I see things going the exact opposite way than this article suggests, if McCain loses. I see the Republicans realizing that the far-right, negative-campaigning, backward-thinking ways that they have fallen into over the last decade or more are no longer working for them. I see them realizing (they are already) that the intellectuals, coastal moderates, professionals, and independents are falling away from them. Sarah Palin is more like Bush than McCain is. She belongs to the Republican Party's past, not its future. The way forward is to try to bring some intelligence - and moderation - back into the party.

Palin is not the problem, the GOP and how it has abandoned us is. Palin is a conservative and the GOP has moved to the moderate middle. That will be why if the GOP loses. If they win it will be because of Palin giving the conservative side hope. I was not going to vote for McCain or Obama but with the selection of Palin I decided to.

I really like your immigration example because it highlights one of the big problems I see with Republican leadership. They're great at talking all about social and fiscal conservative values, but in reality they're in the pocket of big business and will side against their own rank and file whenever convenient. I hope that no matter what face Palin puts on the future Republican party, the middle class will stop being fooled into thinking they're being treated as anything but sheep.

I am a liberal. I learned this in coming back to the US after serving as a marine on Vietnams DMZ during some of the Marine Corps goriest history. Sarah Palin is just another shallow brainless American chick dead to everything except her own importance.

She like a lot of her generation that never went to war, never experienced a crucible in their life. Therefore she thinks she knows what suffering is? Suffering is having 5 children and no welfare to help during the depression in the 1930???s. Suffering is not having health insurance while seeing your wife die because of breast cancer. You have no health insurance because your job went overseas. And now the company you worked for has a post office box in the Cayman Islands.

She is against unions; however unions provided a good job for her husband, and the leisure time for her to get into politics. Ned I say more? No.

Oh, this is music to my ears. May the Republicans try to go far right in the future and really destroy their party forever. If you boys think thank Ms. Palin will ever be allowed to put her finger on the nuclear button you are sadly mistaken. Also, if I were you; I would keep my eye on Alaska to be sure it doesn't go slip, slip, slipping away. The previous owner is keeping an eagle eye on it!

The Republicans should use their time of unemployement to ponder the difference between governing and social engineering. Obviously, the recent experiment in social egineering has been, and will continue to be a complete failure.

Another famous line: Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public. I guess the same could be said about uninformed, undereducated voters.

In fact, I think it's a plank in the Republican platform!

You probably didn't mean to make McCain supporters look foolish, ingorant, hateful, and prejudiced, so I have a suggestion for you. Please don't post any more comments if you want McCain to win.

Another very possible scenario is that Sarah Palin will turn out to be, essentially, Jesse Ventura in drag. Where did Jesse's star go? Sunk into the babble of stupid things he actually said. A lot will depend on how events go for her in Alaska - and the signs are a bit ominous in that regard - and how she handles it. On the latter uncertainty, her track record is again not promising, but the amazing thing about her fan base is how little reality seems to matter! Still, I predict that in four years (or less) she will be an historical footnote - albeit one in red heels perhaps - and a joke to most Americans, "real" ones definitely included.
