Well Mr. Mayor, you apparently don't want that bridge too bad because your statement that you will "make up with your governor" is beyond stupid. Maybe you should work to get rid of your governor. Then, and only then will you have the opportunity to get your bridge and even then it will be a long shot. She has damaged your project probably forever. So, while you sip coffee with her after making up, letter know how disappointed you are and then vote for her again. By the way, didn't she also lie about supporting the bridge originally. You betcha!

LOL...boycott --- Alaska, they want to start killing tourists....

I'm from Canada...and I am one of those folks who visited Ketchikan on a cruise ship the mayor was talking about, The day I was there , the town was humming with activity and the sound of cash registers as we all took in the tours/shops/ and dining establishments, We had a great time. I think this article by Mayor Kiffer was well expressed and totally justified. He sounds quite articulate actually,,,,more than I'm afraid I can say about Governor Palin. The world is watching this election, and with all due respect for the job Gov. Palin is doing for the state of Alaska, she has done little to help John McCain get to the White House. Yes, it was very entertaining to watch her in the beginning, but now I find it quite embarassing for the Republican ticket, What were they thinking??? And no, Beargirl, they will most definately not win the White House, The reputation of the U.S. on the world stage needs an enormous boost, and I'm afraid only one candidate has the ability to do it...Barack Obama. Mayor Kiffer,,,,I hope you get your bridge,,,,

(And no, Beargirl, they will most definately not win the White House), We will see Mr. Booker10. I hope for the USA's sake you are wrong!!!! It will be bad for Obama, of course, if he loses, because next time he'll probably have to prove he is a natural born American. And if he does win, I think 'Arnold' should be able to run. If you are going to open the gate for Obama, you may as well let Chavez run.

Barack Obama has more communist, socialist, Muslim, and criminal allies than he has decent people. He has an Israel hater on his campaign staff. He lent himself to ACORN, which promotes mortagages that will end in foreclosure, which has registered a single voter 72 times. His buddy Ayers was photographed by FoxNews with a big red star on his shirt that covered the whole front of his body. Obama and Osama have one thing in common; they both have friends that bombed the pentagon.

$1,000,000.00 VISITORS PER YEAR..................IF EVERY SINGLE "VISITOR" PAID $2.00 EACH TIME THEY USED THE AIRPORT FOR THE BRIDGE, THEN EVERY YEAR THESE IDIOTS COULD PUT AWAY $2,000,000.00.................................THIS IS A JOKE! THESE IDIOTS DON'T NEED AN AIRPORT FOR A TOWN OF 14,000 PEOPLE! WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!

Why tax a visitor for a bridge that the State of Alaska should have built. Someone dropped the ball a long time ago.

  • Posted By: wmiller51 @ 10/25/2008 7:10:10 PM

Before citizens of Alaska start complaining about a bridge you indicate is needed to get to an airport but tentatively labeled the bridge to nowhere you should consider yourselves lucky that you are all recipients of a fund by the oil companies called Alaska Permanent Fund (APF) created in 1976. The first dividend check was issued in 1982 and every citizen who resided in Alaska for over a year received $1,000. Every year since then each Alaskan citizen has bee issued a check bringing the total to more than $23,000 per citizen. In 2003 the amount was $1,107 and the all time high was 2000 when the amount was $1,964. What other states reward its citizens in such a fashion? Surely not mine where I am being taxed to death, many of the roads are toll roads, local government are bloated and corrupt, and the whole infrastructure from roads, to public transportation, crime, foreclosures, and unemployment is at an all time high. I think pork projects where the rest of the nation is broken should be attended to first.

I live on Prince of Wales Island, 85 air miles from Ketchikan. Ketchikan is the hub of South Southeast Alaska. Our High School wrestlers from 3 communities just went through the airport in Ketchikan. That was after a 3 hour ferry ride from our Island to Ketchikan. We then take another ferry ride, 15 minutes to Ketchikan International Airport. We usually are walking, since it is expensive to put your car on the ferry only to park it. If you check our weather out this week you will see we got 4.45 inches of rain in a 24 hour period with gusts to 70 MPH. (We live in a rain forest, this is normal weather for us this time of year) Try hauling your luggage up a 400 foot incline in THAT! Remember you have been awake since 5 AM to catch a 5 PM filght. And don't get me started on being held hostage with the only Airlines that flies in and out of Ketchikan! You can fly a family of four from Seattle to Chicago for less than it costs to fly anywhere out of Ketchikan. And the airline thanks us for choosing to fly with them. Like the article says; we choose to live here, some because we like fresh air, no traffic, because when there is a death everyone pulls together to help the family. Some of us have roots here for 10, 000 years. Literally! While I live on POW, when I hear people make fun of Ketchikan, it hurts us too. When that woman used Ketchikan as a stepping stone for her 15 minutes of fame, well I can't even print what I called her! Ketchikan does need a bridge. Until you haul your luggage up that ramp please don't assume you know what you are joking about!!

If having a bridge would actually benefit your commmunity at an amount greater than it's cost, then YOUR COMMUNITY should pay to have one built. I suspect that isn't the case though otherwise that would already have happened. YOU may think it is a worthwhile use of MY tax dollars to build a bridge from a town of 14000 to an airport, I don't. You're whining about where the government decided to build the airport? You AUGHT to be happy they paid to build the d*** airport at all. In my opinion you should have had to pay for that too, if it was economically feasable as well, not ME. But OH, you fine upstanding Reublicans would never be tax and spenders.

As a prior cruise ship passenger last year we had the great benefit of stopping at at this beautiful, if small port. Until now, I had no idea about local politics or logistics/infrastructure. I find this story well written and meaningful. I also see now that Governor Sarah is quite the politician in addition to being the hockey mom. Be careful what you see on TV!
    Thanks for this story!

This is politics and Sarah Palin has been under intense media attack from liberal reporters, and they are digging for dirt to put Obama in office instead of focusing on the issues. Mrs. Palin has energized the republican base because she represents what conservatives are about. McCain isn't George W. Bush and Sarah Palin is even less like Bush. She has proven she will reduce government spending, cut taxes and not tolerate the excesses of big oil without making them pay dearly, unlike President Bush. This lady is a talented and proven leader; so what if she's no left coast,Ivy league political insider? That part is a freakin breath of fresh air! She represents people the elite scoff at, and come November 5th, all of you can start calling her by her new name; Mrs. Vice President Sarah Palin!!!

    • Posted By: ChangeisGreat @ 10/25/2008 6:48:13 PM

Yeah, ok, in your delusional world maybe! President Obama and VP Biden is more like it...but good luck with that thought. In the immortal words of MLK, "keep hope alive!"

Go to youtube.com and look up Obama and seek out the stuff he said and you will see his racist comments echo those of his so-called "former priest Jeremy Wright! Your intended vote for Obama is delusional, my intended vote for McCain/Palin is informed!!!

        • Posted By: ChangeisGreat @ 10/25/2008 7:05:41 PM

Informed? and ignorant. You "my friend" are the racist contributing your vote to those idiots. Have you been in a bubble or perhaps like the rest of their sheep, you only read and hear what you want to. Yes, youtube.com is such a reliable, informed source. Pick up a newspaper, any that Palin could name=NONE! and become informed for real. Perhaps read BarackObama.com/plan that might be a good place to start as well. Maybe you should carve a backwards "B" on your cheek and blame it all on a black man as one of your friendly co-followers has done....It's over, and unless McStupid can cheat the election like his "sidekick" traitor friend did(could happen), give it up! And trust me if that happens, there will be a march on Washington by the majority and this country will be in a serious uprise, believe that!

  • Posted By: Missypat @ 10/24/2008 10:15:55 AM

I agree that if the above story is correct that a bridge is needed. However, Alaska should pay for its own bridge. If the state can afford to give $3,000 each year to every person who has lived in the state for a year (socialism?) then Alaska should be able to pay for the bridge itself. It is the only state where people get money back from the government for no other reason that just living there.
Maybe you should elect a new governor, someone who doesn't use taxpayers money to fly their family all over the country, more than 75 one way trips in 1 1/2 years. Something smells here!

    • Posted By: Young Hickory @ 10/24/2008 10:58:44 AM

Well stated! Let them use their own money! I can't believe this guy had the guts to go on record with all the problems we have saying that the money would have been well spent. How does he think people will respond? "Oh, they have almost 14,000 people! Let's send millions to build a bridge!" When you think 14,000 people is a lot then you really have lived in the middle of nowhere too long. I just went to a high school football game with more than 14,000 people.

      • Posted By: princeofwalesalaska @ 10/25/2008 7:05:11 PM

He didn't ask for money. It is telling you Palin is untruthful. He is telling you Palin had no right to use his community to get you people to vote for her. He is saying check it out before you believe her lipstick lips. He is saying our country is made up a "no-wheres". don't let the government use your unique story to bash you for being unique. He isn't saying we want you to pay for our bridge he is saying do your home people!!

      • Posted By: Juneaugirl @ 10/24/2008 3:45:31 PM

The context I'm taking from this article, whether you agree with the bridge or not, is that no one likes to be told they are 'nobody' and that where they live is 'nowhere'. Sarah Palin when running for Governor told the good community of Ketchikan that she did not believe they lived nowhere. She told them she thought they were someone who actually lived somewhere worth living. I did not read in this editorial that the Mayor wants the rest of the USA to build him a bridge - he just wanted to let all of you and our Governor (who know seems to have forgotten what she told their community when campaigning for their vote) that Ketchikan is actually full of someones living somewhere. Their struggles are no less than anywhere else in the country. I live in Alaska because this is my home, my family is from here and I love this land. I do not hold anything against anyone else for where their family lives or where they choose to live. This political campaign has been ugly enough without us turning on an entire community - or a state. Telling the people in Ketchikan that they are being crybabies (when I didn't see anyone crying?) sounds like sour grapes. If you want a dividend, move to Alaska, establish residency, and see just how far that gets you with the cost of living here.

Governor Palin already addressed the flights... All governors get flights for their families. Furthermore, Gov. Palin SOLD the jet and is using commercial flights which saves tons of $$$ for the state of Alaska. Get a grip on your hatred.

I think Gov. Palin has already said that. I believe her exact words were "If we want a bridge, we will build it ourselves."

      • Posted By: JohnSmith789 @ 10/25/2008 6:37:46 PM

well well Palin is ailing - her whole palstic Ken and Barbie world coming down and down it should go - the bridge ..build it and build it ASAP - creates jobs etc.... you know if Palin were governor in Connecticut -- we would at least have locked her up for awhile --we did with Rowland!!!

    • Posted By: markt_30 @ 10/25/2008 4:01:38 PM

From what I remember from being stationed in Alaska, there is only one road running from the Keni Penensula to Prudo Bay with very few and short side roads. The only way to get to the majority of comunities is by plane, which explains all the flights....nothing fishy about it

    • Posted By: Yuseff @ 10/24/2008 12:55:20 PM

The Alaska Wilderness fund is not socialism. The government is made up of the people and its money belongs to the people. In most states when the state has a budget surplus they simply lower taxes. Since Alaska has independent income (no state income taxes) then any extra money the government has SHOULD go to the people in the form of a surplus. Anything else would be socialism.

      • Posted By: amysue @ 10/24/2008 3:36:31 PM

It's not the Alaska Wilderness Fund, it's the Alaska Permanent Fund, and it's based on the state's oil investments. And it's not $2,000 every year, or $3,000 every year. This year it was $2,069, plus the one time $1200 energy resource. The amount changes annually, based on the performance of the investments over the past five years. It was so high this year because 2001 and 2002 finally got knocked out. In 2001 and 2002, it was about $1,000. With the hit the markets have just taken, it's likely to drop again in the next few years as well.

And the ferry doesn't run all night. The last ferry leaves when the last plane arrives, and it doesn't run again until the next fplane runs the next morning. So there is not continual access to the island. Whether the feds should pay for it, I don't know. But it's definitely not unnecessary.

  • Posted By: jprimeau @ 10/25/2008 6:08:17 PM

Great article! Goes to show you that Palin will screw anyone over -- even her own citizens -- if it helps her gain more political power. Too bad that McCain didn't choose Mr. Kiffer as his running mate. Oh, yeah...Kiffer lacks two important credentials: Boobs and a Bible.

    • Posted By: Beargirl @ 10/25/2008 7:04:38 PM

dear jprimeau: If thats true about Palin, you liberals should love her. If you are a liberal and you nail anything that moves, its 'personal'. Palin is just on the wrong side of the ticket as far as far as you're, concerned.

well how many poeple were living on Padre Island in tx. when LBJ pushed for the Kennedy causway? what about all of the bridges to Islands in the south? I guess it doesn't take any knowlege to act stupid and bash one party for something the both do!

  • Posted By: viverrid @ 10/25/2008 7:01:31 PM

Selective use of facts. By opponents, not the Mayor. Yes, the island that the bridge connects to only has about 50 people living on it. BUT IS ALSO HAS THE REGIONAL AIRPORT. (How many people reside on the grounds of, say, Kennedy Airport in NYC, but it has lots of highways to it.) Ketchickan is a major passenger ship port, lots of people fly into the airpost to connect. The town is in one place and the airport is in another. Would you move across to an island (that has no bridge to the mainland) to be closer to the airport? And the airport is fairly new, they are not going to abandon it to move it to the town. They should get the bridge.

  • Posted By: Alaskaguy @ 10/25/2008 4:52:46 PM

unabashedlyreasonable: Matter of opinion. Most of us die hard Alaskans consider the entire lower 48 poorly suited for human habitation. maybe you should push to eject us from the union, and we will use our oil revenues to build our own bridge.

    • Posted By: Mosephus @ 10/25/2008 7:00:44 PM

AlaskaGuy, help me out! I pushed the button and it didn't work you're still part of the USAand living on Uncle Sam's teet . Careful what you wish for, the Permanent Fund will disappear. Although the CEO for BP is a better governor than Sarah!

  • Posted By: SnowyOwl @ 10/25/2008 7:00:15 PM

    Mayor
I have been to Ketchikan by plane. The town is nice too look (from across the water) at but a little hard to get to. I would have like to visit longer if I could have got there. If it where me, I don't think I would be bragging about stopping the bridge to "no where". I SERIOUSLY did not know this is where she was talking about.... shame shame Palin.

  • Posted By: zekeput@msn.com @ 10/25/2008 6:59:26 PM

Remember, Alaska has 25+billion sitting it a fund that pays each Alaskan 1000 to 2000 a year. This fund is set aside for this purpose and Alaskan's refuse to use the money to run their own state. I lived in Alaska for many years and came to the conclusion it is simply one big welfare state. This state is vehemently antigovernment but is first in line for a free handout and oh, so proud of it. If you want to see wasteful pork barrel spending, spend some time up there.

  • Posted By: todd nadrich @ 10/25/2008 6:59:20 PM

yes, were all yuppies in the lower 48, drinking starbucks and paying with our iphones, so when the oil runs out, we will give you back to the Ruskies or worse Canada...we are all Americans....Ted Stevens sold you guys out, only now you guys have woken up....

  • Posted By: mccluretiger @ 10/24/2008 2:20:49 PM

Perhaps Alex2000 needs to look at a map and crack open a 4th grade science book. Ketchikan, Alaska is well.....in Alaska where it tends to get rather cold for a good part of the year, and when it gets cold water freezes. Rather hard to run a ferry year round when the water is frozen, and there are times of the year when the ice is not thick enough to support vehicle traffic, yet not thin enough for the ferry to bust through.

    • Posted By: princeofwalesalaska @ 10/25/2008 6:57:15 PM

Sorry, we appreciate your concern but we have freezing water up north. Our cute lil ferry runs all winter.

    • Posted By: Hungry Bear @ 10/24/2008 2:46:10 PM

Actually, the water there doesn't freeze. The average high temperature in January is 39 ° and the water flows in from the Pacific Ocean. They already have ferry service during the winter.
