Move the town to the airport area and develope the land over there.
Move the town to the airport area and develope the land over there.
maybe they should have built the airport in Russia and then there wouldn't have been a need for a bridge
Genius!!! You forgot to mention in your post though, who gets which piece of land and how much $$ they are allotted for their move and how to get all of the equipment there to move all of their belongings and what to do with all of the vacant houses (can't move them, no bridge because they are irrellevant remember). Maybe you have the money to move them sitting around. I know I can't just afford to move where and when I feel like it, must be nice.
This town of 14,000 selfish??? Are you kidding me?? Geez I see you need to work on your education also for your atrocious spelling unspacy.
Fery is ferry
rediculously is ridiculously
senic is scenic
rout is route
insted is instead
Are you against tax dollars going to education also?
So what you're saying is you Independent Alaskan survivalists set up shop in Ketchikan and forgot there were mountains. Then when you had no place to grow, it's suddenly the Lower 48's responsibility to build you an airport. But those pesky bumbling FEDS built your FREE airport on Gravina... seems like a lame deal to me... wait, did you say Gravina is the ONLY place with FLAT, unused land. Hmmm. Where else could an airport have been built then? On the side of one of your three mountains??? Sounds like the FEDS made the best of a BAD situation. Now you folks want to compound the bad decision you made choosing to live in where there's no flat land by asking us to squander OUR tax dollars.
And now you folks are COMPLAINING you don't like the result. Here's a really shocking and novel idea Ketchikaners -- MOVE. Move someplace flatter with more space so you can grow and prosper and build your own damn airport and not stick us Lower 48ers with a freaking ridiculously expensive bill for a bridge that will only save YOU a hassle and expense. Mr. Kiffer, since you're a 5-time generation Ketchikaner, use some of your good ol' Alaskan independent spirit and solve the problem caused by YOUR CHOICE to live where there's no flat land available for an airport!!!
You're the poster children for PORK and government waste because of Ketchikaner's complete lack of responsibility for accepting that they moved to a geographically unsustainable location. Then you ingrates complain about the placement of the airport (Newsflash: most runaways are flat) and that "it's a hassle and costs money" to live where you CHOSE to live. If you folks don't like the situation, MOVE! Or pay for your own damn bridge.
Glad you are there and not up here. Same could be said about California and the wild fires, Florida and the storms, New Orleans and storms, Midwest and their storms, HHHMMM do we see a pettern Smarthotguy? You are ignorant, please you don't have to prove it we know already.
FYI:
They same could be said for the people who live in New Orleans and are waiting for a government handout because they chose to live under sealevel. Unfortunately, we keep feeling sorry for them and send them money to rebuild their houses. Maybe they should buy flood insurance...oh, wait, its our responsibiliity to feel sorry for them and bail them out.
Towns grow sometimes over the years. What a jerk you are. It is a wonderful town and the people are so friendly. Sarah took their dream and threw it away.
Big Bigby : Actually it was Mayor Weinstein that bashed Sarah Palin on national TV.. Not our newly elected Mayor Kiffer. (We elected him Oct. 7th)
So you comment about him bashing her and then begging for money again makes no sense.
eyecarrumba! Before you start throwing stones about stupid's spelling you should look up Indicative in the dictionary!! Better to be thought a fool than to open your big mouth and prove it. Ibpilot
What they really need is a better ferry to get to the island with the airport.
Most Alaskans did not want to see the moneys wasted on the bridge when the rest of the state had so many unmet road and bridge needs.
However, there were several people in Ketchikan who were long term buddies of US Rep. Don Young, so Young did by his friends.
Young would be out of a job this year except for the fact that Democrats in Alaska stabbed each other in the back. Some were governor wannabees. Some were intoxicxated on Obama's snake oil. Both used "troopergate" to slam Palin giving Alaska and Alaskans national backeyes in the process.. The backlash against Democrats will insure that both Don young and Ted Stevens will be reelected. Two promising Democrats will go down to defeat.
Of course, Obama does not care that his internet thugs helped shoot down two good men!
Actually, the Troopergate investigation was called for by Alaskan Republicans, not Democrats. The Court found her guilty. The Personnel Board did, too. And guess who appoints the members of the Personnel Board? The Governor of Alaska. So calling this an action by Democrats is ignorant of the facts. Calling Obama an employer of internet thugs is not only ignorant, it's libel. Please remember to engage your brain before putting your mouth in gear. Thank you.
Is it true that Alaska does not have state income taxes? I recide in Mn. and we have a high rate of states tax. Could alaska look at implementing a state tax to perhaps help pay for state projects or better yet, stile a better deal with the gas line and oil companies. Mn has it's lotteries that was suppose to bring relief to property tax and schools but it seems to go everywhere else but! When the head of the lottery committed suicide it must make you wonder where all that money does go!! We had a vital bridge collapse and finally a new one built with many more more need dire repairs.
Perhaps that's why Canada's taxes are higher .. to afford health benefits as well as bridges, when needed, as it certainly sounds like Ketchikan does. Palin is an embarassment to humans in general. Hopefully, her 15 minutes of 'fame' are soon over.
At least when McCain and Palin win the White House, you won't have to worry about your private life be blurted out to the public to ridicule you for having an oposing opinion. Freedom isn't free. A soldier fought and possibly died for you to spew your hatred.
This goes out to 77dominic - I am a PROUD Republican, however before I speak, or type, in this matter, I would at least learn how to spell! This is very indicitive of how stupid you really are!

Comment: I cant believe MSN would post this on there cover page! it seems to me that they are in support of Democrats. Which makes me wanna change my home page."
To correct you, it should be their cover page, NOT there cover page! Go back to school and educate yourself before you make anymore uneducated decisions or comments!
Let me also add that I feel that this is a FANTASTIC new piece. Thank you for sharing it with us and I am proud to have MSN as my homepage who will bring me ALL of the stories, without persuasion.
that was great thank you for the correction next time i need an editor ill be sure to call
btw i think everyone else got my point
for Gardengirl031556 ,
I am almost histarical, the only thing he is missing in the photo is a salmon draped across his shoulders. This guy is a user and a loser.
Mayor Kiffer,
Why will you not acknowledge the fact that Sarah Palin is a pathalogical liar who will say or do anything for political expediency?
Because the "you betcha Queen" will hopefully have to return to Alaska. We don't want her back, but the alternative is for her to be Queen of America. You see how she treats us, can you imagine what she'd do the the US of A??? We'll take her back, and you can build us a bridge for doing you the favor!! =)~
Thanks, eyecarrumba!
MSN appreciates all the debate on this from both sides :-)
Alaska seems to be one of those states that gets forgotten about by the government. Hey Senator Palin, while you're in DC can you let the people over there know "Hey guys, umm Ketchikan needs a bridge. Can I get some money for that? It's kinda important" and smile :) But then again that would mean doing your actuall job :)
UUUMMM, I thought Palin was Governor of Alaska, not a senator....hhhmmmmm
markt You are so right.
However, when a Liberal puts their foot in their mouth its so much fun just to stand back and have a good laugh. I take pleasure in small joys this election. Like when Chucky Schumer threatens the US Commerce (for supporting the GOP) that he will get even with them when Obama becomes president.
Hmmm Please think before you vote...
It's really important this time.
hey daniquinn,
sorry I did not even read the article, I just looked at the cover, saw the reference to the mayor, and went , (I remember this jirk). Oh yeh, by the way, where is you bridge??? Maybe there is some people out there still coherent enough to vote your BS bridge down.
Dave Kiffin for Governor! He is articulate, honest and straight-forward, more than can be said for Sarah Palin. And it looks like maybe he buys his own clothes, too.
I didn't see the Bridge to Nowhere, or actually where it was supposed to be, but I did go to Ketchican (off a cruise ship) and enjoyed it very much. Ketchican is definitely NOT Nowhere, and I wouldn't mind going back, but a bridge seems to me to make sense???or a ferry boat, if they don't have one already. Because next time I go to Ketchican, I'd like to stay awhile.
I cannot believe that a community of 14,000 people would be so selfish as to make this request. When there is a perfectly good fery line in place. What would happen to those hundreds of jobs if a rediculously expensive bridge was built! What would happen to the senic fery lines that travel along that rout! Oh! I know! lets put up a hundred million dollar bridge insted so the larger ships can go through. This bridge is now and has always been a sham and the Mayor should be ashamed of himself!
Someone should start the "Dave Kiffer for Governor" campaign. He's articulate, honest, and straightforward. More than can be said for Sarah Palin. And he dresses better too!
Brady ND.....when she has federal tax dollars in her hands it is our ( lower 48 ) busines to know what it is being used for.....If it's local Alaskan tax dollars I'd agree with you.....but palin asked for thiese funds through means of federal earmarks which makes irt our business and sarh Palin heard the outcry about the "bridge to nowhere" and listen to the people who actuallty put those tax dollars in her hands.....She listened to the people and backed off from doing it and has gotten slammmed by the likes of this joker wanting us to support it now.....What a joke!!!
I live on Prince of Wales Island, 85 air miles from Ketchikan. Ketchikan is the hub of South Southeast Alaska. Our High School wrestlers from 3 communities just went through the airport in Ketchikan. That was after a 3 hour ferry ride from our Island to Ketchikan. We then take another ferry ride, 15 minutes to Ketchikan International Airport. We usually are walking, since it is expensive to put your car on the ferry only to park it. If you check our weather out this week you will see we got 4.45 inches of rain in a 24 hour period with gusts to 70 MPH. (We live in a rain forest, this is normal weather for us this time of year) Try hauling your luggage up a 400 foot incline in THAT! Remember you have been awake since 5 AM to catch a 5 PM filght. And don't get me started on being held hostage with the only Airlines that flies in and out of Ketchikan! You can fly a family of four from Seattle to Chicago for less than it costs to fly anywhere out of Ketchikan. And the airline thanks us for choosing to fly with them. Like the article says; we choose to live here, some because we like fresh air, no traffic, because when there is a death everyone pulls together to help the family. Some of us have roots here for 10, 000 years. Literally! While I live on POW, when I hear people make fun of Ketchikan, it hurts us too. When that woman used Ketchikan as a stepping stone for her 15 minutes of fame, well I can't even print what I called her! Ketchikan does need a bridge. Until you haul your luggage up that ramp please don't assume you know what you are joking about!!
10,000 years you've choose to do that. if you want to live in small towns like that its your choice. Just like poeple who wanna live in florida shouldn't ask the fed to pay sprinkler systems to keep everyone cool. Have you ever tried to walk a cross a parking lot in tropical weather at over 100 degrees?
