I guess Palin is a lot like McCain when it comes to lobbyists and Big Oil.

Despite Palin's boast of a smart and fair bidding process, the AP found that her team crafted terms that favored only a few independent pipeline companies and ultimately benefited the winner, TransCanada Corp.

And contrary to the ballyhoo, there's no guarantee the pipeline will ever be built; at a minimum, any project is years away, as TransCanada must first overcome major financial and regulatory hurdles.

In interviews and a review of records, the AP found:

Instead of creating a process that would attract many potential builders, Palin slanted the terms away from an important group ??? the global energy giants that own the rights to the gas.
Despite promises and legal guidance not to talk directly with potential bidders, Palin had meetings or phone calls with nearly every major candidate, including TransCanada.
The leader of Palin's pipeline team had been a partner at a lobbying firm where she worked on behalf of a TransCanada subsidiary. Also, that woman's former business partner at the lobbying firm was TransCanada's lead private lobbyist on the pipeline deal, interacting with legislators in the weeks before the vote to grant TransCanada the contract. Plus, a former TransCanada executive served as an outside consultant to Palin's pipeline team.
Under a different set of rules four years earlier, TransCanada had offered to build the pipeline without a state subsidy; under Palin, the company could receive a maximum $500 million.

So much for her being a fiscal Conservative....Go OBAMA!

What's strange about the $150,000 for clothing (Palin never did the shopping) is that the media will never tell the public about the hundreds of thousands of dollars Obama and his family have spent on clothing and vacations. It is obvious to all that the media has been controlled by the Democrats and the Obama campaign. But I really don't think it will matter who is elected. You have Obama the socialist or McCain the globalist. Either way it will destroy America in the end.

Oh please. The issue here is that Palin repeatedly using public funds for her private use. She refuses to pay her own way.

And the BIGGEST problem with that is the hypocrisy of it all. She falsely labels any attempt to ease the financial burdens of the middle classes as 'socialist' while she's busy grabbing the biggest piece of pie for herself.

Why is it so difficult to understand this?

The Wailin' -Palin-Sarah of Wasilla will lose the electioan for yah.... (CLACK-WINK-JIBE)

I see the Liberal Media is already writing McCain's defeat speech. The Media is looking for any little thing they can find on Palin. She explained that she does not own the clothes the RNC bought them for her. They are NOT her clothes. I thought we were all supposed to stick to the issues? It is easy for Obama to stick to the issue because he had the Media to go after McCain and Palin. Sne is NOT a millionaire like the others.

    • Posted By: Itchy @ 10/26/2008 3:24:14 AM

The issue is Palin's dishonesty, her lack of ethics, her willingness to spend (or allow others to spend) public funds to support her private lifestyle, her hypocrisy, her existence as populist demagoguery, her role as a Barbie doll figurehead to appeal to the ignorant lower white middle class.

Why is that so difficult for you to understand?

Oh boo hoo. The Republican right-wing agenda has controlled the country's mainstream media for the last 7 years or so. The Republican right-wing has practiced the intimidation and censorship of the media on the level of any communist dictatorship. The mainstream media is finally finding a bit of backbone, that's all.

Is Palin the new Nixon? We all wrote him off after the Checker's Speech - he wrote us all off after losing his gubernatorial campaign and . . . .well, we all know what happened after that.

taking an anti-immigration stand. CAN WE SAY "Taking an anti ILLEGAL-immigration stand"? That has been the singular greatest lie made against the Republicans in recent years - we are NOT against immigration - we are against ILLEGAL immigration.

      >>The GOP has hurt itself by allowing candidates to use fear tactics across the country to demonize various groups. (NOW travels to Indiana to interview politicians, naturalized citizens, and business leaders to see how the politics of immigration is playing out, what people's fears are, and if xenophobia is playing a part in political tactics. One survey has found that people living in areas with few immigrants are much more likely to have a negative view of Hispanics.
"If you're a Republican Party that's fairing poorly, sometimes you have to win ugly," says Robert Dion, a local political scientist at the University of Evansville, "and in this case, it's stirring up fears about the menace posed by immigrants." - Alien Nation, pbs.org, 9-29-06??? ) Not illegal immigrants, not just any immigrants, only Latino immigrants. This is what the GOP spearheaded and supported. They didn???t mindfully make distinctions and they didn???t try to clarify the point. This is what led to comments from both Bush and McCain about Latinos being people, too. It is dehumanizing rhetoric that goes beyond immigrants and transfers to to Latino Americans in general.
The truth is >>>> (Not only does immigration appear to be "protective" against violence in poverty areas, violence was significantly lower among Mexican-Americans compared to blacks and whites. This _ "Latino Paradox," [shows they] do better on a range of social indicators_ than one would expect, _??? (--winter issue of the American Sociological Association's Contexts magazine and LiveScience.com 3-18-08)) These positive things are overlooked because of the political rhetoric that lumps all Latinos together as a group to be feared. Again, the GOP did themselves in on this topic by going over the top with it just to get votes.

Let's face it - Palin is the most unpopular politician in the United States right now. She has no talent. There's absolutely no way she could re-emerge. If she leads the GOP, the GOP will become the party of radicals and the Democrats will enjoy super-majority for decades until the GOP fixes itself or a third party emerges.

Palin has no future in national politics. I give the American public enough credit to not support someone who's intellectual rigor in understanding and commenting on national and international issues falls below that of a well-informed high schooler. And let's not even get started on her "skills" in understanding the U.S. Constitution. As a Republican, I've had enough of candidates with limited intelligence. Let's find somebody smart to move the party forward with!

(CNN) -- Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin likes to portray herself as an average American working mother.
But how many typical moms get $150,000 worth of merchandise from stylish stores and have strangers pay for it?

This week's revelation about the purchases was just one more surprise in the fast rise and apparent fall of the Republican Party's sudden superstar.

Remember, it was only two months ago that Palin was just the popular governor of Alaska, still an obscure figure in American politics. That changed in late August when John McCain chose her as his running mate.

Within days, she was generating the biggest excitement the McCain campaign had ever enjoyed, captivating the Republican Party, swelling the crowds at its rallies and drawing media coverage that overshadowed the Democrats.

One McCain advisor told me then that one of the practical problems she discovered as she criss-crossed the country was that she didn't bring enough clothes.

It seems her family didn't have enough clothes either, because suddenly there was some serious shopping.

A single visit to the fashionable department store Neiman Marcus cost more than $75,000, but that was only half of the total. The bills ultimately went to the Republican Party, which means that although they probably didn't know it, party donors paid for them.

Palin's problems go beyond clothes, though, to her very candidacy. In recent days, prominent Republicans, from former Secretary of State Colin Powell to Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan, have publicly criticized her lack of experience.

Ordinary Americans agree. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that in early September, when Palin was just starting out as a candidate, 47 percent of voters had a positive opinion of her, compared to 27 percent who felt negatively.

Now 47 percent have negative feelings, compared with 38 percent who feel positively.

And the new poll found that concern about Palin's qualifications is voters' top concern about McCain, ahead of every other issue in the election.

Voting day is less than two weeks away and most polls suggest that Barack Obama is headed for victory. The surprise is that Palin went from being McCain's best asset to his biggest problem. And the Republicans don't have much time, or an obvious way, to fix it.

McCain was quoted in 2000 saying he wasn't sure he would be able to run this time. He's having a sunset experience. Palin's a new face. Unfortunately, she has proven endlessly that she's no team player unless she's team captain and everybody falls in line. So she's certain to divide every venue she turns her attention on. She doesn't play well with others and she's got patterns of pragmatic denials / untruthfulness / stonewalling already and she's almost nobody. Now McCain's had a long and distinguised career and he can rest in that after. He's got his sense of humor. She's not at all humorous. She's righteous but hypocritical and what we may see is that ONLY McCain still likes her after all is said and done. He expects to mentor and foster her future. He wants to be there to do it but he might not mind watching as we do. If she blames him she's just make herself layers more laughable. She's become comedy to everyone but herself and Alaska. It's almost unthinkable that the Republicans can have the White House again after the crazy unstewardship of Cheney and Co,. So chances are, all these autopsies on the McCain campaign are not wrong, just early. Palin's utter lack of personal conscience and credibility is of no concern to her. She's not daunted by such concerns. She competes and this is competition, not statesmanship, statecraft, or even government. It is just competition. After her performance this year, she'll be newsworthy but no credible. Where can that go?

  • Posted By: Jill H @ 10/26/2008 2:00:11 AM

She's not likely to make it through the primaries to get a nomination. Once the Republicans are in the midst of choosing her own, the rest of the pack will turn, and with her light resume, she won't survive.

Palin's mind works in mysterious ways--must be the religion in her.

So let's see if we can follow the trail of logic:
Obama wants to give tax breaks to the middle class and raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans, so clearly he is a Socialist....which means he is really a Marxist.....which means he actually is a closet Communist....which means he must have an allegiance with a foreign power......which means he was probably born in a foreign country.....which naturally leads us to believe he is actually a Muslim.....which means he is actually a terrorist....which means he seeks to overthrow our government, kill our babies, and convert us all to Islam.

    Does that about cover it?

Perhaps she should cover her head in aluminum foil to prevent Obama's alien friends from implanting subversive thoughts in her brain. Hey, it worked in the X-files...

    • Posted By: Nins @ 10/26/2008 1:53:26 AM

Labman, I really loved your "trail of logic." It is hard to believe that Palin has said these things, and that some people actually believe this BS.

    Some questions for Sarah Palin:

    1. How do you justify running for Vice President when you previously supported the Alaska Independence Party, which promotes Alaska's secession from the United States?

    2. Do you believe in Biblical prophesy of "End of Days," and how would this and your other religious beliefs influence your duties as Vice President? Would you work to overturn Roe v. Wade?

    3. You stated one of your best friends "chose" to be gay. Did you choose to be heterosexual? What would you do if one of your children told you he or she were gay?

    4. You have spoken of the value of education and your pride in coming from a family of teachers. Do you approve of your future son-in-law dropping out of school?

Sarah Palin needs to stay in Alaska where she has been her entire life. She would show women back to the dark ages in ways of equal rights. Only SHE has the privilege of being in power. I think she has some serious power issues. I mean she really wears the pants in the family in the sense of philisophy, but you won't ever find her wearing a pantsuit. She likes to bring home the bacon literally, but prefers the stay at home dad to cook it up. She had a way of manipulatiing her stands to appeal to the crowd she was seeking....that is true. As for REAL substance, I think her diminished approval rating nationwide has spoken for itself.

I have heard it said, "never underestimate the intelligence of the American people" Brian's corollary: "never overestimate it, either."

i believe america is basically a fairly conservative country. "the legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done but cannot do at all in their separate and individual capacities." Abraham Lincoln. Our national credit card is maxxed out. our infrastructure is crumbling. the ruinous cost of Iraq will insure that the chinese and petrolords will own significant percentages of america for years to come. pat buchanan (not one of my favorites) recently wrote a brilliant analysis concluding that the American Empire is on its last legs. much of the budget is untouchable: social security, medicare, etc. the only place for the axe to fall is the military. we could cut the military budget in half and remake our country without compromising our security in the least. the government could be the employer of last resort, just like the WPA...we could retrofit buildings, bridges, feed the hungry, provide child care, job training, re-establish the industries we so casually threw away...the missile defense system, just for one, has never once worked...those billions could put solar power collectors in space, beaming down clean power...power for industry, for clean water, for green transportation...ms. palin gives us 'drill, baby, drill'. she must address the central issues of our time, or she will be just another right-wing nut case.

    • Posted By: LizzabethCan @ 10/26/2008 1:29:41 AM

Papaskip: you didn't describe a conservative country, nor was that quotation from Lincoln conservative. It was a liberal, compassionate remark, in keeping with Lincoln himself; and you've described a progressive country, one that cares more about its people than it does the almighty dollar. Just thought you'd like to know...

  • Posted By: Jrmapu @ 10/25/2008 4:37:07 PM

Meid-care, medi-caid, and social security have already been cut. I know I got the memo . I am the one to explain why the feds did this. Like I said the democrats are in control. They are the ones destroying the country with more disaster to come. I will have increased taxes even though I don't make 250K. Why? Because I am single. McCain would have worked with the dems to build the economy. Now our only hope is that the repubs got control of the house and senate. Then there will be hope for the future.

    • Posted By: Johnnycake @ 10/25/2008 6:10:13 PM

yeah, the GOP did real well when they had control... them and W.. Good riddance.. Let's have a Democratic Congress and president and get some stuff passed for once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Posted By: Jrmapu @ 10/26/2008 1:27:17 AM

I already voted. I am very comfortable with my vote. We will have another 2 more years of democrats increasing our taxes and spending it foolishly on their socialist programs to make the rich richer. Then the economy will turn around after the next election because then the republicans can take control of the house and senate. They will give Obama the credit he is searching for by balancing the budget and leaving a surplus just like they did for Bill.

      • Posted By: merrybees @ 10/25/2008 6:19:43 PM

Really Johnnycake? So that must be why you are such an expert at being able to spot "stupidity"...because you're so good at it yourself? Vote for Obama if you want to.
