(oops!) stating that Freddie Mac was spending tax payer money to target Republicans in 2005 who were trying to regulate Fannie and Freddies fraud. Democrats were not targeted, as the were all in the tank with Fannie and Freddie to kill the regulations. Hear that, the article admits that Republicans were trying to regulate Freddie and Fannie, and Democrats were trying to stop it from happening as a means to facilitate the Community Reinvestment Act.

Stating that Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act wasn't what caused the meltdown, and noting that "economists on both sides of the political spectrum have suggested that the act has probably made the crisis less severe than it might otherwise have been."

In the exchange with "Joe the plumber" we found out that Obama really is as radical as his early political acquaintances, Davis, Ayers, Wright, etc., and that he is into the failed economic policy of wealth redistribution. Obama's tax and spending plans alone would be bad enough, but add Reid and Pelosi to the mix, with the three of them controlling both houses of Congress and the executive branch without any effective restraint, and you have something that should causes concern even among moderate Democrats.

Obama and a supermajority of Democrats simply is not the change we need, nor is it change we can afford.

Give me a break, will you please? "Obama and a supermajority of Democrats simply is not the change we need, nor is it change we can afford...." WHAT????? We've spent 6 years and nearly 8 years under the opposite majority and now we should put them all back in office for another 4 years? Look what havoc they have created and what a huge mess our country is in. We've had a Conservative Supermajority for years and they have run up the deficit, involved the country in 2 wars to the tune of 10 billion dollars of our tax money per MONTH, ignored our infrastruction, our energy needs, our health care problems, education and our standing in the world.......and we're supposed to put another conservative/Republican back in there. You are drinking far too much kool aid.....

....and who will get the credit for an economic rebound already under way before the election?

    • Posted By: peg-a-leg @ 10/28/2008 10:01:53 AM

Sorry, you're wayyyyy farrrr ahead of yourself, my Friend. Many months ahead before one can say there is any (if there even is one) rebound. This country is in such a mess economically, we don't even know all the ramifications yet......just wait......there is no quick fix.

I Love George Will! Don't always agree with him, but like the way his brain works or doesn't work, depending on my mood at the time. He should have his own program. He finally came to his senses after initially being thrilled with the Palin pick. That lasted for about 72 hours and then reality set in. This time, this election, we have no choice but to chose Obama and HOPE for the best. We can't continue the spiral downturn with a conservative/Republican in office. We NEED a change and a different direction. That's NOT saying all will be wonderful with Obama, but the country and the world NEEDS a real change. Go Obama 08!

Welcome back, George. For years, I read your columns with interest (even though I disgreed with most of your thoughts). Then you changed from a insightful and entertaining wise man to an advocate of some really terrible Bush ideas -- and now you have returned to your old form.

Keep challenging the comfortable and the certain -- we need it.

George Will is selectively focusing on bits of news. Is interesting to me that many conservatives seem to believe that there are NO consequences to what has been put in motion -- and what will surely take considerable time to unwind, turn around and later trend upwards again. Remember where we are in the current economic situation -- many companies have ALREADY stated their plans for layoffs, shipping is WAY WAY down, gasoline consumption (an important indicator of activity) is so far DOWN that OPEC was compelled to reduce delivery, nearly ALL recent earnings reports have painted a STARK FORWARD LOOKING picture...

But sure, Mr Will... Go ahead and believe that none of that will have any effect in the US or GLOBALLY.

The important questions Americans should ask themselves are: Shall we face these issues honestly and deal with them in a way that BUILDS future National strength, or shall we watch the nation ignore reality.

And yes, what is going on today is reality. The world has always had fools and realists and easily manipulated followers. Te difference in the followers today is the non-Republican ones are completely motivated by a clear agenda -- the Republican followers have been confused by fabrications and fears long enough.

George,my friend recommends that the immigration reform bill be called the Expedited Naturalization Opportunity Relief Act of 2009, or ENORA. I guess it sounds a little bit catchier than what I initially proposed. At least this way, passage of the bill would prevent any further disqualification of a future Cabinet or Suprme Court nominee should they have a Hispanic gardener, housekeeper, handyman, or nanny. God Bless America.

What if we created full employment? Is that so bad? A job for everyone. Homes for everyone is that not so bad? President Johnson wanted to end poverty. This is a good goal. Yes, capitalism is good but what about the down side? Why not help people get better? So what Oprah has a billion dollars. How can a person sleep at night knowing that babies are starving?

Which Rooseveltian interventions are we talking about? A 2008 equivalent of the Civilian Conservation Corps, to repair our infrastructure, would be a good thing. Ditto the WPA. An ivestment in our future, rather than a bailout for morally corrupt businessmen sure sounds good to me.

Mr. Will, you are articulate and thought provoking as always, but don't you think you're being a little hard on Franklin? Pushing Thanksgiving up a week hurts no one.

    Except the turkeys.

Good column, I just wish you summarized by saying that the unscrupulous foreign and domestic policies of a failed Bush administration not only contributed to our nation's economic woes, but to an American society that must change it ways in order to turn the direction of our nation around. As the saying goes, " The buck stops here", and our President has set many bad precedentsf or our nation and its citizens." God Bless America

George isn't it funny how immigration has suddenly become a non-issue this election season? Do you think it's beacuse the ecomony is tied in with everything in American culture? Do you think it's that projected $923 billion spending power of America's Hispanic population, and the $911 billion for the nation's African-American population. Now that our border is better secured, does the GOP really still want a mass deportation of these undocumented workers, or do you foresee a US Mexican Resident Naturalization Act of 2009 which proposes an expedited naturalization process (4years) for these people so they can become legal citizens and contribute to the nation's Social Security Plan, pay their fair share of taxes, be fully productive within American society, and vote in federal and state elections. Or will that "unfairly" make many Red states Blue? Gov. Matt Blunt of Missouri recently referred to the undocumented Mexican residents as , "BAD ACTORS who jeopardize our democracy", do you agree with that? These people are hard-working people, how could he say such a thing? The GOP is really out of touch.

Vaya con dios, Vaya con Obama!

Great column but your slam on Roosevelt is misleading
Unemployment was 15.9 % at the end of 1931, and more than 23 % at the end of 1932. Roosevelt elected in November, 1932 and inaguarated thefollowing year, so unemployment fell, not rose, during his first two terms. And don't forget: he was obsessed with balanced budgets until WWII, and when he did balance the budget in 1936, a recession ensued. I agree that frugality is the best way, but during a financial crisis, it can be ruinous.

ObomaYesWeCan, apparently you have never looked closely at politicians at all levels. They are some of the worst offenders for criminal and civil matters and owe not $1,200 in back taxes but hundreds of thousands. What is worse is that this information is in public records. They lie, steal, cheat and worse and are publicly chastized because of their political power. They get special treatment. But everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon and bad mount Joe the Plumber for asking a simple question of "The One" who holds himself out to be the answer to America's problems. And you should be ashamed for resorting to name calling. Grow up already!

What do you really know about Obama's economic philosophy? Since he has never run a town, state or business, he has no record to look at. Oh, he has made lots of promises, but given that he broke his promise to be limited to public campaign funds, you cant put much faith in that, and there will be no means to keep those promises anyway.

But you do know that Obama, along with his democratic buddies in Congress, personally and professionally advocated for a residential housing policy favoring forced sub-prime lending, which subsequently resulted in massive defaults and foreclosures, leading to your loss of significant equity value in your home, to the point that it destabilized your banks, which panicked the stock market, which wiped out your savings.

Look and listen to Obama for yourself. Obama in this video, addressing his community activist work and his work representing ACORN in litigation against the banks and relating to the Community Reinvestment Act, and addressing the failure of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae as those actions relate to the destruction of our economy by causing the current real estate and subsequent financial crisis, states that, and I quote:

"Subprime lending started out as a good idea, helping Americans buy homes who previously could not afford to. Financial institutions created new financial instruments that could securitize these loans, slice them into finer and finer risk categories, and spread them out among investors and around the country, as well as around the world. In theory, this should have allowed mortgage lending to be less risky, and more diversified."

Acknowledging the catastrophe, but as apologist for the Democrats, Obama then offers this justification.

"The original idea was a good one, which was, lets see if we can distribute risk more broadly, and make it easier to provide loans to people who otherwise might not be able to get one."

Yah, great idea. Economically unsound, but embraced by Obama. Listen for yourself. You cannot dispute the mans on words recorded live:
