I guess that living wage includes cell phone, cable tv (or dish), new car (SUV that is) and all the pizza you can eat. Nobody works long for less than it costs to live. It is a complete oxymoron. Oh but wait, our friends at ACORN are paying $8 per hour with benifits?? Oh, I forgot, since they are "doing good things" they don't have to pay "living wages". Thank goodness we live in America, the greatest place on earth to be "poor".....

Great article!! This hits the nail right on the head of what the problem really is. As my roomate so accurately put it: they are in bed together. However, I looked at the chart for FedEx and all I see during Bush's presidency, is a continuation of steady incline that seems to have started in the Clinton era. The shares tripled under Clinton and Bush. Am I missing something?

If WalMart, Target and Home Depot paid a living wage with a decent healthcare and pension plan, they would have nothing to fear from unions. When Big Business execs put personal gain over public good, it won't be long before nobody can afford to make non-essential purchases. Discretionary spending by the middle class is what keeps this economy going. Without it, there will soon be nothing for the fatcats to horde.

corn is just another invented issue.
All the group does is register new voters . They pay people 8 bucks a hour a help people
fill out registration forms and then turn them in. By law they are required to turn in ballots people fill out that dont seem credible. But they seperate them from the normal ballots and inform election officials when they turn them in. As a example If somone fills out a ballot that says donald duck they still have to turn that ballot in , but since there really is no donald duck and no one to show up and vote with a id that matches that registration on election day . It will have zero effect on anything and all this is is a waste time
Also all ballots acorn marks as fishy are also investigated and checked against state records to make sure they are real people if not they are thrown out.
Its has no effect because no one can vote without proper ID
So unless the gop thinks there are imaginary people to go along with with throw away ballots then
lets move on to something that matters like the fact we are going in to the next great depression,
and that mccain says he doesnt understand the economy
How about we talk about the war, the national debt <11 trillion>, The housing market, the job market, health care, global warming.
Are things so great we need to invent issues like acorn ?
or is it the gop has no answers to the mess they have created in the last 8 years?
Let talk about things that will improve our lifes and not something no one cares about.
And lets throw out the poeple that created this mess
they dont deserve a chance to make things worse

Please vote early election day will be a mess

Oh, and lets not forget unions. That will certainly help business, just ask GM.

Speaking of Unions. I love this: "Employee Free Choice Act, "which would do away with secret balloting and allow unions to form if a majority of employees sign cards favoring unionization." Now, don't get me wrong. EFCA may be a disaster for retailers.". Let's get more basic. The Patriot Act has been railed against for years because it MIGHT take away some freedoms for some people. These have accustaions have never really proven to be true, and people enjoy all the freedoms they always have. This "Free Choice Act" DIRECTLY takes AWAY one of our most BASCI RIGHTS! The right to vote through a secret ballot. Where in the hell is the out cry from the left? This is the biggest glare of hypocrisy that I can recall seeing. What the hell is with the name. Let's change Guatanamo Bay's name to "Disney Resort - Cuba". That's not as ludicrous as the "Employee Free Choice Act" which leaves employees with NO free choice. Take our money and take our freedoms. As long as it's done by someone labeled as democrat, the left has no problem with it. You want to talk about religious zealousy. It doesn't get any worse than the left who cannot see that when something is wrong, it's wrong no matter WHICH party is guilty. Total intellectual immaturity.

???To take from one, because it is thought his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, the guarantee to everyone the free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it.??? ??? Thomas Jefferson, letter to Joseph Milligan, April 6, 1816

Now under Obama's plan we have increased corporate taxes, pay roll taxes, capital gains taxes, and income taxes. NONE of those are good for business. It's great for illegal immigrants who I'm sure will not have an incentive to cross the border and get a gov't check. How daft is this author? I can't find any economist who agrees that any of Obama's fiscal policies will help the economy. Even the Messiah himself has said he may have to delay the tax increases because of the soft economy. In other words, his policies are bad for the economy in general, and would be devastating when the economy is weak. Still can't figure out why?

  • Posted By: Syrin23 @ 10/31/2008 1:09:21 PM

Is the author really that naive? Why would corporate America fear Obama? Let's see. Increased pay roll taxes, increased corporate taxes, increased income taxes, and increased capital gains taxes, all advocated by Obama. Name which one of those is good for business, especially in light of a weak economy. Small businesses will be crushed. My business has already looked at how much will be saved by not providing benefits for emplyees and how many we could lay off and still function. The end result of socialism. Let's see what our founding fathers say:

???To take from one, because it is thought his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, the guarantee to everyone the free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it.??? ??? Globalization is doomed to failure and the pro-globalization movement by Congress and the executive administrations over the past 20 years are now bearing their fruits of economic disaster. When you export your manufacturing base and infrstructure of workers in the name of lower wages and bigger profits, this is what happens. The motive is greed and the result is an eroding economic base in the country that made that greed possible.Eventually the economy will erode enough to degrade our military capacity and ability to protect those assets we shipped so eagerly overseas. Without military clout to back them up unscrupulous nations will seize those assets simply because they can. Remember Cuba circa 1955? I think it s proposterous to blame one party or the other for the economic mess when both have held power over this period and promoted this mess we are now in. It will take a complete overhaul of executive and legislative leadership to unseat the pro-globalization movement fueld by greedy corporations. Only a smaller less powerful federal government with a balanced federal budget and fair trade deals that generate a trade surplus can we being to dig out the economic mess we are in.

Comment: Obama has 63 Nobel Laureates working on his policy team. They are developing a plan to push America back to the top. Who is responsible for McCain's planning? Americans would be shocked to find that Douglas Holtz-Eakin is the sole person responsible for planning McCain's policy for America's future. Holtz-Eakin is also McCain's economic advisor, filling two full time positions on McCain's team. How can one single man (an economist) be responsible for developing a viable technology plan for our future? Obama has an enormous pool of the most intelligent, talented men and women in America working for him. Soon, they will be working for US.

And let's not forget that the McCain campaign spent more on Palin's makeup artist than it did on it's foreign policy advisor. When you pay your makeup artist DOUBLE what you pay your foreign policy advisor, it is time to start examining your PRIORITIES.

You look just fine without makeup, John. And Sarah is young enough not to need any. So cut the crap, and start paying some good ECONOMIC ADVISORS so you can have a fiscal plan to present to America. We're in the middle of a huge global financial meltdown, and you are worried about hair and makeup? PLEASE start worrying about the middle class, John. Please.

Big corporations love the GOP because the GOP always wipes out regualtions to keep the big corporations and their robber baron leaders to make money like crazy while screwing the rest of us. The GOP cuts regulations so the cheaters can cheat without worry of getting thrown in prioson where so many belong but so few ever get penalized with. The US Chamber of Commerce is sick with it's blatant support of the worst political party that allows corporate criminals to work their evil ways without government interference.

We need Obama to get into the White House to clean up corporate America with new regulations that will penalize them for doing illegal scams on us. We need to ensure that coirporations pay their fair share of taxes by not allowing some like Halliburton to go offshore merely to evade paying US corporate taxes while getting billions in no bid contracts. Time to clean up Wall Street and kick the corporate criminals out and send them to prison.

    THE GREAT BUSH DEPRESSION
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
He perfectly predicted the current meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen next
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything seen in generations
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand how its been broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use quantum mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He was the last to know somthing was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. Check out this link to the truth http://my.barackobama.com/keatingvideo
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a budget surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that
Stand up and hold them accountable
Bush isn't on the ballot this year but his policies are
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

Why, because now there is proof. In the exchange with "Joe the plumber" Obama unintentionally revealed that he really is as radical as his early political acquaintances, Davis, Ayers, Wright, etc., (gee, there sure seem to be a lot of them) and that he is into the failed economic policy of wealth redistribution. Now there is absolute proof. In 2001, Obama, the "community organizer" turned legislator, said in an interview:

"And I think one of the tragedies of the civil rights movement was that the civil rights movement became so court-focused, I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and organizing activities on the ground that are able to bring about the coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive change, and in some ways we still suffer from that,"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iivL4c_3pck

    2001 Chicago Public Radio Interview.

Obama's tax and spending plans alone would be bad enough, but add Reid and Pelosi to the mix, with the three of them controlling both houses of Congress and the executive branch without any effective restraint, and you have something that should causes concern even among moderate Democrats.
See Wall Street Journal: A Liberal Supermajority:

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122420205889842989.html

Indeed, some democrats are publically saying as much. See Barney Franks comments on the news, including face the nation last week, stating essentially that Democrats in Congress intend to greatly raise taxes and go on a spending spree.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1Mazjm_A5k

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJGnSAlqjoU

    See http://www.taxfoundation.org/blog/show/23617.html

Obama's ill-conceived programs will require him to tax, and his health care plan alone is a substantial hidden tax on all business, large an small. In reality, it does not really matter who he taxes, those taxes are going to be passed through the economy. He has to tax, because it is they only way he can pay for his massive social engineering experiments. Any first year economics student knows that taxation is a tool used to contract an economy experiencing inflation, because it reduces demand by reducing the amount of money individuals and businesses have to spend. It is contractionary, which is exactly what you do not want to do when the problem is that the economy is contracting already into recession. Like Hoover and FDR, Obama's plans will only make it worse for longer.

    See e.g. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/10/03/opinion/main4499465.shtml
    And

The democrats failed social engineering policies are what brought us to ruin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr1M1T2Y314&feature=related
Even Bill Clinton says so. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsynspIqAoE
Obama and a supermajority of Democrats simply is not the change we need, nor is it change we can afford.

That's sort of like asking why white residents of the Gulf Coast prefer the GOP, even though there were far fewer destructive hurricanes during Clinton's administration. It's as if the author is arguing, "Clearly, the Democratic Party has a better record for preventing hurricanes."

    • Posted By: nosemajd @ 10/30/2008 6:59:15 PM

Actually the hurricanes were even more destructive under Clinton (measured in wind force) and more numerous, only FEMA was run by professionals and the disasters weren't viewed as profit centers ("disaster capitalism"), so nobody really noticed how disasterous they were. It was the clean-up that was disasterous, due to the rampant "Crony Capitalism" under Bush.

Let me get this straight. Major corporations are too stupid to understand what will hurt them...? Interestingly, what hurts Wal-Mart (et al) is likely to hurt its shoppers.

    • Posted By: Lee Holmes @ 10/29/2008 7:13:42 PM

And here is the clincher. WAL-MART,while it may be ''for the Red'',has actually remained in the Black all through this economic crisis. Why? Cheaper goods and services for consumers that will be wrecked under the schemes Democrats are pursuing that Gross simply fails to acknowlage. It is no secret whatever that the Democrats are seeking to unionize the WAL-MARTS and their associated-style companies that will ruin this economy ever further. Want more evidence?

You do not see the non-unions like WAL-MART going begging to the government for handouts like the unionized auto industry.

      • Posted By: tadathan @ 10/30/2008 4:02:10 AM

Not true. Walmart is actually one of the biggest subsidy accepting us business. Walmart pitts towns against each other and demands subsidies, tax shelters and even for local government to pay for their building costs. It also gets payment from the US gov to train people (train to do what?). Also Walmart transfers cost to US taxpayers, encouraging employees to sign up for food stamps and welfare so they don't have to pay living wages. Walmart is poisonous dead weight to the us economy. You sir are ignorant.

        • Posted By: Lee Holmes @ 10/30/2008 6:41:55 PM

Yeah,in fact,it is. GM alone looks to a bailout worth tens of billions. WAL-MART does not even come close. WAL-MART is making a profit. The Big Three are all in decline[and all are unionized]. Nor do you see the Japanese auto plants in the US looking for any handouts on the scale GM demands either. Yet they are not unionized, yet pay good wages and benefits to their workers. You will be reminded that places like Flynt Michigan and four other cities located in the union rust belt were voted by the National Assn.of Realtors as the five worst places in America to live in 2008. You wanna eat sand while having your head buried in it,be my guest.

      • Posted By: tadathan @ 10/30/2008 3:55:50 AM

Not true Walmart takes more subsidies that almost any american business. Walmart will pit towns against each other to ensure low/no taxes and even for towns to pay for their buildings. Walmart even shifts cost to taxpayers by encourages employees to sign up for foodstamps and wellfare instead of paying living wages. You sir are ignorant.

Obama makes Bill Belichek look like an angel with all these disturbing videos floating around of

It???s pretty easy for Obama or anyone else to attack George Bush on his economic policies but Obama can't attack George Bush on his record on fighting terrorists to protect America while he

just another attempt by newsweek to give a boost to obambam. if they bothered to check, over the past 20-30 years, the fortune 500 either split their donations between the 2 parties, or have favored the dems. reason: the dems are more receptive to protectionist policies and government intervention to cover for bad or poor management decisions, thus insulating them from the real world of competitive business. it's easier to scream for government protection than make good management decisions, and focus on providing a quality product at a price the customer (retail or commercial) is willing to pay.

Another thought is that Dem's success comes from Rep's hard work. Basically the building blocks are laid and the next party reaps the rewards. Good thing we still have 2 parties... Regarding unions, I only hope someday they will "partner" with management for the betterment of the company (after all it is the brand that pays them, not the current management) rather than their members. Just because you can extract concessions from a management with no long term interests does not make it any better when the company is run into the ground (see our auto industry).
We are in such a state of change with globalization. It is an ongoing force that benifits all of humanity in the long run and cannot be stopped (only slowed to the long term detriment of those who try). No party can control it, only all of us together can. I have yet to see the shopper who (given the choice) is willing to buy the same item for more money on a consistent basis in everything that they do.
Labor should see itself as a division of management, the personnel dept. Should that dept sustain activities contrary to the long term interests of the company? Then again, don't bore me with tomorrow....
