How many times does the bible condemn homosexuality? (Hint: it's a trick question. 'Homosexuality' was coined in the 20th century and is a different concept than anything mentioned in prior translations, which refer only to acts.)

How many times does the bible condemn same-sex acts? About as many times as Paul refers to the apocalypse occurring in his lifetime and advises against traditional marriage. And less than it condones slavery.

Leviticus 18:22: "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."

Romans 1:26-27: "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."

As a native Californian who is also a Christian man, I pray to God that this initiative based on fear and hatred will fail, and that the constitution of our great Golden State will remain intact. Even though I do not personally agree with the lifestyle, it is not my place nor anyone else's to dictate to people who they can and cannot marry. To do so is arrogant and wrong. Our first duty as Christians is to love, not to judge.

Actually we are called to determine right from wrong not based on our understanding, but God's understanding and will. So saying homosexuality is wrong is not judging but repeating what scripture has taught us (if you are a Christian).

Leviticus 5:15 "When a person commits a violation and sins unintentionally in regard to any of the LORD's holy things, he is to bring to the LORD as a penalty a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel. It is a guilt offering."

Leviticus 15:19 " 'When a woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening.

Leviticus 19:19 (partial) "Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed."

Leviticus 19:27 "Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard."

Leviticus 25:44-46 "Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly."

There isn't room in the comment size limit to post all of these.

Marriage is a cornerstone of civilization. As old as civilization itself. It is the most unique of contracts becuase to be eleigible for it, you must be of opposite sexes. Only modern thinking is arrogant enought to think that it can change what has been an established rule of humanity since the dawn of civilized man...and expect no reprecussions from it. Civilizations have risen and fallen...and always fall when there is a decline in it's moral code of behavior.

Ok, really? Marriage is REALLY a cornerstone? Then maybe we should make it harder to get married for same-sex couples. Divorce rates are astronomical and people get married/divorced on a whim these days. It's ok for Britney Spears to be married for 2 days, Pam Anderson to be married multiple times for only a few weeks, etc. but it's NOT ok for a loving couple to be married? What's wrong with you? I believe in God and yes, I do believe that homosexuality is ultimately a sin in the Christian religion. However, I also believe in loving my fellow humans and trying to be open-minded. Jesus preached love and acceptance, something I try to keep in mind every day. Some of the most wonderful people I have the privilege of knowing are gay and they are also some of the most committed couples. They value marriage because they can't have it. They realize how important and sacred it is, because they don't get the joy of calling someone their wife or husband. It's ridiculous and disgusting how people like you take that joy away from them, yet think it's just peachy for heteros to play musical chairs with spouses.

that's fine, but straight couples should not get civil rights then. sorry, no more special protections, legal, and tax benefits for you.

keep your marriages for your church and leave the government out of it.

wow Hal and Twister..is that all you two have? the bible? i thought jesus dies for our sins? by the way, with your hate-filled speech, you're committing sins that are much worse than loving someone of the same sex.

    in case you forgot:

    "Love your neighbor as yourself."
"Judge not, lest ye be judged."
"Whatsoever you do to the least of your brothers, you do unto me."
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."

you're not following Jesus's teachings, but the words of men who has their own agendas. do you really know why the bible is against male homosexuality and masterbation? because they lived at a time when they thought that sperm was all that was needed for procreation; they didn't understand the role of the egg. therefore, masterbation and sodomy was seen as a waste fo life.

also, the bile says nothing about lesbianism, so lesbianism isn't a sin.

People like msdiva will make gay marriage win. They think if they vote NO, they are AGAINST gay marriage. It's the opposite. I think the NO votes that were meant to be against (YES) will win it for the ***.

Why do Republicans insist on butting their noses into people's personal lives? You can call me liberal for saying that people should be able choose who they marry. As a veteran who defended liberty, you should be able to choose your spouse no matter what sex. That's freedom folks.

do we really care? Only liberals in your editorial board cares

You gay people have a hard row to hoe to establish some status for gay marriage in the American society. But, one way to get a foothold might be to make a record of reliability in the duration of marriage. If you can far exceed the heterosexual record for stability in marriage and keep a very low divorce rate, then maybe you can silence the critics who seem to think that they have the right to tell you what to do and not to do with your lives.
I am an old heterosexual man, but I have come to see your plight with an open mind. Those who wrote the Constitution of the United States and whoever the many were who wrote the Bible over a long period of time just didn't think that these marriages would ever take place. Hence, there is just speculation as to what they thought, because they really didn't speak to this situation. This means that you are making the history that will lead to the laws which will finally govern your relationships. You have a chance do it right so that those who follow you can live some sort of a peaceable life. If you screw it up, then it will be your fault that this will continue to be an historical farce and we can go back to the old persecutions. Think about it. And good luck to you.

Sorry, but it's not about civil rights. The California State Constitution already guarantees all the same rights enjoyed by married couples to domestic partners. It's about not letting a very small minority redefine marriage for the rest of us and not letting them force their agenda on our children. And for those of you who think this isn't about education, the state school curriculum - in particular the English course guidelines - are already being modified to include a heavy dose of gay, lesbian and transgender literature all designed to make kids think gay marriage is the same as traditional marriage - all because of the Supreme Court's rash decision! Most parents don't want to happen here, what happened in Massachusetts, where parents couldn't even opt their kids out of being taught about gay marriage.

I'm sorry if so many gay '"married" couples will be affected when Prop 8 passes, but there were a number of them who were wise enough to wait until after the election - unlike our State Supreme Court.

I've already voted "Yes" on Prop 8 and I fully expect that it will pass.

Congratulations and may Californians send hateful Prop 8 to defeat!

Don't you worry. It's only a matter of time until LOVE CONQUERS ALL!!! And Congrats on your marriage. Because, my friend, that is exactly what it is, legally binding in a week or not!!!!!
