What a great response to the "Bridge to Nowhere" debate..the citizens of Ketchikan should be proud of their new Mayor and sad that their Governor can't stand behind them on this issue..

Who cares about ONE bridge? There are thousands of bridges in America that need replaced or structually fixed. Why take the money it would cost to build one bridge, for one community, when you can take that same money and upkeep the ones we have already built. Pass a levy, raise bond money, there are many ways for this town to get there bridge without the federal govt. being involved. Prove to be smarter than your governor Alaskans.

i dont agree with you at all! The war is not "useless" plus all the things you said about palin were untrue and immature! If you not going to say anything nice or true then DONT say anthing at all! Yeah, there are somethings i don't agree with her with but there is no need to act like a little kid and call her names!

i like how we have begun to replace racism with politicism.. who cares of somebody is liberal or conservative.. unless you know the person, you make yourself look like an ignorant racist to bemoan their ideals.. I have friends on both sides of the fence, and both are equally intelligent, however they have different ideals.. remember way back in the day when america was to be the land of the free? damn i miss that place... scratch that, I guess I never lived in that place, but it might be cool to see another country do what we never could so at least we know its possible, even though we suck too much to look past our own fear and have an intelligent debate instead of just bashing people for thinking differently...

so only the educated voted for bush TWICE prior? Big government? what have we had along? we need effective government, not all these special intertest groups and lobbiests. McCain has no intentions of regulating what needs to be regulated as big brother takes care of one another. hes too old to change his ways now and knows nothing but the bush ways. We have bridges falling and need to repair them before building bridges to no where. I may be cheaper to move the airport to the mainland as this is an area of no room to expand. Big oil has always been behind this bridge. build it and they will come. why do you think stevens was so bent on getting this bridge built? oil/$$/greed.

Alaska receives the most federal dollars per capita than any other state in the union. Perhaps an audit of these funds and allocation of money would be in order. Your governor should be the one to campaign for this proper allocation. Opps! Your governor is campaigning for herself as vice president. Too bad for you.

I lived in Ketchikan in the early 1970s and one had to ride the Grumman Goose(afloat plane) to Annette Island to be able to fly on a jet plane to wherever. The airport on Gravina Island was built after I moved back to interior Alaska, and the ferry service provided transportation to and from Ketchikan. The present mayor of the city has written a very complete and heartfelt letter regarding the issue of "the bridge" and I feel that he is correct in his comments. Ketchikan has 32 miles of road running from north to south. That's it. Of course there are city streets, but they only connect to other small city streets. It was a very warm and friendly town to live in. The tourists that visit there often come back to savor the small town atmosphere and warmth that Alaska's small towns have to offer. I firmly believe that access to Gravina Island needs to be strongly considered both by the federal and state government. With the death of the logging industry, it seems like tourism is one of the few occupations available unless one is already in possession of a fishing permit. That's another story!!

charge a docking fee of one dollar for each person on the ships and charge each plane that lands on the runway 25 dollars and then you can build your own bridge to the airport in one year and have funds to maintain. just please build the bridge to blend in to the landscape and look natural so land stays beautiful

just so you know.. ALL media is a stinking joke these days, it is all politically driven, no matter which wing of the media you waste your time reading.. we will most likely never get out from under the bs that our media, and political system has become, so there it is..

And just exactly how have they been getting to & from this other island for the past thirty years. Apparently not having a bridge hasn't stopped them from getting their.

Oil King, The only way we're going to get reps that represent us rather than special interests is TERM LIMITS. Why can a president like Reagan be effective? It's because he knows he has 4 or 8 years to make his mark on the world. Congressmen are only thinking about what will keep them in office for the next term or for the next 40 years. Congress will never do anything for the good of the people as long as they need to cater to what's popular, so they don't fall out of favor and lose their throne. If they had 4 or 12 years max, they'd start thinking about how they could leave the country better, so the history books treat them more kindly. Still selfish, but at least the people they are supposed to represent benefit, as intended.

Alaska seems to be the forgotten state. Out of sight out of mind. Hopefully with senator Palin being put in the fore front can put Alaskan concerns in the fore front too. Some thing. Alaska, remember that big state up north? Yes it is part of the United States too and they have needs as well. Maybe we just don't hear about it on the new unless it's really bad?
