"As the potential First Lady, she would have the world's attention. And that means that for the first time people will have a chance to get up close and personal with the type of African-American woman they so rarely see." I do believe that Condi Rice has already done that in a very, very effective way. Wish she had chosen to run!

I'm a black woman and I appreciated the CNN special on being black in America. The special included stories of financially successful black women, and women who faced struggles other than finding a husband, not focusing on black women who were infected with HIV or women who are/were crack addicts. I think news media often follow human nature by paying more attention to challenges rather than successes, since problems require more attention so we can try to correct them. The fact that black women are disproportionately infected with HIV is worthy of attention. Crack addicts and women infected with HIV are black women too, human beings too, not necessarily ugly representatives of black women. They can certainly still be examples of successful black women who overcome life struggles. I think the CNN special was timely, showing that inequality in areas such as healthcare, education and income still exist in America between black Americans and others. It's timely because a lot of people are ready to say that all is equal and fair in America now that a black man will possibly be our next president. I agree that the diversity of black Americans and black women (their lives, opinions, and even physical likenesses) often seems underrepresented in articles, advertisements in some women's magazines I read and it's probably similar in other media. I also agree that it has been difficult as a black American to find my own identity because black Americans are so dogged by this prepackaged picture of who they are, what it is to be black in America.

To "Thevgil" who are you and who are us???

  • Posted By: crwcpa @ 11/02/2008 2:18:58 PM

Why be so race-specific? Michele Obama is a fantastic role model for women and men. The longer that the news media practices literary segregation, the longer our country's racial problems will continue.

    • Posted By: dolores1963 @ 11/02/2008 6:12:22 PM

Yes, Michele wil be a great role model for all woman and girls but as a woman of color I understand why this article is race specific....As pointed out in the begining of the article all you read about are single mom on welfare with no education. There are lots of us that have good jobs, raised our kids right, own our home and have an education, but rarely is that reported. I am a single mom but that was due to divorce, but the mainstream will automaticlly assume that I had my children out of wedlock because I reverted happen to be a woman of color & my last name is not the same as my children.

Obama's Links To Radicals Starting To Surface!! www.newsmax.com/timmer

Obama-Farrakhan Ties Are Close, Ex-Farrakhan Aide Says

A former top deputy to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan tells Newsmax that Barack Obama???s ties to the black nationalist movement in Chicago run deep, and that for many years the two men have had ???an open line between them??? to discuss policy and strategy, either directly or through intermediaries.

???Remember that for years, if you were a politician in Chicago, you had to have some type of relationship with Louis Farrakhan. You had to. If you didn???t, you would be ostracized out of black Chicago,??? said Dr. Vibert White Jr., who spent most of his adult life as a member and ultimately top officer of the Nation of Islam.
White broke with the group in 1995 and is now a professor of African-American history at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
White said Obama was ???part of the Chicago scene??? where Farrakhan, Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. and radicals would go to each other???s events and support each other???s causes.
???Even though Chicago is the third-largest city in the country, within the black community, the political and militant nationalist community is very small. So it wouldn???t be uncommon for [Obama and Farrakhan] to show up at events together, or at least be there and communicate with each other,??? White told Newsmax.
The Anti-Defamation League has denounced Farrakhan and his Nation of Islam as a ???hate group.???
Farrakhan has called Jews ???bloodsuckers,??? ???satanic??? and accused them of running the slave trade. He has labeled gays as ???degenerates.??? In a 2006 speech, the ADL again condemned Farrakhan when he said: ???These false Jews promote the filth of Hollywood that is seeding the American people and the people of the world and bringing you down in moral strength. ??? It's the wicked Jews the false Jews that are promoting lesbianism, homosexuality. It's wicked Jews, false Jews that make it a crime for you to preach the word of God, then they call you homophobic!"

I think alot of healing and growth will come about with the election of Obama, and it will happen without people being aware of subtle shifts in attitudes about race. The Obamas are remarkable, each of them, for the journeys that have brought them to the steps of the White House. I am a white women. I am amazed that this is occurring in my lifetime. I am voting for Obama because of his positions and his character, but I am also very proud of my country at this moment. I appreciate what Ms. Samuals is saying about the hopes of black women that Michelle will change perceptions about African-American women. I think that the Obama family will be role models for many of all colors in this country.

Sarah palin when asked about becoming vp responded

"As for that VP talk all the time, I tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me, 'what is it exactly that the VP does every day......"

After she had been the nominee for around 2 months she was asked again and this time said

[T]hey???re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom.

WRONG THE VP IS THERE TO STEP IN IF SOMTHING HAPPENS TO THE PRESIDENT ONLY THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH POLICY AND THEY DONT RUN THE SENATE!!
If she doenst know what the vice pres or presidant does why would we give her the job

Mccain has around a 40 percent chance because of his age in not being able to

complete his term picking palin was about as smart as picking any other mrs Alaska contestant.

Its not just that we disagree with her answers in alot of cases she doesnt understand basic questions
like what is the bush doctrine, or what do you read.
    These are not gotcha questions!!!
One of advisors recently said not only was she unqualified but said mccain picked her after 1 interview of about a hour
and that even at mcdonalds you get 3 interviews.
Members of her own campaign called her a diva and a whack job.
They would know better then anyone else right now.

So mccain gambled and he lost big. He ended up with a girl that cant answer questions that most of the people reading this can answer.
at the same time mccain could never read this blog because he cant use a computer at all.
I mean his wife has 100 million dollars get him classes or something.

Am i crazy or do we want a computer literate president and a vp who can answer a least basic questions.
If you read the rest of the articles on this site you would think the world is about to end
So if thats the case these are the last 2 people you want running anything.
    let send them packing.

    ELECT OBAMA BIDEN NOW

Good on you. Good on all of us.

You end every post with "40 year republican", but you bash the hell out of the party and are going to vote Democrat. Good grief, you remind me of a hateful spouse that hates their mate to the degree that they can't leave and they can' t shut up about it.

We all know by know you can't stand the republican party! Enough already! Show both parties some respect and become a democrat! I promise you'll make both parties better by doing so!

Oh, Oh . Just read on the internet that Barack Obama has a plan to reinstitute the Draft so that the young people will have the opportunity to serve a higher cause than themselves. Hmm. With Joe Biden's comments about being tested, the young followers of Barack Obama may get the opportunity to serve their Messiah and wear some camouflage and army boots for a cause greater than themselves. Such Poetic Justice!

    TO THE REV. WRIGHT COMMENTATORS:

For those who choose to make comments about Rev. Wright, please take a moment to educate yourselves. It is so abundantly clear, from so many of the comments that I've heard about Rev. Wright, and his preachings, that you do not understand Black Liberation Theology. Its basic principles are not threatening. First, it posits that as Christians, the Lord will endow us (irrespective of racial identity) with all that we need to fulfill our potential because we (as Christians, not as Black people) are all Jesus' blessed children. How is this scary? Don't we all want to fulfill our potential?

Second, Black Liberation Theology is based upon the principle that Black people have a wonderful, rich history of strength, intellect and ability. Therefore, we need not look outside of ourselves and our communities to uplift ourselves. This is a theory of hard work and self actualization. Again, what's scary about that? It's the same thing that people in every ethnic community have done throughout American history. This theory of uplifting one another has been evidenced in the Jewish community, among immigrants from the Irish and Italian, to Latinos across the country.

The reason, I surmise, that so many people find Rev. Wright and Black Liberation Theology to be scary is they have not done the simple research to understand that about which they speak. Hence, they are unfortunately led astray by those who seek to divide us as Americans. Fear what we don't understand. That's the same, old, tired thinking that led to two terms of a Bush administration.

In my humble opinion, I think that one of the beauties of our America is not that we all pretend that we are the same, so as to avoid the difficult discussions about our differences. Instead, as I see it, our beauty is that we each have brilliant differences to share. Collectively, that is a strength, not a fault.

    It's time for a change.

    • Posted By: mcdeere72 @ 11/02/2008 2:11:03 PM

So when he says God #@$&** America thats ok by you and seen as normal for a minister because of the theology? Where I come from thats a cuss word and cussing is the effort of the uneducated mind trying to express itself. If this isn't a big deal why has Obama step away from Rev. Wright? Trying to mold himself to get more votes from people. Obama said that he will slow defensive technology development. Sounds like a great plan for us to lag behind the world and become weak in our own defense....

      • Posted By: melandmike @ 11/02/2008 2:34:29 PM

You cannot judge Reverand Wright by a couple of two minute sound bites. If you want to see the entire sermon he gave that day, see it on youtube at

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvMbeVQj6Lw

        • Posted By: Vypurr @ 11/02/2008 4:42:37 PM

Those "two minute sound bites" were available for sale on DVD at Obama's church. Wright and the church wanted the world to know about his extreme radical views, or they wouldn't be available to the public.

And by the way, it's not only Wright's wild accusations about the KKK controlling the government and his extreme racist attitude that got everyone's attention, it is his blatant cynicism... and that's what Obama shares and has in common with Wright.

Why else would Obama be mentored by Wright and stay for twenty years in his extreme radical church?

    • Posted By: Vypurr @ 11/02/2008 4:30:27 PM

The Reverend Wright is an enraged man that lives in the past. Does he actually think his rants about the KKK running our government and that the government created the AIDS virus to kill all black people is going to help diminish racism? American has indeed come a long way regarding race. The evidence? Obama has been elected the democratic nominee for president of the United States!

The Reverend Wright won't recognize this though because like Louis Farrakhan, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, he doesn't want a solution. He wants to be right.

IF YOU CAN NOT SEE THAT, WE ARE ALL IN THIS SHIP TOGETHER, WELL THEN, THERE MAY BE NO HOPE FOR YOU...

... and may ALL of your Daughters, bring home "HALFRICAN-AMERICAN BABIES" (thanks RUSH) and your family's new make-up TO REFLECT THE VAST AND MULTIPLISTIC TAPESTRY, that is AMERICA ...

WE DO NEED RACIAL DECONSTRUCTIONISM IN ORDER TO GENETICALLY ELIMINATE THESE RACIST MORONS...

Looks like she is going to teach us about this:

    Kelo v. City of New London, 545 U.S. 469 (2005),

What does redistributive mean. Well, remember that it was the liberal Left-Wing Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court that brought us this little jewel, holding that the government could take your real property, like your home, not for public use like a road or school, but to give to another private individual, such as a political contributor or other party hack or interest group.
Kelo v. City of New London, 545 U.S. 469 (2005), was a case decided by the Supreme Court of the United States involving the use of eminent domain to transfer land from one private owner to another to further economic development. The case arose from the condemnation by New London, Connecticut, of privately owned real property so that it could be used as part of a comprehensive redevelopment plan. The Court held in a 5-4 decision that the general benefits a community enjoyed from economic growth qualified such redevelopment plans as a permissible "public use" under the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment. Justice John Paul Stevens wrote the majority opinion; he was joined by Justices Anthony Kennedy, David Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer
The decision was widely criticized by American politicians and the general public. Many members of the general public viewed the outcome as a gross violation of property rights and as a misinterpretation of the Fifth Amendment, the consequence of which would be to benefit large corporations at the expense of individual homeowners and local communities. Some in the legal profession construe the public's outrage as being directed not at the interpretation of legal principles involved in the case, but at the broad moral principles of the general outcome.

Why are we zeroing in on black and white? Michelle Obama has never given me the impression that she will threaten in any way of anyone's life. What difference does it make? I'm listening to McCain right now, he just disheartens me, and by the way where is his adopted daughter? I can't wait till he SHUTS THE HELL UP. " MY FRIENDS". SHUT UP! Give it a rest, go take a nap. Please for the sake of my poor American ears.

"But ultimately what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the healthcare reform that is needed to help shore up our economy." --Sarah Palin, explaining the $700 billion government bailout of Wall Street to Karie Couric, CBS News interview, Sept. 24, 2008

"Oil and coal? Of course, it's a fungible commodity and they don't flag, you know, the molecules, where it's going and where it's not. But in the sense of the Congress today, they know that there are very, very hungry domestic markets that need that oil first. So, I believe that what Congress is going to do, also, is not to allow the export bans to such a degree that it's Americans that get stuck to holding the bag without the energy source that is produced here, pumped here. It's got to flow into our domestic markets first." --Sarah Palin, billed by John McCain as the nation's foremost expert on energy, clumsily answering a question while speaking off the cuff at a town hall meeting, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Sept. 17, 2008

"We realize that more and more Americans are starting to see the light there and understand the contrast. And we talk a lot about, OK, we???re confident that we???re going to win on Tuesday, so from there, the first 100 days, how are we going to kick in the plan that will get this economy back on the right track and really shore up the strategies that we need over in Iraq and Iran to win these wars?" --Sarah Palin, suggesting we are at war with Iran, FOX News interview, Nov. 1, 2008
