While I agree with the overall sentiment of the article, and I do belive the author's intentions are good; I cannot help but feel that he may have done a grave diservice to the Obama campaign; I know he doesn't mean to imply that anyone who doesn't vote for senator Obama is a racist, but I am certain the vast majority of McCain supporters (and more damagingly lots of undecideds and independants) will feel they are being called racists and may very well vote out of anger for senator McCain, what a shame that would be.
This article reflects the "dumbing down" of information magazines. It is every bit as insulting, biased, & replete with sterotypes as it purports the voting public to be. If Obama loses at this point it will not be due to race or more specifically the Bradley effect as journalists are wringing their hands about these days. Where were you guys in 2000? No one was talking about the Bradley effect then when there many people who would have voted for Gore if he didn't have a Jew on his ticket. Nobody was worried about discrimination then. Give this guy due credit. If he loses HE will have lost or will have been beaten by a more familiar pol. Obama has earned the right to lose with dignity as well as win with it. An article like this does little but make him the "affirmative action" president which he is not. This whole article is reckless & irresponsible. This is a disreputable article by a journalist who should know better.
What some of these people on this message board are obviously ignoring is people yelling terrorist, communist, coward, and traitor and these republican rallies. When you do that you have gone over a line that you can never come back from. Show me one clip of a democrat rally that does this, just one. You can't because it doesn't exist. Instead of disagreeing with some integrity you right wingers have chosen to call all democrats cowards and traitors. Remember there is a lot of democrats that have served this country and will never forgive or forget this.
Pardon me for saying this, but the worst racists in the U.S. are blacks. I refuse to call them "African Americans" any more than I call myself a "German American". I wasn't born in Germany, and they weren't born in Africa. Almost all are voting for Obama because he's black. Pure and simple. Not because he's more qualified for president, which he isn't. A year ago most people had never heard of Obama. Who the hell is he, really? I'll tell you. He's a black guy who wants to be the first black president. Period. And I'll tell you something else. If Obama loses, you're going to see the biggest riots you've ever seen. You'll see Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton on TV saying how they were robbed again by "whitey". One more thing. Life isn't fair. The luckiest thing that ever happened to black people in the U.S. was that their great, great, great grandparents were brought over here as slaves. Yes, slavery is totally wrong, but I never owned one. So stop blaming me. I don't care what color you are as long as you act decent, get a job, raise your family and pay your taxes. I do my best to be color blind, but Barack Obama does not and cannot represent me. So, "African Americans" who are the real racists?
Once again another idiot like you posting ill-advised comments. Try doing your research before posting stupid comments. I'm not even going to touch the comment about African Americans, I cannot stoop that low to your stupidity!!!!!!! But on the topic of blacks being racist b/c they support Obama is the craziest thing i've ever heard. "African-Americans has always and always will be faithful to the democratic ticket! Go look back into history and tell me when was the last time the republican party carried majority of the black vote. Think before you type!!!!!!!!!!
Why is it that if you have decided not to vote for Obama it must certainly be because of the color of his skin? Why can't someone vote for McCain because they disagree with what Obama is claiming to bring to the presidency? It really seems to me the only people bringing race into factor are the ones that keep bringing it up when people don't support Obama. My vote would have noting to do with race but because I want the government to keep their fingers out of my health care and out of my checking account. I want to know that my children do not have to live in fear of a terrorist attack. I don't like the war as much as the next person but it needs to be finished properly. The live of the men and women that have been taken from this war will be taken in vain if we just up and leave a job unfinished. How are my feelings on these issues in anyway race related? And if Obama does win, will we spend the next 4 years saying yes to him so as not to seem racist?
Alter you are a pot stirring maniac. Writing an article on rascism affecting this election is wasting time and conducting hate mongering. "Low informed voters"? please, these people do have at least one friend or relative that IS informed and no doubt persuades them to vote for their best interest since they have the same interests and needs. Conspiracy nuts on both sides should be black listed from the polls.
Comments on socialism and welfare are laughable . Republicans are ok with corporate welfare for the ultrarich? Yet are pained by "Forced charity" by means of fairer taxation? Hahahahah
Young people won't show up? Please, they are fueling at least one campaign yet they will forget to vote-- too silly for words.
After the DISMANTLING of America by Rebublicans we need a full generation of Democrats to clean up. Sorry to all the Libertarians who want to hide out with high powered rifles while sitting on their stashes of gold waiting the last days.

This article will forever taint Newsweek in my eyes. Is this supposed to balanced in anyway at all? It's a "horror story" if John McCain wins??? And of course, if Mr. Obama loses, it's because the majority of Republicans and Independants are racist. It couldn't possibly be that some of us disagree with his politics and positions right? In the interest of full disclosure, I will state that I do plan to vote for McCain, but if I was on the fence, this article would have pushed me over. If the "horror story" plays out, the press can thank themselves. The American people can sense your bias, and the blatant misrepresentation of all things McCain-Palin may just be what causes them to win. When I cast my vote, it will not be based in ANY way on the color of anyone's skin. But, I'm sure you won't believe that. Maybe you're the one who should be ashamed of your obvious prejudices.
You idiots don't understand the concept of balanced: balanced means equal quantitative coverage by the media, it does NOT mean they have to say good things about both candidates.
That's what gets me about you emotional wrecks, calling 'liberal media' all the live-long days. So if a rapist with no experience who sent anthrax in the mail was running for president, you would expect the media to cover him in a good light?? Of course not. But you're just being unreasonable when you say that the media can't cover negative issues with McCain and Palin because there are just so many--far more than most in history and far, FAR more at issue ideologically and rationally. You jus can't see it and make STRAWMEN--parroting those idiot candidates.
I think Mr. Alter needs to interview the Obama supporters in Harlem. A few think it was a good idea that Obama chose Palin as his running mate.
Alter's commentary looks only at the immediate aftermath of a McCain victory. Clearly, the fall out from this result would mean continuing most of the policies of the past eight years, despite McCain's claim to the contrary. The Republican's will, as with Bush's slimmest of winning margins four years ago, declare they have a mandate to continue the wars in Iraq and Afganistan, alienate any country that questions U.S. policy on economic, environmental, healthcare and military issues, cut services for the most vulnerable through tax cuts for the richest 5%, continue to curtail civil liberties in the name of homeland security, appoint ideologically conservative jurists, and "drilll, drill, drill."
Should McCain prevail on Nov. 4, I believe Americans will realize the fears of diminishing world respect, support, and cooperation by going it alone; increasingly out of step with the world community. A perilous choice.
All you anti-Obama guys. Your hateful and nastiness isn't going to change a thing. For the life of me, I can not figure out why anyone would want a feeble 72 year old man, who is showing signs of dementia, to be the president of a country in free fall. He has been controlled by a certain group in Washington ever since he began running. People that might have a political future avoided his advances towards them as he looked for a VP. The power hungry group who control his strings had to find someone who was as power crazy as they were and they found that person in Palin. They chose Palin and she has been very effective in taking the pressure off as he continued his downward spiral, and she almost, but not quite, made it to election day. Her facade is fading as intelligent people begin to see through the "cuteness" and begin to see her real "shallow" self. Palin is about as power hungry as they get. She has overshadowed him with lies and veiled racial scare tactics and now he can gracefully lose because he can blame it on her. If they happen to get elected, and I were McCain, I'd hire me a taste tester and check the brakes daily.
I really don't see hate and nastiness coming from the right this time around. Just look at what the obama supporters on this blog are saying about McCain supporters.
This article disgusts me. McCain can only win if there's enough racists on his side?
Hey what about all the blacks and hispanics blindly voting for the minority candidate?
Maybe I don't believe in socialism? Maybe I voted Obama in the primary and decided to switch to the alternative when I learned more about his moronic policy? Maybe 40+ percent of the country is republican? Maybe they aren't all exactly the same as each other?
OH MY GOD MCCain and Bush are from the same 40% of the population they must be the same person!
This is like drinking whole milk for your entire life, getting a spoiled carton once and trying to make a case to switch to drinking motor oil. Government control of the economy worked great for Russia right? (actually no)
But hey it worked great for China right? (again no)
Oh but I'm just a racist. What do I know?
Blacks voted for (Clinton Gore and Kerry....All white..with the same 95% of voters)We vote for Obama because we like his polices not because of his skin if hillary was in the same position she woulld get the same 95% of our vote because of her policies...i resent this idea that we only vote for him because hes black(like we dont listen to issues or not smart enough to make an informed choice) STOP THE STEROTYPES!!!!!!! WE ARE NOT ALL IGNORANT GHETTO AND VIOLENT!!!
http://www.bpmdeejays.com/upload/hs_sal_in_Harlem_100108.mp3
Not ignorant?
I am terrified of a McCain / Palin win.
God forbid McCain / Palin should win -- any victory for them is a victory for hate and stupidity pure and simple. A McCain / Palin victory would be a victory for the Nazi party, for the KKK, for greed and for ignorance.
Palin is a dangerous Nazi -- a terrifying combination of arrogance; the-laws-are-for-the-little-people; ME FIRST; take, take, take; dishonesty and stupidity.
McCain is an unqualified impulsive, erratic, dangerously unstable rage-filled master of confusion, chaos and drama.
McCain / Palin -- if -- GOD FORBID -- they were elected will take us back to the dark ages; destroy our freedom; destroy American, and as soon as they possibly can erupt WWIII -- possibly destroying the world.
For those who believe in Armmegdon - McCain / Palin will take us all there
If the evil that is Palin is allowed anywhere near the White House many decent, God-following, educated and intelligent Americans will flee the country.
However, once McCain / Palin manage to create WWIII there will be nowhere safe on earth.
No mistake about it
McCain / Palin = The Axis of Evil
McCain / Palin are unintelligent and believe Americans are stupid
Obama is brilliant and credits Americans with being intelligent
I hope and pray Obama is right.
You have NO IDEA what you are talking about! You are definitely NOT an informed voter. Do some more resarch before you vote...
The Dr just called. It's time to take you meds.
Oh my! I don't think there are meds STRONG enough to help this delusional person!!!

being invoived in the cause of the deadly USS Forrestal ship fire which killed over 100 men, crashing several planes during his early pilot career, and getting himself shot down and captured. These are not heroic acts. They are merely examples of bad judgement or bad luck, neither of which I want in my President.
What you have siad here about the sacrifice of McCains POW experience , and the Fire on the Ship ( Which was a Missle that was accidently shot off by another plane and hit McCains plane , You really need to be more unbias here , and get your Facts straight , not just waste your own electrons !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let's see if I understand this article--Obama may lose, but if he does it's only because he couldn't overcome the racist attitudes of so many Americans. The only reason McCain might win is because he is white, while the reason Obama would win is his noble ideas. BUNK! I would vote for Obama in a heartbeat if he wasn't a Democrat socialist. But I'm voting for McCain because he believes as I do that a Democrat president, regardless of skin color, will further damage our economy (the dems gave us Fannie and Freddie), weaken our national defense and invite new terrorist attacks which will be weakly answered if at all, and further erode the American family and American culture in general. I didn't vote for Clinton, Gore, or Kerry for those reasons, and for those same reasons I am not voting for Obama. Go ahead and cry racism if he loses; it will just be one more Democrat lie to add to the endless list.
Jesus also said "Thou shall not kill". Abortion kills millions of babies every year. I cant support someone who thinks that killing a baby is acceptable. Women need to show some self control and self respect. By doing so they will save millions of lives.
More people are killed by lack of insurance and gun deaths each year than by abortion. Also what is your take on entopic pregnancy?
Think about it this way: in an ectopic pregnancy, there is NO WAY that the baby can mature properly because of where it is seated, AND it is a danger to a mother. That is the ONLY time that I personally would consider an abortion. Compare that to PARTIAL BIRTH abortion, where there is no doubt that a baby is a baby. Murder is happening to these babies, whether you like it or not, and whether you agree or not. There are so many couples in America that can't have children that want to. They would love to adopt an "unwanted" baby. The only people that that child is unwanted by is the people who don't want to deal with the consequences of their actions, who believe that their right supercedes the rights of all others. Give the kid a chance; just because you don't want to have to take care of it doesn't mean that no one will.
So you do believe in abortion now that we agree what about rape? Incest? morning after pill? birth controll?
Don't agree with abortion at all. No matter what the circumstance the mother goes through, it's not the baby's fault, and the baby is the one that gets punished. I said that ectopic pregnancy is the only time that I would even give abortion a thought. I never said that I would do it. In fact they would probably have to force me to have one.
Sorry Ectopic
