Even committed Republicans who support McCain are asking themselves if they really would take the risk of putting our country into Sarah Palin's hands. Many prominent Republicans, including Colin Powell, have said that Palin is not prepared to be Vice President. Being VP requires a depth of knowledge on national and international issues. Palin is ignorant of these matters. Being President requires great intelligence and a clear-eyed world view, one untainted by religious fanaticism. Look at the mess we got with the under-qualified Dubya, and even he seems smarter and less fanatical than Palin. McCain is 72 years old, with high cholesterol and high blood pressure; his father and grandfather each died of heart attacks at age 72. McCain's Vice President HAS to be ready to lead. And by lead, I am not referring to a full speed charge into Armageddon.

For those of you who don't know, Palin belongs to a fundamentalist church that believes the end of the world is near: that war, financial distress and famine will kill off the sinful non-believers, and that when this holocaust occurs all good Christians will be taking refuge in Alaska. Furthermore, her church conducts witch hunts -- they actually use prayer to locate "witches" in their community, then publicly brand them as witches, and hold them responsible for everything that goes wrong in town. (Honestly, I think the long winters must be getting to their minds.) You can go on YouTube and watch videos of Palin participating during sermons like this. She stands on the altar facing the members. The congregation stands with outstretched hands, trancelike, speaking in tounges while the priest prays to "keep Sarah safe from all forms of witchcraft."

Could you REALLY feel comfortable knowing that a woman who holds these beliefs would have the power to declare war and deploy nuclear missiles?

I lost all respect for Powell when he sold his soul to the W Administration and then sold us all a bill of goods (crock) on the Iraq War. It's funny how all you Libs suddenly see him as a prominent Republican now that he's endorsed Obama. Hmmm.... once foe ... now friend??? Go figure!

Basically what i am getting from this is she is being blessed to keep evil from her. "Witch" to me is better than a preacher preaching such hatred. At least she is not going to a church that preaches hatred toward any race. So if anyone is a "NUT CASE" That would be Pastor "Wrong" Wright. Really people keep digging to find something that is so wrong with Sarah. It still will never equal the lack of knowledge that Barry has and the fact that he spent 20 years in a church filled with racism beliefs. I am not going to lie but the Muslim Faith is something to be very careful and to keep your eye on. I am afraid of that religion it is like a cult. Instead of drinking kool-aide they kill their own if they want to become christian and they want to get rid of anyone who doesn't believe like they do. So if you know someone who is a "good" Muslim keep your guard up. But hey i am just throwing out a little bit of info for you to ponder you do not have to like what i say and i don't care if you do like what i say.

I too am a born-again Pentecostal -- and I can say that the author of this article and everyone else has come too late into my life to say what I have is not real. I speak in tongues and I apologize to no one about that -- you cannot tell me what I have is not real, until you have experienced a TRUE relationship with the ONE AND ONLY TRUE GOD, WHOSE NAME IS JESUS! You sceptics laugh, you only reaffirm my belief in the Bible, because it says you would scoff. Any one can read prophecies of the Bible and can see that everything written there is true! One thing you can count on -- the Bible says "every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is LORD"!

In response to the comment posted by paproudmom, I'd like to point out that some people believe that the taking of human life, for any reason, is wrong. In that case, it WOULD be hypocritical to believe that the government has the right to order the death of anyone, regardless of whether they have been convicted of a crime. I should also point out that our justice system is flawed, and many of the inmates on death row may in fact be innocent. Christians should note that "Thou shalt not kill" does not specify which forms of killing are acceptable and which are not. It merely states that killing is wrong. The Bible also instructs us to leave judgment to God. Any sensible person would infer from this that we should not engage in any activity that takes a life, whether it is abortion, the death penalty, or war.

    • Posted By: baybay @ 10/29/2008 9:39:13 AM

Sorry, bud. The Bible says THOU SHALT NOT MURDER. It does NOT say thou shalt not kill.
Maybe try reading God's word. That usually helps a little.

      • Posted By: Keegan9 @ 10/29/2008 10:39:26 AM

Actually, it depends on which translation of the Bible you have. My copy of the King James says "thou shalt not kill." Other translations say "thou shalt not murder." Yet another example of why we cannot afford to use scripture to determine legislation and public policy. If there are so many different translations of the same scripture with such widely-varying interpretations, it isn't fair to use just one translation to set policy.

But back to your original objection to my comment: If you substitute the word murder, my comment is still valid. If abortion is the murder of an unborn child, then the death penalty is nothing more than the government sanctioned (and government funded) murder of a person convicted of a crime. If it is wrong to murder someone in the first place, how is it okay to murder a murderer? If someone murdered my brother and I went looking for them and murdered them to get even, it would still be murder and I could be convicted in a court of law. In the case of the death penalty, just because the government does it and our tax dollars foot the bill doesn't make it right.

There is a huge difference between killing an innocent person and killing a guilty person. There is also a huge difference between the state and an individual killing. Read St. Thomas Aquinas' Treatise on Law, part of his Summa Theologica. As for your argument about different translations, that is why Christ founded a Church, to be the authentic interpreter of both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.

I'm alot less concerned that Sarah Palin believes in witchcraft than I am that she believes in a God-driven end-of-days. Believing in ghosts, witchcraft, anmd other things we cannot see is not nearly as strange nor dangerous as believing that she's a servant of some God that will destroy the earth. Witchcraft and magic are a lot less of a stretch of the imagination than an all-powerful God that will come destroy the earth. I mean if everything they say in the bible is true, don't you think God's going to go to the other 10,000 planets that didn't murder his son? And the Old Testament has some really whack stuff in it. You really want to believe a God would do those kinds of things? And if so, you really want him to be your hero? Besides, worshiping God implies he wants to be worshipped, which would make him vain. So you've got a vain all-powerful being who's son we murdered.... great - no wonder they believe in end-of-days... and we're going to give this girl the key to nuclear weapons.... how whack is that?

This is the scariest information I have heard of Palin so far. Does she really believe that the earth was created 6 thousand years ago? Does she believe in dinosaurs? I surely hope she does. Is she going to become the modern American Inquisition (Opposed to the Spanish Inquisition) on earth to destroy and torture loving spritual movements such as Paganism, which by the way predates all monotheistic religions on earth. Does she honestly believe in the fairy tale witches such as the one that gave the apple to sleeping beauty so that she sleep until her true love gave her a kiss. Would she kill and torture innocents such as the poor individuals in Salem, MA. for heresy and Witchcraft. Which in this modern age the truth of this hysteria has been uncovered. Is she living in a world full of fantasy and horrific dreams made up by religious zealots? It makes me wonder if in the 21 century in this wonderful World that we all share, the powers that may become a reality revert America the Great to the Dark Age due to a lack of historical knowledge and the lies for power founded by past conquistadors based on deception and bigotry that this poor woman has been exposed to herself will dominate American minds. Is that what you really want as an American? Really ask yourself this question over and over again. Is that who you want in power?

McCain supporters, before you vote please run this scenario through your head: McCain has already had a life threatening type of cancer, he is 72 yrs old (avg male American lives to 75), there is a very good chance he will pass away before his term is up.......Do you want this country run by SARAH PALIN?? Because when you put your vote down for McCain, you are voting for President Palin as well. Sorry but 18 months as Govenor, 6 yrs as mayor (of a town as big as a rock) and a degree in Journalism just doesn't make me feel confident. Decide wisely.

    • Posted By: SweetT @ 10/29/2008 10:55:26 AM

Run this through your head - A liberal majority in the Supreme Court, legislating from the bench like never before - First ammendment rights tampered with to allow for severe penalties for their definition of hate speech - which will be all the moral and spritual things that conservatives preach on Sunday. How will it come about? One Supreme court ruling for gay rights in the public arena, perhaps a job that was not given to a homosexual by a Christian minstry - They object, it reaches the Supreme Court, they uphold the gays have a right to teach a Sunday school class to married people or worse, to the little one, and next thing you know, you won't be able to speak freely how you feel about such immoral lifestyles abhored by our God, without suffering legal penalties, as upheld by the Supreme Court that you helped establish because you voted for an extreme left wing liberal who appointed the new justices.

As for McCain dying in office - not likely - genetically he is predispositioned to live at least as long as his mother, and she is in her late 80s

      • Posted By: Palin who? @ 10/29/2008 12:24:40 PM

Mr.Mrs/Conservative: you've told us one thing you don't like homosexuals....it's ok, most people voting for McCain don't either so you're not alone....have you seen that huge mark on McCain's forehead!! MELENOMA!!! It's extraordinarily deadly.....I don't believe his mother had any health concerns that were as serious as this. Take your biggoted nonsense to O'Reiley or Coulter...they'll listen to you.

Might I add, for a person with a degree in Journalism she uses extremely poor english. The winking and flirting she does reminds me of a HOOCY MAMA. I can't imagine she would be of any value as an embassador for our country. She is an embarassment.

I'm voting for Obama next week. However, I consider this article to be yet another form of fear-mongering,similar to the type the Obama campaign experienced when it was rumored that he was a Musilm and a radical. This fear-mongering diatribe just panders to liberals this time...when people hear terms and theology they're unfamiliar with, they tend to get frightened, especially if there is a reference to God, blood, etc. Religion, by it's very nature, doesn't make rational sense...the only unusual thing about her religion is that it's ideas are not mainstream and many people are therefore unfamiliar with them. If it were Catholicism, it would be just as irrational; Catholics believe in transubstantiation, i.e. drinking Christ's blood. We're not condemning them as radical because they're mainstream. Basically, what I've learned from this article is that mainstream religion is okay, but any beliefs that fall outside of the usual dogma of Presbyterian, Baptist, Catholic and Jewish are unfit for public office...that goes for Muslims too. Why are we so narrow minded when it comes to religion?

The fact of the matter is, John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. His first "presidential" decision and it was probably the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Barack Obama graduated top of his class from Harvard and is about 1000 times smarter than McCain and Palin put together (mostly because Sarah Palin doesn't add ANY intelligence to the equation). McCain is mini-Bush and Obama is JFK reincarnated as a black man. He'll be an excellent president assuming the bigots of America can get over the fact that a black man is smarter than most of them (and smarter than me too - not afraid to admit that).

Perfectly said! Let's not forget what Joe Biden said either about the markets crashing 79 years ago. He said something that a President will talk to the people. Just like FDR did on TV 79 years ago. Hello I believe Biden can remember when the Television came out and FDR was not President back in 1929. Joe you look better without a foot shoved in your mouth. Maybe Joe should just sit idle and not say anyting at all.

talkback, well said. We as Americans come from very different backgrounds, and we must understand that our beliefs are shaped from those backgrounds. As an African-American from the South, I very well understand what Rev. Wright meant when he made his infamous comments to an African-American congregation. I do not share his beliefs in total but there are large portions of white American that fit his discriptions. How large that number is well be determined for all the World to see on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. The only reason that this election is even close is because Barack Obama is black. You have a man with 2 Ivy League degrees, one wife, no history of adultery as far as we know, President of the Harvard Law Review vs a man who got in the Naval Academy because his father and grandfather were Admirals, finished in the bottom 1% of his class, an adulterer and is divorce. Please do not tell me about family values and striving for excellence. If Obama was a white man with the same credentials this would be a landslide. We all know this if we look at the entire situation objectively. How can a Republican Senator who has been in Washington DC for 26 years be a change agent? That concept is total insane. How can a Republican win the White House after the mess that George Bush has created? Come on America lest us be honest with ourselves. God Bless America!!!

    • Posted By: averageguy40 @ 10/29/2008 12:22:21 PM

Please don't equate my belief in smaller government, in personal accountability, in a free market system where people are rewarded for hard work not just given handouts, in the sanctity of human life, and in true service to your country not just rhetoric, as racism. Barack's race has absolutely nothing to do with my decision to support John McCain and the worst tragedy that could come out of this election is if we use it to further racial division in this country. I am not naive and realize that racism is still a reality in America today, but blanket generalizations like the one you just put forth only serve to further the problem.

People in case you have not noticed Jesus was a revolutionary, he was a communist, he rallied against the establisment who in his eyes exploited his people. It's funny to see how Republicans love money so much and exploit people so much (big corporations), and here they are calling themselves christians, and not only that to say that they are the only ones with clear reason. This just goes to show you how religion can be used to control not liberate people. You have got to learn how to think for yourself not as the established government commands you to. Jesus said that the last ones (the poor...) will be the first in the kingdom of heaven. Everything has to be in moderation.

You;ve got to be kidding. So newsweek, where's the story on Reverand Wright and how Obama while being a member of the church, married, children baptized by Rev Wright never ever heard the anti-american statements made. The hate that spilled over in that church is unforgiveable. Shame on the media for the cover up, its unfortunate that the lost Obama years haven't been addressed for the american people. We should be insisting on the answers of Obamas past associations and the millions in donations he has received. Where has the money come from? Why hasn't it been made public? And now tonight he will be spending millions for an info commericial during these troubling financial times. No wonder he lied about taking public campaign financiing. I truly hope folks will see this all for what it truly is-the american people have literally been pushed into backing someone whose past was never addressed.

I am not that convinced about anyone showing up in a religious service and instantly being awarded divine gifts and powers among the membership, and casting all others as non believers. Something about thou shalt not judge and also love thy neighbor, which does not ring true by their ignoring mankind and placing themselves on some sort of salvation at death and in the meantime, enjoying all material comforts greedily.
Placing God outside of themselves just does not sit right with placing God first, knowing God is within us all...

    Part 1 of 3
I think it is paramount that we do our best to understand issues before we take a side. Please consider my thoughts with an open mind. The question here is "are Sarah Palin's views on Christianity and government an element to consider in the coming election. A broader question remains on the separation of church and state. To research, I looked up "scientific method", "faith" and "superstition"(thanks wikipedia). I offer the following:
    ((From Wikipedia,
Scientific method refers to bodies of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.

Although procedures vary from one field of inquiry to another, identifiable features distinguish scientific inquiry from other methodologies of knowledge. Scientific researchers propose hypotheses as explanations of phenomena, and design experimental studies to test these hypotheses. These steps must be repeatable in order to dependably predict any future results. Theories that encompass wider domains of inquiry may bind many hypotheses together in a coherent structure. This in turn may help form new hypotheses or place groups of hypotheses into context.

Among other facets shared by the various fields of inquiry is the conviction that the process be objective to reduce a biased interpretation of the results. Another basic expectation is to document, archive and share all data and methodology so they are available for careful scrutiny by other scientists, thereby allowing other researchers the opportunity to verify results by attempting to reproduce them. This practice, called full disclosure, also allows statistical measures of the reliability of these data to be established.

WhoDatsay, must be a Confederate. That local government crap is ignorant. That is what the Civil War was about. If you live in a Country you must abide by the laws of the Country. The cities can not make laws that are contrary to state laws and the states can not make lwas that are contrary to federal laws. You make a good point about having more local authority but is must be in the larger context of federal law. The Federal Government should not be running local schools, paving local roads, or running the local fire and police departments. Those are the roles of the local and state governments. But to say ok my city well allow gay marriage and the city next door will not is not appropriate. My city will allow slavery and the city next doot does not. This is definitely backwards unenlightened thinking.
