Even committed Republicans who support McCain are asking themselves if they really would take the risk of putting our country into Sarah Palin's hands. Many prominent Republicans, including Colin Powell, have said that Palin is not prepared to be Vice President. Being VP requires a depth of knowledge on national and international issues. Palin is ignorant of these matters. Being President requires great intelligence and a clear-eyed world view, one untainted by religious fanaticism. Look at the mess we got with the under-qualified Dubya, and even he seems smarter and less fanatical than Palin. McCain is 72 years old, with high cholesterol and high blood pressure; his father and grandfather each died of heart attacks at age 72. McCain's Vice President HAS to be ready to lead. And by lead, I am not referring to a full speed charge into Armageddon.

For those of you who don't know, Palin belongs to a fundamentalist church that believes the end of the world is near: that war, financial distress and famine will kill off the sinful non-believers, and that when this holocaust occurs all good Christians will be taking refuge in Alaska. Furthermore, her church conducts witch hunts -- they actually use prayer to locate "witches" in their community, then publicly brand them as witches, and hold them responsible for everything that goes wrong in town. (Honestly, I think the long winters must be getting to their minds.) You can go on YouTube and watch videos of Palin participating during sermons like this. She stands on the altar facing the members. The congregation stands with outstretched hands, trancelike, speaking in tounges while the priest prays to "keep Sarah safe from all forms of witchcraft."

Could you REALLY feel comfortable knowing that a woman who holds these beliefs would have the power to declare war and deploy nuclear missiles?

In response to "RevMarc" - as a pastor, you should probably do a little more research before claiming that Sarah Palin was in the Alaskan Independent Party. Not only has she strongly denied that, the campaign produced her voter registration records going back to 1982 showing that she has consistently registered as a Republican. It is true that she attended the AIP's convention when she was Mayor of Wasilla and addressed the convention while she was governor, but these appearances were all part of her public relations duties for the particular positions she held. And in both speeches she merely mentioned that many political parties were good for the political process but never claimed affiliation or membership and referred to the AIP as "your party." Let's get our facts straight!

    • Posted By: RevMarc @ 10/29/2008 11:44:53 AM

Please re-read my post. I did not say that she was a member, only that she was involved with them, Todd was indeed a member, and there are members of AIP who claim that Sarah was a member as well, before she became Mayor of Wasilla. As governor she did welcome their convention, giving official "approval" to an extremist, Anti-American organization. Didn't she say that the chief executive should not lend credence to radical leaders by giving the appearance of offical approval (e.g. Obama criticized for agreeing to meet with our enemies)?
To his credit, Sen. Obama has not raised the issue of AIP, but if his associations are to be scrutinized, it is fair to take a close look are hers as well.

It will be interesting to see how the Obama supporters react when they realize they' ve elected their worst nightmare in the name of change. Then it will be to late. FYI: Check out the economic stats before and after the 2006 elections when the Democrats gained majority control of Congress.

I am much more concerned about Mr Obama's belief's from 20 yr of Rev Wright. Perhaps you could provide similar article of his religious beliefs. I think the public would be interested.

  • Posted By: shatley1 @ 10/29/2008 11:44:16 AM

Why doesn't the media ask the question "What are Barack Obama's Religious Beliefs?" Seems like there are a lot more questionable beliefs/connections/relationships in his background? Sure getting tired of the media bias reporting.

If you are a Christian you would be aware that evil in the world takes many forms. There is a well known passage in the Bible where Jesus casts demons from a man into a group of swine that stampede over a cliff into the sea. This is not outrageous to have someone say a blessing over you. Remember this man is stating a blessing from the perspective of where he comes from, Kenya, where many people still believe in witches, demons, evil spirits and voodoo. That does not mean that Sarah Palin specifically requested protection from witches. The timing of this article is what I find interesting. One week prior to the election. Trying to cast a little evil into the path of the McCain/Palin ticket. Me thinks so. What Gov Palin should have requested was protection from the press from the heavens. That is what she really needs. I am a Catholic and my church still believes in exorcisms. It is a ritual of the church not commonly practiced. I did not see that as part of the discussion in the '04 campaign when John Kerry was running. What the real outrage is Obama sitting in a church listening to hate filled sermons and not getting up to leave. Of course you choose not to go there. Wonder why? Could it be bias. Unfortunately for you that opens the issue back up for discussion but of course that is bigotry to discuss Reverend Wright and Obama's relationship to him now isn't it.

  • Posted By: jrpackard @ 10/29/2008 10:43:24 AM

If any of you complaining about Barak Obama's religous belief took some of the gumption you use to spout crap about him and read and ask questions you would know that he is a Christian man with a firm belief in God and that Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. That is the kind of man I want leading our country. You haven't seen any of this in the news about Sen. Obama because it is NOT an issue. He denounced Rev. Wright when he should have. He can still care about the man but not believe or abide by his words, which I believe would be the Christian way. You right wingers that want to taunt and abuse his name but do not want to take time to find out what he believes should be ashamed of yourselves.

    • Posted By: Bren4America @ 10/29/2008 11:43:56 AM

So true, all they have to do is read about Obama's beliefs. Maybe reading is too much to ask of republicans? That's right, if they read it might force them to read about McCain. They might find out that McCain possibly killed someone while in a drunken stooper back in 1964 while in the Navy. That's right, it's ok with republicans if you kill someone after they are born, just not before.

    • Posted By: Katecr @ 10/29/2008 11:11:08 AM

He should have denounced him years ago when he first heard this hatred not when he became a political liability. He had his children baptized by this man and brought them to his sermons. What is he teaching his children??

i agree with the poster below. where is the story about obama and his anti-american racist pastor he was involved with for over 20 years until of course people find out about it and all of a sudden obama denounces him. at least sarah palin standds by her church and her faith even when people "rebuke" her for it. its really sad that the media and the people who listen to it and take what they say seriously are more concerned with sarah palin and her religion which does no harm to anyone but teaches on treating people with kindness and compassion rather than focusing in on obama and how he wants to kill babies or should i say let babies die whose abortions didnt work. or how they want to completely ignore the fact that he has been involved with on more than one occassion and more than one person who hates america. if the media cant be nonbiased and tell both stories people need to start doing the research for themselves. theres so much more than just what the anti-mccain and obama loving media has to say.

It is so troubling to hear a lot of these comments. People need to understand that most people have no idea what Christianity really is. It is hard for me to sit here and judge Palin when I have no idea what she really believes. We all know how the media blows things up and tries to make drama.
One thing I want to clear up is what Christianity is at the core. I have already seen a whole bunch of comments that are completely wrong. Biblical Christianity teaches that all have sinned and fall short of God's perfect standard. Therefore, all deserve judgement. It doesn't matter who you compare yourself to, you have fallen short because the comparison is not with your peers but with God. God being just must judge us and will. HOWEVER, the great news is that God also LOVES us more than anyone can understand. He has provided a way out from his judgement in the death of Jesus Christ. Believing in Christ and asking him through prayer into your life is what makes a Christian a Christian. It is a personal decision to receive Him. By doing so, Christ's death pays for your own sins past, present, and future. That is the amazing thing. God has provided a way out and has taken the penalty upon himself. That is the other thing people do not understand. The bible is very clear about who Jesus is. He was a man, but he is also God. That is why is one death could pay for the sin of all because only God is infinite. Only God is perfect. While he was on earth, He was tempted just as we are. He is the only one who can say he lived a perfect life. That is why Christ can pay for the sin of all.
Once you accept Christ and ask for a relationship with Him, that is when the Holy Spirit indwells you. It is NOT about going to church every Sunday. None of that matters unless you have accepted Christ. Church is good because it offers us an opportunity to worship God, give thanks to God, and have fellowship. However, attending church and just believing in Christ is NOT enough. You must personally ask Him into your life and ask for His death to pay for your sin. It isn't easy because we are all prideful. We like to look at ourselves as being good, especially compared to a lot of others. But the Bible says this isn't true. Humanity has fallen from the way God created us and everything has spiraled out of control since. Jesus Christ is the only solution to man's problems. The bible is clear about this: there is only one way to God and that is through Jesus.

you people try to attack people over anything and attempt to make a matter out of something that isn't. he's praying for her.....he's asking Jesus to protect her from all evil. he's doing something all of us should be doing, which is praying for our leaders......that God will grant them wisdom and understanding and that they may lead this country in a manor that would bring glory to his name. if God is cut out of this country, it will surely fall. the only reason we are free is because we ARE one nation under God......we NEED God to heal out land. Read 2 Chronicles 7:14 -and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

I love how rightwing Republicans, Evangelicals, Xenophobes, racists, and pro conservatives slam Newsweek for publishing a journal about Sarah Palin. "DON'T SLAM HER, SHES A ROCK STAR!" People, grow up please, clinging religion fanatism and false ideologies doesn't make a country strong. And if you still think like that, well, your not helping America.

    • Posted By: Terri65807 @ 10/29/2008 11:16:23 AM

      Martinus,
Apparently you are a left wing extremist. The Bible is the word of God and I believe it with all my heart. I am proud to be a faith believing Christian and I am also proud that McCain had the backbone to bring Gov Palin onto his ticket! Instead of criticising her and her beliefs, why don't you examine your own heart and ask God to come into your heart as your personal Savior. That is the only way you will be able to have the blinders taken off your eyes. You shoudl be lead by God not your pocketbook or the rantings of reporters like the one who wrote this article. I challenge you to go to a Evangelical church and hear God's truth!! It certainly couldn't hurt you. God is love and peace!!

      • Posted By: Martinus @ 10/29/2008 11:43:24 AM

Haha, are you kidding me? You sound like an AQ terrorist already. Tell me, does it hurt to say that you are a Christain Terrorist who uses religion to make people afraid of the world? That is what a terrorist is, to incite "terror" with religion. Born again Christains like yourself do this all the time. I know your rapture well, and I forbid killing jews for your false prohecy. You can thank John Hagee for telling me that.

I believe in god allright, but not the blood thirsty, self-righteous monster that you people project. The only Evangelical I see that deserves presidency is Mike Huckabee, and thats because he sticks with the true meaning of the bible, and not on the Apacolypse.

Sarah Palin, John Hagaee, and you are a threat to mankind's existance, and deserves to burn in hell for attempting to damn our country!

Read the Constitution and the history of its framers. Look further into history than the tip of your own nose. There is a lot going on here that you obviously don't understand. Don't come down on Palin for her willingness, through her faith, to admit that she hasn't got all the answers, like you seem to have. Such vitriolic responses and name calling label making on your part is nothing more than Democratic voter theory at its best - let's play the race card at every turn, divide the people, capture the votes of the elderly and the young by fear tactics and by labeling everyone else as freaks and weirdos. On top of that, we will overlook the historicity of the Consttitution, view it as flawed, and hope that the average American is too uninformed to know that what we are feeding them is a bunch of crap. Good luck with all of that. Its not working on me.

      • Posted By: Martinus @ 10/29/2008 11:20:17 AM

I'm not a Democrat, I'm a Republican centrist. I learned and fully understand this country's history well enough to understood why our forefathers built this government so that religion cannot have any influence.

I'm sure as hell bet that there are smart Conservatives who think that Sarah Palin is not good for the country because her ideology conflicts with what Traditional Conservatism is all about.
Any American rightwing Christain who puts their deluted religous fantasy and cause problems that will damage our country is basically an anti-American. Sarah Palin has been heading that direction.

Comment: "...We know Sarah Palin is Christian which is what this country was founded on. Wake up people!!!!":]
This country was NOT founded on Christianity. It was founded on a faith in God, yes, but moreso it was founded on the belief that the government should not have the right to dictate to the people how they worshipped what god or gods. Bear in mind that, by the time of the American Revolution, the British had been under Tudor rule, which gave them the Anglican church compliments of Henry VII's raging hormones and inability to produce a male hair. Henry's reign was followed by the Stuarts who enforced the Anglican rule and persecution of those who refused to follow the Anglican church. Then came the House of Hanover which, instead of lessening the restraints on those who refused to become Anglican, simply continued the practice of exclusion and oppression of those who did not.
The people were tired of the oppressive and discriminatory practices of the Anglican church and sought greater freedoms and liberties to choose for themselves. THAT ... religious FREEDOM, not christianity, is the foundation on which the nation was founded.

    • Posted By: wordsmith @ 10/29/2008 11:31:36 AM

Your post suggests that you must blissful, indeed. Your suggestion that Palin is Christian but Obama is not, while first of all being untrue and without validation, is also totally irrelevant to the situation. Bear in mind that, when John Kennedy was campaigning for the presidency, Christian extremists decried him as not being suited to the job because he was Catholic and Christian extremists decried his fitness to be president because he was not a christian! They apparently failed to recognize Catholics were also Christians.
Furthermore, how is it that someone who calls God by some name other than "God" but who believes in the same personal and ethical laws of conduct as any christian, someone who may be of the highest intelligence and fortitude, possessing the greatest compassion, passion, and understanding of human nature and needs, is somehow unsuitable to take over the most important and demanding job in the nation? Once again we see the great American bias coming into play. Christian exttremists or white supremacists or black supremacists, they are no different in their view of one faction's rights above all others to a place in this land. This is the attitude that took Europeans across the continent, slashing, burning, hacking, and destroying anything in their path under the umbrella of Eminent Domain, which basically preached that "We have a right to it simply because we need it and want it and all others be darned!"

Just because you say it's so , doesn't make it so.

    • Posted By: Vivi @ 10/29/2008 8:13:59 AM

You know what? People, like yourself, keep saying "oh, we need to know about Obama's past oh we don't know enough about his religion", Have you researched it? There is plenty of information on exactly the topics you're interested in. There is a lot of BS online, but if you've ever written a research paper, you know how to spot the credible sources.

My problem is that I don't think you do want to have a real understanding of Obama. I think you're more comfortable remaining ignorant.

Obama is a Christian. When he lived abroad as a child, he went to a school that taught about Islamic faith (my private school in "real Virginia" did, too). He did a lot of soul searching in college, like many of us, and he came to accept Christianity.

I am not a Christian. But I don't think either Palin or Obama's religions are relevant, unless they dislike the US being a secular state. I wonder if a Taoist or a Wiccan could ever hold public office without their opponents calling them "devil worshipers" and such nonsense.

The REAL issue here, though, is that what many questions about Obama's religion play to peoples fear of what they don't understand and imply that he is not a Christian. They don't seem to imply that he is Jewish or Buddhist either. The obvious question you're really asking is "isn't he really a Muslim?"

No, hes not. But that isn't the point. The point is that SO WHAT if he, or Palin, or Condeleeza Rice, or Chris Dodd were Muslims? So what then? There is NOTHING wrong with being a Muslim. Some terrorists are Muslims, yes, but what would you call people participating in the crusades or spanish inquisition?
Christians can be and have been terrorists.

Colin Powell explained it best. He watched a mother cry over the grave of her son in Arlington Cemetery. He was 14 on 911 and joined the military as soon as he was old enough. He died in Iraq. And above his name, his DOB and DOD, was not a cross, not a star of david, but a crescent of the Islamic faith.

So all of you who fancy yourselves patriots and whisper that Obama might be a Muslim, need to realize that Muslims have died protecting America and your families. Maybe you'll be a little less of a jackass next time.

And I guess Rev. Wright ran a mainstream church. Instead of wasting your time on this why not question the democratic congress fighting regulations and change for Fannie Mae back in 2004 and 2005. There's plenty to blame for economic crisis but none of you in the media have the guts to question the Democrats role in the Fannie Mae disaster!!! Keep up the great work!!

Mainstream media and Yellow Journalism strikes again!! The pastor was from Kenya....get it? In Kenya people still believe in witches, so this was a natural for him. What was Gov. Palin to do....run away, screaming? Why does Newsweek feel the need to attack and belittle Gov. Palin's religion, yet Obama's is off limits! I betcha Gov. Palin never heard "God d*** America in HER church!" Newsweek is a disgrace.

The liberal media has all but handed the presidency to Obama before we have even had a chance to vote. People will say why should I vote it's not going to make a difference. I'm sick of these polls and electroal votes. Wait until after the election to say who won. I hope and pray that God will serve an upset and McCain/Palin will win. That will teach the biased liberal media to try and project the winner. Only God knows who will win. Let the people vote before you project a winner.

    • Posted By: elithian @ 10/29/2008 11:42:25 AM

In truth that would be an upset. The republicans have destroyed our reputation, ruined our economy, depeleted our military resources and devided our nation. Time and again I hear reference to how "we are the real Americans". Well, I do not think so. Bush is liar nad has allowed corporate America to devastate our economy, our jobs and our way of life. McCain intends to follow those same economic principles which favor those with a glutonous appetite for power, control and "Ungodly" wealth. Well, Mr. McCain is not my friend. He wants me to pay for his high life and put him in the hisotry books as a good guy. Well, he gave that up when he sold out to get nominated. Whenever the media says something unflattering about the Republican we all hear the same Whine; "the liberal media". Well, it is not the liberal media, it is the free press. First amendment rights. How is it you know all these things about Obama you think we all need to Know? The information came from the same liberal media. The problem is Republicans will try to win at any cost. America is tired of that. We want our reputation back. We want our economy strong. We want to take care of each other, we want our jobs and the American dream. The free market has revealed itself to be what it is; a greed machine. Free market is a Republican concept that allows the rich to exploit everyone else. We need a fair market, the same one that made America great. Read the history. Reagan raised taxes, Bush 1 raised taxes. why? Because it was right and necessary. Wake up before it is too late and there is nothing left to protect. The corporate elites are destrying our country as we speak.

I have read quitea few of the posts her and it seems that most agree that: God is real, Jesus is His Son, and that the Bible is God's written LIVING Word!
I agree with that sentiement and so I try to live out my life and act according to the tenets of what I claim to be (A Christian).
Obama also claims to be a Christian. Really? If I claim to be an Illinoisan, wouldn't I have to be from IL or currently live in IL? BO claims to be a Christian yet fails to stand up for the most defenseless beings of all (human babies). If we endoresed doing this to puppies, BO and all the left wingers would be screaming bloody murder!!

If I claim to be a Christian, I would hope my actions, thoughts, words and deeds would align would be aligned with that claim. I am not perfect, I, as well as all of us do, sin every day. But I believe in and serve a loving God who allows me to come before him humbly and ask forgiveness by confessing my sin when I recognize I have committed a sin. However, our LOVING God is also a just God and will judge severely those elected and put in charge of leading nations.
BO and those that elect him will see just how severe and Just our God is because He will not let our nation go unpuished for the atrocities that have been and continue to be allowed/committed by the dem left.
