Dave Kiffer is a Democrat that is running against represenative Don Young He is a freelance writer. I'm sure he must be an Obama supporter.

    • Posted By: Alaskan23 @ 10/27/2008 1:28:55 AM

Well, Wolf, that's completely false. What else are you making up?

      • Posted By: Wolf Wolfman @ 10/27/2008 8:34:20 AM

Excuse me. I was wrong. He's a Republican that supports Palin.

        • Posted By: Chicazule @ 10/27/2008 10:29:26 AM

Actually, it's Mark Begich of Anchorage who is running against Don Young. Since it clearly says at the bottom of the essay "Dave Kiffer is the newly elected Mayor of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough" it's pretty clear that the wolfman can't read. That would explain a lot of his posts! BTW, the mayoral election in Ketchikan is non-partisan so our candidates don't have to declare a party or make it known who they are going to vote for. You could not be more wrong!

What Dave is not telling you is that the water the bridge is intended to cross is the Tongass Narrows, the most valuable natural resource the economy of Ketchikan has. Building a bridge across it would inhibit cruise ship traffic, prompting the ships to by pass Ketchikan and ground our fleet of seaplanes that are another big economic engine for Ketchikan. The bridge was nothing but a short term "big dig" for the economy which would leave us with nothing in the long run. If anyone wants to really understand this project they have to really read the Gravina Access Project Report. There is no infrastructure on Gravina Island other than the Airport and other entities that have been approached about developing on Gravina, like the Alaska prison system have given a flat "NO" to the idea. We have a perfectly serviceable ferry system that has been used in-spite of being undermined by the local press and politician for 30 years. It is the ferry that needs the investment of additional development funds to enhance the economy of Ketchikan, not building an obstruction across the main economic engine of the town.

    Hello,
I did not have time to read everyones comments but have read quite a few. It seems that the majority of what I have read are not happy about the bridge and Palin is taking a beating for this. I have to say in my eyes that Palin is the esccape goat for you as she was not governor when that $ for the bridge did get passed through and nor was she in the Senate. She however happended to get elected into office after it had been passed. I'm not sure if it is true or not as I did not hear it with my own ears that Gov. Palin prior to being elected was for the bridge and then changed her mind and was not for the bridge. What I thought I heard from her was not that she was 'not' for the bridge but that she was 'not' for the money that was ear marked to be paying for it. She never did say 'No' to the brige she said that if the bridge was built we (I took that as Alaskans) would do this on our own (meaning that she was not for the ear marked $$ that was funded). Perhaps she realized the majority of the people she talked to localy were not for the bridge, or that with all the huge crewships and the hundred of float planes that also use the same strip of ocean to take off and land in (not to mention the fishing industry both commercial and sport in addition to personal boats) the bridge is going to have to be how high?? and the trafic on the water will be inhibited by how much?? I see it as a disaster waiting to happen. Which also brings up a question...how much will the maintance cost be for this? As Ketchikan has tons of rain in addition ocean water (salt) so that mean higher amount of corosion, has anyone looked into the maintanance cost $$$$ ? Seem to me you could beef up that ferry ride that takes you across the channel to the airport or to Ketchikan far less than what the bridge and the maintance would cost and be a heck of a lot more affordable. There are other Island in the U.S. that do communte this way and it works....so could you not just incorporate at a much lower cost then it would be to put the bridge in to up your ferry system that is already working? People could still get to and from the airport, their house, their job, a business. I didn't really get a feel that the majority of Ketchikan is for that brige. It just so happened to have some voiceteress people that spoke up about it. I think if you were to dived that $$$ that was designated for the bridge to locals you would probable never hear a complaint about having to use the airporter ferry system that does currently only leave every half hr from each direction (during the winter) or every 15 min (during the summer) to take you on the 3-5min ride across the channel. From what I can recall the bridge has been shot down by the majority of the locals but there seems to be a few that want to keep pressing the issue. In the end about all the Palin stuff (to say it nicely) it really comes down to that she was not part of this whole bridge $$ being appropriated, however

    • Posted By: NativeAKer @ 10/27/2008 2:50:35 PM

Gov. Palin did not say no to the money, she took the funds elsewhere in Alaska. Could it be to fund the New Ferry for the Knick Arm, that is being built right now At the Alaska Ship and Drydock in Ketchikan? Or possibly the new proposed 600 million dollar bridge across the Knick Arm? Of course those two forms of transportation would get traffic to Wasilla a little faster.
How many ferries in service are affected by the tides? If the tides are too low an ambulance can not go to Ketchikan Internation Airport on the ferry to catch a Medivac flight. They would have to go by Helicoptor. If there was an emergency and more fire trucks had to respond to it and there was low tides they could not get there. No one can understand these frustration and all the pressure a person goes thru unless they have experienced them.
The monies that Gov. Palin took from us should have at least went into our Alaska Marine Highway System which the whole Southeast Alaska depends on for our road system. They have to charge so much to our users of the system many can not afford to utilize it. We can not drive over water. We find very limited access to the lower 48 especially in the winter months, when they layup half the fleet. Not only to maintenance but to the budget. It hurts our Economy in Southeast Alaska. All of our prices are over the top and going up all the time. Today our Gas price is $4.17 per gal. for unleaded. Over a $1.00 more than else where. We rely on the AMHS to be our Highway for our Vans that are trucked with the necessaties of every day life. Gov. Palin has treated us in the Southeast like evil step-children, everything is slowly moving to Anchorage, it's their way of moving our capital. Before we know it Southeast Alaska will be a ghost Coast up and down. Gov. Palin could have kept some of the monies here to boost the Economy with a thriving AMHS keeping the cost to operate down by volumn sales for travel, more residents in jobs with AMHS fueling each town with more revenue. Oh my'!, maybe even some new business's to put more people to work. By closing and limiting our AMHS is like closing the Glen Allen Highway for 3-4 days a week year around. Or better yet The 405 freeway to San Diego in rush hour everyday. For a family to take the Ferry to Beliingham Wash. Would cost $3000.00 + to do. For us to take the ferry to Ketchikan International Airport with our Vehicle is $22.00 round trip if travel is done on the same day, if not you have parking and an additional $10.00 for the 2 passengers if at a later date. Heaven forbid if the plane doesn't make it in because you get to pay again to get to the plane later. So it cost us alot more than time and money to get off our Island. I am a Native Alaskan I have lived in Ketchikan for 50 years, most of my adult life I have waited for our bridge or a federally funded Ferry system to be our highway off of Revillagedo Island.

Well mayor, maybe you should hold your governor accountable for this. She helped politicize it. Now, you don't have a bridge do you.

    • Posted By: Chaz33 @ 10/27/2008 2:40:09 PM

You should have got the bridge. You got the money, but instead of a bridge, it was spent on other things that you prabaply didn't need. Your Governor let you down. You could have used that bridge when, according to Palin, she plans for Alaska to take in all the Americans fleeing the End Of TImes after McCain looses it and pushes the button. I have news for Palin. ALASKA is where the first missiles will hit. America is not going to elect an angry old fool and give him control over 5000 nuclear missiles. McCain acts like he has a score to settle with the rest of the world. He can't have a conversation without getting angry. When asked a question he doesn't like, he starts twitching and repeating the standard talking points. Who gives a damn about his war record, which by the way was a complete failure? He enlisted, got shot down, got captured and then made propaganda films for the enemy.
We need someone who can think and come to logical conclusions before acting. McCain just shoots from the hip.

THE ISSUE HERE IS NOT ABOUT A BRIDGE. THE ISSUE IS ABOUT ELECTING A TERRORIST HUGGING BACKROOM CHICAGO POLITICIAN TO THE HIGHEST OFFICE IN THE LAND. WHEN OBAMA IS THROUGH SELLING OUT OUR COUNTRY THIS BRIDGE WILL BE THE LAST THING WE WILL BE DISCUSSING.

      • Posted By: Hunterbetts @ 10/25/2008 9:44:37 PM

FURTHER TO THAT. DUE TO ALL OF OBAMA'S PAST ASSOCIATIONS, HE WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED ENTRY TO EITHER THE FBI OR THE CIA, BUT BECAUSE OF A FLAW IN OUR GOVERNMENTS CRITERIA OBAMA IS ALLOWED TO BE IN CHARGE OF THESE SECURITY ORGANIZATIONS! OF COURSE OBAMA WILL BE HAPPY TO SIT DOWN WITH ALL OF OUR COUNTRY'S ENEMIES WITHOUT PRE-CONDITIONS. HE WILL MOST LIKELY CONVEY OUR INNER MOST SECRETS TO THEM. WOE IS US!

I have an idea! If you need the bridge so badly, why don't you pay for it yourselves. You have all those petrodollars in the State of Alaska that you have taxed away from the oil companies; use some of it to pay for your necessary infrastructure. My state, Indiana, paid for essentially ALL of its basic infrastructure originally without federal assistance; i.e. roads, highways and bridges were built long before federal excise taxes.

So because I'm not going to vote for a communist it makes me a racist perhaps your a racist for not voting for a white guy. Everyone has this opinion that if they don't vote for a black communist then they are racist. People need to stop thinking about what other people think and think about what is right. And if this makes me Racist then I would be proud to wear the WHITE HOOD OF FREEDOM

    • Posted By: bgerard2 @ 10/26/2008 4:00:28 AM

too have been called a "racist" because I personally abhor Obama, not for his color but for his politics, beliefs and associations which contrary to the spin doctors ARE IMPORTANT in a presidential candidate as they often indicate poor judgment. Never mind that I equally disdain and abhor Nancy Pelosi, Chuckie Schumar, Diane Feinstein, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Al Gore, Barbara Boxer & Barney Franks. The last of which I was accused once of being both a "homophobe" and a "bigot" because it happens that ol' Barney is gay. Never mind that his roommate was running a male prostitution ring out of their high-dollar townhouse (of course Barney knew nothing). Never mind that Kennedy and a friend swam to safety after drowning poor Mary Jo & hid out for over 24hrs before reporting it. Or their anti-gun stances and attacks on the very constitution of the United States, especially the Second. Forget their push towards socialist & communist "redistribution of the wealth" & nationalizing our nation's health-care system & even our oil industries (sound like a 3rd world country yet? the new Amerika?). Oh & I left out Billary Clinton! To the very narrow-minded left-wing folks I am a woman-hater,a homophobe & I hate gays, I also am a racist & blah..blah..blah...NEVER MIND the actual politics & the loony-tunes or blatantly unAmerican things that these people that I just named have done and voted for! Never mind the issues! Or our nation's great heritage.

I even get accused of being a "Rush Limbaugh" mouthpiece & it been years since I listened to him. I don't listen to the radio in my truck. I like to hear myself think. I usually reply that "Well you are a Michael Moore or Al Franken clone!" & that really ticks 'em off (They usually fancy themselves more of a George Clooney type aka: Michael Moore Lite -the less greasy, less slovenly and better looking version of the same left-wing wacko:^).

Checkout this website compiled by The Catalogue For Philanthropy, is for real and NOT A HOAX (Google It!). http://micurl.com/43jq6m

One quickly concludes that for all the grandiose "redistribution of the wealth" programs that the left-wing socialist Democraps espouse and promote - that it generally means WITH OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY AND NOT THEIRS! Note that the poorest state (a Bush state) was also the most generous. Look at mASSachusetts! Almost dead last in 49th place. Home of John Kerry ain't it? And Ted Kennedy and Barney Franks. For the most part the more liberal that a state is and votes the cheaper the skates are! ROFL! It doesn't take a Rhode's Scholar to figure out that the Democraps are all full of that brown smelly stuff! Socialism sucks! And the left-wing rich stand to benefit from being the foxes in still more hen houses! Remember $700.00 hammers and $1,200.00 toilet seats? How much will 4 St. Joseph's baby aspirin 81mg cost in our new socialist Barack/Hillary style national health care plan? A hundred bucks? Yeah national health-care, that's the ticket!

If a project can???t stand by itself it doesn???t need to be considered. There are scores of toll bridges around the world that support and maintain themselves.

An examination of the Heritage Foundation???s database of the earmarks in the fiscal 2008 omnibus appropriations bill revealed the total number received by Presidential candidates from the Senate and House: Sen. This guy is no suvivalist, he is a user of the system. I sat next to him on a Delta flight from DFW to Anchorage in 1st class an he was more s*** faced than me. He was returning from a mayors conference in Florida in which the state with Fedral matching funds paid for his whole trip. He ended up in 1st class on that specific flight out of his own pocked. All this guy talked about was getting stoned and what a great pleasure it was being able to walk on the beach and piss in tha Atlantic Ocean

    • Posted By: Chicazule @ 10/27/2008 1:43:52 AM

You, sir, are dead wrong. Mayor Kiffer has only been in office two weeks and has not been to Florida or a Mayor's Conference. You can ask the Borough Clerk if you don't believe me.

If you lived in rainy Ketchikan, you would be a little strange too. K is a fishing town. Wild cold water ocean fishermen(and women) tend to be even a little more strange beause fishing is a very dangerous way of life. And what is wrong with p... in the Atlantic ?

If you live in Alaska long enough you'll become strange and different too. It why long termers tend to be more tollerant of people being different.

  • Posted By: kingr @ 10/25/2008 4:35:24 PM

This mayor Kiffer is a total joke. I sat next to this guy on a Delta flight form DFW to Anchorage, 1st class, he was returning from a mayor/conference somewhere on the east coast. The flight was delayed for DFW but we had already borded and were seated. In the 1 hour delay Delta kept on feeding us drinks and this guy was already s***faced when we sat down so he added fuel to the fire. He practically bragged about going on a fully funded (state/federal) boondogal, smoking pot, partying, and laying to claim that he stood on the beach and pissed in the Atlantic Ocean. If he reads this I hope replies back because that shows you the mentality of the voters in Ketchikan to keep putting this guy back in office. He is nothing but a user of the system, not a contributer to anything.

    • Posted By: Chicazule @ 10/27/2008 1:41:37 AM

Don't know who you sat next to, but Mayor Kiffer has only been in office two weeks and has never been to the Mayor's conference. Get your facts straight before you slander someone'e reputation!

  • Posted By: ChaoticEngineer72 @ 10/26/2008 2:19:41 AM

    Dear Mayor Kiffer,

After looking at views from Google Maps Satellite and seeing your town of Ketchikan, Alaska. I do beleive that the price for the bridge is to Expensive. Instead you should build a tunnel to Somewhere. Like the one from France to England. I think they call it the Chunnel (because of the metric system or something like that ) any who, if you build it I will gladly be the first to donate my time labor or money.

    Stay safe,
    Pat

    • Posted By: Alaskan23 @ 10/27/2008 1:26:21 AM

As part of this project, engineers hired by the state studied several bridges, 2 tunnels, ferries and a no-action alternative. The tunnel options were far more expensive than the bridges.

    i agree with wolf wolfman. except the obama osama comment. as much as i dislike obama i have to say that's obviously not true, though by the sound of his name you wouldn't know it. but i'm sure how we got to this but;
obama is socialist. or communist if you will. look at his veiws. spread the wealth. that's the start of all communist systems. it is a good idea, but never ever works out. it simply doesn't work. and it's certainly not suitable for the united states of america. people, not working, making money off of their laziness and inabillity to lift a finger for him/herself and him/her's family. it's ridiculous. that's what will happen. one man goes to work, works a 57 hour week. (i know a man like this) and one day, may make just as much as the lazy, ignorant man who refuses to pay his child support nor his bills. doesn't work, doesn't do anything, but still makes money for his LAZINESS. it's ludacrious. if barack hussein obama is elected as president i don't know what will happen. other than a huge decrease in our nations work force, because they don't need to because they'll be getting money for not working!!??? ridiculous! obviously nothing will get done. lazy people. nothing being done to increase the potential of our nation. also how does barack have any experience to do this job? on xm radio a host asked "give me one thing barack obama has done in his career to qualify himself to be the president?" out of everyone that called in (obviously only obama supporters called in) not one had an answer. "change change change. he's gonna change this he's gonna change that." but not a single person could say what he has done. he simply has a huge lack of experience. not to say the palin doesn't. but still. thankyou, connor

If I recall correctly Senator Obama briefly touched on earmarks in the 2nd Debate saying something about it's miniscule portion of the budget. Earmarks can be good things.

    • Posted By: Wolf Wolfman @ 10/26/2008 10:46:07 PM

Most, but not all, earmarks are wasteful spending. They are requested, not voted on. There are about 50 in Congress that do not request them. Obama cost us $1 million a day for earmarks while he was in the Senate. John McCain had zero earmarks, and does not request them.

  • Posted By: wsinsel @ 10/25/2008 8:31:50 PM

I sure do hope McCain does NOT get elected. Anyone that advocates the kind of reckless spending demonstrated by his running mate coupled with his terroristic tactics utilized throughout his campaign is certainly not someone I want to represent my country to the world. If Obama were elected it shows the world that this country is exactly what we have always said it was. If McCain is elected it proves to the world that this country is exactly what they have always said it was. McCain pushed my vote aside when he enlisted Palin, arguably the least informed and possibly the most bigoted, hypocritical candidate ever. Not to mention the fact that McCain did everything possible to incite fear and hatred with his negative campaign. If any harm should come to Obama it will surely be a result of the hatred and distrust dispensed by our war hero John McCain and he should be held personally responsible. This alone makes him unworthy of the office. Some hero he turned out to be. I agree, build your own bridge, you pay for it.

    • Posted By: Wolf Wolfman @ 10/26/2008 10:39:21 PM

I'll give you negative campaign, and you can't do anything about it, and it won't hurt McCain or Palin. Obama is associated with socialists, communists, Muslims, Israel haters, and criminals. Obama and Osama have one thing in common. They both have friends that bombed the Pentagon. Ayers bombed the Pentagon, and Osama's friends flew an airplane into the Pentagon. So there, how do you like those apples?

Don't go after her while she's huntin' moose or baby ducks, though. She'd shoot back sure as hell. • Posted By: fpgonzo @ 10/26/2008 10:26:35 PM

Please explain...It is my impression that both funding for both the Ketchikan bridge and the Knik Arm bridge were earmarks contained within that huge transportation bill that Bush signed a few years ago, and both bridges were laughed out of existence by lower-48 public opinion, thus neither has been built. I'm not sure I know what you are referring to when you say that both bridges have been built.

  • Posted By: Kristin_Kay @ 10/25/2008 8:51:23 PM

I grew up in Ketchikan. Living there for 21 years, I had to take the ferry to the airport many times, it was never a big deal. But, this isn't a matter of the rich visiting their cottages, or of people dodging the law. I am disappointed that anyone would lash out to perfect strangers with such vicious claims in fact. The airport is the only way out of town, this is incredibly important if you want to seek a second opinion for your medical needs, or if you want to come home for Thanksgiving weekend. Really, I couldn't care less if the bridge comes, in fact, its been promised for many years, and nothing makes me think it will happen anytime soon. But- I hope that you do not use this as a platform to insult Alaskans, and I really hope that you don't instantly assume that it reflects what we ALL want, or think, or believe.

    • Posted By: Wolf Wolfman @ 10/26/2008 10:20:45 PM

Oh no,no, no. Kiffer is using it as a platform to promote "spread the wealth around"!

    • Posted By: Beargirl @ 10/25/2008 11:21:27 PM

It is not about the Bridge, it is not about insulting Alaskans. The issue is only being discussed because liberals think its another tool to bash Palin with. Its really not about Palin. Its about beating up republicans. If Palin wins, it will continue to be a sword for Liberals (with no real concern for Alaskans). If Palin loses, it will no longer be an issue.

This is true! It is such a double standard and I, for one, am sick of it. Why wasn't Ted Kennedy ever punished for rolling a car into the water, leaving the poor pregnant girl in the car and then fleeing the scene? And Barney Frank and his boyfriend, who is/was the head of Fannie Mae, when Barney Frank had oversight. Is that not a conflict of interest? Why hasn't Obama proven his citizenship, yet? Doesn't anyone care that his step-father gave up Obama's rights of citizenship to get him into an Indonesian school. Obama has the right to apply for re-instatement but never has. Sarah Palin is a true breath of fresh air. Plain spoken and true. She is being attacked because she scares the liberals into thinking that Obama may lose because of her. Ayn Rand was dead on with her books.

You might have a point about the bridge. But the only information about the bridge was spending $230million for a bridge for 60 people, & that isn't logical. And your govenor kept the money so why isn't she building the bridge if it's really needed? What is she using it for? She is runniing around the US, the country she wants to succeed from, instead of seeing to the people in Alaska's needs. Oh, & she isn't middle-class like she keeps telling everybody she-& her family-are when they have a net worth of 2.1 million dollars. And there's a question that she didn't provide all of the information about that, as she was required to run for office.

Wow, I missed this one, first time around. More crap from a liberal, that doesn't really give a d__, about the bridge, just had to get his licks in about Palin.

It's about time somebody FINALLY explained that these projects are NOT "bridges to nowhere", a phrase coined by a comedian who'd never been anywhere NEAR Alaska, and who knows NOTHING of our economic realities. I know good people in Alaska disagree about the bridges, their necessity, their cost, etc., however many other coastal communities (Kodiak, Dutch Harbor, Juneau) , and even some of the inland villages (Selawik) exist intact because of their over-water bridges. The only thing that undermined these projects was outside publicity. Too bad Palin saw fit to allow this to influence her actions instead of inspiring her to come to their defense before the rest of the country.
