    I had some, with real life experiences and observations that provided context, but DaneLover bored me with calling me a "fraud", questioning my patriotism, calling me a Leftist. Talking before demonizing and bombing should be enough of a lesson today if you could absorb it.

    Just looked at your prior postings. Could you please point out the ones of yours that "move us forward" or constitute "constructive thoughts"?

    There is no question that Bush has made mistakes - namely - not dis-arming the entirety of Iraq & Afghanistan after the initial invasions until order could be restored, and not dis-arming and controlling the entire Middle East when the opportunity was at hand. But, given all of that, we must move forward - what Hitler did then and where really doesn't move us forward - do you have any constructive thoughts??

    I have a relative who supports McCain because he support's Bush's war in Iraq because he's killing those "Evil Muslims", and he's certain that nothing we're doing in Iraq increases the number of terrorists.

    I spent two months in mountain villages of North Africa in the '70s. There were no terrorists or American haters. Without exception they were pro America, fascinated with us. They couldn't have been more hospitable or generous, more so than any people I've ever seen anywhere.

    We should talk, and stop looking like, being nothing but arrogant bully occupiers. The Wahhabi's would have less to use to teach the poor and igorant to hate about us and be willing to kill themselves and their children to get to us. We could also give our allies reasons not to be scared like Hell of us.

    Or, we can continue to chant the neocon fantasies that Bush abdicated to, and keep doing the same thing.

      Do you really think diplomacy wasn't tried with Saddam Hussein by many others prior to Bush? Do you really think Obama's orator skills will make a difference to Iran, who is bent on having nukes and seeing Israel destroyed? What would you have done different in Iraq, give Hussein another 12 years to continue to play the corrupt UN like a bunch of fools? Obama voted to walk away... something can't do when it comes to Iran or Russia without dire consequences. That may mean war. Oppps...Good grief heaven forbid! Obama may actually be looked upon as, dare I say it, another Bush!

    This article is brilliantly written. It is a masterpiece. It is intellectually incisive,unambiguous, factual and written in flawless english. Nicholas Burns is a genius. We have to talk to our enemies. We are too aloof and intimidating to our so called enemies. America will be a safer, friendlier and more prosperous country if we try to foster peace through careful and genuine diplomacy. We are the most powerful nation on this planet. We need to use this power to improve relations between nations. I will vote for Obama beacuse he wants to talk. McCain wants to punish. Nicholas, I say it again "you are genius".

      Any elevation of a journalist to the genius level belies the real intent of the journalist's intent- i.e., to rub the readers with such baloney as to have them swoon at nonsense.

      I could agree with Ghengis Khan if he offered me food when I was starving, and drink when I was parched.
