Bigby, it's not Palin's job to listen to the lower 48. She is the governor of Alaska. Even though she obviously had her sights set on something bigger, she's still been elected to do a job in Alaska. From what I can tell, Kiffer's just doing the job he was elected to do.

I do not know what had happen to my last post but I'm reposting what I said before. I understand these guys said they need a bridge, but with all that money Alaska should be making from oil, are they saying they do not have the money to build that bridge? If any project needs Fed money, one should ask whether it will benefit all of America as a whole. So far, I do not think a bridge, that costs millions of dollars for just 14,000 people, will benefit most of America.

Yes, you need a bridge. Alaska, with its oil money, is one of the richest areas in our country; you guys don't even pay state taxes--and sometimes, you get PAID by the state. There's nothing wrong with that, I am happy for you. Wish I had the same. But: you can afford to build your own bridge, you don't need my money to do it.

want a bridge ! build it ! charge a docking fee of one dollar for each person on a ship also charge each plane a fee of twentyfive dollars and you can build your bridge and maintain it and help out the city. the only point to look at is build the bridge to blend in with the natural beauty of the land and nature . please keep it simple, safe and with the land

      Smart!!

If this town wanted a bridge, they would have one. There are hundreds of ways to raise the kind of money you need for these things. But being a welfare state Alaska has to suck from the teet that is washington instead of doing it themselves. oh and for all you Obama haters. eat my dick . The world is tired of you *** conservatives ruining everything for the rest of us. *** you. *** your war. *** sarah palin . drop the mic...***

  • Posted By: PPro43 @ 10/25/2008 4:38:37 PM

Bull! More political bull. Just wait until the democrates get into office and see how the bucks will fly out the door and all of you are paying taxes at the rate of 50 to 75%. What will be your liberal comments then? So what if they have to ride a ferry. It is not like they are stranded. As usual you are only looking for the negative against MCCain and Palen. Why not look at Obama's record, Acorn, Aires, THE MONEY. Wake up.

    • Posted By: mcclurema @ 10/25/2008 4:50:16 PM

Please quit making responsible conservatives look bad by your blatant exagerations. IE... 50%-70% tax rate. When you write crap like that it turns people off because they think you are an idiot! That in turn makes a lot of people ignore anything said from a conservative and that is NOT good. In summary, please refrain from public correspondance for you are NOT good for our cause!!

So tell me what became of the money for the bridge to no where as it has been reported that Gov. Palin kept it. I dont undrstand how Todd Palin gets by with his dealings. I read he is working extremely hard on getting the Captiol moved from Juno to Anchorage and causing jobs to be lost in the process. (the jobs are moving first and the capitol will follow lastly) How does the Alaskan citizens sit by and allow this abusive first family to
steal away their great state? She clearly is a self serving power hungry mogal and will stop at nothing in her way to succeed her end means. Her checks and balances need to be monitored closely.

Funding for a needed project should never take 30 years. If this community needs assistance, we should help--the same way we have helped those of us "on the mainland". Also, why cannot some of Alaska's earnings from future oil wells be diverted to this (and other) needed infrastructure improvements. Here is one american's wish that this community is given the positive attention that it deserves. Kirk in PA.

hey kingr~ YOU are a joke if you think that airing Kiffer's alleged (and may I add, irrelevant) dirty laundry is the mature and responsible thing to write. This is an issue about a bridge. Again, a bridge. A bridge promised to the people a good 30 years ago. This is not about Mayor Kiffer's behavior after consumption of alcohol on a delayed flight. GROW UP.

    This guy is a joke!!!!

He slams Sarah Palin on national T.V. and makes her look bad for listening to the lower 48 states outcry over this bridge and deciding not to build it.......Good for her!

Now he's going to the national media to beg those same lower 48 states to get approval to build it????

Sarah Palin listened to the rest of the people who's money was in her hands.....Maybe he should get a clue and not bite the hands that feed him before asking for another helping......!!!!

Football mom, the hell are you talking about? She's the governor, the head of state in Alaska, not a US Senator. That's not her job.

I lived in Ketchikan in the early 1970s and one had to ride the Grumman Goose(afloat plane) to Annette Island to be able to fly on a jet plane to wherever. The airport on Gravina Island was built after I moved back to interior Alaska, and the ferry service provided transportation to and from Ketchikan. The present mayor of the city has written a very complete and heartfelt letter regarding the issue of "the bridge" and I feel that he is correct in his comments. Ketchikan has 32 miles of road running from north to south. That's it. Of course there are city streets, but they only connect to other small city streets. It was a very warm and friendly town to live in. The tourists that visit there often come back to savor the small town atmosphere and warmth that Alaska's small towns have to offer. I firmly believe that access to Gravina Island needs to be strongly considered both by the federal and state government. With the death of the logging industry, it seems like tourism is one of the few occupations available unless one is already in possession of a fishing permit. That's another story!!

While it's great that this town is getting some much needed attention and possible solution to their on-going situation, isn't it funny how the left-wing media always reports these issues at times like these and mostly in such a light to make the conservative party out to be some organization that doesn't care about communities or hasn't lead the way in keeping our small towns safe and equipt? What, are there no infrastructure problems in Illinois??

Well written Mr. Kiffer. At least he appears to be a man who cares about the interests of the place he was elected to represent, unlike Congress and apparently unlike Palin, who throws her constituents under the bus when there's a bigger fish to fry.

I've only read a half a dozen comments to this article and all seem to be negative. Have any of you folks every been to Alaske or let alone lived there? I have; from 1994 thur 2000 I lived and worked in Fairbanks. Alaska is a great state with great people! Don't make remarkers about a place you've never been to. I miss 2 street; The Turtle Clubb in Fox ans Skiny Dicks on the side of the Parks Highway. I suggest you go to Alaska, meet the folks, travel the state and you'll probably have a very different opinion of this great state.

Manhattan use to be no where. What would Juneau has Douglas because of the Bridge. Ketchikan would be great with a bridge.
Great Article this is exactly how we all feel in Ketchian.
    Thanks for the Article
