My questions is this: (1) How does this new President elect benefit ME AND MY FAMILY? You know how - nothing is going to be done to help me or my family with our crisis - whatever
that may be. In fact, ALL the issues they proclaim they each stand on mean absolutely nothing to the average person.

ANSWER: Remember these historic words? Words from a Democratic hero, JFK (well not exactly, but you'll recognize the quote/statement):

"Ask not what your country can do for you ... but what you can do for your country."

Now, I only bring this up because a Democrat said it. If a Republican had said that ... well ... enough said.

Bottom line, at least in my opinion, the government doesn't owe me poop in terms of gov. handouts (aka a FREE LUNCH). If anything, they only owe me a country where capitalism (free markets) can flourish.

Now don't mistake capitalism with W's corrupted liassez-faire system (the principle that the economy works best if private industry is not regulated and markets are totally free).

In fact, I do believe that it's FAIR that gov. ask for "REASONABLE" tax dollars for schools, important social programs, Soc Sec., federal and local law enforcement and fire, etc. BUT THE KEY WORD IS "REASONABLE" TAX $$$!

The problem is they always ask for TOO MUCH!!! Anyway, out of that those generated tax buck-a roos, Big Gov. owes me reasonable govmt oversight i.e., Gov. Watchdogs that enforce REASONABLE Big Corp Rules & Regs. Because we've lacked any REAL gov. oversight over the past 16 years (thru Wild Bill's and W???s Prez terms) we have now found ourselves in a heap of trouble.

If I've said this once, I've said it a million times, Wild Bill turned a blind-eye to all the shenanigans that were happening in the stock market during the '90's (manufacture Dot.Com boom & bust era) and old 'W' turned a blind-eye to all the poop that was going on in the real estate & mortgage industry, Big Corp corruption, Banking Industry, hell, you name it! And now folks! It's time to pay the piper back as a result of THESE TWO WONDERFUL PRES???S!!! C'MON BIG BRO! WHERE ARE YA WHEN WE REALLY NEED YOU? Conveniently asleep huh?

I've been yelling and screaming about this crap for almost two years now. Hell, long before the mainstream media started reporting on this crap. And don't think for a second that most of the dirt bags in the media weren't aware of all this crap. They were! THEY ARE!!!

They just held off on reporting this sh!t until an election year. A political move by the Liberal Elitists (aka Democrooks) of this country to ensure a win come Nov.

Bottom line ... YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT MA'AM ??? WE'RE ALL BEING PLAYED! By both party's!! How pathetic is that?! (Cont below)

    • Posted By: LDJ Alabama @ 10/29/2008 9:54:02 PM

BUT THAT???S NOT "EXCUSE" TO SKIP VOTING THIS YEAR! In fact, this is one of the most important elections in modern history! Pivotal moment!!! So here are your choices:

      1. We could either take ten steps backwards with a B.O. presidency. Which will put in place a Commi or Socialistic Society. (see actual definitions below). Heck! With a Democratic senate and house lookout folks!

      OR

      2. We can take our chances with a Commander-in-Chief who possesses important military experience and has a long track record in the senate.

*Definition of Communism: The Marxist-Leninist version of a classless society in which capitalism is overthrown by a working-class revolution that gives ownership and control of wealth and property to the state.

*Defintion of Socialism: A political theory or system in which the means of production and distribution are controlled by the people* and operated according to equity and fairness rather than market principles

(Side note: People? More like Big Gov.)

YOU DECIDE FOLKS! WHICH IS IT GOING TO BE?

      COMMUNISM/SOCIALISM OR CAPITALISM?

Since America is already party socialist, I fail to see our point. Also, where is the evidence to show Obama's plans are in line with Marxism? Considering the 3 decade-long transfer of wealth courtesy of the GOP to the upper echelons of the business and political world, Obama's plans are a much needed balancing of the equation, and nothing more.

I'm a highly committed Republican, a social scientist at a major university. Yet I strongly support Sarah Palin and reject the kind of religious smear Newsweek is attempting to carry out here. Palin is a strong, intelligent woman, as even many Democrat women are now admitting.

Newsweek, on the other hand, is nothing more than raggy propaganda. I don't allow it in my home, I tell my students not to bother with it, and I'm only here because this disgusting hit piece is mentioned on another web site.

    • Posted By: benkrapf @ 10/30/2008 2:07:29 AM

The media praises Palin to avoid being labeled misogynistic.

  • Posted By: kameshe @ 10/29/2008 11:07:03 AM

There is nothing wrong with protestant religion. And if the ministers are praying for blessings in someone's life or healing them, how can you make this look like it's bad. At least her ministers aren't preaching hate against America and white people like Obama's minister does. And Obama went to his church for 15 or 20 years. Also Palin is against abortion and Obama isn't. The Church and Bible definitely is against abortion. So if I were you, I would question Obama's religion.

    • Posted By: Vivi @ 10/30/2008 1:52:01 AM

Please, offer a defense of your claim that the Bible is "against abortion!"

Where does it say life begins at conception??
Where does it even mention abortion?!!

Abortion existed during Biblical times, and it was very popular.
Why did God pass laws on hairstyles, but not on the "Christian" issue of abortion?
Why didn't Jesus feel that abortion was important enough to comment on?

This mystifies me. Who decides that anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage positions are "Christian," and who decides that they should eclipse the true message of Christ: to spread love?
Loving all people is greeting contempt with kindness, and showing mercy, charity, and forgiveness even o those who haven't earned it. This is the most repeated sentiment in the Bible, yet obviously not the most cherished, judging by the self-proclaimed "Christians" who post inflammatory, hateful, and viciously false statements on this forum.

Elvis Presley grew up attending an Assembly of God Church in Mississippi and Memphis, TN. That is where Elvis first began singing and where he learned to love gospel music. The whole world knows the story about Elvis Presley and what a kind hearted and generous person he was. Elvis still ranks Number 1 in the world as making the most money as a dead person. Instead of worrying about Governor Sarah Palin's church people need to take a closer look at the church Barack Obama attended for 20 years where he listened to hate filled sermons from his pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. By the way Rev. Jeremiah Wright just built an $11 million dollar mansion to retire in. Poor down-trodden black man. America sure treated him awful, didn't they? Also you need to remember that Barack Obama attended Muslim training in Indonesia when he lived there as a child since both his Kenyan father and his Indonesian stepfather were both muslims. Also remember if you vote for Barack Obama you will be making all of the middle east Arab dictators and the Al Queda and Hezbollah and Palestianian leaders happy as well as Fidel Castro of Cuba and the dictator in Venzuela happy. They are all endorsing Barack Hussein Obama. All of the Arabs in the middle east are tickled pink about Obama running for president. They will be disappointed if John McCain wins because they know they will get their a*s kicked if they mess with America when John McCain is the president. If you care about keeping America safe and democratic vote for John McCain/Sarah Palin on November 4, 2008!!!!! NOBAMA!!!!! NOBAMA!!!!!

If Palin believes everything you say she believes, and Pentecostals believe everything you say they believe, none of them have anything to be ashamed of. Your personal disagreement with their views is your choice while their belief is a freedom guaranteed by the Constitution.

Apocalyptic literature, belief, and preaching is a genre that is at least 2,000 years old if the most liberal theologians are consulted, and as much as 3,000 years old if more conservative timing is used. The authors inference that apocalyptic is not believable is a smear against a religious tradition that has every right to be taught and respected.

Our American culture is filled with cultural reference to apocalyptic literature. Apocalypse Now, the X-Files, Armageddon, and other movies borrow elements for artistic purposes.

The point of view depicted in this article demands that science be the only worldview treated with respect. In fact, if it were not for mythological perspectives (and I mean mythology as a real experience which cannot be verified by science) we would know a great deal less about the history and cultures of the world. For instance, Homers 'Odyssey' was recently shown to be closely correlated to actual celestial observations but is written as mythology.

The author criticizes a perspective which is valid and vital to our culture. Most of the criticism is only possible because of the openness and truthfulness of these people. I would perceive them as 'nutty' or odd if they were preaching these things secretly and hiding their beliefs behind generic religion. Instead, they are open and honest. If in fact Sarah Palin believes everything implied in this article, she has every right to believe.

  • Posted By: Gospa @ 10/30/2008 12:22:56 AM

Why is it it that the Constitution is always misquoted concerning religion and saying politics and religion don't belong together, which it doesn't really say. Ye, everyone keeps bringing Sarah Palin's religion to the forefront. What is the point to be so derogatory about her beliefs, or try to turn them into something that is evil.
Unfortunately, the problem is anti Christian bigotry, as usual.

I am concerned as this is a nation where church and state are supposed to be separate. Yet we insist on dragging Religion into the oval office where it doesn't belong. When leaders start invoking God, watch out! When you have one who is paranoid enough to worry about witches and/or witchcraft...we're REALLY in trouble. That's when Big Brother starts watching you.... Oh sorry...he already is thanks to Bush/Cheney. Administration

If Obama was truly a Christian, Then he would be Pro-Life

    • Posted By: Vivi @ 10/29/2008 10:06:07 AM

Exactly, because Jesus said life begins at conception, right?

HA! Show me where. I know scripture well, and abortion is never mentioned even once.

This is especially interesting because through Biblical times, there was an herb which was well-known to induce miscarriage. Women took it for this purpose quite often in North Africa and the Mid East.

In fact women in the time of Jesus took used this early "abortion drug" so frequently that it became extinct before the middle ages.

Considering that abortion was going on in Israel and Syria and Jordan and all over, at the same time that the the books of the Bible were being written and when Jesus was preaching, and that it was so immensely popular and well-known...
      ...
I find it curious that abortion is a "Christian issue," seeing as God and his son and all their friends never felt it merited mentioning.

      • Posted By: viler @ 10/29/2008 1:31:19 PM

God did mention not to kill needlessly is what He means , it was allowed for war and self defense. Never because of inconvenience or just for the sake of killing. Man has sinned since Eve and Adam in the garden of eden. So they had women doing it. But they shall kill, what do you not understand life is life. A cell is a living organism its been proven. They is a way out of raising a child adoption. Not so hard. Abortion is nothing but a selfish act.

        • Posted By: Vivi @ 10/29/2008 11:30:40 PM

OOOHHHH! So when God wrote "thou shalt not kill" what he really MEANT the commandment to say was "kill for war or self-defense, but just not... needlessly... and to clear up any ambiguity, lets say life begins at conception and abortion falls into the needless category."

          That would have ran long..

At least you are able to explain what God really means better than those goofy prophets he chose!

    SARAH PALIN for VISA:

    Wardrobe: $150,000

    Makeup Artist: $22,800

    Hair Stylist: $10,000

Sending her back to Alaska November 4th: PRICELESS.

Wardrobe cost was closer to $300,000, but only $150k has been proven to be taken from campaign contributions directly, the rest of the money trail is still being investigated. Glad she went into politics to clean up government. Or was that to clean up while in the government?

hey brian james alexender! Why is it that anything that seems spooky, unchristian, and arcane, is considered: "The Devil's Work"?

    • Posted By: Brian James Alexander @ 10/29/2008 5:52:51 AM

Once again, this all depends upon your viewpoint of the Scriptures. If the Scriptures are the Word of God, then all occultic practices would have to be regulated to the workings of The Devil. If The Bible is not the Word of God, then anything goes. Most people in America today believe in one of two things. They either believe in the existence of "a God," but not The Bible's version of it, or they believe in naturalistic materialism---everything is a byproduct of random chance and coincidence. I'm the first to admit that traditional Christians, like myself, are a rarity. We comprise maybe only 10% of the public's interest.

      • Posted By: empathy400 @ 10/29/2008 6:21:45 AM

hmm I wonder why there is such a rarity , maybe because its unhuman , insensitive, ignorant, and just completly ridiculous , but I just wonder why if there is such a rarity why are most of them writing these comments, why don't they just get over it and live there own lives with there god and leave everybody else alone, instead of preaching all this hate and saying if we don't believe in your god then were the devil , it makes no sense, what's the purpose , it doesn't change who I am

        • Posted By: kevin45 @ 10/29/2008 7:00:50 AM

Empathy400, I don't appreciate you pushing your beliefs on me. Just because you think it's inhuman etc etc...it doesn't change who I am ;) SERIOUSLY people...come on! These are comments, opinions, discussions. No one is pushing their beliefs on anyone...yet that's like the 5th comment that has accused christians of doing so. Grow up.

          • Posted By: empathy400 @ 10/29/2008 10:59:30 PM

I am not pushing my beliefs on you or anyone , I am just saying we can all have are beliefs but still treat others with respect and as individuals , and not preach all this hate and negativity, and I don't like people who talk about stuff they don't understand when people say witchcraft is from the devil its hateful and completly untrue , do your research read a book about witchcraft besides your bible, its kind of hypocritical because all these christians are able to say all this crap about witchcraft and how its from satin , but then us witches state that it comes from nature and we believe in karma , and we do good things, and people say were imposing are beliefs onto them , which isn't true you see were not like christians we don't force people to do things or to join us and become are followers , we are who we are and people are either witches or they aren't , this isn't about beliefs , its about common respect for all mankind regardless of religion, race, sexual prefence , gender or age , that's the point I was getting too , and no it doesn't matter what people say I am who I am, and I will not change for anyone , I just believe people can state what they believe in without getting nasty and hateful, and that is what I was trying to bring into these comments which are full of hate and judgment, but obviously there is no hope for you people so I am going to stop trying and I am going to help people who respect what I say and feel , I have people in my life who support and love me for who I am , I don't need this kind of negativity in my life, and I don't need to talk to you kind of people , I am not going to waste my time writing these comments anymore because there are people out there who need my help, who want my help, and a world that is falling apart , and these pointless intellectual discussions about how your religion is right , and mine isn't is just that pointless and selfish and I have more meaningful things to do in my life , I am who I am get over it, go back to your pettty ignorant life and bible , and leave me out of it , because you or anybody else writing these comments doesn't effect me , and it doesn't change who I am , so why don't you grow up!!!

The Book of Revelations has been around for almost 2,000 years. During these 2000 years, the end of the world has been predicted based on Revelations at least 10,000 times. Every single believer who ever said that believed it to be true with all their heart. However, it never was true.

I read the Bible frequently, and I find Revelations fascinating. But the popular notion of it is no more than a mental technicolor video game that people play in their heads. Good exercise for the imagination, but not very pertinent to the meaning of the text.

Possibly (just possibly, because all interpretations of the Bible are just interpretations), Revelations is a metaphor for how each individual should "clean house" in their soul and purify themselves enough so that they can see God's presence here on earth. The "end of the world" might just be a metaphor for the end of the worldly ego.

The reason that Revelations comes at the end of the New Testamtent is because churches have argued over whether or not it even belongs in the bible at all. It was written 100 years after Christ died. Martin Luther considered Revelations to be "neither apostolic nor prophetic" and said that "Christ is neither taught nor known in it." No-one is even sure who wrote Revelations, there are three known possible authors, all going by the name of John, none of whom is the apostle John..

For Christians who actually read the Bible, it is clear that the Word of the Lord is what matters. Christ is not quoted in Revelations. Any Christian who uses Revelations to cast aspersions on people who have different religious beliefs is clearly not hearing the teachings of Jesus.

If Sarah Palin were thrust into the Oval Office, yes, I would feel completely comfortable with her making the difficult decisions needed to protect this nation. She has the judgment, temperment, and philosophy needed to protect this country.

Obama, on the other hand, might or might not do the right thing. I know he wants to reduce our military forces and cut defense spending. He'll have to in order to pay for his hundreds of trillions of dollars of new socialist programs.

I saw Sarah Palin last night here at Penn State. She packed a small gym with 7,500 people, mostly students. They had to turn people away. She's a common down to earth woman who's been a savy and effective governor. She'll make a fantastic VP.

Hang the media and Newsweek articles like this one.

It's not her place to forgive my errant soul, or save it for that matter. The last thing we need in this country is another crazed right wing religous NUT CASE, who believes in witches. Wake up America!

Ever hear of Wiccans, Voodoo, and Satanists? You don???t have to be a crazy conservative right wing Christian to believe in witches or the practice of witchcraft.

I would LOVE to hear your definitions of wicca, voodoo, and satanism.

Where is voodoo practiced and how?

        Do satanists worship satan?

Is wicca more similar to spell-casting or to Native American tradition?

        Will the answers surprise me?

Even committed Republicans who support McCain are asking themselves if they really would take the risk of putting our country into Sarah Palin's hands. Many prominent Republicans, including Colin Powell, have said that Palin is not prepared to be Vice President. Being VP requires a depth of knowledge on national and international issues. Palin is ignorant of these matters. And being President requires great intelligence and a clear-eyed world view, one untainted by religious fanaticism. Look at the mess we got with the under-qualified Dubya, and even he seems smarter and less fanatical than Palin. McCain is 72 years old, with high cholesterol and high blood pressure; his father and grandfather each died of heart attacks at age 72. McCain's Vice President HAS to be ready to lead. And by lead, I am not referring to a full speed charge into Armageddon.

For those of you who don't know, Palin belongs to a fundamentalist church that believes the end of the world is near: that war, financial distress and famine will kill off the sinful non-believers, and that when this holocaust occurs all good Christians will be taking refuge in Alaska. Furthermore, her church conducts witch hunts -- they actually use prayer to locate "witches" in their community, then publicly brand them as witches, and hold them responsible for everything that goes wrong in town. (Honestly, I think the long winters must be getting to their minds.) You can go on YouTube and watch videos of Palin participating during sermons like this. She stands on the altar facing the members. The congregation stands with outstretched hands, trancelike, speaking in tounges while the priest prays to "keep Sarah safe from all forms of witchcraft."

Could you REALLY feel comfortable knowing that a woman who holds these beliefs would have the power to declare war and deploy nuclear missiles?

  • Posted By: Millions of Reasons 2 @ 10/29/2008 11:56:51 AM

Regarding belief in witches, it is very important to know how many people out there actually believe in witchcraft and believe they are practicing effectual rituals and practices that are intended to alter the lives of other people, often in very negative ways. In this respect, regardless of whether Palin believes in broom pilot witches, certainly she would accept prayer and public outreach for acknowledgement and protection from those people who would intend negative influence and harm towards her.

    • Posted By: Vivi @ 10/29/2008 10:31:08 PM

      You didn't finish.

You said, to paraphrase, that you felt:

"it was very important for people to know how many people identify as witches and practice witchcraft rituals intended to alter other people's lives in often negative way."

So? How many are there? You must know the answer. You claim that the answer is "very important," how could you say that if you didn't know what it was?

The ravenous masses have heeded your foreboding!
And the want to know HOW MANY?
      Give em a number.

It's really strange, too, because I know druids and wiccans and people various other earth based spiritual persuasions and NONE of them cast spells to hurt people. They must be hiding in the "pro-America" parts of the country, I guess...

I cannot believe that you ran this article. You didn't examine Obama's church, they have changed their website, and no longer have sermons from Wright, nor his magazine. And when did you ever listen to his sermons, and note that Obama could have been in the congregation. This is one more example of "being in the tank" for Obama. And by the way, there is not any theology in the AG that calls for any participation in any apocalyptic events. WE believe that such an end of the world may happen and that we must be personally ready to meet God as any moment, and we attempt to tell others to be ready to do the same. WE are not hoping to push the nuclear button so as to bring about such an end, as you so imply.

    • Posted By: elithian @ 10/29/2008 10:16:35 PM

  • Posted By: Darwin Akbar @ 10/29/2008 6:42:41 PM

This is a truly disgraceful hit piece. If you want to know Sarah Palin's religious beliefs, why don't you ask her, instead of dreaming up imaginary scenarios? Moreover, we KNOW what Obama believes - he sat in Rev. Wright's church for a dozen years ("Yep. Every 11 am service.") but somehow missed Hate Whitey Day, AIDS Conspiracy Day, God Damn America! Day or US of KKK Day. The fact that the man whom he entrusted with the religious education of his children is a racist, raving lunatic is apparently of no concern to Newsweek. Your magazine is lower than the lowest tabloid trash.

    • Posted By: elithian @ 10/29/2008 10:11:07 PM

First, I don't ask her because I can't; neither can the media. Secondly I don't ask because I think she is a liar. Thirdly, Newsweek did do the articles on Wright and Obama. I guess you don't really know what you are talking about. As a subscriber I think Newsweek has kept its real readers informed. They have written the Good, the bad, and the Ugly about both Obama and McCain.
Finally most media outfits are owned by Republicans and managed by Republicans.
