Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla from 1996 to 2002. Her record during that time can tell us a lot about her. The biggest deal during her tenure is perhaps the construction of the sports complex that was built on someone else's land. She had to raise sales taxes to pay for it. The whole episode of incompetence, arrogance, and lack of respect for the law is exactly the style of governance that we've seen from Bush and co in the past seven years.
The $15 million multi-use indoor ice arena was supposed to be her legacy as the mayor. This was a very big deal for a city that had a budget of $3.9 million in 96 (increased to $5.8 million in 2002). Although the city subsidy has gone down from the initial $600k per year to about $125k per year, the sports complex still does not break even.
The biggest problem, however, was the process of how the land was acquired. The whole thing was handled with exceptional incompetence and arrogance, ultimately costing the city an extra $1.7 million in settlement and court cost for a piece of land that would have costed only $125k if they had handled it right from the beginning in 1998.
This involved a developer by the name of Gary Lundgren. Here is the whole scoop:
Lundgren negotiated with the national office of The Nature Conservancy to buy the land. Meanwhile, Wasilla city officials decided they wanted the land too, and began negotiating with the Alaska office of The Nature Conservancy. Offers were extended to both parties. Lundgren closed the deal.
Without the title in their hands, the city went ahead with the sales tax increase and started the construction. Then in typical Bush fashion, as Palin was leaving office in 2002,
Wasilla sued both Lundgren and The Nature Conservancy for title to the land. The case went to a federal appeals court, where Lundgren won rights to the property.
The court case was finally settled several years after Palin left.
The real legacy is, that the city is still paying for this today, while having to cut budget in library service, postponing capital improvement projects, and raising fees.
Can we afford this kind of incompetence on the national level?

We will have another 2 more years of a depressive economy. America will wake up from the hangover and vote Republican. Socialist programs make people like me pay for them. Why? Because 1) I make less than 250K (the real people who are paying into the system) and 2) I am single. That alone makes me pay more.
I am the population paying for these socialistic programs that benefit people who are not even US CITIZENS. Now the Dems want to give people who do not pay Social Security, our hard earned monies. That is not a lie. I work in local government and we have programs for immigrants to come here get monies and send them home to their mother countries. That is another reason our economy is in the toilet. This is all true. So don't even try to say otherwise. Its disgusting what I see yet I have to administer the injustice of all the hypocricy in the name of the federal government.

Damn, that's all they've got.

-Those making between $250,000 and $400,000 annually will have less than $1,500 increase in their taxes. (These people are not complaining. "Joe the plummer" is not in this income bracket.)

The republicans DOUBLED the National Debt in the last eight years. That is a $5,000,000,000,000.00 increase.

Remember, in 1992 the republicans were saying the same thing about Clintons policies as they are about Obamas now.

And Clintons policies created the best economy of the last 50 years, CUT the National Debt and handed Bush a SURPLUS.

On the Oct 12 version of ABC This Week, it came out that in March 2007, five months after democrats won control of congress, they (democrats) passed the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac regulation bill.

Also, Obama has stated any new spending will be paid for with cuts.

In stark contrast: The republicans paid for nothing. That is why they doubled the deficit increasing it $5,000,000,000,000 during total republican rule.

What do you really know about Obama's economic philosophy? Since he has never run a town, state or business, he has no record to look at. Oh, he has made lots of promises, but given that he broke his promise to be limited to public campaign funds, you cant put much faith in that, and there will be no means to keep those promises anyway.

But you do know that Obama, along with his democratic buddies in Congress, personally and professionally advocated for a residential housing policy favoring forced sub-prime lending, which subsequently resulted in massive defaults and foreclosures, leading to your loss of significant equity value in your home, to the point that it destabilized your banks, which panicked the stock market, which wiped out your savings.

Look and listen to Obama for yourself. Obama in this video, addressing his community activist work and his work representing ACORN in litigation against the banks and relating to the Community Reinvestment Act, and addressing the failure of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae as those actions relate to the destruction of our economy by causing the current real estate and subsequent financial crisis, states that, and I quote:

"Subprime lending started out as a good idea, helping Americans buy homes who previously could not afford to. Financial institutions created new financial instruments that could securitize these loans, slice them into finer and finer risk categories, and spread them out among investors and around the country, as well as around the world. In theory, this should have allowed mortgage lending to be less risky, and more diversified."

Acknowledging the catastrophe, but as apologist for the Democrats, Obama then offers this justification.

"The original idea was a good one, which was, lets see if we can distribute risk more broadly, and make it easier to provide loans to people who otherwise might not be able to get one."

Obama's ill-conceived programs will require him to tax, and his health care plan alone is a substantial hidden tax on all business, large an small. In reality, it does not really matter who he taxes, those taxes are going to be passed through the economy. He has to tax, because it is they only way he can pay for his massive social engineering experiments. Any first year economics student knows that taxation is a tool used to contract an economy experiencing inflation, because it reduces demand by reducing the amount of money individuals and businesses have to spend. It is contractionary, which is exactly what you do not want to do when the problem is that the economy is contracting already into recession. Like Hoover and FDR, Obama's plans will only make it worse for longer.

How many full-time employees with benefits does a person with a $50,000 income personally employ? For most, none. How many does a person with $250,000 employ? One less under Obama???s tax plan, two less if you include Obama???s health plan.
