A role model for "black" women? Michelle Obama is a role model for ALL women. I'm a 47 year old, white, college educated woman and I think that the Obamas are role models for every American! It's time to feel proud to be an American again. Change is in the air!

As usual White America doing what they always do when any one other that who they want in a position might be there. they go crazy. Just think Honey, a BLACK MAN in the white house. White people don't have a clue about us. What they see on the new is all they know. I don't know if O. J. killed his wife or not, if he did he should have been punished, but I do know this, if his wife was black, white america would have cared less.

Hint: When you start a thought with "as usual white america" ... it's a racist thought. Just trying to help!

You seem to forget that Obama would not be going to the White House without the white vote, so, obviously all whites are not as prejudiced against blacks as you seem to be against whites.
You only embarrass yourself withyour generalizations.

P.S. My white mother believed till the day she died that O.J. was innocent!

I agree with your comment with the execption of the part about OJ. his azz should have been buried under the jail.

          A Black woman!

    • Posted By: sjpersonal @ 11/03/2008 3:11:20 PM

What is the point of this type of comment? Just a reminder Obama would not be where he is in the polls if it were not for his non black supporters. Remember we only make up a very very small percentage of the voter age population.

The stereotypical White American also makes up a very small percentage of Americans and should just be ignored and by the way as you well know racism is part of all of our cultures. We need to collectively contribute to the evolution of this country past all of the racial hatred. Obama is NOT running as a Black President he is running for President of the United States. All of us will benefit from his presidency.

I agree with you icyeyes! Michelle Obama is no role model! I am going to vote for the traditional, conservative family values. I believe that government should protect the American citizens from enemies and allow Americans to pursue happiness and prosper. I believe the government should practice strict fiscal responsibility, while allowing Americans to keep more of the money they earn. I do not believe in abortion, I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. No, No, Michelle Obama is no role model for me or my children. McCain/Palin '08

    • Posted By: Kboogie @ 11/02/2008 12:58:25 AM

      "Traditional, conservative family values", huh?

John McCain cheated on his first wife, w/ Cindy (who admitted she knew he was married, and still living w/ his wife). Cindy was a drug-addicted criminal who defrauded her own charity. And, is a addicted to plastic surgery procedures.

Michelle is an accomplished, professional, career-woman, wife, and mother, who attributes her success to her own hard-working mother and father....not the privilege of a trust fund.

Yeah right..I bet you're teaching your kids to be just like Cindy, not that terrible Michelle.

      Get real!!!

What kind of DRUGS are you on?????? Don't bother to attempt to compare John McCain with some nappy headed anti-American muslim.....Osama is not fit to sit on the same platform with John McCain....he's not even near the caliber of man...McCain is the REAL DEAL...he's sacraficed and suffered for the love of this nation...what has Osama done??? Sit in a church where it was common practice to Damn the United States???? Affiliate with known terrorist and scam artist?? One is a man, one is a loser..McCain '08

I though we were comparing Cindy and Michelle....? No comeback for that one, huh? It's cool. We'll talk about Barack and John.

First of all, I'd rather have Barack's hair, than John's.....hand's down!!! LOL!!!!!!!!

And the "anti-American, muslim" thing.....c'mon kiddo.....are you serious? That myth was debunked almost a year ago.

I feel bad for Cindy and I don't judge her addiction or even her adultery. She is obviously emotionally fragile, and that makes me feel sympathetic towards her. But she is not a role model. Goodness no.

To all of the conservatives out there who think that Obama is a flaming liberal, I would like to remind you of what he did when he was elected President of the Harvard Law Review. The Law Review President gets to name ten individuals to write articles for the Review, and these ten people get to control the content of the publication. All of the minorities and the liberals thought they finally had it made, that Obama would appoint ten left wing editors. Instead, Obama appointed three conservatives, three liberals and four moderates. That year the Law Review was critically acclaimed as the best run and best written Harvard publication in decades.

So when he wins in November, conservatives don't have to freak out. Obama is a centrist and will appoint a balanced cabinet full of active people who will really get things done. Kind of like the way our multi-cultural society is supposed to be. And exactly what we need in this time of economic crisis.

I think Michelle would be a welcome change to the whitehouse. Not only is she an educated afro-american and good mother, but she is very supportive of her husband and his ideals. I think she will put America first and not be biased or predgudicial when it comes to helping solve some of the racial problems in this world. She is graceful and honest and will make a great first-lady. , and is well on her way to becoming one, if the polls are accurate.

I don't think this is the medium for a discussion on race. The article was simply about what Michelle Obama can bring to the table for not only black women but all women. I'm a 46 year-old advanced degreed African American woman & I think Michelle is absolutely awesome. I look forward to the lessons she has to offer. Should Barack make it to the White House I know she will definitely involve herself in a number of humanitarian causes. One thing I think we all will see is an increase in community organization which is definite plus for all communities. If you want to hate on blacks or black women, take your hate somewhere else. The message in the article was positive and the comments should be as well. For you haters, your words speak volumes about what is going on inside you.

As far as sitting in a church for 20 years listening to hate. How do you know he was listening. I went to church for God knows how long & I couldn't tell you a word of what was said. We all go to church for different reasons - networking, participation in various ministries, make friends, etc. Worship doesn't necessarily take place in the church, you can do that at home & still be strong in your faith.

    • Posted By: educatedokie @ 11/03/2008 2:43:41 PM

the title of the article..."....a real life rele model for black women". btw...I can think of many black women role models for all girls, to name two...Condoleza Rice and Robin Roberts. A rather weak point for your education level on the church issue...20 years and "God knows what was said".....come on. Michele will be a great role model, for black and white girls.

Tomorrow is election day and Palin and NO SHOW of Palin s Medical record...
The only candidate in recent history that I know not to publish it? Why?
It confirms what everyone suspect about her so-called pregnancy that coincided with her daughter withdrawal from school..........
Look her interview one month before her so-called delivery, in HIGH HEELS! And the 8-hours flight after fountain broke?
Palin is ALL LIES AND NO ROLE MODEL, no comparison with Michelle Obama!

In fact women like Michelle Obama are the stereotype many people like myself have come to think of when they think of Black Women. It is not true that crack addicts are the predominant type of black women one sees in the media. These days one sees from and hears a lot about women more like you -typically college (over)educated, white-collar black women, with middle/upper-middle class pretensions and almost always with a perpetual fixation on race. I think you need to get up to date with your perceptions of others perceptions of black women.

Apparently you are looking for some attention with your negative comments, so I will give you some. It sounds as though you have some anger toward Michelle Obama for no legitimate reason. You keep referring to Mrs. Obama as a "free-loader", please elaborate and follow up with some examples. Your blatant disrespectful references toward the Obama's is quite disturbing. However, I do understand that we are all entitled to our opinions and judgments. Your comments are quite offensive and reeks with ignorance and it appears that you are not interested in our country moving forward. Good luck with the hatred that you have bottled within yourself. Hopefully you will not develop any complications from possessing such cancerous language, divisive thoughts and closed minded rhetoric.

I have no animosity towards Michelle Obama because I am neither white nor black. It is just my observation of the obamas. It is DISGUSTING that someone who got so much from the society like a Princetin education and Harvard education, has only notheing but terrible thing to say about the scoiety during her student days and even now after society gave her a million-dollars a year job. Regarding her husband, if I summarize what he said during this entire campaign is tat he is a cross between Castro and Carter.

both of you need to read her princeton thesis. it's scary as hell.

        • Posted By: rogerhall @ 11/03/2008 12:05:37 PM

To suggest that there is any racism in her thesis is either uninformed or purposefully misleading. It is an academic work, and as such, does an excellent job exploring the subject. She does not advocate separation or isolation or anything. She simply measures and reports. If your complaint is about the personal feelings she shared, let???s take a moment and consider if we still agree with everything we said ourselves in our twenties. I know I don???t! Perhaps you haven???t grown any since then. I know I have!

Now, back to Mrs. Obama--have you also circulated the rumors about her thesis? Have you read it? Do you know what it says? Better yet, do you understand it? Or, are you as others in this post, who take one or two quotes out of context? The thesis is about responsibility. The questions posed surround the issue, will you take your education and do something for your community? Having been on a college campus at roughly the same time and later attending an Ivy League business school, I can understand the questions she posits--even though I am a white female. How many discussions I had with my friends during and after college about Affirmative Action and how, although intended to help minorities, it often made my friends feel as though they would be or were hired for the wrong reasons. They didn't know whether they were hired for their skills and knowledge or because they filled a quota. How awful to lose that confidence in your own abilities. So, now you say, at least they have jobs--I cannot tolerate such arrogance. In graduate school, the overwhelming majority of my classmates went on to jobs making six figures in places like the finance industry. How few of them pursued jobs to help the community or remembered their communities with their time and money! This is what Mrs. Obama's thesis is about. Read it with an open mind and with empathy. Maybe you can garner more than a couple of quotes out of context.

    Mr. Goodman,

It's people like you who have opened up the wounds of racism. Your comments below are very blatant and don't just deal with Mr. Barack Obama's campaign for president. Your issues run deeper to something that we as americans need to acknowledge - racism is still alive in this country. People like you have set the tone of this president ial race as well as the author of the article in "Town and Country" magazine. The world is shaped by people of all races and ethnicities but somehow White American or those of European/Anglosaxan descent keep forgetting that. You may be right about people's associations, but Sir, let me tell you this - there have been many good people that have come out of bad situations. And I'm sure you and Mr. Mccain as well as others have had some associations or been in places that you would not want to associate yourself with now. I watched a special on Mr. Mccain and his life and I was impressed by his courageousness however he has not been the only one to give his life for this country - which still does not make him the best candidate. You need to think about the real issues and where this country is headed and vote with sense and leave your heart out of it. It has been proven that the "heart" can be cold and calculated when a person doesn't have the right motives, therefore leading to a path of destruction.

Wow maybe I live under a rock. I think this whole race thing is so over blown. Lets take the white woman who is under educated, well does she fit in just because of the color of her skin, and are blacks judged solely on the color of their skin , The answer is yes . How many white people want to play in the black mans world well not many. However blacks do not fear some whites because we have to assimilate to make it in the business world. It is so important that you are not afraid of people because they are different. If you are then you will miss lessons in life .My dear friend who teaches cultural anthropology who happens to be white teaches about all different kinds of people . When you know people beyond the stereotypical box you are less likely to fear them. Michelle will do just fine as a first lady . So if you see her kids wearing braides its no big thing relax . All the women in my family have been strong , educated black women. There will be some black people that frighten you as there are some white people that frighten me. Its ok

You are so right! Maybe this will be an opportunity for all of us, black, white, brown, whatever, to get to really know each other and finally see that every race has a mix of circumstances, personalities, attitudes, religious beliefs etc. and that all races probably are more alike than they are different.

  • Posted By: onegemini77 @ 11/03/2008 2:05:08 PM

Are love of country and pride in country the same thing? NO. I love my country, but I have not been proud of my country for the last 8 years. I believe America is a GREAT country, one that strives to do right, but we are not a PERFECT country. We have made mistakes and errors in judgement.

You wish to attack Michelle because she said for the first time she is proud to be an American? Well, for many in this country we still seek to find pride in America once more, for many of us, it has been a shameful last 8 years. You do not have to agree, but you have to accept that not EVERYONE feels the same about the country and for many of us Barack Obama brings us hope and for the first time a feeling of pride in our president and our country. I realize for many it may be the opposite and you know what.....THAT IS OK!....in 4 years those people will have another opportunity to let their voice be heard.

To sdhdavis, I disagree with the views of someone who is racist and I always hope one day they will be enlightened, but we ALL have friends who are racist/bigoted/prone to stereotyping, to some degree. This is not a reason to end a friendship, if anything as a friend you can provide a balance or a voice of reason. I do not have to agree with my friends in order for them to be my friend. My roommate and neighbor, both friends, are long time Bush supporters, I am still friends with them. My grandfather was extremely racist towards asians, granted he was in the Pacific Theatre during WWII and thus maybe justifiably has some bias. However much I did not agree with his views, I did not love him any less.

sdhdavis how does Michelle's friends opinions tell you about how Michelle feels? Are you saying because I love my grandfather and he is family, that I hate all asian people? Hmmm I wonder why I dated and almost married a girl of Chinese heritage. I shouldn't want anything to do with asians, according to your theory sdhdavis. Oh and if Michelle was as racist as you say her friend is, then uhmmm would Barack being half-white of posed an issue to her?

sdhdavis, I do not agree with Michelle's friend, but as much as racism is frowned upon, there is no law that dictates how one must feel towards another. As long as a person's rights are not infrigned, then Michelle's friend can feel how she likes and she is not going to be the first lady, Michelle is. We can always hope to change how Michelle's friend perceives the world, but that takes time and the support of friends who love her to help bring about such change.

Not only is Michelle Obama a great role model for Afro-American women, Barack and Michelle's relationship is a good role model for all of us. It is undeniable that these two people really like each other. They are affectionate, supportive of each other, and work together as partners.

In a country filled with broken marriages and dysfunctional families, seeing them interact together really makes my day. They are a great couple.

I am a Black single mother. I'm also an attorney, and executive at a global company, and a Stanford alum. I have travelled extensively around the world, and earn approaching 200K per year, because I earn it. My point is that instead of choosing certain demographics to demaan, and imposing beliefs about people based upon ignorance (meaning lack of knowledge), why not take a moment to try and meet people who are different from ourselves and expand our understanding of our fellow Americans?

To the author, thank you for your article. I have, several times in recent months, remarked to my equally accomplished friends of various racial groups, that there has been no figure since Claire Huxtable (although fictional) who represents me. I could not be more grateful for the example that is Michelle Obama. As a mother, I'm ecstatic to know that my daughter has, on a global stage, an example of a well educated, Black Christian mother.

    I appreciate you, Michelle.

Funny how, despite Pennsylvania being such an important race, Newsweek took down their story on it yesterday after Obama???s comments about his plan to bankrupt the Coal Industry surfaced.

    • Posted By: Nins @ 11/03/2008 1:40:18 PM

NowforsomeMoronTruth, the story about Palin getting pranked by a fake Sarkozy was also taken down, so that is one anti-McCain story removed. Should I say that Newsweek is now pro-McCain because of that? Of course not. That would be following your logic, something I would never do. Newsweek posts lots of stories for only one day. They try to vary the website to attract daily online readers.

As for Obama stating that he wants to destroy the coal industry. Obama is in favor of clean coal, which is GOOD for the American coal industry and good for the environment.. I guess you missed al those coal industry ads in which they talk about the importance of clean coal?

You will have to come up with some believable lies. Or not. At this point it doesn't matter. McCain has already lost.

    • Posted By: rogerhall @ 11/03/2008 12:58:56 PM

I hope we never dig another dirty rock out of the ground, but Obama wants to work on clean coal, and there is *one* reason he is right and I am wrong.

      China.

It's just the opposite of bankrupting the coal industry.

      But seriously, thanks for actually typing something new (even if it is bonkers still)! :}

Obama has 63 Nobel Laureates working on his policy team. They are developing a plan to push America back to the top. Who is responsible for McCain's planning? Americans would be shocked to find that Douglas Holtz-Eakin is the sole person responsible for planning McCain's policy for America's future. Holtz-Eakin is also McCain's economic advisor, filling two full time positions on McCain's team. How can one single man (an economist) be responsible for developing a viable technology plan for our future?

Obama has an enormous pool of the most intelligent, talented men and women in America working for him. Soon, they will be working for us: for you and for me and for America.

And let's not forget that the McCain campaign spent more on Palin's makeup artist than it did on it's foreign policy advisor. When you pay your makeup artist DOUBLE what you pay your foreign policy advisor, it is time to start examining your priorities.

You look just fine without makeup, John. And Sarah is young enough not to need any. So cut the crap, and start paying some good ECONOMIC ADVISORS so you can have a fiscal plan to present to America. We're in the middle of a huge global financial meltdown, and you are worried about hair and makeup? PLEASE start worrying about the middle class, John. Please.
