I was born, raised and lived all of my child hode in Alaska. Been to Anchorage, ran my fathers business in Juneau and Fairbank, spent summers in Delta and travild through many other parts of Alaska. I to have hunted, fish and trapped. I to played hockie for many years. Worked on the pipeline for 3 years. I would never call any place in the Great State of Alaska " no where ". How insulting....

You know it's that kind of backwards thinking that really irks me, people in Alaska are NOT ignorant in any sense of the word! Tell me how would you get to your local airport if it was located just across the pond from your town with NO possible or visible means of driving to it? What, would you suggest taking a raft? With all those people visiting each and every year to our beautiful state just to get away from the lower 48, deserve a better way to get from the airport to town just like any town in any of the other 48 states we are a part of.

As to if Gov. Palin spent the earmarked money on something else, in my opinion she shouldn't have if you are given money for a specific reason to be used on something specific, then that's what you should spend it on. Like if you have money set aside to pay the electric bill then that's what it should be spent on, not say for some other miscellaneous item you really didn't need, that's just bad budgeting. And if a govenor is doing that for just one state, could we then possibly assume that she might do that for the rest of the country?

And to my fellow Alaskans in Ketchikan, I say "Keep up the good work, and keep fighting to get that bridge."
That bridge that goes from a lonely airport to a gateway to the most awe inspiring place left on this planet!

I have heard that Alaska is awash in oil money. No income taxes. No property taxes. If the citizens of Alaska though this was such a great project, there is plenty of money to fund it. But it is so much easier if your Senator can get the rest of us hardworking taxpayers to fund your project. You should be ashamed of your greed!

    • Posted By: akresident @ 10/26/2008 1:21:47 AM

JEFKO: WE PAY TAXES ARE YOU A COMPLETE MORON..... We pay federal taxes, we pay sales tax, we pay phone tax, we pay income tax, we pay property tax, we pay taxes on the ferry ride, tabacco tax, gas tax, alcohol tax, and part of our dividends pay for the Medical and public assistance, Legislative appropriation of convicted and incarcerated felon and misdemeanant dividends, and alot of taxes you don't know anything about due to your State of you State. Get the windex and a squeegee clean the glass windowectomy for I'd hate for you to bump your head on the wall. I've said it before and I'll say it again, do your research before you open your mouth and insert your foot. You had better realize the financial state of My State before you start talking about how you support me and mine.

If you've never been to Ketchikan, or don't live in Alaska, you don't have a clue as to how badly this community needs that bridge. This quaint little town contains much of Alaskas History and has a serious amount of visitors throughout the year. Most come aboard Alaska cruises because of the inconvenience of flying into a small tic-y-tac airport service by Alaska Airlines only. I'm sure with all th eoutdoorsman and fisher-people that swarm there duiring th evarious 'seasons, there will be more air sewrvice available if th ecity has a chance to grow to its full potential. Currently, the airport depends on about a 12 car (or two truck) ferry to get to and from the 'city'. It's a damn shame they're being treated in this manner, they don't deserve it, they deserve that bridge.

has palin forgotten her own state during campaigning? our state should not be forgotten due the rigors an election.

Where are the stories on Obama, he is the superstar . The media needs to do the job!!. Who the hell cares about the bridge or the road to nowhere. enough is enough!. America does not know anything about Obama still ,besides that he walks on water. Come on newsweek ,MSNBC AND NBC. Do your job!!. Lets see somethings Obama did ,lets see some answers to his pass. His own party is not even sure about him. Tried of reading these half truth and fiction stores about McCain and Palin. I have never seen one woman be attacked everyday from the media so much in life. OBAMA WANTS TO BE THE LEADER OF OUR COUNTRY ASK HIM ABOUT EARMARKS ,ASK HIM SOMETHING!. What a sad way this election has been handled by the media.

I see a simple way to fix this... The federal government can match funds with the residents of Ketchikan. For a modest fee of $14,214.30, each resident can then share in the ownership of the bridge, which, by saving the residents the costs of taking the ferry, should pay for itself in no time. Then, you can turn it into a toll bridge to help pay for maintenance. Of course, it would be unfair to charge the residents TWICE for the use of the bridge, so they would of course use it for free. I'm sure the tourists would gladly pay to rent a car so they can pay the toll to drive across the bridge. Better yet, each rental could be increased with a free one way pass across the bridge. You'd pay to return of course, otherwise, you'd have to take the ferry...

Every American has the basic right to an infrastructure that is suited to their needs. If the town needs a bridge, they should get a bridge. I'm saying build a multi-million dollar, record-breaking example of man's acheivements, just put up a simple bridge. I live in West Virginia. Believe me whan I say that I can understand the frustrations of those living in a small town that needs a bridge. They have just started the process of building one here and we've been told that it will take 25 years to build that bridge. Government studies have to be done on feasibility and environmental safety and la-de-freakin-da. Meanwhile I have to drive thirty minutes out of my way to get across the Ohio River and that's if the two lane road the government calls a highway isn't closed due to a land slide or a car accident or anything else. Try getting your child to the closest hospital when that happens. I understand that small towns don't have the same needs as large urban areas, but that doesn't mean that our needs are any less important just because we don't have a large population. We pay our taxes and are entitled to the same services as everyone else.

You People are a bunch of inconsiderate ASS HOLES if Alaska needs a bridge there is no reason in the world that they can't have one. I live in Missouri I have never been to Alaska but I know here in the "Lower 48"
that they will build a bridge right freaking next to another bridge simply so you don't have to wait an extra 10 minutes to go to work because were all so !@#$ing Impatient. I say if Alaska needs a bridge to simplify there life, help with medical needs, and save the people in Alaska $40 per day then they should start that project tomorrow. If someone were to die or have a baby in the cold down here because there's no bridge, then someone's ass would be in a sling but in Alaska it's ok and that's a bunch of B.s.

Mayor Kiffer, Thanks for setting the record straight on what the bridge is and why it was ever conceived. It's too bad your legislators could not have presented the need in a plain and common terms that you just did. I feel for you and your fellow Alaskans under the would be Queen of the Universe. I think your governor and her husband have never had anyone but their own self serving interest in mind.

Here is a good title for a book if Obama wins: "How Obama lied and cheated his way into the presidency"'.
One could add: "with the aid of the disgraceful media".

I would just like to point out democrates are not historically known to take what is not rightfully theirs.

      • Posted By: xnavyproud @ 10/26/2008 12:57:34 AM

That's possibly true. They just write new laws to make it rightfully theirs. In my mind, the yellow dog Democrats have criminal minds. Someone should take a poll of all of our prisoners to see if they lean one way or the other.

  • Posted By: somewhere @ 10/26/2008 12:54:28 AM

BTW, being pro-bridge is not synonymous with being anti-Palin.

  • Posted By: olfroggy @ 10/25/2008 5:07:51 PM

Seems most of these comments are about using federal funds for projects in alaska, ok, let's not do it and while we are at it saving money, let's quit funding all the highways in other states because most of us don't use them, and we don't use most of the bridges in other states either. When the old highways need repair, use your own money to fix them. As for those of you that don't live near an ocean, no more fish for you to eat, and unless you raise your own beef, we canot spend money on highways to get that beef from where it's grown and sent to your area. Some of you don't realize how much of my taxes go for things where you live. we can just do away with all federal spending and then we can cut taxes down to almost nothing. When that hurricane or tornado hits, don't expect any help from Uncle Sam either. you need to save your money so when that emergency hits YOU can take care of it. Whyt should my tax monies be used to help you out?
some people need to get real and realize that we all help each other whether we want to or not

    • Posted By: thechef1955 @ 10/25/2008 5:15:50 PM

      To; olfroggy,

You are very, very right with all of the aspects of your statement Sir, but what had been left out is "How the earmark has been handled by our national leaders? These people knows better than us of what had really transpired out there. I wish you were not be in their position in the near future.

      • Posted By: Wolf Wolfman @ 10/26/2008 12:46:19 AM

Earmarks that are not voted on, and are wasteful spending, are good, right?

    • Posted By: Wolf Wolfman @ 10/26/2008 12:44:13 AM

"Spread the wealth around" like Marx said, right?

  • Posted By: gech @ 10/25/2008 5:09:31 PM

It always amazes me when politicians and reporters lie to suit their own positions.
A promised bridge is now a bridge to nowhere. When did an airport become nowhere?
Palin seemed qick to brag she stopped the bridge. But if what this newsweek article states is true then
she is worse than those who appeared to want abridge to nowhere. Though you never know what the truth really is as long as reporters want to report and politicians want to pomtificate.

    • Posted By: Wolf Wolfman @ 10/26/2008 12:40:53 AM

The bridge earmark is over, finished, done. You're wasing your time.

  • Posted By: NiqueD @ 10/26/2008 12:38:50 AM

1.) NeoCons are uneducated ignorant people and in no way represent the true conservatives of America who are now called "liberal" by the NeoCons who also out and out labeled McCain as a liberal 8 years ago in their fanatical ignorant support of the Anti Christ GW Bush so it's not suprising whatever they post on the blogs. What is suprising is that people of such limited intelligence and reasoning ability are able to figure out how to turn on a computer and post. Wonders never cease.

2.) To the Mayor. If every town in America got what they wanted this would be Fantasyland not America. The price of that bridge was nowhere justified by the expense vs the number of people who would benefit by it regardless of how nice of people you may be.

3.) The money was taken and spent elsewhere by Madam Herr Palin. If you had the nerve and the dishonesty to take the money, you should have used it for what it was earmarked for.

4.) And honest person would never have taken the money and then told the American people you "stopped the bridge". That's the same thing as saying you stopped a thief who was black from stealing your big screen but neglect to mention that a white thief stole your big screen. Stealing is stealing.

  • Posted By: nonamenm @ 10/26/2008 12:37:39 AM

Very well stated. This is exactly the kind of information that should have been brought to light in the first place. Unfortunately the bridge became a political football and then a buzzword and the people of Ketchikan suffered so various people could advance their personal agendas. Hopefully we can learn from this and realize that we are all Americans no matter what state we live in or how big a town we come from.

Kiffer must be a Dem. Right? May be the left would have you be their "Joe the Plumber". Good try! Suggest you call Obama media to run full steam with this.

Kiffer, you must be a Dem. Right? The left may be wanting you to be "Joe the Plumber' of the Republican party. Good try.

Good Point - and hope that you eventually get your deserved Bridge; just do us a Favor - Keep Palin!
The best folks from Alaska are those who not only know the Real Facts - about the changing Climate, etc. - but who also Love Mother Nature enough to do more than just say that they care about Her, by also taking BOLD Actions to put their money where their mouths are, in Her Defense.
Stop 'Drill, Drill, Drilling;' like the Saudis, you've made your Money, O' Alaska - now Invest some of it in Geothermal, or Wave/Tidal Power - you have plenty of both of those too. There's enough Energy in a One Meter Wide section of a Kodiak Island Wave to power 6 or 7 1200w Electric Space Heaters!!!
Lay No More Pipe! Or I'll no longer respect you, in the morning! (i.e.: Don't F**k us any more, You, You, You.....American OPECs!)
