What if McCain wins? This would be good for the world in general. We would be better off having in control a man who has spent decades accumulating political wisdom, than to place this gigantic presidential resoponsibility into the hands of a rookie politician who speaks as if he has the answers to everything.

To bad the rest of the world fears a McCain presidency. Seems the rest of the world thinks McCain and his Cuda are bad news, unenlightened and creepy.

Mr. Alter you have truly tanked for the liberal left. Somehow you cannot understand why a person could vote for a Republican. They must be uninformed or racist. Could it possibly be his share the wealth philosophy? His lack of any kind of bipartison record? His inexperience? His liberal voting record? His abortion philosphy? His ties to ex terrorists or a racist pastor'? He is such a great guy he through his now ailing grandmother under the bus to shake the Rev. Wright story. I d appreciate that you and your magazine are regularly proving a huge leftist bias in the press. Thanks very much for that confirmation.

"where the astonishing Republican margins among whites could be attributed only to race.". I had to say outloud of this author, "What an idiot!" I am sick and tired of this! I agree with another person on this comment section that the Democrats have cornered the market on racism. They do that to get votes ??? could care less how harmful it can be to country ??? just want to advance their agenda, whatever that is. I would add that the "mainstream" media is driving the train of racial divide in our country. Articles like this - dishonestly - attribute way too many things to race. It is the "easy" out - typical of liberals - blame somebody else or something else ??? it certainly couldn???t be what Obama???s values and politics are ??? oh, no, couldn???t be that. Let's not go in to the issues of how a candidate will govern ??? big government vs. small, how a candidate views the role of the Supreme Court, etc. Let???s continue to argue - and intimidate people to vote so we don???t ???appear??? racist. I would vote for a black candidate in a heartbeat if he shared my view of how government should run, i.e. Michael Steele. To cast aspersions on white Republicans that we are only voting for McCain because he is white is ridiculous! Unfortunately, ???journalists??? like this, have a pulpit and too many people are sucked in to this rhetoric. If we do talk about ???race??? votes, let???s also look at how many people are voting for Obama just because he is black. I would bet there are plenty more that are voting for him because he is black, than are not voting for him because he is black. I don???t believe the country is as racist as the media likes to purport and perpetuate. That is pathetic and sad and *that* is not good for the country. Obama is guilty of that with some of his rhetoric, too, although not to the extent of so many others. He is an incredible politician, eloquent, charming???.scary. Let???s get to the basics ??? McCain may not be as eloquent but at least he is more honest, direct, has integrity and a backbone.

Hey NewsWkDickG - Re: your comment

Example: "Why do they always neglect to note that Obama's plan only advocates higher taxes for the top 5%, those who have been placated and patronized by the Bush Admin ..."

Do you even know who falls under the TOP 5 % TAX BRACKET? If not... let me clue you in!

In BO's eyes, you are considered rich---TOP 5% - NOT Middle-Class---if you make more than below: (a whoppin'!)

    SINGLE: $32,500 per year

    MARRIED: $65,100 per year

IN SUM, IF YOU MAKE MORE THAN THAT YOU ARE OFFICIALLY A RICH REPUBLICAN I SUPPOSE! CONGRATS TO ALL WHO QUALIFY!!!!

SO MUCH FOR ALL THOSE MIDDLE-CLASS TAX BREAKS HUH? LOL! WAKE UP PEOPLE. B4 IT'S TOO LATE!!!

This is an unbelievably ignorant article. To say that the only plausible reason for my McCain/Palin vote is because I'm racist is incredibly offensive and abrasive. There are more than a few distinctions in the policies touted by these candidates. It is incredibly arrogant and even ignorant to imply that ones own viewpoint is the only way of looking at the choice we have a week from now. I see no serious analysis of the effect that all the massive changes Obama is proposing will have on America. Much of what he is suggesting has been tried elsewhere in the world. What makes these policies (I'm thinking specifically of wealth redistribution and nationalizing healthcare) good for America when it is arguable whether they have ever been beneficial for any country in the history of mankind? Why is it now required to scrap an economic system that has without question made America the richest country in the world? These are honest questions I have and they will never be answered if both sides continue to label each other and participate in surface level arguments. Articles like this are sickening to me because fundamentally, they seek to undermine the credibility of the other side. It would be one thing if I saw thoughtful weighing in one the issues, but I don't. America, we need to talk openly and honestly. We have a huge decision to make.

If the voters knew that the Democratic Party Presidents ALWAYS created more jobs than Republican Party Presidents, they would know the Democratic Party is the Party tha cares about jobs and workers. Of the 12 Presidents since 1933, the six BEST at creating jobs have been the six Democrats and the six Worst have been the six Republicans. You can find this information on www.waggonerpost.com, or a NY TImes graph of July 3, 2003, or the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or place a call to 254/485-1758, or email boydwaggoner@hotmail.com

Ah, there a lies, damn lies, then statistics. I can bend those numbers any way you'd like to show the exact opposite conclusion. And, the Waggoner website doesn't reveal if those are jobs or private sector only jobs. If the former, then job growth would be higher under Democratic administrations because they increase the size of government. Also, you need to take lag effects into account. Every administration, democrat or republican, gets baggage and benefit from the previous administration - democrat or republican. I looked at BLS data from 1959 - 2007 and the job growth figures look to be about even across those 48 years. Just so you know, I have a master's degree in economics so I know how the data works.

Talk about the racist card being over-played by Liberals on this forum. Enough is enough and the attacks on Sarah Palin, are your motives to slam her in sexist terms and not apy attention to your own faults. I sincerely believe that to be the case. I do not care for the candidate from Chicago, Obama is in fact no more qualified to run the USA than Senator Biden.
We all need to be very careful in what we say about each candidate in terms of race and sex, it will come back to haunt us all.

I love how democrats point the finger of racist at conservatives, but with each left wing post they display their bigotry. With the posts from the left we see their age discrimination, their desire for class warfare and the democrat???s sexism. Liberals attack McCain for being too old; you need to be careful there. Class warfare, tax the rich, the rich are bad people lets bring them down they make too much money anyways (forgetting that they are the people that for the most part are the ones creating the jobs in this country). Gee that sounds soo much like Lenin circa 1915. And my favorite smears from the left, their sexism. Hillary supports just get over it and vote for me, what a lovely sentiment from the Obama camp if you want the women,s vote. And now the sexist attacks on Palin, gee how can she run for office with 5 kids? She has a special needs child she should be at home with that baby. The democrats claim to be the big tent party but I guess you are only allow in if your young, poor and male. No wonder Obama???s numbers are starting to dropping.

Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga said Sunday no date has been set for selling up to 45 percent more of the team to Stephen Ross, but the presidential election is among the issues weighing on his decision.

That's because a Barack Obama administration is expected to mean higher capital-gains taxes.

"He wants to double the capital gains tax, or almost double it," Huizenga said. "I'd rather give it to charity than to him.""If you do it this year or you do it next year, the difference is humongous because of the taxes," Huizenga said.

Oh, like the one where denied a relationship with Ayers but there's a mountain of evidence to the contrary? Oops, that's Obama.

Or, the one where he said he wasn't involved with ACORN but then, shucks, it was discovered his campaign gave $832,000 to them and he served as their lawyer. Oops, that was Obama

Or, the one where he said he couldn't find his transcript to Columbia. Oops, that was Obama too.

Or the one where he won't clarify his relationship with Rezko. Obama again.

Or, the one where he won't clarify why his wife got a $300+K per year job at the very hospital he earmarked millions of dollars in pork? Obama there too.

Or the one where he says he's going to give 95% of taxpayers a tax cut but then says he's going to increase taxes on people making more than $250K per year? Obama strikes again.

Whose lies are you tiring of? Are all Newsweak readers this blind?

When Charlie Gibson asked Obama in April why he supported higher capital gains taxes, even if that meant less government revenue and thus less money to give to those Obama wants to help, Obama didn???t challenge Gibson???s claim. Instead he said: ???I would look at raising the capital gains tax for purposes of fairness.???

A bombshell was released this weekend when a copy of an interview by Obama on WBEZ-FM, Chicago Public Radio, from 2001 was found:

The Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society ... and one of the, I think, tragedies of the civil rights movement was, um, because the civil rights movement became so court focused, I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change.

Class warfare rhetoric is one thing. But as Obama???s comments to Charlie Gibson indicate, Obama disapproves of the very notion that people should be successful. Why is making the wealthy poorer ???fairness,??? even when the poor also get less money? The goal is not to help the poor, it's to keep the wealthy from getting too much. It is apparently better that everyone be poorer than it is to have everyone have more money but a greater dispersion of income.
There is so much else beyond his statements. Obama surrounded himself with people who were socialists and communists. Obama???s minister of 20 years, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright with his black liberation theology, a religion described as turning ???Jesus into a black Marxist rebel.??? Father Michael Pfleger, another Obama spiritual adviser, is also quite leftist. And his associate William Ayers apparently told an author, who was writing a book on 1960s radicals shortly before the foundation was set up in 1995, that ???I???m a radical, leftist, small ???c??? communist.???
In April Obama was caught on tape telling San Francisco donors, in a meeting that was closed to the press, that ???it???s not surprising then they get bitter, [small town Pennsylvanians] cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren???t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.??? It was a very elitist left-wing statement. But the despising of people turning to religion is certainly something held in common by those on the far left.
During the presidential campaign Obama???s past positions have generally been ignored. Why wasn???t there one single question during the debates as to why Obama has so radically changed his positions on so many issues within just a few months?

          • Posted By: AskPlus @ 10/27/2008 5:15:42 PM

It's a bombshell. Look out. October surprise. Boy was I wrong. He is a communist, terrorist, Christian-Muslim, socialist, elitist, no flag-pin wearing, traitorous, Arab nation plant.

How's McCain's economic and environmental policy being received?

Not a terribly effective come-back but why should I be surprised. So, am I to understand then that a vote for McCain is inherently racist? Am I to understand you actually agree with this farce, this insult to the Ameircan people penned by Johnathan Alter? Cripes, Johnathan Alter couldn't carry McCain's jock-strap.

While I don't pretend to speak for blacks or for MLK (presumably like you do) I am willing to wager that he'd be upset by Alter's article. After all, MLK said we need to judge a man by his character not the color of his skin. So that's what I'm going to do and anyone who doesn't is the real racist.

What's really shocking is it's taken a couple of hundred posts to this blog to get that simple point across. There's really no argument. If you vote for Obama ONLY BECAUSE HE'S BLACK you're a racist. If you vote for McCain ONLY BECAUSE HE'S WHITE you're a racist too.

Just thinking of finishing a thought I made on a post earlier. I guess I get tired as an American being told somehow that it is a bad thing. Why is it that we ourselves and the rest of the world seem to judge us as ONE. Yes, we are one country, but we are also individuals, with our own thoughts and beliefs and being able to disagree is one of the best things we have. We are allowed to disagree with each other and even the President...and yet we put weight into other countries opinions of us. Countries that if you disagreed with the President you could end up in jail or worse, that as a female you have no rights. Isn't it a sort of GLOBAL PROFILING. After 9-11 we (Americans) got hammered for automatically being suspicious of anyone of middle eastern decent, or if someone said that they were a Muslim. We were told that we shouldn't group and automatically assume anything of any one individual, because of course not ALL MUSLIMS ARE EXTREMIST OR TERRORIST. Not all Germans are Nazis. And yet, they (heck the world) judges us as one huge group and most of it is negative...we are called warmongers (for protecting ourselve) and the list goes one. And for whatever crazy reason we have allowed this to continue. What were we suppose to do after 9-11? We had already had the barracks bombing, the embassies, the first WTC and the USS Cole and our government barely batted an eye? . Maybe it is time to pull back, all the way back, leave the rest of the world alone and see how they like it without our money (can't happen realistically, but it might be nice). See that part of the US they don't mind. You can't invite or want someone to help you and then turn it around on them and tell them to mind their own business. You can't have it both ways, and so yes, sometimes you have to take the bad with the good.

You should remember that before you support "all liberals are UnAmerican" and believe that all liberals think "All Reps are bigots and call us racist". Neither one is true, but you seem to only support one side.

No where in my last comment did I talk about Republican or Democrats....I was talking about being an American. Or about one side or the other being UnAmerican....I was wondering why we put up with the hatred and the negative from practically the whole world, when we are always being told to walk the PC line....as Americans.. reread it again and get back to me.

Sorry. I was talking about your body of work which includes the old Rep race and party cards - with a flag pin and Ayers un-American lie tossed in. You may have forgotten since you turned so understanding and - dare I say it - progressive so fast. It reads like this:

          Posted By: life2go @ 10/27/2008 1:32:48 PM
Comment: I started out this election process (over a year ago) really liking alot of the things I heard about Obama and a lot of what I saw. But it has been him and only him and his actions that turned me away (not his color). Three things really did it for me.

          1. Him going overseas with all his rallies over there, talking to them. Absolutely turned me off. I could understand going and meeting the other politicians, but the huge rallies he held....made me feel like he was going more for a WORLD LEADER position rather than running for the American Presidency.

          2. REMOVING THE AMERICAN FLAG...HE DOESN'T NEED A SYMBOL. IF HE IS RUNNING TO BE MY PRESIDENT THEN THE AMERICAN FLAG IS HIS SYMBOL. There are people out there who seems to think that the American Flag represent all kinds of bad things and ill feelings, if that is how they feel then they can leave. The American Flag represents alot, and some of our history isn't great, but if you don't feel that you still live in the best country with all our freedoms (aleast while we still have them) and that you aren't proud of our flag....THEN GET THE HECK OUT AND LEAVE. And if you are running to be my COMMANDER IN CHIEF, then you better damn well, respect and have no problems with displaying it WITH PRIDE.

          3. And this isn't necessarily him personally, but the whole thing. I am sick and tired of having the race card shoved down my throat....and not sure how I will stomach 4 years, if that is what it comes down to.

I'm tired that I keep getting told that somehow Reverend Wrights, Bill Ayers, etc... are somehow acceptable. That I am suppose to accept that Rev. Wrights hateful, racist and mean words and attitude are okay and understandable, that I have to understand where he is coming from....WRONG...AIN'T BUYING INTO IT. Mean and hateful is just plain mean and hateful and it is never acceptable from ANYONE FOR ANY REASON.

Bill Ayers again, hateful and yes, by our definition now a terrorist. One that still doesn't feel bad for what he did and wished he'd done more. Somehow I'm suppose to ignore these facts and that Obama has had numerouse questionable "friendships, working partners" with more than just 1 or 2, not sure what to call them. And then he wants to claim IGNORANCE of their beliefs and thoughts...especially after 20 years...again..NOT BUYING IT.

These are a few of the reasons why I have already voted for McCain/Palin.

I'll take the Veteren POW and a hockey mom over 2 MORE LAWYERS running this go

Not what I would call tolerant, practical or even real.

First how is it the Ayers un-American lie....I researched it...I heard for myself the comments he made. I don't trust anyone to tell me what to believe. Especially not anyone in the Political Arena, but it is still a point that matters. Like I said sometimes it is the small things that seem to have no meaning that add up. It wasn't even that Obama had contact with him that bugged me, it is that some how I'm suppose to believe that Obama had no clue what kind of person he was. And that somehow it shouldn't matter to me....it does and that should matter.

I wasn't talking about a flag pin...I was talking about him repainting his plane and coming out with his OWN SYMBOL. Yes as you are flying around on a plane tryig to get elected the US President, why make it an issue of it. Why remove it in the first place? That is the point that bothers me. Why? I didn't call him unAmerican but it does bother me. To not wear a pin, (fine whatever, but then when you go and repaint your plane and use YOUR SYMBOL on your items...that is a different story). These are the things that caused me to doubt. Like I said later...I've had friends die for those colors and any President of the US should be proud to stand for them.

I haven't changed in my thoughts or beliefs...maybe you are just looking at them from a different angle. I admitted in my first writing that I wouldn't want my life inspected under a microscope and that we all have friends and family that wouldn't pass the test....and I also stated that what got me was that I was suppose to believe that HE DIDN'T KNOW AFTER 20 YEARS...again another reason to doubt.

Not party-lining here....just honest to goodness doubt. And don't I reserve that freedom to question and doubt, without being grouped with crazy. lazy, uneducated LIB haters. Because none of those apply. Can you given me a good enough reason and explanation, for the things I question. I have yet to find anyone willing to HONESTLY DISCUSS THEM. Tell me why it shouldn't matter to me. Cross the party lines and lets talk.

And just so you think that all my problems with the Obama//Biden ticket are "party-line issue"...I also have my doubts about Biden...first of all the man has been in the Senate longer than I've been alive. How can he tell me he knows what it is like to be me. Especially, and I'll only use one example. I personally don't know anyone who can afford to have brain surgery and take 7-8 months off of work...while still getting paid for the whole 7-8 months. Anyone I know would lose their job, lose their benefits, and the house of cards would follow. That in itself, regardless of everything else turns me off. He can't say he knows what it is like to ME. There are ways and things that he has said that I find come across as condesending.

First of all I have never had the 'ALL ANYONE' attitude. Each to their own time and choices. But there is something to be said about party lines....even you admit to that with your party line comments.

And yes, here I am again, but I'll admit a few things you said caught my interest. I find it interesting that you want to make sure you are an individual (aren't we all). "And don't challenge me"....why? I believe it is so much better for us to challenge each other and engage each other...get involved. So much better than isolating ourselves by beliefs or race. Why should I care what is widely accepted? Again, I too am an individual...that can agree with some aspects and still disagree with others. " I get you don't like me, and I'm more than okay with that. I'd be insulted and would have to analyze my existence and regroup if you did sir".time for therapy then.....who said I didn't LIKE YOU....I don't know you well enough to make that judgement. Just because we disagree with each other doesn't mean that we (atleast I) have to dislike each other. And even if I did know you better it doesn't mean that I wouldn't like you. It is kind of like with Obama...I do disagree with him and there are things that I don't like ABOUT HIM....but that doesn't mean that I personally don't like him or that he isn't a good person in general. Why isn't that to disagree means you have to dislike (or lets use a heavier word hate) the other person? "But, don't post so Rep then say someone is calling you names - while not touching on a single one of those issues sir"....but you have been calling names.

"If you do decide to respond - don't come back with some party-line smear. They've all been fact-checked and dismissed by all but the crazies - don't be one" What party-line smear have I used? You make the same judgements on other people that you don't like them doing to you. You make the same misjudgements also.

I am not voting for Obama because of his socialist policies-not because he is a black man. I have scary news....I have talked to many life long Democrats who are voting Republican for the very first time in their lives. Obama scares them. He scares me too. Just remember. it is not over. McCain could shock all of you liberals-and win.

Duh. I'm not for the socialist elitest. But, duh, not because he's black - duh.

What about the percentage of Blacks who will vote for Obama, based "on the color of his skin"?!?!? That's a statistic worth mentioning but people like Alter don't ever go there. Besides, African Americans are going to vote Democrat anyway...isn't that just another truism that liberals take for granted. Real nice.

    • Posted By: Alvy @ 10/28/2008 1:42:00 AM

Still the nutjob. 95% voted for the Demmy for 36 years. 98% vote Demmy now. What changed? Or 3-5% percent don't vote for Republican. Why ask dumb questions? Gotta love the cute idiots.

Although the thought of Hussein Obama leading this country turns my stomach John McCain has noone to blame but himself. He has run the most milk toast campaign in history. Obama has given him so much to hammer on but John spent the first two months saying nothing but vote for me because i was a POW for 5 1/2 years. No hammering Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers, Obama's accepting large amounts of cash from Freddie and Franny and then hiring their top people for his campaign, Anti-American comments in his books and from his Communist wife, the list goes on and on and on. Yet McCain lets it all slide.

I have sincere fear over what the condition of our country will be in with Obama and Pelosi in charge. Maybe Osama will send Obama a message and hit Chicago next.If so, I'm sure it will either be Bush's fault or a right wing conspiracy because the Messiah is made of teflon. Oh yeah, and he's black so he's untouchable, too!!!

It is far right-wing nutjobs like you who have destroyed the republican party. Much obliged!
