Besides being a flaming racist, yeah, she's great. Funny--I don't recall Claire Huxtable whining about the world is so unfair like Mrs. Chosen One.

As a white woman with irish grandparents, i want to say something about the concept of race first of all:
Our phenotypes (body types and skin color) reflect our ancestry and the way the evolutionary process
    shaped our bodies over time.

The process of evolution shaped our body to adapt to wherever humans lived on the planet. A longer body stays cooler. A short, stocky body will stay warmer. Needing more Vitamin D (sunlight) favors a northern, white skin. Needing less Vitamin D favors a darker skin. This is not a static process, but an evolving process.

Cultural meaning is superficially placed on top of that.
The concept of 'race' has no substance apart from what is culturally constructed.

This aside, Michelle Obama is totally stunning on every level i can think of and am so glad she is to be our First Lady.

I liked the article and I look forward to seeing how Mrs. Obama will make the role of First Lady uniquely her own. While she is closer to an average Black woman that Halle Barry, Oprah or Beyonce, she is still extraoridnary in a couple of other ways-she has a Harvard and Princeton education and she pulled down over $200K as a lawyer. Honestly, I don't know anyone like that. Too bad she wasn't a teacher or nurse, good professions but much more work-a-day average. But both of the Obama's have the most "average" backgrounds to occupy the White House in any number of years.

Before the election I was in an airport when Michelle Obama walked through. She's tall, especially in three inch heels, and looks like a model. The confidence, grace, strength, and good energy coming off that woman stunned people as she passed them. She was almost floating by. Some people who were I'd say frightened of her glowing personality reacted by leaning away. Men in particular. I suspect from some of the comments here that those types of people are here, but I'm happy to read other more positive comments. She's a positive and glowing example of how many of my black women friends are and have always been. She's educated, so nay sayers call her elitist. She's intelligent so they call her feisty or warn her not to use it so people can feel safer around her. She's got her own opinions so for some reason that translates to being racist or angry. She's a black woman and for some reason people still hold on to the fact that she's dangerous in some way. Fact is, she's an amazing, wife, professional, mother and will be an excellent first lady. Everybody better get ready to learn some things and watch how the rest of the world reacts positively to us for the first time in eight years.

Can we loose this ridiculous label of "African American." I am proud to call myself a Black American woman. What happened to "I'm black and I'm proud." First of all Africa is a continent not a country...okay so is America...but I worked with 5 people from Africa and they are all white. It is the same displaced self-hatred that led black people to celebrate in the streets when O.J. Simpson, a man who did everything he could to distance himself from being black, was acquitted of murder. I was proud when asked on '60 Minutes' about being the 'first African American" to be elected president that Obama side stepped it and spoke of his mother-in-law and others. He gets it. I hope Michelle Obama will embrace her natural hair in one of the many beautiful styles that black women everywhere are starting to embrace. It would suit her beautiful style.

  • Posted By: reader38 @ 12/09/2008 6:19:26 PM

I find it sad to think that anyone would criticize her for how she styles her daughters' hair, although I know it will come. I was a horrible mother for allowing my son to dye his hair blue! In this time in history, we all, every race, need to learn how to live and work with everone else, without the focus being on race. I have known and dealt with those who hate me because I'm white, and there have been racially motivated crimes commited against every race I can think of. When do we become people, as opposed to races?

  • Posted By: DiscipleBBA @ 12/09/2008 12:18:38 PM

Who really cares, I thought all this was to go away, but if color continues to come up (especially black) what has been accomplished. MLK said a person should not be Judged by his or her skin color, then maybe the other side of the coin is also worthy of remembering or practicing. Stop repeating the same mistakes. Do we want it to go away, should it go away? Then practice what has been preached by your own revered , quit trying to become superior or have a double standard and punish those white folk's until you have gotten your revenge. Just look at how many organizations are for black only, schools for black only, and many others have come into being out of revenge. I believe GOD said , "Vengeance is Mine". Let stop this on going hate tit for tot ! Grow up , get a life .

Wow - the ignorance of some of these posters like Pudbert and Rocky 2001. What proof do you have that she is an angry racist black woman other than her skin is dark? Or that all she can teach you is how to make Kool-aid?

Americans still have a lot to overcome.

A beautiful and intelligent black woman steps into prominence, and all they (and others like them) can see are caricatures and stereotypes - how sad!

  • Posted By: Pudbert @ 12/08/2008 4:59:29 PM

She taught me that an angry racist black woman can get away with the black double standard of racism.

  • Posted By: Rocky2001 @ 12/08/2008 3:01:33 PM

I already know how to make Kool-Aid...so I'm good. Thanks anyway.

reading this article, i feel deeply bothered that anyone whould feel this way. when i read that town and country actually printed that for mrs. obama to take as advice. its ridiclous, does the writer think that mrs. obama needs her advice on how to behave if she got to the white house. it really gets under my skin when all people can see is a color as aposed to who the person is. i am 29 and white, i grew up in a very white community. i was raised not to be racist by my mother, but my father told me never to bring a black man home. my father and stepmother believe that the world will come to an end with a black family in the white house. i feel quite the opposite. race never had anything to do with this election for me. it reminds me how different everyone sees things, or people. i am glad that you see a role model for the world in michelle obama. people young and old have problems with understanding the differences between us all. i for one have no problems with difference. i am sorry that still in 2008, it needs to be addressed and discussed. i also wanted to say i did enjoy this article and its great to see in newsweek. these things need to be out and brought to the forefront of discussions. i dont want my 2 year old son to ever think the way some do, and will do all i can to encourage him to be open to all races and opinions. anything is possible by anyone.

Thank you Allison Samuels, I don't understand why the media refuses to admit that there are many many African American women in this county who are sucessful and not walking in shame. I grew up in the rural in the south and in my hometown education, education was the big thing. After high school most of us went to some type of school/college. Where I live in the south now, (not Atlanta), we have a high number of educated African American women and men. We have a large number of African Americans who are married, loving their children, and taking care of their families. It is sad, in that if they don't showcase women like the ones depicted in CNN's special, then they will showcase only one whose accomplishments seem to be unreachable, such as Condoleezza Rice, nothing wrong with her. ( I mean on the one hand, they will depict an Afr. Am. women who seems to be on the far end of the success spectum, not an ordinary person who is successful in regular day to day life and there are many). There seems to be a spirit that wants to leave our women without hope and without dreams. There is a spirit out there that wants to continue to spread and to feed the pervailing stereotypes about African American women and men. America needs to see and know that African Americans don't have to be entertainers, rappers or politians to be success. I am a living witness that it is true and that your hopes and your dreams can come true.
But, to the contrary, there are many many African American women who are middle class women who may be married housewives, or trained in a profession, or college educated, and successful at it.

I am curious why Condoleezza Rice doesn't get more credit as a strong role model for young black girls? Is it because she's a Republican? Unmarried? Maybe her role doesn't get a lot of attention domestically, but I believe leaders the world over have a very posivite opinion of the potential of black women from her example.

Job well done Allison. I too see that this will be a challenge for white journalists to cover a woman like Michelle I was listening to "Broadminded" on XM radio this week. Kyra Phillips from CNN was on and was talking about the similarities of Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Michelle Obama. A comparison that is well-received. However, The Broads or perhaps it was Kyra, made a lame joke saying "We had Jackie-0, now I guess we have Blackie-O" Wow. I don't think it was racist. It was a lame attempt at a joke. Not realizing how many Black women would take offense to be calling Blackie. - BW - http://www.trailblazer-firstlady.blogspot.com/

If he is such an outstanding person why is it such a secret about his birth cert? All the people that think they really know what they voted for do they really know what they really voted for? A person that won't salute our FLAG and has never wore a military uniform should never be our Commander in Cheif reguardless of who they are Clinton shouldn't have and neither should Obama.

    • Posted By: Doc Howl @ 11/10/2008 3:59:00 PM

As far as I can tell, there is no constitutional requirement for military service as far as the president goes.

It is the ignorance of people like ???happy camper??? that plagues this country and not the people who choose to wear house shoes to the market. The USDA reports that while 18.5% of food stamp recipients are indeed black, 30.2% of food stamp recipients are WHITE. But then again, I suppose the first amendment protects the freedom of all speech, including ignorant, racist, hate speech. God bless you, Michelle Obama, for sacrificing your right to a private life and striving to make this country a better place. Perhaps your efforts will cancel out the toxic and deleterious effects of people like ???happy camper???.

    • Posted By: happy camper @ 11/04/2008 6:16:35 PM

I will be glad to tell you the meaning of ignorance. Allow me, in a local supermarket two days ago, i was in line with my children. A black girl and two other blacks were behind me. The black male said "girl, i sure hope you got everything you can get with that (WIC voucher). Did you get all the beans and peanut butter you "suppose' to?" she replied "I's got the cereal and milk. I don't even like cereal but I's got it anyways." Talk about stupid???????? OMG "FULL BLOODED IGNORANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as for me, I had shopped for items featured in the weekly circular!!!!!!!!!! Again, not american but full blooded stupid................

      • Posted By: Kelly M. @ 11/04/2008 7:46:11 PM

The fact that all you can do is provide anecdotal storytelling of handful of events in the face of nationwide statistical evidence that your assessment is flawed just further proves my point. However, the constitution does protect your ignorant, ill-bred, small-minded and dangerous ways of thinking. Best of luck in the election!

        • Posted By: happy camper @ 11/04/2008 9:21:13 PM

FIrst of all, and lastly, you are blind and stupid. You have no freaking idea what true NEGROES are. I see them every single day. They are like parasites, sucking everything dry. It is time to take down the birdfeeder. It's amazing, the more food you provide, the more the birds will come. As they keep coming, they destroy more and more and make a mess of everything. The only way to get rid of them is to take down the birdfeeder. Stop all of the free handouts and see what happens; more robberies, shootings, and hell raising!!!!!!!!!! They would starve to death before they would get up and do one day's honest work to earn an honest living.........just my opinion.

        • Posted By: WorkingClassSlob @ 11/05/2008 8:48:38 PM

I do think the anecdotal stories are stupid, but I feel obliged to point out a flaw in your arguement. More than 30% of the US population is white, and less than 18% of the US population is black, so according to your own data, blacks get a disproportionate amount of food stamps, and whites less than what you would call "their share". BTW, who the heck is the other 52%??

      • Posted By: Kboogie @ 11/04/2008 11:09:57 PM

I was in Myrtle Beach, SC not too long ago, and heard a similar conversation. BUT, the shoppers were white.

        What does this mean?

I really dislike the African American mentality in this country. First, Michell Obama had the audacity to say this is the first time she has ever been proud of this country, well if that is the way she feels, like my mother use to say, "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out". Now, we get African American writers saying this is selfish, but i am more interested about what Michell Obama can do for me as an African American. Lady, you are either African or American, make up your mind and decide. I am or Irish decent, but i do not walk around saying, I am an Irish American. This whole African American thing is total racism and should not be on our official documents. I have to select Caucasian, but Blacks get a royal title such as AFRICAN AMERICAN. Give me a break and give it up. Obama will ruin this country and white people will be taught a valuable lesson which i hope the learn.

    • Posted By: mrjungles @ 11/04/2008 5:37:09 PM

Well, I certainly hope you get taught a lesson anyways... Get a life Irish boy.

I have a life idiot and I have worked my ass off for over 25 years to obtain my life. I started with nothing, and now own a very successful company, which i built putting in over 16 hours a day of hard work. I could not get a SBA loan, because I was not AFRICAN AMERICAN even though my company was profitable. I am not a racist, i just speak the facts. This country is bad, because idiots like you can not stand up and help make it better, you just cry in your *** milk for handouts. OBAMA will destroy this country, mark my words....

        • Posted By: realist55 @ 11/09/2008 8:44:25 PM

You seem very self-satisfied and have apparently bought into the yth that Afircan-Americans haven't worked hard. It would do you well to study American history and learn about the rich enclaves and resorts of African-Americans that were burned to the ground by jealous whites. My own grandfather fought and served his country in WWII but was not able to use the GI bill to buy a house or go to college like the whites who has also served their country. Instead it was another 11 years of him scrimping and saving before he could buy a house, and even then he couldn't buy one in the best neighborhood he could afford like whites could. So his peers had 11 years of equity on him with which they used to send their kids to college and finance other ventures. He didn't complain though he continued to be passed up for promotions because he was black while every white who came in the door was promoted over him and made more money which they were able to use to help their families accomplish their dreams. My grandfather worked two and three times as hard as the whites he worked with to achieve half as much. And all this after being educated in a segregated schoolhouse for only 3 months of the schoolyear while whites went to school for 9 months and the school districts spent 3x as much money on every white student. If you would study these things you might discover why blacks aren't as far ahead as you think they should be and you might discover as well how your own "whiteness" has provided you and your family privileges, more so even then African-American citizens who can trace their heritage back for centuries, even though you were recent immigrants. After one generation you were just white but after one generation blacks, who were second class citizens in their own country, are still black.

          Just curious....

It's a shame that there are people who still think like you do in this day and age. I'm sure that you have no idea of what's an "african american mentality". If you haven't noticed, George Bush has already runied this country and it's directly because of idiots like you!!

      • Posted By: capecowl @ 11/04/2008 7:23:12 PM

African American Mentality! Screw the White Man, all white people are evil and ex slave owners, without regard to wheter or not it was true. Give me a handout and my welfare check and do not interrup my Opera Show.

I spent some time (for the first time in my life) campaigning for a presidential candidate this year. I did some door-to-door canvassing of a very affluent area near my home.

My experience -- the McCain supporters were arrogant, rude, hostile and had the most ignorant comments I've ever heard in my life. So ... let's talk about the "White Man Attitude" in this country. Because I am a woman, these men felt entitled to yell at me, follow me down the street screaming at me, and trying to intimidate me. I did not once encounter that attitude from any of the Asian American neighbors, including those from India or Pakistan, or from white women. In fact, on election day, a white man with a McCain bumper sticker yelled at me that I was "crazy" because I pointed out that he had parked in a no-parking zone. (Ironically, all of the people that were standing in line to vote received parking tickets if they were in no-parking zones.)

So, if there is an "African American" mentality in this country, I've found it much more hospitable than the "White Man" mentality I've encountered recently.

        • Posted By: Kboogie @ 11/04/2008 11:01:57 PM

Hahaha!! Let it all out. I'm surprised it took this long. Who knew it would take a man of African descent to become POTUS, for the true closet-racists to come out of hiding.

It's ok..we all knew you were in there. Good luck w/ that.

Which Jerry Springer have you been watching? From what I reacall, Jerry Springer had toothless trash people whom barely have any clothe on. Hmm. I am Asian and whenever I see Michelle Obama, I am stunned by her beauty and grace. She's somebody whom I definitely picture as First Lady. Inspirational, intelligent, well spoken, achieved, fair, kind hearted and confident. I voted for Barak but Michelle is the one who really helped her husband to earn my vote.
