Mayor Kiffer: Well said. Perspective is always subject to motive and expedience and lack of real understanding. You have provided a truly based perspective and as clearly and simply as such a topic deserves. Using your comments on this matter, I should think you community will be the better for your contributions.

It is obvious that the majority of lower 48 people don't have a clue about the difficulties trying to make a life in Alaska. I would like each one putting down the "Bridge" to do without Federal projects in the town for over 32 years. Maybe we should stop sending "OUR" oil and fish and timber to you,and instead send it all out of the country. Have a nice day!!!

Pass a local bond issue to get the local bridge you want. IF Obama is elected, you can kiss your bridge idea goodbye, he will divide the needed (govt) funds up to all those people who have never (and dont) worked and paid in taxes!! When are people going to wake up and realize, tax payers are sick and tired of supporting welfare for those who wont work and illegal aleins!! At the rate of "sharing" proposed by Obama, you will never get your bridge, because all the working, tax payers will have their INCREASED taxes put into the "Pork Pot" and distributed to all the "welfare" low-lifes!

Ketchikan is a quite little community nestled into the edge of a mountain that survives in large part to the tourist trade. The bridge is necessary if this community is to expand and grow. The land behind the city is rugged and would require extensive work to carve out the side of a rock filled mountain in order to expand. The island across the channel is reasonably flat and an ideal opportunity to expand and grow. The issue is the channel that needs to be spanned with the "bridge" is only about one half mile wide at its narrowest point. This same channel is the roadway for all the incoming and outbound cruise lines that visit Ketchikan daily from spring until early to mid October. This means the bridge must be short in span and high to allow ships to pass, Hence the cost issue, not to mention the engineering issue. Gov. Palin threw the residents of Ketchikan under the bus when she tried to earn pooints in the media with the "bridge to nowhere" comment. Having visited Ketchikan for the last several years now, I hope those residents remember her comments. Ketchilan is a beautiful quiet community that is a million miles away from the hussle and bussle of the lower 48, and thats a good thing! To the citizens of Ketchikan, you have a beautiful community, provide great hospitality and are an incredible fisihing spot as well. Thanks to all of you, and I hope to return next year to take advantage of everything you have to offer.

Palin won. No bridge. Get over it.

  • Posted By: Dave Allen @ 10/25/2008 6:28:50 PM

As I recall, when this whole thing about the bridge was coming down, even the media portrayed it as a "bridge to nowhere" and hung it up as the poster child for pork barrel spending. So stop whining, maybe if the town would have presented its case better it would have gotten the bridge. I believe that Governor Palin was speaking somewhat metaphorically when she talked about the "bridge to nowhere," so get over it. I agree, let the cruise lines and airlnes pony up for the bridge. Make it a toll bridge and then they can get repayed. 250,000 people passing through is hardly something for the taxpayers to mess with. By the way, how do you get to the airport now, backstroke?

The last person to comment is a moron. Please keep your retard levels to a minimun when posting to this discussion. One more thing... JT2008 try keeping your nose out of Palin's ass for a moment and maybe you'll see the bigger picture.

I lived in Juneau for 40 years, and Ketchikan has not grown any. It has cruise ship tourism and some fishing, and not much else. It is not likely to grow much in the next forseeable future. There is a very efficient small ferry system (about a 5 minute ride) that shuttles people back and forth from the airport. To suggest that it needs a bridge (which would have to be like San Diego's Coronado bridge to allow cruise ships to get under it) is simply not defensible in terms of the cost of building such a bridge.

    • Posted By: Alex2000 @ 10/24/2008 9:29:19 PM

exactly. No one has yet explained what is wrong with the current ferry system. I have asked about it two times, but have yet to receive an answer.

      • Posted By: princeofwalesalaska @ 10/25/2008 6:27:20 PM

Think about a bridge where you live. Now it's gone. Now you pay $5.00 one way to get across in half an hour. And now the country is saying this is the way it has been so live with it.

      • Posted By: justanotherKtowngirl @ 10/25/2008 3:31:09 PM

Yes the ferries are old. They constantly need work. But are they still running? Yes.
Look at it this way, One ferry burns 2000gal of diesel a week. (at 5.326/gal) There are 2 ferries running during the summer. One Captians wage is a little over 60K a year. (there are currently 6 workers making captians wages as of today) Deckhand's Wage is a tad over 40K. (with 4 deckhands). Not to mention the repair costs for the boats themselves.
My point is that it's a lot of upkeep, and building a bridge and charging a toll might just payoff in the long run.
Ah, yes...another thing about wastefull spending? The voters here in Ketchikan just said that our Borough could buy a BEACH for a little over 1 million dollars. (aren't we surrounded by beaches? Why did we need to BUY one?) JMHO.

      • Posted By: Palinnomore @ 10/25/2008 12:29:18 AM

I lived in Ketchikan where the bridge to nowhere is from...the only problem with the ferry system is that they run on half hours...so if you miss it your screwed unless your early enough to still catch the next one and make your flight. Also the maintenance on the ferries might be another reason, not sure what the cost is but when I was there they were fairly old ferry boats. Other than that not real sure what the issue is other than they want to develop, grow and expand the island of gravina where the airport is because it is rare flat developable land.

        • Posted By: no-doz @ 10/25/2008 12:52:12 PM

You inability to make a half-hourly ferry boat is not worth my tax dollars and the cost of the boats is a fraction of both the cost of a new bridge and its upkeep.

  • Posted By: oceancruiser @ 10/25/2008 5:47:04 PM

What he says is true. It is a beautiful community. I have visited Ketchikan via cruise ship and saw that the only way you could get to the airport was via a boat or ferry. The politians should be ashamed of themselves.

    • Posted By: Wolf Wolfman @ 10/25/2008 6:26:47 PM

And you (socialist) should be ashamed of yourself!

  • Posted By: JT2008 @ 10/25/2008 6:26:17 PM

To me this article sounds like a kindergartner who got insulted and never got over it. Who cares if they called it the Bridge to Nowhere? That was a long time ago. Get over it! And shame on you for speaking poorly of your governor who works so hard to make your state a great place to live!

  • Posted By: sueinmn @ 10/25/2008 5:48:05 PM

so if the bridge is not to be built, where is all that money?? Gov Palin did not return it to the Federal Gov. Is in Alaska somewhere. I would suggrest finding it and biulding your luggage conveyer belt and and nice ferry station. The money was earmarked so atleast get something out of it. But where did all that money end up? Still wondering.

    • Posted By: Wolf Wolfman @ 10/25/2008 6:25:38 PM

It went to the Alaska Department of Transportation.

To me, this article sounded like an insulted kindergartner who got made fun of and never got over it. It just sounds like a bunch of sniveling to me. Who cares if it was called the Bridge to Nowhere? That was years ago. Get over it. And shame on you for speaking poorly of your governor who works hard to make sure your state is a great place to live!!

GIVE THIS CITY THERE BRIDGE----YOU PROMISED THEM 30 YEARS AGO----I WOULD BE DAMN IF THIS IS A BRIDGE TO NOWHERE!Times are hard---this would be a good place for America to put people to work----build them there bridge----instead of using it for political votes---Ketchikan fight for your bridge more than ever----this man from Missouri says build that bridge! Randy E. Braun

Screw them..... and their redderick. There are some of us out here that knew that it wasn't a bridge to nowhere. It really is a vital link for the people that live in that area. I really hope that someday the plan for that bridge can outlive its stigma and get built..

    • Posted By: Wolf Wolfman @ 10/25/2008 6:23:41 PM

Your comment reveals that you are uneducated, use questionable language, and that you have socialist tendencies.

  • Posted By: DaytonOhio @ 10/25/2008 8:53:56 AM

No one is implying that this bridge is a bad idea or useless. It's just that the rest of us don't see why we should pay for it.

    • Posted By: princeofwalesalaska @ 10/25/2008 6:22:59 PM

Because our tax dollars paid for yours.

  • Posted By: Laura in TX @ 10/25/2008 3:02:21 PM

So sorry--but if your community wants a bridge, your community should pay for it. Knock yourself out.

    • Posted By: princeofwalesalaska @ 10/25/2008 6:20:43 PM

Laura I do live in Alaska and I did pay my federal income taxes to buy your bridges in your little state and to maintain your bridges and highways that you use. I don't plan on using them in the near of distant furture. I don't tell you this to whine, it is a fact I pay taxes too, I don't complain about the pork headed your way. I'd tell you to come visit, but we like it up here.

  • Posted By: mdeshof @ 10/25/2008 6:13:03 PM

Why is it that when it comes to taxing business the republican's say "leave us alone", yet when it comes to grabbing taxpayer's money for projects that will benefit business their hands are wide open? I say let the cruise lines and airlines pay for the bridge.

    • Posted By: jonsnow13 @ 10/25/2008 6:20:42 PM

idiot. let the locals pay for the bridge.

Senator Barack Obama is showing surprising strength among portions of the political coalition that returned George W. Bush to the White House four years ago, a cross section of support that, if it continues through Election Day, would exceed that of Bill Clinton in 1992, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News polls.

Underscoring the building strength of Mr. Obama's candidacy in the final phase of the campaign, he was ahead of Mr. McCain among various groups that voted for Mr. Bush four years ago: those with incomes greater than $50,000 a year; married women; suburbanites; white Catholics, and is even competitive among white men, a group that has not voted for a Democrat over a Republican since 1972, when pollsters began surveying people after they voted.

Stick a fork in it, baby.....This thing is over!!!!!!

Be careful where you stick that fork. It could prove to be very uncomfortable to you!!! Remember that old saying "You can fool all the people, some of the time, Some of the people, all the time; however, you cannot fool all the people all the time."

Correction, $10 billion a month in Iraq, not to mention how much we're spending in Afghanistan, which is where we need to focus our efforts against the real terrorists. A new day will come January 2009, & just really hope we don't have another Republican in office. Not to say McCain is not an honorable man, I respect him as a veteran & honorable Senator, but the US really needs change in our administration & in congress. The US is fast losing it's standard as a respected nation in the world, & our standard of living is declining. The US needs to get back to the basics, & start investing in our own communities, education, infrastructure, science & technology. The corporate profits & motives of the politically elite do not serve the average US taxpayer & there needs to be fundamental change in our nation. "Sharing the wealth" is another term that doesn't make much sense, since the large part of our wealth comes from "you know who" the US taxpayer, so I believe that wealth needs to refocused BACK in the US economy & benefit all of us. I'm no longer willing to spend our wealth on other countries that hate us, & in an occupation that costs "$10 billion dollars a MONTH" not to mention what it's going to cost us for the care of the veterans coming back from this war & occupation. Those are costs that we haven't even factored in, I fear that will cost us more that we ever imaged!!

I have two real good ideas to solve the problem that Ketchikan and all of Alaska has regarding their bridges, roads, and other infrastructure. Pay a state income tax like many of the rest of us Americans do for the purposes of building and maintaining infrastructure within your state.. Take some of the money that the oil companies pay each resident of the state of Alaska each year and build and maintain your infrastructure. I, for one, am tired of subsidizing Alaska's less than 1 million people with federal dollars when they have the ability to take care of their own problems using their money, not mine. Until then they should quit complaining about other Americans' complaints about the "Bridge to Nowhere.". Alaska still got the money that the "Bridge to Nowhere" would have cost from the federal governmentt. That cash still went to their infrastructure. I wish they would send me some of that money and fix the road in front of my house.

What a great story about people and the bridge to nowhere which is actually to somewhere with people in the state of Alaska! I am voting for Obama and me liking the story has nothing to do with Palin. Just that I think this is a heartwarming story about real people amongst all of the negative stuff we are hearing in the campaign.
