

No taxes? I WISH - paying enough taxes in Ketchikan THANKS!

  • Posted By: Joseph Smith Jr. @ 10/25/2008 6:58:03 PM

These IDIOTS have 1 MILLION TOURSITS per YEAR, and they can't figure out how to save enough money in 30 years to build their own g d bridge!??? Sounds like a bunch of Democrats to me! (Yet, they call themselves Republicans!) OMG!

    • Posted By: Sweet Pea 1 @ 10/25/2008 7:19:49 PM

You are one PATHETIC individual. You republicans LOVE to bash democrats, when if you weren't led around by the nose with your stupid views, and would open your eyes, you MIGHT realize that democrats are not all welfare recipients! My husband worked everyday for 37 years and retired with a decent income. You republicans would love to try to stop all that wouldn't you?

From what I understand the bridge plan was to Gravina Island a distance away from the airport but very close to the land which the Mayor owned. The plan included making the bridge large enough for the cruise ships to pass under instead of a draw bridge which would have been less expensive. I have been to the Ketchikan airport and as the Ferry runs every half hour, I found it to be most convienient and a pleasant ride across to the main island. In my opinion the benefits of the bridge was far less than the astronomical cost.

  • Posted By: Needlewood_M @ 10/25/2008 7:17:47 PM

Having grown up in Alaska, and been to Ketchikan, I know what the mayor means when he says that it is a little hard to transform your economy without support. In Alaska, the majority of places are hard to get to and without the help that they have asked for, it is highly likely that their community will ever be able to meet their need to change. Why hold them hostage?? I see that the government representatives that we have elected have no problem funding the most and completely ridiculous things, but can't fund a bridge to help a small and geographically limited community provide for their future. THAT is short sighted!! (Who wants money from working people to fund their programs? hmmm?) There may be many in Alaska who look for a handout, but that is true for the ENTIRE country! I think we could probably fund requests for things to help towns grow economically if we Stopped Giving Freebies to illegal alliens....

  • Posted By: kingr @ 10/25/2008 7:16:39 PM

Kool-Aid???? The mayor dishes out Kool-Aid. It's sad that there are so many drinkers

  • Posted By: cpennington85 @ 10/25/2008 7:15:58 PM

This just makes me so angry! Here you have a community with a genuine need for development and improvement, And the Governor is all over national television bragging about how she "stopped" the bridge to nowhere. It's bull! She talks about how she thinks of small town America as "the real America". I gues Ketchikan isn't real enough for her. It really disturbs me that McCain supports this woman (and that if he wins the election, she's a skipped heartbeat way from the presidency.) How can McCain be expected to improve economic growth and prosperity in our nation, if his running mate doesn't even support it in her own state. As a matter of fact, it sounds like she is proudly against it.

  • Posted By: irenawilder @ 10/25/2008 6:54:16 PM

Bravo! Small towns have unique problems due to the small population base. But, I do not understand the word "stanch". Is this a coloquial contraction of the word "stanchion"?

In my opinion, you should disregard the comments from 'artis123'. There is no reason to consider the opnion of an adult who cannot spell.

    • Posted By: Mad_Taxpayer @ 10/25/2008 7:15:55 PM

you should check your own spelling LOL

  • Posted By: Newtbo @ 10/25/2008 7:14:03 PM

Why are the rest of the nation's taxpayers subsidizing Alaskans while they get over $3,000 a year BACK from the State? Republican or Democrat-it just doesn't make sense!!

  • Posted By: viverrid @ 10/25/2008 7:11:05 PM

This has nothing to do with Palin. The Feds built a new airport out of the FAA's aviation trust fund (from aircraft fuel taxes and passenger fees) and they built it on an island across from the town, saying that a bridge would be built (by a different agency because that is highways not aviation). Bridge never got built. The airport serves a busy port but thre is no bridge conencting. The bridge isn't for the 14,000 people in the town nor the 50 or so that already lived on the island that the airport was built on. It is for the traveling public. Seems reasonable, especially as it was part of the original deal (but the govt. reneged). Surely there are federally funded highways (and bridges) near where most of you live, too.

  • Posted By: jamups1 @ 10/25/2008 7:13:21 PM

Relax Debbie! Nobody hates Alaska. I pay higher gas prices because you get a check from oil companies. How would you like to pay more for food because the gov of Illinois decides to take on "Big Corn"(farmers) companies in my state and make them pay us for using our soil to produce that corn. Yes, MY CORN is as much yours as YOUR OIL is mine. It is not Alaskan oil or Illinois corn, it is American oil and corn.

I visited Ketchikan in 1999 -- the community and people were charming; the terrain (mountains, islands, ocean) a challenge. Sounds like you really need a bridge! Tenders to the airport must be difficult! We have a real "bridge to nowhere" right here in Ithaca, NY -- it's a large blue steel structure that truly goes over a State highway with nowhere on each end! When will folks start listening?
