Let's get real, here. The complaint these people seem to have, is that , when the airport was built, they were promised a bridge that was never built. It would be there 24/7, in any weather, which is pretty chancy aroung Ketchikan. They don'[t just want an easy run to the airport, though I certainly would; they want someplace to grow. Remember that this city was begun when the only way in or out of Alaska was by sea, and fishing was a major imeans of survival. They aren't demanding so much in a time when a Congressman can demand that the DOD perform a study of whther or not the Aurora Borealis could be used as an energy source!

Give them a fricken bridge! And I think that phrase "Bridge to Nowhere" was not meant in a nefative way, but rather it meant, there is no bridge to get anywhere. And so I support giving Alaska a bridge. I live in the Bay area, and they are forever building on ramps to highways, millions are spend on improvements., I have never heard Alaska ever speak up for anything. They are rarely in the news., atleast this country can do is give them a bridge.

In my 70 years on this planet I've never heard a more ludicrous one liner as the bridge to nowhere. Just how many bridges to somewhere started out as bridges to nowhere? It's about time our population wises up and screws their head on straight. We need our elected reps to run this country for the good of it's people NOT for the good of the media, politicians, ceo's, wall street hedgers, lobbyists, experts, etc. One of the most moving times in my life was when Regan got elected. It did not take very long for the complexion of every day life to change for the positive , you could tell it by how many jokes all of a sudden became a daily occurrance; the people were happy again. Quit pointing fingers at one another for no good reason; what's right is right and what's wrong is wrong. Build bridges to some where, not no where.

As for you bridge I don't care, earmarks are about 18 billion a year, most are for good causes, like studying fruit flys to understand autism, we spend more than that in 2 months in Iraq, John Mccain and his anti earmark campain are a joke, and so is your Govener, I hope you get her back because she is not honest and is not qualified to be president. John Mccain's war in Iraq has cost us more American lives than 911, and the more than 1 trillion dollars could have built alot of needed bridges, hospitals, roads, or maybe we would be kicking ass in Afganistan, you know Afganistan, the place where Bin Ladin and his group of evil doers planed and trained for 911, we have been at war for more than 7 years and our troops have been streached way too thin, We should have never gone, Obama was right about that,. So I hope you get your Govener back in 11 days.

Comment: I got it! Pudden needs a place to land his plane when he rears his head out the window when he flys over Alaskentucky. Palin makes your state look like idiots for electing her dumb ass

I believe that this is another ploy to put a bad mark on McCain and Palin. Good try but I think it is not going to work. I believe being friends with terrist and radical people is far more worse and far more danagerous.

Kiffer is a good writer, and uses his skill to make some great points on behalf of his community and the rational behind the bridge. I think the citizens of Ketchikan are fortunate to have a major of such depth and reason.

Boy, what a lot of dumb comments! If you have ever flown into Ketchikan and had to take a boat across to get into town, then your comments would be justified. The comments are full of sound and fury, however, like most lower 48 people, they lack moral or ethical back bone.

    • Posted By: eguaschino @ 10/25/2008 4:23:20 PM

you need to be careful before you start throwing an entire group of people in one lump.. unless you have met everybody in "the lower 48" you should keep your comments to yourself

Well written piece and clearly there is more to the story that doesn't fit into a cute little label like "bridge to nowhere" but I'm wondering why they don't use the revenue that each resident gets from their natural resources to fund that bridge? None of the rest of us get paid to live in our states so why should we all pitch in to buy that bridge?

    • Posted By: olfroggy @ 10/25/2008 4:22:41 PM

Enter Your CommentI don't know what state you live in, but the rest of the people in this country have paid for interstate highways in your state which most of them will never drive on. also rail lines and airports in your state, many of the things you take for granted were funded by all the rest of the tax payers across the country. Alaska has only been a state short time in comparison to the rest of the states. Have you been to Hawaii? when you landed did you complain about landing in an airport paid for by everyone else? other roads in your state were paid for by residents of other towns, do they complain about you having good roads?

How can Governor Palin care about New England and the rest of the US when she doesn't care about her own state's needs. I feel for these people and your message is being heard.

As someone who lived in Ketchikan for eight years I wonder where littledogs got his info. The Ketchikan International Airport, served by Alaska Airlines and numerouse commuter airlines has daily lights, not just eight per month.

Comment: Ketchikan is somewhere. The bridge to nowhere is from Kitchikan to nowhere (the freaking place were the the airport is located). People please do not comment on something you no nothing about. Palin and McCain are both Liars that stupid bridge put that stupid lady in the news and you all keep talking about her dumb ass.

You all should be proud to live in a small city with less growth, I live in a big city with open space vanishing to development, I will trade with you anytime!

The town obviously needs a bridge. this story explains what is wrong with the federal and state govenments. They take from Peter and give to Paul but never give to Peter. If they need the bridge whether mainlanders think so or not, they should have their bridge. Doesn't the water between the islands eventually freeze; which woul lead to problems in the winter? It is good to hear the truth. Governor Palin was insensitive to her voters. If she doesn't care about her state; then how can she care of people in New England, the South etc.

You may or may not agree with building the bridge, but you have to admit that it's pretty uncool for a politician to bash the people that made her on order to get ahead. This is a go-for-broke situation for Palin. She's slitting as many throats as she can, hoping to make it to Washington. She'll worry about the hometown consequences later if she doesn't win. Still, you shouldn't abuse your constituents just because they are so damn forgiving.
