Perhaps Ketchikan, like New Orleans, is located at an area that is poorly suited for human habitation. It might be cheaper to relocate these residents permanently to a location that has some purpose for existing?

      Liberal!!!

Not too long ago everything west of the Mississippi was considered uninhabitable. Stupid Lewis and Clark, right? Columbus too for that matter. Round earth, what an idiot he was, right? You must be a little heavy in the forehead, thinking the way you do.

I think the article was well written. I had no idea that the Bridge to Nowhere is actually going somewhere. Since I live in the Southeast and have not been Northwest ever, who's to know! This bridge is vital to the survival of their community. I have read some comments that suggest moving and asking why they live there. They live there because they love it, it's where their friends and family are. Why do any of us live where we live? Kudos on speaking up and bringing this to attention! Shame on Governor Palin for saying this is not important and out of the other side of her mouth saying how she is here for all the people.

    hey princeofwales,

You say you choose to live there and then cry about not having a bridge? If you don't like your travel arrangements, move, otherwise I'm not going to feel very sorry for you. I just read a guy's post that lives in the town and it sounds like at least 50% of the people are against the bridge.

I get a kick out of how the folks who obviously want to make this a political issue against the McCain/Palin ticket do so withsuch absolute disrespect. The point here is that this is a huge waste of taxpayer money to benefit very very few people. I wonder how queertyo987 would like it if someone spoke about his mother, wife, or sister that way?

    • Posted By: RiverR @ 10/25/2008 5:01:52 PM

sure you can see it as a waste of money - by the way, where is that money now??

  • Posted By: canmexma @ 10/25/2008 5:01:35 PM

Though from the neighboring country, I am impressed by Dave's words and by this city's needs. If I were an American, it would make me think twice about voting for Palin, much as I am otherwise favorable towards her candidacy. If it were your city, would you call the mayor a jerk? I sure don't think so.

I only wish Tina Fey was Sarah Palin, that would explain why Palin couldnt even list the responsibilities a vice president has

If they have so little land in the town and are hemmed in on three sides then leave and move the town near the airport on all that land they say they need to develope anyway.

  • Posted By: cbrudos @ 10/25/2008 4:36:55 PM

I believe Ketchikan deserves a bridge to their airport (controlled by the Feds). Just because they don't live in New York City and don't have a horrendous crime problem doesn't mean they don't deserve some help. How many billion dollar Interstate Highway projects were built in the lower 48? Lots of them, but none in Alaska. Let's give them a break!

    • Posted By: lbjcariad @ 10/25/2008 5:00:29 PM

None in Alaska?? Have you ever been to Alaska? By car? How'd y'get there? Probably on THE ALASKA HIGHWAY, which was originally called The Alcan Highway, built during WWII to permit movement of troops, which is basically why all interstates were built. No highways built in Alaska--what a joke!

Bravo, Mr Mayor!! That was a very informative and compelling article. You've spoken up not only for your town, but succinctly incorporated the feeling of frustration of many smaller (overlooked and undervalued) towns across our nation. I sure like your sprit! and I love your attitude! Let's hope "they" hear you!!!!!!!
All the best to you and Ketchikan!

I cant believe MSN would post this on there cover page! it seems to me that they are in support of Democrats. Which makes me wanna change my home page.

I've read the last half a dozen or so comments. Most are negative towards Alaska. Why? Have any of you folks ever been to Alaska or let alone lived there? Probably not. Well I have. From August 1994 thru June 2000, I lived and worked in Fairbanks, Alaska. It's a great state with great people. Some of which I keep in touch with to this day. Do you know 2 Street? The Turtle Club in Fox, Alaska? Skinny Dicks on the side of the hill on The Parks Highway? Go there and visit with the residents. You will come away a different opinion of this, the 49th state of our great union!! Semper Fi!!!

  • Posted By: BradyND @ 10/25/2008 4:57:35 PM

Some of the comments about Palin reflect an opinion obviously based on SNL's characterization of her. It's funny that some of you idiots base your comments about her on a spoof. You actually seem to believe that Tina Fey is Palin. I love it!

  • Posted By: seahawks13 @ 10/25/2008 4:57:32 PM

Kind of convenient timing isn't it Mr. Mayor (int the tank for Obama) Democrat? I mean you could have mentioned this when Palin got in the race, but you decided to wait until now?

  • Posted By: kingr @ 10/25/2008 4:56:41 PM

    hey daniquinn,
i do not know where you live, but if Ketchikan to bad. Anyone with half a brain would not vote for this guy. Like I said , he is a user and a loser.

OK kids, quibble not. Both parties do the same thing. Our entire system of government has become what it is because we the people have abrogated our responsibility of being active in the process of government, The "silent majority" has allowed virtually all of the problems in this country to become what they are today. Quit sitting back and watching in amazement as our country crumbles! Turn off the TV, get off the couch and make your voices heard! Quit buying into the we're right and they are wrong so everything is their fault crap that both partys spew. We all have knowledge and experiences that bring value to the discussion and even though we don't agree on everything, we are all AMERICANS and need to take the best of what each one of us can offer to pull this country back from the brink of destruction. Pull together, not apart. Share ideas not criticism. We are at a crucial time in the course of this great nation, when we will either stand together dust each other off and move forward, or sit pointing fingers at each other as we sink into oblivion. Partisan politics is an obstruction to good government. Let your elected ofifcials know you expect them to create solutions not wallow in the problems. Share your ideas, support the good ideas that others have. Worry not about who gets the credit because if we do not, there will be more than enough blame to go around for all.

Wow, that was a great post. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that we the people are involved in less and less important decisions every year. The situation with the bailout is a good example, the people, specially the 60% who will be stuck paying the bill should have had a say whether or not to go forward with it.

I think liberals and people who are uneducated will end up voting Obama in to office. I HATE THE IDEA OF BIG GOVERNMENT. I would like to see this community get some help with the bridge they need so bad.

    • Posted By: Mosephus @ 10/25/2008 4:55:27 PM

This is for Crusty and Brady. I think Conservitives and people who are uneducated will end up voting McCain and Palin in to office. BIG GOVERNMENT always gets bigger when a Republican president is elected. I would hate to see this community get some help with the bridge they don't need.
When did Ronnie RayGun become the shining light? I know my life sucked during his administration, I had an 11 1/2 % mortgage, are you old enough to remember that recession?

  • Posted By: Ktown girl @ 10/25/2008 4:55:15 PM

I live in Ketchikan Alaska and I have to say I am against the bridge, along with about 50% of our city residents. It's an expense that we don't want. Most of us would prefer to stay a small and unique city without the suburban developments of the lower 48. Dave Kiffer, mayor of Ketchikan, should not speak for all of us, especially on NEWSWEEK!!!!!

  • Posted By: HOPEfor'08 @ 10/25/2008 4:54:57 PM

wow why y'all hatein' on Palin for? is itjust because she is the coolest hockey mom out there?:)
any ways i'm gettin' tired of these immatured/ un true statements about Palin! how about y'all liberals get your head out of Obama's butt and look who can actually give what they promise!
i hope y'all think about that we you guys are lying awake tonight thinking about funny jokes about Palin!
haha that just made my day! :]

  • Posted By: phoke @ 10/25/2008 4:45:51 PM

The city of Ketchikan should have had that bridge along time ago if the governor was not spending 150K on campaign wardrobe, 11K per week for a hairdresser to get that perfectly streaked haircolor, 10K japanese made rimless eyeglasses, (come on people, who the hell spends that kind of $$ on eyeglasses and then, tries to call themself "just another hockey mom"?) I doubt the hockey moms can afford any of that. She charged the state of alaska 22K for her daughters to fly around the country w/ her and stay in very expensive hotels, but when you see footage of her speaches, her daughters look quite bored and annoyed that mom is making them go w/ her to work cause the oldest set a bad example and got KU'd. Sarah Palin wants to keep same sex unions from having a basic human right (marriage), but what if liberals ran a return add about a kid coming home from school and telling their mommy that its ok to get knocked up, and then, maybe marry your prince? Send her lying ass back to the freezer!
