hmmm, I read once about a man that believed in demons and exorcisms and a crazy end time scenario, oh yeah, his name was JESUS! I guess the writers of this article would consider him a right-wing nut. Newsweek has went way too far this time. Although I will continue to pray for our leaders, I will especially pray for those who wrote this article. You are in need of GOD in your lives.

Obama is not a religious extremist. If he were, I'm sure there'd be articles all over the place about it. Anyway, he's neither a Muslim, nor is he a Jew. What's your point?

      • Posted By: iloveamerica1 @ 10/29/2008 12:14:38 PM

Yap, Obama is not a religious extremist..but he just wants to listen to J.Wright, the GD America speaker for 20 years.Palin, a religious extremist? Nope, she is just practising her faith as with all christians. You probably does not have religion in your life. This country was founded in "In God we Trust"...What happen?

      • Posted By: SweetT @ 10/29/2008 10:43:04 AM

Yes, just as you are born into the Jewish faith, you are born into the Muslim faith. Therefore, since his father was a Muslim, Barack Obama is a Muslim - he may have you believing that he has alientated himself from his Muslim faith, but it is hard to determine for certain. You see in an interview, you can find on U-tube, he answered a question about whether John McCain had questioned his faith by saying that - NOT THAT I CAN REMEMBER, I DON'T THINK JOHN HAS EVER QUESTIONED MY MUSLIM FAITH - it is said in the scriptures that out of the abundance of a man's heart, his mouth speaks. Why did he respond - MY MUSLIM FAITH, rather than my faith or my Christian faith? Regardless, he has Muslim blood running through his veins, and he should not be questioned about it, but he should not deny it either.

Just as McCain called all of Western PA "racists". It's a gaffe, and they are increasingly common in our age of constant media coverage, aren't they?

          • Posted By: SweetT @ 10/29/2008 11:33:01 AM

Sorry, think it more than a simple gaff when you substitute two entirely different words - Muslim for Christian. Then, for the first time perhaps in the history of Barry - the entire rest of the interview he is extremely nervous and unable to focus his thoughts clearly. Probably because the ramifications of what he just stated are running through his mind, more than the lies he has rehearsed for years. He stammers and almost stutters... but nearly half a billion dollars in ads and the media graciously glazes over the whole thing.

Anytime you hear people talking about God speaking to them and knowing God's plan and God's will you should be worried! Sounds eerily similar to Bin Laden! How many times throughout history have people been murdered and tortured by someone knowing God's plan or will! This is exactly why the founding fathers of this country insisted on seperation of church and state. They had experienced the persecution and injustice of a religion influenced government. People can believe what they want. Keep it between you and God!

Where is the balance? It figures that with polls tightening in the race to see if Obama really can buy the election with Oprah's money, that media would stop at nothing to cast doubts of any kind on the only ticket that purely represents honesty and dignity and a demonstrated commitment to serve ALL the people of the United States.

From the moment McCain and Palin began serving in any public office or service be it military or legislative, they have put aside greed and pride, to put their fellow Americans first. Their examples of leadership from beginning to present, are solid on all fronts, not waivering or suspect like the past 8 years of Mr. Obama.

I cringe after listening to just one of Jeremiah Wrights sermons, how could he listen to 20 years of them? I cringe after listening to the September 6, 2001 Chicago Public Radio Odyssey program in its entirety, hearing Mr. O dismiss the perpetual significance of our forefathers U.S. Constitution, and how he regrets that the Supreme Court did nothing to repay America's financial debt to liberated slaves. The O in Obama should stand for Objectionable agenda, objectionable associations with radical terrorists and Marxist professors, objectionable campaign practices, and objectionable pride in self rather than in country and its people!

I know that the honorable Senator McCain vowed not to allow Obama's religious views or even his association of 20 years in a radical hate filled ministry, to be basis for any campaign strategy. And I know that John McCain is a man of his word. However - when withholding this information and truths serves to endanger the lives and moral fiber and the preservation of our United States Constitution, then that pledge needs to be overridden and the trumpets sounded! McCain, please embrace the entire nation's Godly people of every color and race, and warn them what will happen in our Supreme Court and to our great freedoms through the Constitution if the Objectionable Mr. O is elected.

The McCain ticket represents honesty & dignity? Are we talking about the same John McCain that had an affair while married to his first wife & left the woman who stood by & waited for him while he was a prisoner of war? And why did he no longer find it necessary to honor his marriage vows? Because his first wife, a former model, was in a car accident that caused injuries leading to her gaining weight & walking with a cane. Obviously she was no longer worthy of being married to a man as great the POW, John McCain. That's what you consider honesty & dignity?

Why are we debating Sarah Palin's religion against Obama? Shouldn't it be McCain vs. Obama? Or at the very least Palin against Biden???
What does Biden do on Sunday mornings? Do we have any of that on UTube?? Or Obama, or McCain?
This country was founded based on religion, and as we can see at the present time the religon of our Presidents, makes no difference in the condition of our country. Was Clinton a Christian the same as Bush? Or was he Mulism? Would any of it had made a bit of difference? If Palin believes in radical Christian beliefs, what difference will that make in the White House, especially since she will only be Vice President?
How do we know having a Non-Christian President will make things better? We don't.
What we need to focus on are the plans, and ideas the nominees have about our country. How can we elect someone who does not salute our country's flag? If Palin failed to face our flag for the anthem, what would we say about her? Christian America Hater??? Yes...So why can't we say Muslim America Hater to Obama??? Because it politically incorrect! The very politics put into place by Christians when our government and constitution was formed!! Anyone can claim a religion...we'll never know what effect their religion will have on us until they are elected, and then they could all change to atheism and we wouldn't be able to change a thing. We should all focus on the issues, instead of Sunday mornings...It's they way people live that make a difference not where they show up for 2-3 hours once a week.

Religion is the opium of the world. I don't understand how we Americans can talk about middle eastern countries and say that it is wrong for them to govern by the word of the Koran and here we are saying that it is fine for a President to establish a religious (Christian) form of government that follows the bible word by word. I find that hypocritical. I find that the mentality of extremist Christians to believe that they are the only ones that are right and just is just tiranical.

    • Posted By: averageguy40 @ 10/29/2008 12:12:43 PM

Get real. We have more religious freedom in American than in any country in the world. To suggest that because Bush is a Christian that we have some sort of religious government is ludicrous. The difference is that in many of those countries that declare Islam as the national religion, if you choose to worship differently, they cut off your head. I've heard of apples to oranges comparisons before, but yours is more like apples to elephants. Be thankful you live in a government that allows you to worship anything or nothing as you choose, and to speak freely about any of them.

I also served this country and Michelle's comment's when taken in context is not a slap in my face. I have seen the good and the bad in this country and I choose to ignore neither. I remember the Black GI that threw his body on a grenade in Nam to save his White comrades and I remember the fact that his body was refused burial in the local Cemtary because he was Black. Are you proud of that?

    • Posted By: talkback @ 10/29/2008 12:12:24 PM

No one should be proud of segregationism or racism in this country. But while we are talking about it, let's talk about the Mexican immigrant soldiers who serve and die for our country who are granted citizenzip "posthumously" Are we proud of that? These men and women didn't ask for their immigrant parent to bring them here or birth them here. They just grew up here. This isn't happening 30 years ago, this is happening today. Mexicans in this country are still slaves today, but you won't ever hear me saying I'm "finally" proud to be American.

The trust of the matter is that for some UNGODLY reason, the MEDIA tends to believe that most of the simple people in the United States of America has little knowledge of how this all works. Well, we are smarter than you may think and we are certainly smarter than you the Media as we know that there IS NO WAY IN HEAVEN THAT OBAMA HAS THE EXPERIENCE THAT JOHN MCCAIN HAS. YOU CAN PREACH UNTIL YOU DIE!!! HE CAN'T TOUCH HIM....AND SPEAK OF THE DEVIL...I THINK HE IS WORKING HIS WAY THROUGH THE MEDIA AS WE SPEAK!!!! YOU ARE BLINDED AND YOU WILL REAP THE RESULTS OF OBAMA JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD. JUST WAIT AND SEE!!!!

There have been numerous surveys of presidential greatness. Many are in Wikipedia.com under ???Historical rankings of U.S. presidents.???

David Levine analyzed this data. Consolidating 12 surveys, Lincoln ranked first; Franklin Roosevelt, second; George Washington, third; Thomas Jefferson, fourth; Theodore Roosevelt, fifth; and Woodrow Wilson, sixth.

The study also looked at experience. A wide variety of experiences were included, ranging from being a state senator or governor up to vice president. Equal weight was given for each year of experience, regardless of type.

Buchanan, our most experienced president, was almost dead-bottom in the greatness rank.

Contrast that with our greatest presidents. Lincoln, who ranked number one, was the 17th least-experienced president. Twenty-five other presidents had more experience than he did. Franklin Roosevelt, second greatest, had the sixth least experience and led us through the Depression and World War II. Theodore Roosevelt and Wilson, the fifth and sixth greatest presidents, were also at the bottom of the experience heap.

Experience and greatness are two different concepts that don???t have a bearing on one another.

George Will, conservative columnist, recently said, ???Under the pressure of the financial crisis, one presidential candidate is behaving like a flustered rookie playing in a league too high. It is not Barack Obama.???

      --------------------------------

And, BTW, mcsame's experience of being tested in a "war" was when he was sitting on the flight deck and never took off. Get back on the short bus and take some remedial history lessons!

The Book of Revelations has been around for 2,000 years. During these 2000 years, the end of the world has been predicted based on Revelations at least 10,000 times. Every single believer who ever said that believed it to be true with all their heart. However, it never was true.

I read the Bible frequently, and I find Revelations fascinating. But the popular notion of it is no more than a mental technicolor video game that people play in their heads. Good exercise for the imagination, but not very pertinent to the meaning of the text.

Possibly (just possibly, because all interpretations of the Bible are just interpretations), Revelations is a metaphor for how each individual should "clean house" in their soul and purify themselves enough so that they can see God's presence here on earth. The "end of the world" might just be a metaphor for the end of the worldly ego.

Anybody who uses Revelations to cast aspersions on people who have different religious beliefs is clearly not hearing the teachings of Jesus.

    • Posted By: Sepulchre @ 10/29/2008 12:08:55 PM

Isn't it odd how many people profess to being Chiristian seem to have not read the New Testament or if they did they just thumbed threw it because it is painfully obvious they didn't absorb any of the Jesus' teachings. They need to ask themselves if Jesus were here now would he be proud of them for hating all the right people, or would he just be ashamed?

To Bren4America. I challege you to find anywhere in the constitution anywhere where it states the words seperation of church and state. I also challenge you to review all legal cases dealing with church and state and also the history of the times when the constitution was written. There was absolutely no implication of seperation of church and state there. The intent was that no one religion would become the religion or church of the United States. Our forfathers mostly were from England where there was the Curch of England as the national church and our forfathers wanted to avoid that. They clearly did not intend to take God out of the country. All cases after that until 1947 were based on precedent and was held up by the supreme Court. In 1947 the first case that went in what is now the direction of our country occurred. That was when the supreme court began to opininate law rather than rule on law. You may agree with what is done now and I do not but I challenge to find one statement by our founding forefathers that speaks of speration of church and state the way you believe today. I am also convinced that the moral values of our country are in direct correlation with the removal of prayer from our schools. I support anyone who takes a stand for Christ and proud of Mrs Palin for doing so even though I do not believe in the penticostal doctrine. Sorry you feel differently. The ultimate finality is if what Christians believe is correct about the end times and God's judgement and grace is correct and you are wrong then your eternity is one that will not be too good. However, if those who believe that Christianity is a hoax are correct then all I have lost believing in Christ is some wasted time. Believe or not believe is our choice and in the US we have that right but speration of church and state has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you......I was waiting for a post like this. And in another post, someone said that they would "rather believe in God only to die and find nothing there than to not believe only to die and find it's true." Not word for word, but close enough. This is what I want to say to everyone who laughs at a belief in God. I, however, have a relationship with Him. He alone sustains me through these troubled times.

  • Posted By: Muchuu @ 10/29/2008 11:23:21 AM

Oh please, the whole reason we're hearing about Palin's beliefs and not Obamas is because she's a hot topic. We've already learned about Obama's beliefs because he's been in the spotlight longer and nobody cares to cover the issue anymore. People are bored. Sarah Palin, however, is still new and exciting for some reason and people want to know all about her.

I've always been taught in my theology classes that Latter Day Saints ARE Christians. They believe in Christ, the holy Trinity, and the Bible. That denotes Christianity (though I'm sure many believers would disagree).

    • Posted By: lampfull @ 10/29/2008 12:08:13 PM

I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
He perfectly predicted the current meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen next
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything seen in generations
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand how its been broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use quantum mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He was the last to know somthing was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. Check out this link to the truth http://my.barackobama.com/keatingvideo
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a budget surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that
Stand up and hold them accountable
Bush isn't on the ballot this year but his policies are
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

I think that this is a very misguided article. Though I do not support Sarah Palin the author's viewpoints on the pentecostal faith is not only wrong but factuly incorrect. There are a lot of things stated in this article that are not true and quotes taht are used to sway an opinion against people's religious beliefs. If you choose to write an article that attacks Palin then you need to write an article that attacks her standpoints in this election not a religion that she now denounces. Many faiths believe in the end of times not just one I really do not understand your motives behind this article but if it was to shine a bad light on Palin you actually shined a bad light on your self.

  • Posted By: enuffznuff98 @ 10/29/2008 11:43:34 AM

At least Obama doesn't need protection from "witchcraft"!!!

Conservatives will HATE this article, librals will simple read and think about it. none of this proves anything about her as a person. her ACTIONS prove what kind of person she is. and YES, she has ben scrutinized more than any other politial figure in such a short time, BUT she's running for the SECOND HIGHEST office in the country and people knew NOTHING about her. PLUS, she had some things in her closet that look like McCain didn't bother checking out. if you say that's not true, then you are BLIND. People running for our nation's highest offices need to have SQUEEKY-CLEAN records and nothing to hide. Republicans 10-20 years ago would NEVER have voted for the McCain-Palin ticket, with all the things they've done wrong.

again, if you think that's wrong, there's no use talking to you in the first place.

She seems to be a born again Christian. But that is not for us to decide. Only God knows what is in her heart. We can watch her and see if she emits the fruits of the Spirit.
The thing that bothers me right now is her choice to accept the very expensive clothing for her run at the office. She looked great in a $100.00 suit. She emulates the down home type girl and promotes her "Joe the Plummer" schick. Does she really think that "Joe the Plummer" and his wife can afford to wear the cloths she is showing up in now? How hypocritical!!! I love Sarah Palin and I believe that she has brought a lot of good to the McCain ticket, and she seemed to be different and more for the common person, but.....she is proving herself to be "just a politican". How sad.

Y'had me there. Great perspective and accurate analysis of the rhetoric and argument going on here. Then you closed with ...
"All I know is mcCain served his COUNTRY and hasn't spent all his time serving his community his calling is definitly higher see you at the polls."
And I am moved to ask you how McCain's military service makes him any more fit to be president than Obama's service here in America? George Bush may be a bad example but he did not go to war either and his shadow of military service in the National Guard where he was, more often than not, a no show. He spent more time ducking duty than serving.
Military service is hardly a standard for suitability to serve as president. It takes more than being able to point and shoot. (Yes, the camera analogy minimalizes the combat but it makes the point.) I hardly think people would prefer a president who has a stellar military record but little common sense or ability to legislate, mandate, or govern.
