Excerpt from a post down below:

These self-proclaimed PROGRESSIVE THINKERS truly believe that they are the enlightened ones and that "we" conservative/traditionalist are just a bunch of old and out-of-touch dinosaurs.

NOT! I absolutely refuse to let these ELITISTS silence me. Or tell me how to think! Please do not let these folks play you. In other words, try to make you feel guilty about standing up for your beliefs i.e., TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE, etc!

Elitists? I love how you've been brainwashed to believe that it is the Democratic Party that is made up of elitists. Just ignore the fact that your Party is represented by a majority of rich white men who have come from a long line of powerful, rich, white men...but yet it's the Democrats who are the elitists. Do you just repeat whatever word you hear your candidate say? ELITIST, SOCIALIST, TERRORIST, WEALTH SPREADER...we know there are much worse things they would love to say but of course the liberal media won't allow them to get away with things that you would hear at your regular KKK meeting.

Who is trying to silence you anyway? The more you speak the more people that will move away from your way of thinking because it's all ignorance.

        Exactly.

  • Posted By: Alegria7 @ 10/29/2008 1:03:16 PM

    This applies to all Americans:

"The U.S. government was based on Judeo-Christian values whether you think so or not. Equality in the constitution was based on the biblical concept of equality. If you want to separate our Constitution and Christianity, forget it. The Bible is ingrained in the Constitution and is it's foundation of those that wrote it. Accept it or not."

    • Posted By: elithian @ 10/29/2008 1:22:16 PM

Apparently trhis writer has not read the writings of our founding fathers who drafted and crafted the our constitution. There is a deliberate effort to separate church and state as opposed to joining them by not declaring a recognized religeon, but instead declaring religeous freedom.
It was the specific intent of the constitutional framers to prohibit the practice of punishing anyone for their beliefs.
To the extent they acknowledged the Divine, they do so non-denominationally to include those who do not believe at all. While God is the essential thread in the fabric of creation, I see no indication he has proclaimed a specific preference in spite of what others would have me believe. As it stands today, his grace shines on everything and everyone under the sun; even the nonbelievers.

      • Posted By: JJMizzou @ 10/29/2008 1:30:12 PM

Elithean- You stated "It was the specific intent of the constitutional framers to prohibit the practice of punishing anyone for their beliefs."
But you think its so awesome that Newsweek goes after Palin's beliefs. I know liberals are hypocrites, but you shouldn't be so open about it.

    • Posted By: C. MacLean @ 10/29/2008 1:19:55 PM

      Biblical concept of equality? Huh?

The Bible has many concepts, but equality isn't one.

Women were not equal to men, slaves were not equal to masters, and non-believers aren't equal to believers. No equality here.

Which is why the Constitution guards against creating a state religion. Our Founding Fathers understood very clearly why religion needs to be separate from government.

This is why so many people are leary of Sarah Palin - we think she will allow her religious beliefs to infringe on our rights, and in particular, we think her ideas about inevitability about the end of days will influence her decisions in very negative ways.

And yes, those questions are fair and appropriate in an election - look how many people felt strongly about Rev. Wright's anti-white bias - it was legitimate to question whether Obama had the same beliefs, and it is legitimate to question Palin's beliefs.

It is unfortunate that the writers of this article were so patronizing and condescending about Christianity - people are reacting to a criticism of their religious beliefs when what we should be reacting to is the question of whether or not Palin can keep her dogma out of her office.

I believe that Obama, McCain, and Biden can keep their beliefs separate - I believe Palin can't, and that scares me. I also believe she will try to impose her beliefs (creationism, anti-abortion, etc). on others, and that is where I draw the line.

I don't care what she believes as long as she doesn't require me to believe it, too.

It is so very obvious that Palin believes that everything is about Sarah Palin and she thinks that is the way it should be. How does the Republican Party come up with these people? The Republican Party literally does not offer the responsible approach to solve the problems at hand; their thinking has proven to be part of the problem. They have continually advocated deregulation, open markets and free trade without the checks and balances, control and enforcement required to avoid the regrettably naturally occurring greed, self-interests and dishonesty that we have just seen. It is simply their intent to encourage and facilitate without restriction, as part of their philosophy, the select few to excel, to be aggressive and to take advantage of every opportunity ??? which in turn encourages the negatives mentioned above and then empowers the aggressive, arrogant, self-focused and even dishonest individuals, like GWBush, DCheney, KRove, TDeLay and Sarah Palin to name a few. Even their strong supporters can display these personalities ??? RLimbaugh, SHannity, BO???Riely and EHasselbeck as examples. The Republican Party focuses on benefit for the select few and gives apathy, subterfuge and the costs to the rest. As we clearly see today, they have become the party of dirty politics depending on lies, manipulation, and scare and smear tactics, without ever having honest and real solutions. John McCain himself is simply impulsive and just jumps to whatever position he feels will be more favorable to him; which is how he conducted himself at the academy, in the Navy (being what he said got him shot down and a POW) and as demonstrated throughout his career, including his selection of Sarah Palin. The point being that McCain and Palin don???t offer what is needed now and just can???t be trusted to provide other than more of the same. Fortunately Obama and Bidden have demonstrated that they do offer the conscientious, well thought out, cautious, concerned and responsible approach with the needed solutions. The Republican Party should now be encouraged to step back and reorganize, to regain the conscience they once had, to move more towards center and to gain the will to benefit all of the people; they should simply be beaten soundly in this election.

It is great to see one of the candidates really going to church,. The laying on of hands is great. she seeks her blessing from God and makes sure she is protected from evil. Get a life who ever wrote this stupid letter. Obviously your not a true christain.

    • Posted By: elpaulito @ 10/29/2008 9:56:01 AM

All these chrisitans in here sound like the mullahs in the middle east. "Non-believer" this, and "infidel" that. How sad that they feel everyone needs to be of their point of view. I am an atheist, and quite proud not to drink the kool-aid. BUT, I however do not mind other people practicing their faith. But, when they want to blanket me with it, pay taxes for it (faith based funding), and teach creationism in schools, well, sorry, you lost me. Radical religion has done nothing for the human race. It causes divisions, even between different sects of religion (protestants and catholics, shia and sunni etc...), not to mention the amount of killing done in the name of god, even though god strictly forbids to do so.

      • Posted By: viler @ 10/29/2008 1:26:00 PM

God did allow war in the Bible and Jesus said he did not come to bring peace but salvation and that it would bring division. Because he knew some would reject Him. It would help you to read the word of God. The reason this country came about was for us to be able to serve our Lord. Now we take Him out and its going to be another Sodam and Gamora SP? sad. The only peace he promised was in our hearts if we allow Him in it.

wow, you are completely brainwashed and you are a racist. Anyone who thinks a country should be run by religious fundamentalists is just ignorant. Obama is a Christian. It's people like Palin and Bush who try to change the constitution. progressive tax plans in the USA were creater by Teddy Rosevelt, McCain's republican hero. Guess he was a socialist too. It's is really a shame I have to live in a country with so many people who thought Bush deserved to be prez when he so obviously was a terrible choice. You are all the same fools who would put someone like Palin in. You were so wize in your choices over the last 8 years.

to answer lou7don @ 10/29/2008 12:26:15 PM - yes, Sarah Palin (and many that think the bible is a step-by-step operators manual rather than a simple user guide) believes the earth was created by God in recent history (within the last 10,000 years) and doesn't believe dinosaurs walked the earth millions of years ago. But she does believe in witches - and thinks there are only bad witches, no good witches. There is a heaven and a hell, and God will send you to hell if you don't believe in him and worship him. And he will come to earth (or send his dead son) and ravage the planet leaving only God-fearing pious people alive.

So we've got a vain, angry god being worshipped by a scared woman who has nuclear weapons... great.

Reread again what you wrote regarding the prayer. They were not invoking witchcraft but asking it to leave. Is English your second language or what?

I am a Pentecostal and find this article extremely offensive. What kind of responsible journalist would attack the beliefs of an entire denomination of people? I find it interesting that so many Democrats talk about being open minded and accepting of others, until their views differ or they lack understanding. It might really benefit Ms. Miller & Mr. Murr to actually attend a Pentecostal service and experience the spiritual enlightenment that millions across the world already have before condemning them -- no a Youtube video doesn't count! It is not a coincidence that so many people from every walk of life and every corner of the world have experienced the infilling of the Holy Spirit and have spoken with other tongues as the Bible also testifies to. It is an arrogant person that condemns and mocks something / someone without full understanding. The laying on of hands is both symbolic and biblical in the process of invoking Christ's blessings upon someone, healing, ordination of ministers, etc. This practice is observed throughout the world and by many religions. I do not believe in Catholicism, but I do not degrade Catholics. I don't interpret the Bible as the Church of Christ, but I respect them nonetheless. I do find it ironic that I have not heard one word about Obama's religious beliefs, even though his pastor has spewed such hatred and contempt for white people and America in general. Since when is it ok to attack people's religious beliefs? What? Muslims, Catholics, Baptists, Church of Scientology, Adventists, etc. are all protected, but attacking Pentecostals in acceptable? If you want to attack Sarah Palin on her record, her experience or her policy proposals, then you have every right to do so. Attacking her family and her religious beliefs should be off limits. This goes to show you that the liberal media is willing to stoop to any lows to bring down Republicans in this election. Newsweek should be ashamed!

    My dear American commentator,
This issue has not started with Sarah Palin and will not end with her if she does become Vice President of The United States. This Issue has been ongoing far longer than the time we were born and will continue to cloud the political arena till our deaths. Please mind my saying so. Thank you.

Comment: Wow! She went up for prayer to receive blessings and protection and suddenly it's the Great American Inquisition! I can see that leap of logic if a reasonably mainstream Christian becomes Vice President for a 4 year term. I'm pretty sure Hitler had to work pretty long and hard to achieve his hate filled goals. I don't think the path to domination and destruction is Hockey Mom -> School Council -> Mayor -> Govenor -> Vice President -> Dictator Wielding the Ax of DOOM to ALL Unsuspecting and Innocent UNBELIEVERS..... I think we have a fairly good system in place that involves elections every 4 years.

  • Posted By: pborglum @ 10/29/2008 1:20:24 PM

There is nothing wrong with that prayer. You have it all wrong and you need to read what you wrote again. What he prayed meant that he was asking the Lord to rebuke witch craft. He wasn't invoking it. Is English your second language?

  • Posted By: the right answer @ 10/29/2008 12:24:15 PM

    Part 2 of 3
Faith is a belief in the trustworthiness of an idea. Formal usage of the word "faith" is usually reserved for concepts of religion, as in theology, where it almost universally refers to a trusting belief in a transcendent reality, or else in a Supreme Being and said being's role in the order of transcendent, spiritual things.

Informal usage of the word "faith" can be quite broad, and may be used standardly in place of either as "trust," "belief," or "hope". For example, the word "faith" can refer to a religion itself or to religion in general.. As with "trust," faith involves a concept of future events or outcomes.

There exists a wide spectrum of opinion with respect to the epistemological validity of faith. On one extreme is logical positivism, which denies the validity of any beliefs held by faith; on the other extreme is fideism, which holds that true belief can only arise from faith, because reason and evidence cannot lead to truth. Some foundationalists, such as St. Augustine of Hippo and Alvin Plantinga, hold that all of our beliefs rest ultimately on beliefs accepted by faith. Others, such as C. S. Lewis, hold that faith is merely the virtue by which we hold to our reasoned ideas, despite moods to the contrary.

A certain number of religious rationalists, as well as non-religious people, criticize implicit faith as being irrational, and see faith as ignorance of reality: a strong belief in something with no evidence. Bertrand Russell used to note that no one speaks of faith in the existence of such entities as gravity or electricity; rather, resorts to arguing faith occur only when evidence or logic fails. The issue is more than theoretical. People can agree on the reality of that which is evidential or reasonable, but what is based on faith is not usually communicable except by common inculcation, which makes faith a divider and thus a phenomenon commonly correlated to intolerance and warfare. In the rationalist view, belief should be restricted to what is directly supportable by logic or scientific evidence

Defenders of faith say that belief in scientific evidence is itself based on faith ??? in positivism; yet they do not themselves defy reason by walking off cliffs out of faith in divine intervention. Others claim that faith is perfectly compatible with and does not necessarily contradict reason, "faith" meaning an assumed belief. Many Jews, Christians and Muslims claim that there is adequate historical evidence of their God's existence and interaction with human beings. As such, they may believe that there is no need for "faith" in God in the sense of belief against or despite evidence; rather, they hold that evidence is sufficient to demonstrate that their God probably exists or certainly exists.

It is a shame that we can give a pass to a candidate like Barack Obama, whose pastor absolutely hates America and preaches God $%$# America and accuses the US govt of introducing aids and crack into black society and accuse a genuine Christian like Sarah Palin of being a right wing nut! I'm alot more afraid of a candidate whose pastor pals around with Lewis Farrakhan and Khadafi, than I am of a bible beleiving Pentacostal service. Last time I checked, no Pentacostals or Christians flew planes into our buildings! They are instead the people who built this country and spilled their blood for the right to free speech that these arrogant jerks enjoy. I do not trust Barack Obama or anyone he aligns himself with. When is the last time you saw a heartfelt message from him talking about how great America is? You didn't and you wont. God give us a leader who will bring out the greatness in Americans, not take us down the path of Socialism!!!

So, you don't Trust Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Colin Powell, Senator Luger, and many other conservative leaders who are his advisors. Would we have been so lucky that Bush would have listened to them instead of the lying pack of dogs he has been listening to. We might not be in Iraq, Osama bin laden might be dead, the economy might not be crashed, and our blood and treasure might not have been squandered into the coffers of Haliburton. If the average citizen was only smart enough to see the truth?

I assume that you are ignoring the four generals who back McCain then "elithean". Why does Obama have to put so much stock into the people who support him? Most of his friends who helped him get into the Senate, he has now thrown to the curb (at least publicly)- see Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, Father Flager, etc. He'll do the same to Powell and Buffett. They are just stepping stones to his ultimate goal.

Just one more time. Please read this carefully, our humanity makes us one!
This is the scariest information I have heard of Palin so far. Does she really believe that the earth was created 6 thousand years ago? Does she believe in dinosaurs? I surely hope she does. Is she going to become the modern American Inquisition (Opposed to the Spanish Inquisition) on earth to destroy and torture loving spiritual movements such as Paganism, which by the way predates all monotheistic religions on earth. Does she honestly believe in the fairy tale witches such as the one that gave the apple to sleeping beauty so that she sleep until her true love gave her a kiss. Would she kill and torture innocents such as the poor individuals in Salem, MA. due to heresy and Witchcraft. Which in this modern age the truth of this hysteria has been uncovered? Is she living in a world full of fantasy and horrific dreams made up by religious zealots? It makes me wonder if in the 21 century in this wonderful World that we all share, the powers that may become a reality revert America the Great to the Dark Age due to a lack of historical knowledge and the lies for power founded by past conquistadors based on deception and bigotry that this poor woman has been exposed to herself will dominate American minds. Is that what you really want as an American? Really ask yourself this question over and over again. Is that who you want in power?
This issue has not started with Sarah Palin and will not end with her if she does become Vice President of The United States. This Issue has been ongoing far longer than the time we were born and will continue to cloud the political arena till our deaths. Please mind my saying so. Thank you.

What sparked this whole article appears to be the words of a Kenyan pastor while speaking a blessing over Palin's upcoming administration. How is Palin responsible for the words spoken by a Kenyan pastor? How does that automatically translate into her beliefs and make her a nut? That is just plain ole' bad journalism. Doesn't anybody else see the irony? Let's see... it was a Kenyan pastor,,,Obama's part Kenyan so by the logic used in this article that would make Obama a nut too! Phew! The New Yorker Sarah Palin Admits Alaska is a [Socialist State]

In a Special Campaign Comment, Keith Olbermann cites yet another example of the McCain campaign accusing Barack Obama of something of which they themselves are guilty. In this case, Sarah Palin is accusing Barack Obama of advocating socialism when she literally used that word to describe the collective wealth sharing in her home state of

Sarah Palin acknowledges that Alaska is literally the only [Socialist State in America]

Initial post: Oct 28, 2008 12:18 PM PDT

    Stout House says:

Somebody pointed this out on another thread, but it bears repeating.

In a New Yorker interview before her selection as VP nominee Sarah Palin said of Alaska, "we're set up, unlike other states in the union, where it's collectively Alaskans who own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs."

Got that? Share in the wealth, or "spread the wealth around."

I expect this to show up in an Obama ad very soon. It's utterly devastating to Palin's false "socialist" accusations against Obama.

Unlike Obama's plan to restore the Clinton-era tax structure by cutting taxes for the middle class and allowing the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 1 percent to expire (resulting in a roughly 4 percent tax increase for the rich),

Palin's Alaska is the closest thing we have to ACTUAL [Socialism] in America, because, as Palin herself points out, the state owns the resources, a citizens' collective, and those citizens benefit from the government's "spreading the wealth around."

I hope the Obama campaign seizes on this instantly and pours millions into ads.

Here's a link to the interview in which Palin acknowledges that she's a [Socialist]...

    http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/09/22/080922fa_fact_gourevitch?printable=true

And here's a video compilation in which the she slams Obama for saying (but definitely not meaning in the same way) the very same thing:

    http://thinkprogress.org/2008/10/27/palin-shares-wealth/

    From the Think Progress page:

"In fact, Alaska's Clear and Equitable Share (ACES) program, which manages the redistribution of oil wealth in Alaska, brings in so much money that the state needs no income or sales tax. In addition, this year ACES will provide every Alaskan with a check for an estimated [$3,200]"

Palin's running the biggest welfare state in the nation by means of the socialist redistribution of wealth, and she's stupid enough to make false accusations against Obama? Truly astonishing, but not at all surprising. That's what happens when you don't vet properly, Senator McCain.
