I just don't understand why anyone would use illicit drugs. There are alternatives, alchohol, ???. By taking illegal drugs you are putting grenades directly into the hands of the guys who would thow them into a crowd. WAKE UP. I assume you actually have to buy said drugs, and are therefor within 1 degree of separation from someone who would just as soon slit your kneck (or sell to your children) as look at you. Why do people associate with this? Why do they give money to these people? Do they have any self control? That said, I am for legalization. This is not an oxymoron. Since it is illegal, I refuse to participate, and I refuse to associate with those (with blood on their hands) who do.

Alcohol is more dangerous than certain illegal drugs (mushrooms, cannabis) and some people who can't drink alcohol can smoke pot with few ill effects. To me, your statement that you can't understand why people would use them is incorrect - you *don't* understand, but your lack of understanding does absolutely nothing to change the situation and will tend to give you no credence to explain your views among those people who do.

If I were you, I'd focus more on trying to understand why people use drugs than just judging them without trying to understand them.

Hello my Mexican friends. I love the sinsemilla you produce. I am rolling a cigarro of some fine Mexican mota right now. Que bueno!!

All of this killing is directly linked to Americas war on drugs. A war of wasted lives and wasted money that has led to nothing but an increase in crime and drug use. American citizens have lost respect for their government due to the unhindered lies coming out of politicians mouths. The war on drugs does nothing but keep cops employed and the value of Cocaine and Marijuana at a high level. Excuse me while I roll a joint of Mexican Sinsemilla. Gracias Mexicano cultivars de la mota!!!

If you are not interested in Mexico's problems why take your time to read through the article. The truth is that Mexico's problems and U.S. problems are intertwined in many ways.

Howdy there buddy. Respectfully here is my comment, you translate it however you wish.
On my way to work, I passed by a U'Haul office and saw 4 latino males looking for work, then I turned by a nursery where I saw 2 more latinos looking to help out shoppers and make a few bucks; then...closer to my job, I saw a total of two homeless Americans (one African-American and a Caucasian male) standing at the corner of the intersection holding a sign "Homeless, please help" the second subject was holding a sign "why lie, I need a beer". Now you tell me who is the lazy and problematic people in America. And "Yes" I'm latino. You have a great day and the next time you wish to make a comment, choose your words carefully. Adios Amigo

Hey, rjgunter go pick up your pipe and smoke your coolness. In the meantime intelligent adults are having a constructive conversation.

To those ignorant people who think we should leave Mexico to fend for itself-- who do you think caused this problem in Mexico? The consumers of drugs are in the US. It is the stubborn bone-headed policy of zero-tolerance that causes the violence -- just as it did in Chicago during the prohibition. The more the govt cracks down, the more profitable the drug business becomes, and the more people die. Mexico is NOT run by the drug cartels. What an ignorant statement. President Calderson ran on a platform that emphasized defeating the drug cartels. The police, soldiers, judges, and politicians that are fighting the battle risk their lives and the lives of their families. Come on America., let's give a good friend a break. They are fighting OUR battle.

    • Posted By: rjgunter @ 10/27/2008 7:25:26 PM

Actually, we are not interested in changing out ways,or "battling" our bad habits. That would be uncool. Instead we (those doing illegal drugs) are funding the battle against the police, soldiers, judges, and politicians of Mexico.

With the increased demand for illicit drugs in the U.S., Mexico's drug violence will only get worse. If you kill of the demand there will be no need for supply from Latin American countries. Of course this scenario would exist only in a perfect world. Nonetheless, something needs to be done to reduce the violence now affecting perfectly innocent people who are trying to make an honest living for themselves.

Thanks to President Clinton's 1993 signing of NAFTA we are now going to be invovled with Mexico keeping drugs smuggler's out of the United States and worse is we will be sending our US Army into Mexico to quell the violence. Removing farmer's from their land in Mexico is just as bad as when Conglomerate Food Corporations removed American Farmer's from their land and drove them out of business. Now we pay more for food and those displaced farmer's now live in the cities. Let's just keep lettin g the governmentts of Mexico and the United States destroying our country! VOTE FOR RON PAUL should have been our election theme, however the government leaders and the International banker's kept the very best Candidate for President out of the debates. Now we only have a criminal -- Barack hussein Obambam and a run of the mill republican John McCain (the better of the two) as Candidate's. How screwed up can our country get???

Listen Joe the plumber, I guess it was Mexico that caused Enron, World.co, Countrywide, Lehman Bros, and all those other MEXICAN Companies that robbed YOU, YOUR CHILDREN and GRANDCHILDREN of the 86 THOULSAND Dollars that we now owe them, Hu? They are sooooo good that they are now taking 850 BILLION ( with a B ) more to from you to make you feel better about robbing you. Now take your six pack, put on your hood, and go back to your trailer and stay there , you FOOL!

Where is the shock? The headline hit me like "well DUH, the US War on (some) Drugs kills innocents all over the world!" Who cares about little black or brown children? Once little white kids of middle class NASCAR loving Bible Thumpers are caught up in the violence, we will see some real action on this issue. Until then, it is status quo.

    Until then, its tstatus quo.

Drugs kill people or the prohibition against drugs kills people? Just like the government lead effort to eradicate alcohol during prohibition miserably failed so too has the effort against illicit drugs. Consider the harm , if any that John Q Public cause to himself or society when in his home he smokes a joint of marijuana. If left unregulated, does John really effect anyone other than John? Now consider the effect of prohibition against marijuana which really means nothing more than authorizing law enforcement to arrest those that violate a law having no effect on whether the law is or is not broken. The 4th,5th, and 6th amendment protections have been eroded with intellectual dishonesty in an unprecedented effort to take away choice. Marijuana is a cash crop until recently it was worth more per once than Gold. The drug war is nothing more than a fight over money. Legalize drugs and over night you put evert druf dealer out of business. No one is going to buy drugs from the shady drug cartel when they can go to the local Walgreens and buy it. Take away the financial gain and you take away the reason for drug smuggling, gang wars, and narco-politics. Seriously, when is the last time someone drove passed the liquor store opting insteafd to purchase moonshine from some Hill-Billy? On the other side, people say things like well I don't want my kid to grow up in a world with drugs and we have to do something even if it doesn't completely get rid of drugs. Kid's grow up now in a world full of drugs, both legal and illegal. Passing laws making it illegal to possess or sell drugs didn't magically get rid of drugs it just gave the police the power to investigate, arrest, and imprison people who have drugs. What ruins a persons life? The physical act of smoking a joint? or the social and economic harm caused by being arrested, jailed, and forever labeled a felon. What splits up families, the Joint or the police when they drag mom or dad to prison. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. The Prohibiton of Drugs hurts America more than the Drugs every did. Isn't it time to reconsider the War on Drugs and accept that a War on drugs is really a War on the American People, and we are losing!

Im an American expat living in Prague,Czech Republic. I can say with certainty that decriminalization of small amounts of drugs for personal use works. This is backed by statistics that clearly show far fewer people using drugs per capita. It also allows law enforcement to concentrate on large dealers and importers of drugs, and not on simply arrest addicts, while the people who prey on thier addiction largely go un molested. We as a country will never, i repeat, never arrest our way out of this problem! Its time for a new approach to this problem as the policies and politics of the last 30 year "war on drugs" has been a total failure and has cost trillions that could have been much better spent towards education and treatment.

Im an American expat living in Prague, Czech Republic. I can say first hand that decriminalization of drugs does in fact work.Instead of draining resources from the budget chasing around small time users and addicts..and locking them up,the police have time and the budget to chase the big dealers and importers. You are never going to arrest your way out of a drug problem, especially when you focus on addicts. You dont lock someone up who is sick with addiction, you try and get that person help. The US "war on drugs" is a total failure, and the policies of yesterday need to be re thought.

  • Posted By: hestia_m @ 10/27/2008 9:08:38 AM

The US should legalize heroin and cocaine, and use the resulting tax revenue to help addicts. Mexico is paying too high a price for our drug addictions. It's the only moral choice.

Legalize pot and use the taxes on it to buck up Social Security and Medicaid.
