There are a lot of well-meaning but unconvincing arguments against same-sex marriage, but if you know where to look, there are also a lot of compelling and well-reasoned arguments -- many of which contain no quotes from the Bible or strictly religious evidence.

Here are a couple of them.

Common sense has just left the building. Marriage is between a MAN and a WOMAN. Being of opposite genders is part of the whole deal. Being "married" will not legitimize your gay relationship...no matter how much you "love" each other. My apologies to everyone for engaging in this conversation with Hal, and for suggesting that everyone or anyone religious fits in the same box, or is anything less than an intelligent, spiritual being because of thier religion. I think I can safely predict the response of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: ???Of course not!???

Can you guess, maybe, why? Do you remember the exciting search for a father and a mother in each generation of your ancestors? Two parents . . . four grandparents . . . eight great-grandparents . . . . Your pedigree branches, again, and again, and again, every branch comprising one man and one woman. Through countless generations, thousands of couples, one man and one woman, each contributed to the life that you call your own.

You need only to examine your own pedigree to know why homosexual marriage is wrong.

Scorn all religious ethics if you will, but please consider the simple, logical, secular ethics of Immanuel Kant, commonly summarized as ???What if everyone did it????

Kant provides a case that would have saved the world from its present credit crisis: Suppose a person borrows money without intending to repay the loan. If everyone did it, no person would lend money anymore, and commerce would come to an end. Therefore borrowing without intent to repay is immoral.

Now apply Kant's ethics to your choice. If everyone entered into same-sex marriage, the human race would come to an end. Therefore homosexual marriage is immoral.

If the primary (or sole) purpose of civil marriage is to publicly recognize that two people love each other and enjoy having sex with each other ... well, why does the government need to be involved in that? Give everybody civil unions to deal with property and civil rights, and let private institutions (churches, etc.) handle the actual marriages.

But I hope that most people recognize that there is a good reason why marriage is both a private and a civil institution -- because children are involved. Civil marriage exists because the government has an interest in ensuring that children produced from such sexual unions enter into a stable, married family.

But consider the differing dynamics of gay and straight sexual unions. There is never any chance that a homosexual sexual union will produce a child, and unlike with a heterosexual couple, there's no such thing as an unplanned gay pregnancy.

Thus, one could argue that the government has reason to concern itself with heterosexual sex and the context in which it is performed (i.e. in marriage or outside of marriage) but not so with homosexual sex; it is in the government's interest that all heterosexual sex take place within marriage -- but the government need not have any similar concern about homosexual sex.

As a Christian, I don't think it's the churchs right to judge or tell gays what to do. God is the only one who should be judging. I am so tired of these so called Christians quoting bible scriptures to prove their point. I am tired of the silly rallys. Kids standing on the corner with signs. It's annoying! My other concern is once we start telling gays what to do, what's next. By the way, it seems that gays marriages last longer than most straights. I voted No on 8!!! Oh and "TheVigil" The Bible says let the person without sin cast the first stone. Think twice before you judge someone, especially if you have never walked in their shoes..

Gay Marriage? I cannot support gay marriage. Yet being mean spirited about human need... pain... loneliness... suffering... anger... frustration... experienced by gays and lesbians are real. I do not pretend to know how this feels. There are sides to gay / lesbian relationships that straight people do not understand. Radical Fundamental Evangelical Christians and other religions teach that homosexuality is an abomination. It is true the Bible says this. Toh Ay Vaw is the Hebrew word for abomination: disgusting, detestable, polluted or filthy. Toh Ay Vaw basically defines an incorrect action, a mistake. However, homosexuality is not the only action in the Bible defined as wrong. Simply cooking a milk product with meat is abomination for Jews. Sleeping with a neighbor???s spouse is abomination. A woman wearing men???s clothing is abomination. Straying from the path is abomination. Having a haughty heart is abomination. Lying lips are an abomination.

Human kind must be careful not to be so quick judging others! G-d is the Judge! Judgment belongs to G-d! Loving and being kind to our neighbor is our responsibility.

I'm responding to the comment that the reason that a brother and sister getting married is wrong is they could cause genetic defects in their offspring. So then a brother marrying a brother would be okay or a father marrying his adult son? If you say that we have no right to tell people who they can marry then we would have to marry these people.
