Here is a good reason why people are so cynical about politics. They twist the truth and will say almost anything to get elected. They spend most of their time telling lies, stretching the truth and telling you how bad the other person is. Maybe that is because they are good for nothing.

Why don't Alaskans just "pull together" and forego one year of their annual tax rebates, and apply that to fund the bridge?

  • Posted By: rowdyalaskan @ 10/25/2008 3:08:20 PM

Living in a neighboring community of Ketchikan, I cannot agree more with their new mayor. It has become normal to wait for the ferry to cross from town to the airport. How many other airports in this great country make their clients take a ferry? Hmmm. I didn't realize the gov't planned the airport on the other side of the narrows. That makes since. What community member would vote for that? How many bridges are in the US? Who paid to build them? The city, the state, or the gov't? I guess we Alaskan's are used to being last. Our gas prices at the pump are still the highest. We use what we have to make it work. The ferry we have, so we've made it work. I guess we'll continue to cross over on a ferry. It's ok with me. Kiffer is correct in saying we dont really appreciate the lime lite in a joke. Don't blame the republicans, I am one. So, buck up you liberals and leave our governor, the vice-presidencial candidate, to do her bidding for this great country like she has started for this state.

Thanks to Sarah's self-promotion everyone in Alaska looks like under-educated greedy morons. Sorry Ketchikan, I've been to your community and you really do need a bridge. Thanks for speaking up about who you are, where you are, and what you need.

Maybe it is time for a change - vote for Obama!

What a wonderful article! You go, Ketchikan under your newly elected major! (Wish Kiffer were running instead of Palin.)

A Pennsylvania lawsuit alleging that Barack Obama is not a ???natural-born citizen??? of the United States took an unusual twist this week, after a federally mandated deadline requiring Obama???s lawyers to produce a ???vault??? copy of his birth certificate expired with no response from Obama or his lawyers.

The lawsuit, filed by former Pennsylvania Deputy Attorney General Philip J. Berg ??? a self-avowed supporter of Hillary Clinton ??? alleges that Barack Obama was born in Kenya and is thus ???ineligible??? to run for president of the United States. It demands that Obama???s lawyers produce a copy of his original birth certificate to prove that he is a natural-born U.S. citizen.

Berg's suit and allegations have set off a wave of Internet buzz and rumors, though Obama could easily have put the matter to rest by providing the federal court with the basic documentation proving he is eligible to take the oath of a president. But Obama has apparently decided to deny the court and the public that documentation.

The Constitution provides that any U.S. citizen is eligible to become president if the person is 35 years of age or older and is a natural-born citizen; that is, born in the territorial United States.

By failing to respond to the Request for Admissions and Request for the Production of Documents within 30 days, Obama has ???admitted??? that he was born in Kenya, Berg stated this week in new court filings.

We hope you get your Governor back very soon (Nov. 5th would be cool)...we can get on with our lives minus all the crap she spouts. She'll build the bridge for you...she said that, didn't she to Congress?

Is John McCains experience 30 yrs?, or 1 yr repeated 30 times over?!

Palin likes to throw around accusations of "socialism". What she doesn't like to point out is that the lower 48 subsidize Alaskans to the tune of over $5000 per capita. In other words, Alaskans pay a little over $2000 per person in federal taxes, but because of pork kings Ted Stevens and Don Young, they take home over $7000 per person in federal pork. Talk about "spreading the wealth around."

Repubs love to accuse others of income re-distribution, but they love to dip into the federal tax trough and eat away.

Interesting what some read into this article. For me, I appreciate that it finally sets the record straight. I'd be interested to know which local towns in the US buy bridges for themselves without any federal or state highway dollars? And for those of you referring to Alaska as a welfare state, keep in mind that in my region the US chose to retain ownership of 90% of the available land. As for all those wealthy fishermen? Most live in the lower 48 and come up here to make their money. That's been a part of this state's history for over 100 ears. Finally and I speak as a 4th generation member of a commercial fishing family- yes the season is anywhere from 5 month to just a few weeks. But you work your butt off the rest of the year keeping your boat afloat, keeping your gear in working order and using your rapidly dwindling profits to pay for it all while you support your family.

Hello from a citizen of 'Nowhere'. Just a few bits of information everyone should be aware of. Palin said no to Ketchikan's bridge, but the one connecting Anchorage across the Knik arm to Palin's hometown of Wasilla is marching forward. It's called Don Young Way and it is being built for the bargain price of $600 million. Interesting, huh?

I have used the Ketchikan airport often. It is well-linked to the city by a frequent boat acrss the very narrow channel. It's a system that works well and is quite cheap to operate. But hey, the biggest welfare recipient in the country, Alaska, want us to pay for a bridge - so that they can have room to build McMansions and strip malls. The mayor in effect says that. You want a bridge, pay for your own bridge - maybe those developers would like to kick in a little.

Are there any McCain-Palin supporters who retain any objectivity, who are able to limit their biased / prejudiced thinking and rationally evaluate and recognize the desperate and low-class, unconscionable and dishonest efforts rendered by their candidates? To continue to support them, like Bill O???Reilly, Russ Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Elisabeth Hasselbeck, seems to demand a real questioning of the intelligence and conscience of the supporters. The obvious absurdity and blatant dishonesty of McCain???s and Palin???s behavior seems to literally challenge supporters to remain loyal in spite of insulting them with despicable and irrational self-focused behavior. The McCain-Palin campaign has become ridiculous and obnoxious with undisciplined self-concerned behavior that takes politics to a new low. To remain tolerant and supportive of that would have to reflect on anyone???s self-respect and self-esteem. If not McCain-Palin supporters, at least everyone else should reject their performance as you can???t trust them to do anything about the significant problems and real needs we face today because McCain and Palin clearly demonstrate they think everything is just about them. McCain just wants to be president before he retires and Palin simply wants all of the attention she can get and that is obviously where it is at for them. We have seen this mentality before and more of the same is really not acceptable.

I recall an early article that stated Ketchikans population as much less than it actually is, But this is just another example of how politics can get in the way of reality.
But you might rethink that "service economy " Mr. Mayor When all the 14,000 residents are real estate and banking or healthcare providers and you still have no source of income to the area and the population is simply exchanging services things are not likely to be any better.
The economic crisis of the whole country is proof positve it doesn't work for the majority.
Eventually a few will have all the cash, and you will need more than a bridge to survive

You know, If Palin had stood up and said "Yes, I support the Bridge to Nowhere because..." and then gave all the arguments the Mayor of Ketchikan just presented, I would have admired her balls. Instead, she tried to pretend that she didn't support it, instead of standing up for her decision and explaining why it was right.

Palin is full of lies. And guilty ethics violations for abuse of power. Why did she abuse power? Was it because she wanted more for Alaska, or because she gave political favors to people who actually contributed to society in some way? No, she abused her power to GET EVEN with her former brother in law.

    So petty.

Palin should be given kudos for nixing this sorry excuse of a waste of 400 (not 200) million dollars. Instead she's been bruised and battered for rightfully saying NO. There is no excuse for a 400! million dollar bridge for a 5 minute ferry ride. Sorry. There is just no reason to borrow more money for something that isn't a necessity at this point. And sadly there never will be a need for a bridge. It's so laughable to see how people try to justify a reason to attack the right when there clearly is a problem with this type of logic. Newsweek once again making itself look silly. Please wipe the egg off of your face and do your diligence. This Bridge is a complete waste of money and I for one applaud Palin for saying NO! No to earmarks and special projects. This is the kind of leadership needed in the white house to say sorry, this isn't important we have a budget to keep and right now we're in the red. If and when we have a surplus again we will re-evaluate the situation. The ferry runs every half hour in the winter and every 15 mins in the summer time. Seriously for a 5 min. ferry ride? You people have to be joking right?

check your fact, gov. palin wasn't the one to pull the plug on this, congress did, Palin is distorting this fact along with many others, That woman can't be trusted and lies either by twisting the facts or leaving certain areas out. Poor Mccain is probaly rethininking his choice.
