H.L.Mencken once pointed out that there is nothing about any religion that exempts them from scrutiny and ridicule; that it was rather difficult to take seriously beliefs that hold fast to the idea that a gaseous vertebrate rules our lives. Now I am convinced there is something to this existence thing that merits closer consideration than has heretofore been applied-discoveries in physics, biology and the like point to some odd coincidences which, broadly interpreted, suggest the existence of a deity, such as it is. I hew to the funny side of it all, wherein the optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds and the pessimist is afraid that might just be so.
Considering the fact that we all have faith that the moment we trip the switch, the lights will turn on-assuming there's a fresh bulb in the socket-no one questions the existence of the stuff called electricity which, according to physicists, behaves more like a liquid than the energy it's purported to be, is actually quite the leap in faith. Yet we all make it, no?
The bottom line is merely this: few take to having alternative beliefs shoved down our throats-the durability of such passions as a flat earth, witches,
democracy, Hittite deities and so forth notwithstanding-and we make remarkable adaptations when they are. Yet this is precisely what the US was founded as a global sanctuary for. The one place on earth where you could find that elusive woman who would dress up in a skimpy Nazi outfit and hit you with a warm squash.
Sanctuary. Let's keep it that way. If you're festering to do otherwise, there are other countries more amenable to your tastes and I suggest you go there...
