The socialist and communist leaning Media (which includes Newsweek) continually hammers at Sarah Palin and yet we see nothing about the atrocities of Barrak Hussein Obama and Joe Big Mouth Bidin. One thing Americans (This would not include the patethic Liberal Democrats) is the constant unfair bashing of someone who does not deserve it. The backlash of this action in the voting booth will be tremendous. If Barrack Hussein Obama loses he can then blame Newsweek and their weak breathren.

Lucky, reporting the facts is not socialism, Palins past is catching up with her.

I think the press has been unbelievably lenient with Palin and McCain - they are clueless yet veryone seems to give them the benefit of the doubt. The republican base doesn't have a clue eitehr so I would expect them to swallow everything they say, but surely the press should be a little more discriminating.

Personally, I would check out whether this town needs a bridge or not. Funny how I find it hard to trust a politician's word. To JohnnyLover: You just can't fix stupid.

Who said 50 residents? The population stated in the article is 14,000; and Ketchican certainly isn't "nowhere" I think the people should get what they were promised 30 years ago. Bridges operate 24/7/365 whereas ferries have to rely on fair weather, etc. And in an emergency what happens when it isn't the ferry's scheduled run? or waiting for it to get back to dock, etc? I don't think Alaska has so many demands on the Union that it can't have its bridge. It is a major oil supplier, front guard against Russia, and vast natural resource reserve. Cut the people some slack.

No doubt your small town does need a bridge. Does the federal goverment really need to give what amounts to a $42,000 subsidy to each resident of Ketchikan to further your economic development? There are other areas of the country that have more people in them that could benefit from a $600 million infrastructure project. We live in a time where federal money is limited, and the government has do the most it can with limited resources. That does not include building expensive bridges to benefit a small town in Alaska.

Awesome article! The fact is all communities need a government that spends more wisely on its people and less on foreign "wars to nowhere" trying to force people into a capitalist, democratic, American ideology. Let's trim defense and black budgets and build more bridges across our great nation.

Why dont we as americans banned together and help each other. We dump billions of dollars into other counties all over the word but dont help our own this disgusses me. Lets keep some of that money at home, this bridge is a drop in the bucket to what we waste every year else where. Is anyone proud to be an american anymore. Darren Mitchell

    • Posted By: casylius @ 10/25/2008 3:43:59 PM

I am sure we are always proud to be Americans. There are plenty of things to fix in this country. We spent $10Billion per month in Iraq for the war that W led us in and McCain was cheerleading. We borrow the Chinese Gov and Arabs to fight a war that now the Chinese get the oil. Our children failed on math and science in school. Stop that war alone will save us our bacon. As for the bridge, perhaps build them a new airport next to Ketchikan for a much cheaper price.

Too bad you don't have a PGA golf course in Ketchikan ! They would build a 6 lane bridge to your town. (I've visited Ketchikan, Beautiful place ! )

  • Posted By: Twidget @ 10/25/2008 3:41:31 PM

Oh...where to start? Bill Clinton's use of "that woman" as in reference to whom, Hillary? The reason most visitors go there by cruise ships? They can't get there by plane! The 250,000 people that pass through the airport? Of course they do, why would they stop there, there's no bridge for them to go anywhere! Here's a GREAT slogan for them: "Ketchikan...IFyacan!" Sorry (well, no I'm not really) I just couldn't resist!

  • Posted By: rastamarley @ 10/25/2008 3:40:20 PM

But wait a minute...isn't it Governor Sarah Palin that stopped the bridge to nowhere? Palin is the one that decided, from what she claims, that she said "thanks but no thanks to the bridge to nowhere". Then, from what I understand, and which has never been disputed by the McCain/Palin campaign, she did actually receive the money, then spent it on other things in her State. So shouldn't Mayor Kiffer's beef be with his Governor, not with the American people or the press for using the "bridge to nowhere" as a punchline? I don't actually, see in the article above, that Kiffer has a beef with the American people regarding this, just that he is saying his town did need the bridge. I hope that, as the Mayor of Ketchikan, Kiffer has taken this problem up with the person who is responsible, right?

Thanks Mayor Kiffer for setting us all straight. It is always nice to hear the real story.

250,000 "pass through" the airport, this does not warrant a bridge. The ferry service would get absolutely crippled by a bridge, furthermore the bridge's repair costs would add to the state budget. Genius, we don't have enough money to maintain the roadways we have on land...so let's build a bridge which costs more to build and more in upkeep costs...a bridge doesn't stimulate and won't save an already failing economy.

maybe folks in the lower 48 should be glad no one had this attitude about the Golden Gate, George Washington, Brooklyn bridges. You just have to experience starting your travels by first taking a ferry then walking up a 8% incline walkway to get to the air[port. Or you can take a taxi ($$$$) which takes the same ferry across the sound!

I live near Seattle, Federal funds have helped our state build the I-90, I-520, hoods canal and the 2nd narrows bridge. For the 250,000 folks who use the airport on Galvania island and take the small boat to Ketchikan the bridge is not a waste it is something desperatly needed. I ask every American who has a road or bridge in their town that federal funds helped build to ask would the be better off without that bridge. Wasilla a small community with 5000 people have had federal funds helped builld roads, street lights in thier community supported by then Mayor now Gov Palin,. I guess in Gov Palin world if it is in my backyard (Literally) it is okay but no where else.

I've never been there but I think it could accomodate a reasonable return in the future, because as he said they then could grow their town on the island, more people would come to live and visit because there would be room for them. I'm in Las Vages and it's grown tremendously, I was in Arizona it's grown tremendously...if you build it they will come! - it's not just a corny line.

Well, this certainly put things in perspective regarding this bridge. Just the media still has not stated how big this bridge is. If it costs millions of dollars to build, it means this bridge is huge! I find it odd that this community needs Fed money to build this bridge, when Alaska should be making a lot of money off its oil. The question still remains whether this bridge benefits America as a whole to justify using Fed money to build it. I wish the best for this community, given their situation. It's just sad they built an airport on the other side of the waters from the community. Doesn't make sense.

    • Posted By: Chicazule @ 10/25/2008 3:35:21 PM

As stated in the article, the community of Ketchikan is at the base of mountains. There was no flat area big enough for an airport and the FEDS decided where the airport should be. The bridge was promised decades ago and put off repeatedly. And, BTW, the ferry is not cheap or free. Residents pay money for each ride, each car, each load of cargo. The airport is having trouble finding an airporter service who can make money with all the ferry fees so people with luggage, the elderly, handicapped, and folks traveling with children have a very difficult time walking the quarter mile from the ferry to the airport terminal. Also medivac flights are difficult when the ferry is off-line. If it were your loved one who needed emergency medical care, would you want to wait unti the ferry captain was out of bed and had driven back to town? Think about it.
