I am in my 50's and I have ALWAYS been proud of America and of being an American. That does not mean that I have always been proud of the way things are handled by the government, but who is? I have to agree with an earlier post by summer4077 when she said that race should not be a diaquallifying factor for presidential candidacy. Racism, on the other hand, should be. The Obamas belonged to an extremely racist, anti-American congregation for over 20 years, separating themselves from it only when their association threatened to have a negative effect on the campaign. That is not "role model" material. If you want a role model for American women, look at Condoleezza Rice.
As far as the Obamas are concerned, I am glad that they can finally be proud to be Americans and their "faith in America" has been "vindicated". It's just sad that it is taking a potential trip to the White House to bring this about.

You don't have to be white to be a racist....as far as black women, we white people don't look down on you for working and raising your kids. That is what is expected. The "people" (not only black) we look down on are the ones who do not work for what they have nor raise their children for a better life. The American Dream is not to sit and stew about the past, but to move forward into prosperity. EVERYONE has the same opportunity.

Barack Obama and his spouse has opened the wounds of racism. We become what we are around. Our values, attitude and beliefs are formed by the people we associate with. We take on the drives and goals of those who teach us and those who aspire to specific aims that we are allied with.

While McCain may not be your number one choice for President he will and has defended America. He is offering his life for America and has proven he would/will die for America. None of Osama???s associates would do that and they trained Obama.

Obama's tax and spending plans alone would be bad enough, but add Reid and Pelosi to the mix, with the three of them controlling both houses of Congress and the executive branch without any effective restraint, and you have something that should causes concern even among moderate Democrats.

Obama's ill-conceived programs will require him to tax, and his health care plan alone is a substantial hidden tax on all business, large an small. In reality, it does not really matter who he taxes, those taxes are going to be passed through the economy. He has to tax, because it is they only way he can pay for his massive social engineering experiments. Any first year economics student knows that taxation is a tool used to contract an economy experiencing inflation, because it reduces demand by reducing the amount of money individuals and businesses have to spend. It is contractionary, which is exactly what you do not want to do when the problem is that the economy is contracting already into recession. Like Hoover and FDR, Obama's plans will only make it worse for longer.

Why do we continue to harp on the color of a person's skin? I don't care if the Obama's, the McCains or anyone else running for public office is white, black or pink with purple polka dots!! Good grief people - let's focus on what's important - health care; education; the total breakdown in the financial system; BILLIONS of dollars a day in a sand pit that has all the earmarks of another Vietnam - make your decision based on the education and values of your candidates not the color of their skin!!

To be fair to HBO (not that they need fairness, but) the only "good people" on the show "True Blood" are the vampire and the lycan. Pretty much all the humans are boneheads. But that ain't far from the truth, is it?

To be fair to the truth, Michelle Obama will be a great *American* role model. I appreciate that the author feels a special connection, but I love her too, and don't feel like I have to give her up just because we have different shades of skin!

Of course, I'm so white I'm pasty. I've never had to second guess if I was welcome at the big table. If you fail to understand a "darker" perspective", you are neither "right" nor "wrong"; you just don't empathize. But to suggest that there is no reason for such perspective is simply a matter of ignorance to the path of your neighbor.

I have to say, Palin sounds like a nice, conciliatory person, but she also sounds as dumb as a rock. It is incomprehensible that she didn't realize that it wasn't Sarkozy, especially when he referred to "Nailin' Palin" and the fact that his wife was good in bed.

But worse than her failure to recognize the prank is the fact that when Sarkozy referred to the Prime Minister of Canada using the name of a rock star, Palin didn't even get it -- apparently she does not even know the name of Canada's Prime Minister -- despite the fact that you can see Canada from Alaska. (Ahem.)

Poor Sarah. She's in this way over her head.
