While I agree with the overall sentiment of the article, and I do belive the author's intentions are good; I cannot help but feel that he may have done a grave diservice to the Obama campaign; I know he doesn't mean to imply that anyone who doesn't vote for senator Obama is a racist, but I am certain the vast majority of McCain supporters (and more damagingly lots of undecideds and independants) will feel they are being called racists and may very well vote out of anger for senator McCain, what a shame that would be.

This article reflects the "dumbing down" of information magazines. It is every bit as insulting, biased, & replete with sterotypes as it purports the voting public to be. If Obama loses at this point it will not be due to race or more specifically the Bradley effect as journalists are wringing their hands about these days. Where were you guys in 2000? No one was talking about the Bradley effect then when there many people who would have voted for Gore if he didn't have a Jew on his ticket. Nobody was worried about discrimination then. Give this guy due credit. If he loses HE will have lost or will have been beaten by a more familiar pol. Obama has earned the right to lose with dignity as well as win with it. An article like this does little but make him the "affirmative action" president which he is not. This whole article is reckless & irresponsible. Why is it that if you have decided not to vote for Obama it must certainly be because of the color of his skin? Why can't someone vote for McCain because they disagree with what Obama is claiming to bring to the presidency? It really seems to me the only people bringing race into factor are the ones that keep bringing it up when people don't support Obama. My vote would have noting to do with race but because I want the government to keep their fingers out of my health care and out of my checking account. I want to know that my children do not have to live in fear of a terrorist attack. I don't like the war as much as the next person but it needs to be finished properly. The live of the men and women that have been taken from this war will be taken in vain if we just up and leave a job unfinished. How are my feelings on these issues in anyway race related? And if Obama does win, will we spend the next 4 years saying yes to him so as not to seem racist?

"Low informed voters"? please, these people do have at least one friend or relative that IS informed and no doubt persuades them to vote for their best interest since they have the same interests and needs. I think Mr. Alter needs to interview the Obama supporters in Harlem. A few think it was a good idea that Obama chose Palin as his running mate.

Alter's commentary looks only at the immediate aftermath of a McCain victory. Clearly, the fall out from this result would mean continuing most of the policies of the past eight years, despite McCain's claim to the contrary. The Republican's will, as with Bush's slimmest of winning margins four years ago, declare they have a mandate to continue the wars in Iraq and Afganistan, alienate any country that questions U.S. policy on economic, environmental, healthcare and military issues, cut services for the most vulnerable through tax cuts for the richest 5%, continue to curtail civil liberties in the name of homeland security, appoint ideologically conservative jurists, and "drilll, drill, drill."
Should McCain prevail on Nov. 4, I believe Americans will realize the fears of diminishing world respect, support, and cooperation by going it alone; increasingly out of step with the world community. A perilous choice.

These are not heroic acts. They are merely examples of bad judgement or bad luck, neither of which I want in my President.

What you have siad here about the sacrifice of McCains POW experience , and the Fire on the Ship ( Which was a Missle that was accidently shot off by another plane and hit McCains plane , You really need to be more unbias here , and get your Facts straight , not just waste your own electrons !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's see if I understand this article--Obama may lose, but if he does it's only because he couldn't overcome the racist attitudes of so many Americans. The only reason McCain might win is because he is white, while the reason Obama would win is his noble ideas. BUNK! I would vote for Obama in a heartbeat if he wasn't a Democrat socialist. But I'm voting for McCain because he believes as I do that a Democrat president, regardless of skin color, will further damage our economy (the dems gave us Fannie and Freddie), weaken our national defense and invite new terrorist attacks which will be weakly answered if at all, and further erode the American family and American culture in general. I didn't vote for Clinton, Gore, or Kerry for those reasons, and for those same reasons I am not voting for Obama. Go ahead and cry racism if he loses; it will just be one more Democrat lie to add to the endless list.
