Obviously the writers of this column are left-non believers, which is ok with me because I believe in freedom of speech as well as Palin???s freedom of religion. What Palin???s choice of religion is no one???s concerned but hers and what I want to believe or not is no one???s but my concern. I rather have a believer in a government position that a non believer, but if that???s the case, as long it does not interfere with the rights of all to exercise religion???fine.

Seems to me that all people are not blind it's just that some just choose ignore what is right in front of them. The media is also a prime example, here they are going after Sarah P. with all these little stories to try and discredit her as much as they can. On the other hand here is Senator Obama who has had multiple associations with alot of questionable people, i.e.Rezko, Wright, Ayers, Meeks, Pfleger, ACORN, and Rashid Khal and the media give a brief statement of it and then it is nicely stuck in a closet. If Senator Obama chooses to surround himself with these people and their is influenced by their ideas what do you think America will look like in a few years? Why is it that the media will not dig into the background of Senator Obama?

It's so SAD how biASED Newsweek is. How about an article on OBAMA's so-called RELIGION??? How about a HUGE article on the hate-mogerer that RUNS Obama's church -- Reverand Wright???? How about going into great detail all the racist comments he made in his church while Obama was in attendance??? How about mentioning that Rev. Wright laughed when reporters told him Obama had denounced his preachings.....and how Rev. Wright said Obama was just engaging in "political posturing." How about all the BLACK POWER DOMINATION comments Rev. Wright made in CHURCH??? How about that NEWSWEEK??? You are so biased, you can hardly be called reporting anymore. This is an attempt at making Palin sound bad by improper reporting. There are millions of Christians in this country, and only a few who have extreme religious views. Please leave Palin alone, because she will not grant interviews with you once she becomes the next VICE PRESIDENT. May God bless her and this country!

Would you also like to mention that Obama attended for 20+ years the chrch of Rev. Wright who spewed anti white anti Jewish anti American from his pulpit..I'll take witches any day..over that bigot

    • Posted By: allysa @ 10/29/2008 11:24:48 AM

Funny how there were White pastors attending that very same church. Just like Biden's comments about Obama were taken out of context for another "fear tactic" spewing from mcshameless and moose-patty-paylin. I heard the entire comment and the repukelicraps are desparate and running scared themselves.

Obama's mother was white, father black. People on this board need to do a little more research.

What is Obama's belief. I am so sick of stuff being dugg up on her, she is running for VP! Can you not report anything on Obama, I have so many questions about this guy but when questions are asked of him people get mad, why. Has he ever worked at a real job, he keeps saying he is going to help the middle class, what does he even know about the middle class! He says he is going to help the middle class with taxes, does he even know what a middle class family pays in taxes, come on people tell me something about Obama, something that will help me vote for him. Right know I will not vote for hime because everytime he is asked a question, him or Biden they get mad, like Biden did with the reporter in Florida. A news program attacked Palins wardrobe, well this past week she was defending her wardrobe and now CNN is saying why is she talking about her wardrobe, well why did you bring it up in the first place. Why has no one talked about what Obama spends on his wardrobe, and yes someone bought or gave it to him because we all know he has never done an honest days worth of work in his life. I bet his hands are as smooth as a babys but, no scars from real middle class work! Please Do some fair reporting on Barrack HUSSEIN Obama!

So when can we expect the Newsweek article over Barack Obama's religious beliefs? I guess that will just have to wait until after the election right?

    • Posted By: Vivi @ 10/29/2008 11:24:04 AM

God. There was just a huge story on THIS website ALL ABOUT Obama's faith and religion throughout his lifetime. You didn't look though, did you?

You know I've always wondered, so indulge me this: Is ignorance really bliss?

This particular branch of Christianity, casting out demons, speaking in tongues, hanging witches, has not really improved over the last 1,000 years. We do not need a 'faith based VP". We have had 8 years of a "faith based" Chief Executive in Bush and it has mired us in a global war. If she doesn't keep this under control we will all be buying "End of Times" bunkers and lunch boxes. Nutty, Nutty, Nutty. I saw this religion growing up in my home state of West Virginia. It's fundamental to the point of absurdity, literal to the point of meaningless, and dangerous when you have nuclear weapons to back up your messages from God.

I will pray for you....so did you get anything out of church? Did you learn what Jesus did for you. TRUE beleivers in Christ love you no matter what you say or do, because that is what God asks of all of us. He had his son die a horrible death for you to say such hurtful things, hoping that you come to HIM when your in need, that you have others in the church (your family) that pray for you when your in need. It is so sad that you don't see that. This country was built on this religion and that is what made it so great. They believed as of the Bible to love EVERYONE even the ones that don't share the same belief, but live your heart for GOD and do right. You should be turning this toward a man running for President that says he is a Christian with NO EXPERIENCE and going to a church who hates whites. OUR BIBLE DOESNT TEACH THAT. Be careful with what you say. The tongue is the root of ALL EVIL.

His church does not hate whites. You just do not understand blacks, and many whites refuse to accept o understand anything that they feel is not "right." What hypocrits. Yes, I am black, my husband is white and all my life I have loved, lived around and understood the minds of whites, but you people just refuse to Love and/or try to understand that is different from you, because whites tend to think they are so wonderfully right, and caring which is just the opposite and a lie from Satan. Please read, pray and try to understand that God's main commandment is Love. People just do not understand how blacks people and of course other races have suffered for so many hundreds of years and we simply express ourselves differently and that is all Rev. Wright was doing. You people need to go back to school, open your hearts and get out of your boxes. It is the Republican (and yes my husband is a Republican too), way of thinking that has consistently put this country at risk, and got us in the messes we are in. Yes, that self-righteous behavior, which by the way, changes, every time they (Caucasians) want to do something different, i.e., expose your teenage pregnant daughter on stage in front of millions of watching teenagers who are already struggling with their behaviors. Yes, we are to love and support our children no matter what they do, right or wrong; however, wrong is wrong and sin is sin and there is not big or little sin. Teenage pregnancy is wrong and the Republcans cannot make that right. So, look at yourselves and your own behaviors, before you point your fingers at blacks, pastors and teachings, you clearly do not understand!

I am white and I don't believe in God but you are so right! Most whites are bigots and refuse to open their hearts and minds. Most of their churches will not help make this tranistion. I never thought I would see the day that whites would want to revert to the racial divide of the '60's but I think I'm seeing it right now and I'm extremely disappointed in my own race.

I would like to also mention, that the Protestant religion does not have anything to do with witchcraft or witches, or hurting people or animals, but it also has nothing to do with hate, which Obama's preacher preaches.

WOW!!!!!! Way to go Newsweek! This country finally has a woman with executive government experience selected as a Presidential running mate, and you run this crap. Yet, Obama the Boy Scout and Low Blow Joe get a free pass on experiences and associations in there recent past.

I hope you get an award on your great reporting!

You write "In the name of Jesus. Every form of witchcraft is what you rebuke." ... the invoking of Jesus and witches in the same sentence???what the heck is going on?"
Surely you know that when Christians pray they frequently ask God to grant their needs in the name of His beloved Son. This is a Biblical instruction on how to pray. In the name of responsible, unbiased journalism you should infiltrate a group of witches and report what goes on there - IF YOU HAVE THE COURAGE.
Perhaps you could tell me why you find links to terriorists and a religion that blesses murdering Christians and unborn babies more acceptable.

  • Posted By: kholland08 @ 10/29/2008 11:23:22 AM

Let me explain this quote...When a Christian prays they pray to Jesus...it is not rare for a Christian to say in the name of Jesus because that is the GOD they believe in. In addition to this to rebuke means sharp, stern disapproval; reproof; reprimand. So when the pastor praying for Sarah Palin said "In the name of Jesus. Every form of witchcraft is what you rebuke," the pastor was speaking against witchcraft....not "invoking" jesus and witchcraft in the same sentence. My recommendation to the author of this bias piece of media is to review the basic definitions of fundemental words in the english language. As a reporter, you should be ashamed of yourself for not reporting on the facts...every single media outlet in this country is tainted with personal opinion and it is a disgrace to the written word. I want the facts! And this is not factual...it is however, written with ignorance. More importantly, it is assuming that the american people(people who read this article) are not free thinking americans..I will never buy a copy of Newsweek again in light of this story.

It is interesting to note that the writer of this article has little knowledge of Christianity. Latter Day Saints is Not a Christian denomination. Some would like to include them as Christian but they are classed as any group that puts another book above the Bible as having more authority. This classification is cult. They are just an older more established one. However, they do have their positive points, especially about the value of life and family and I do applaude them for that.
As a writer, you need to have more than a "dictionary" knowledge of Christianity to write an article like this. Personally I have problems with Obama's style of Christianity where his views stray from the values set in the Bible. I'd rather have someone like Palin whose beliefs and actions honor God's Word than Obama's whose beliefs dishonor God.

Merlin, exactly how do you relate the two? There is far more evidence for the truth of Christiany than the argument that its a "mental illness." However, SCIENCE proves believing you hear voices or think you are really from Mars IS mental illness. By the way, Science has proven creation in many cases. Please read my inital response a few posts down, if you care to truly educate yourself. Do your research man!

You can say what you want about Sarah Palin or Christian beliefs. My advice is to read the Bible and you will learn what millions of other Christians believe. The Last Days will come and yes, the Lord Jesus will return. Those of you who didn't accept Him as your Lord and Saviour will be caught off guard. Christians do believe that the Bible is the inspiration of God. Yes, you will get those few whose interpretation is twisted. Just like you get those radical Muslims twisting the Q'uran. But there is only one God, one Son, and one Holy Spirit. One truth. Every molecule on this planet came from some origin with a perfect design to support life from beginning to end. You can call it the Big Bang, but I call it God. The only perfect definition of how to live in this world is through knowing his Son. In His perfection, he chose his disciples to carry out the perfect plan that can be tested and tried to always produce the best outcome for all of mankind. Take any situation and apply the teachings of Jesus and you will always find comfort, peace, and love. What is so wrong with that? Yes, the Bible does speak of the Last days because they will come. All Christians know and accept that the Last days will come. There are millions of us out here. Will you crucify us too? I dare you.

I find this article to be misinformed. Though the author clearly did some homework it seems he takes many things out of context. The reality is that people of faith do stand with an odd system of beliefs. However, I do believe that is the point. It is faith. Something that is common place requires little to no faith. Embracing God sending his son Jesus to the earth to live as an example, die on a cross as a sacrifice for the mistakes of all mankind, resurrecting from the dead and ascending to heaven is far-fetched to the natural mind. The possiblity that one being can suffer for the rescuing of all humanity, and that by believing this story, confessing our faults, and turning from an old life can save us from ourselves is a challenging idea even for believers. However, I believe people aroudn the world and throughout history can identify when I say that there is something inside the heart of mankind that wants to believe and needs to believe. You can be critical if you want of Sarah Palin and her stance in the religious world but I can assure you that millions throughout time stand in agreement with the notion that Jesus is real and God cares that much about humanity.

I don't care where she goes to church or what she believes or doesn't believe. I don't care if she hates witches or loves them. I don't care if she thinks abortion is morally wrong, I don't care if she thinks homosexuality is a sin, and I don't care if she thinks monkeys weren't our ancestors. I don't even care if she believes that the End is near.

What I care about is her assumption that the rest of us need to believe what she believes, and that those of who don't believe are not worthy of equal protection under the law, or have a right to privacy, and a right to our own beliefs.

What I care about is when her beliefs get in the way of my beliefs.

I care that she would appoint judges to the Supreme Court who would infringe on a woman's right to make choices about her own body, I care that she would even think about banning books, and I care that she thinks one religion - hers - is superior to anyone else's.

She can have her Jesus and witches, her bible prophesies, she can even have the Last Frontier.

I believe in fairness and separation of church and state.

So far, I haven't seen anything telling me that Sarah Palin shares my beliefs..

Comment: You are a person of wisdom and intelligence. Your comment bares great truth and is the attitude we need to move America forward, not backward as McCain/Palin would do.

    Posted By: Jaydon @ 10/29/2008 10:35:27 AM
Comment: can you please reference one time when she asked anyone to believe what she believed or that she tried to impose her relegion on anyone. If we voted an atheist into office, a catholic, an epistical, a methodist, a mormon they would all have their own belief or unbelief.. it is character that counts and from your comments it looks like you have none..

    Posted By: C. MacLean @ 10/29/2008 10:54:43 AM
Comment: Yes, her refusal to support a woman's right to make choices about her body is one example where she would impose her religious beliefs on others who don't believe as she does.

It is not up to her to decide.

As I said, I don't care about her religious beliefs, but I do care when her beliefs infringe on my rights. Christianity is not the issue.

What Sarah Palin might do as an elected official because she is believes an evangelical Christian philosoph, is. And frankly, Obama was subjected to the same scrutiny, and then some. People questioned his beliefs, his minister's beliefs, and made all kinds of statements about whether his religious beliefs were acceptable.

I don't care about his beliefs, or his crazy minister's beliefs.

What I care about is that nothing I have heard come out of Obama's mouth about his beliefs tells me he will use his beliefs to infringe on my rights.

I can't say the same for Sarah Palin.

I am a Christian and I was not shocked by this article. I think it was interesting to see a facet of the lense the reporters, and perhaps to some extent, secular American culture views our faith. To be sure within Christianity there are many minor issues of difference. I believe one of the other posts put it well when they said that all people who believe in an "end times" tend to lean toward believing they will be part of that generation, and that belief is intentional and beneficial. It should be balanced with the knowledge that Jesus himself said he choses not to know when it will be. For those responding to this article that have a personal relationship with Christ I caution your desire to respond with a caustic retort. We should not be surprised when the world rejects Jesus. He told us they would do so and that we likewise would be persecuted. For those reading these comments who do not have a relationship with Jesus but have always wondered what that belief is about, it is simply this: We believe that people were created by God for a relationship to be enjoyed in free will and that our spirit and soul are eternal. We freely chose to reject relationship with God instead choosing our own way. This self worship is to deny God His right place as the King and therefore is idolatry and a sin. Sin is simply anything outside of God's perfect plan for us that we put in front of Him. Because of sin we became spiritually dead and our relationship with God was severed. Unable to repair this relationship ourselves God stepped into human history in the person of Jesus. Fulfilling all Old Testament prophecy Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, was unjustly convicted and crucified as a complete atonement for all the sins of humanity, and rose again after three days. He did this as part of God's plan and as a gift of grace that those who would beleive in him, confess their sin and seek after Him would have their relationship with God restored and live eternally in the presence of God. Jesus was abundantly clear this was the only provision God made for us to be spiritiually reunited with him. Without acceptance of Jesus as the Christ our eternal soul and spirit have a default setting to eternal seperation from God, also called Hell. Hell was not created for us. It was created for Lucifer/Satan/the Devil and the angels who rebelled against God. But because God's nature does not allowing Him to be in the presence of sin and we are in our human nature sinful without the atonement of Jesus Christ we condemn ourselves to Hell when we fail to acknowledge Jesus and accept His salvation. God's desire is for us to know Him through the redeeming work of Jesus Christ.
