When saying "Europe is thrilled by.. the end of George Bush", one must consider that GW was never really the leader of the US. He was a puppet president controlled by Cheney and the Neocons of the New GOP (aka The Rovians). I feel bad for GW but hope the best for him as he retires to his ranch - he's sure to go down in history as leader of the worst administration this country has ever seen.

If I were an American and heard that all my enemies favoured one candidate over another; I would be stupid to vote for that candidate wouldnt I?

Which of these countries referred to in the article comprise "our enemies"?

Do you consider everyone outside our borders to be "our enemies"?

I thought most of them were our allies, trading partners, neighbors, and origins of the ancestors of millions of Americans.

If this is more xenophobia and fear of outsiders, we don't need it.

ABC Reports that in a conservative radio interview that aired in Washington, D.C. Friday morning, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin said her First Amendment rights are threatened by reporters suggesting she is engaging in a negative campaigning against Barack Obama.

Palin told WMAL-AM that for reporters or columnists to suggest that she is going negative constitutes an attack on her free speech rights under the Constitution, saying -If the media convince enough voters that this is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations, then I don't know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media.-

If I hadnt heard her butcher the Constitution numerous times already, I might not have believed it!

"Europe is thrilled by the prospect that whatever happens this week it will mean the end of George W. Bush."

The rest of us are thrilled, too.

I came home to the USA at the age of 12, after 3 years in an (American Army run) integrated grammar school. I felt like an "real" American and loved my country without question or afterthought, but from that time forward I have been dismayed and confused by how so many of my countrymen listened to, followed and even elected such misguided, shortsighted leaders.

Having lived abroad as a child (indirectly on the orders of the then Commander in Chief) in Japan and Europe, I knew and know that common Japanese people are people. Period. German people and Swiss and Austrian and Italian and French and Romanian and Black American people are people. Period. I knew that because I'd seen them, met them, lived together with some of them and gone to school with others. I had a clear unquestioned certainty about this already as a child, and I still have that certainty as an adult.

America is special - exceptional - and has a lot to offer, to teach--by example--to other countries. However, it's foreign policies are all too often so shortsighted or misguided that one wonders if those in charge of making and implementing America's foreign policy even really have as their goal to promote the long term interests of the country. The foreign "friends" America has sometimes supported, or even helped to power, have all too often abused (and robbed) their own people such that now 5 or 10 or 40 years later those abused, tortured and oppressed peoples hate America and sometimes have even accepted new governments even worse than the ones America supported which are aggressively anti-American--at least on that one point they have the full support of their people.

As an American, I deeply hope that Obama's having to some extent grown up abroad or in culturally mixed surroundings will have had some positive lasting effect on him. I deeply hope that if he is elected, his foreign policies and their implementation will be build on pursuing the longterm best interests of America--which I think will not conflict with the long term interests of the various foreign peoples they affect. Respect, real respect, for other nations and their peoples is probably what so many abroad are hoping for from Obama. That respect is not dangerous for the USA; it is rather a prerequisite for long security, peace and prosperity. And it's not too much for all those foreigners to ask for either!

Obama is indeed of world stature. THAT's why he inspired over 100,000 people in his Germany speech. The McCain campaign were envious and it showed.

    • Posted By: love234america @ 11/01/2008 6:19:13 PM

Obama did not inspired 100,000 in Berlin; most were there because Obama hired the most famous band in Germany to entertain this crowd. The mass of people got in free to a concert which should have cost them a bundle.

If they came for the concert, what do you suppose kept them for the speech. Seems they would have just gone home and left Obama talking to himself. And of course the cheering and enthusiasm was all electronically added.

Its not a matter of being against war. Other countries are made up of people, just like your country. Its like being against fighting. Ok, but if you telegraph that you are a wimp, you will always end up surrounded by bullies. Saying that all people want peace and love ignorant. You can't stereotype people that way. There is no "The People' there is only many individual people and they define their wants and desires differently. When President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Israel a permanent threat to the Middle East that will soon be liberated, I am sure in his mind he was thinking about peace for his people.

Dou you really think your next leader should be one who changes his thinking and what he says based on the whims of what he hears? His definition of wealth has gone from $300,00 to $250,000, to $200,000, and now is at $150,000. Yet he also voted to increase taxes on thos making more than $42,000. Sounds like he has problems making up his mind...

May be you don't live or work in USA. But if you od, and If you haven't noticed, wages used to have social security and medicare tax imposed on $80,000 and then changed to $85,000 under the Bush administration. This year it has been raised to $106,800, and Bush is still the president. REMEMBER THIS FACT before you start blaming Obama.

What is most troubling in todays political climate is the promotion of hatred as a philosophy. The emergence of an ultraconservative dogma relies increasingly on the encouragement of mass hostility aimed at one group in particular - Americans with progressive political views. Liberals are spoken of with the kind of dripping contempt and virulent hostility that used to be associated with racism and sectarian religious strife. Liberals are viewed not as fellow Americans citizens concerned with the future of their country, but as ideological enemies that need to be destroyed - and eaten if possible. This view is fundamentally anti-American.

This right-wing sect manifests a complete lack of empathy toward other Americans whom it defines as its ideological enemies. Its core beliefs are absolutely impervious to reason and are unleashing ugly and violent impulses. What makes their zeal so dangerous for our country is their willingness to do serious damage to our precious American Democracy in their quest for absolute power.

SOUND FAMILIAR? IT DOES TO ME AND I AM SICK OF IT. IF YOU ARE TOO, VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN ???08

How can somebody vote "Present" during senate sessions, and them claim that his voice has been heard in Washington? "You see what you want to see, and you hear what you want to hear".

    • Posted By: davtx @ 11/01/2008 6:58:15 PM

You vote present, if you heard both sides of the arguments, and you are not satisfied with either side of it, and neither side is willing to make changes that is enough for your conscience to vote YES or NO on it.

Choose the president based on his qualifications. The world prefers Obama based on an image created which does not reflect reality. He is not going to put them first, the US will still be his main concern. Obama necessarily will disappoint them and his honey moon with the world will be over a few months after his is president. BUT we will be stuck with this man for for years! He has no experience as a leader or executive. We have no reason to believe he has developed the skill to lead the several hundred government agencies and departments. He will have a smarter BUSH. Bush's only experience came as governor of Texas the weakest governor in the union. (the governor of Texas basically cuts ribbons)

I wholeheartedly agree that the United States is in need of a change in leadership. The economic failures are a direct result of failed leadership in our financial institutions, as well as a lack of oversight by our government. Sadly, Obama's ideas don't coincide with reality. There's no way he can supposedly cut taxes while instituting his "redistribution" programs. And, his list of associations leave real doubt as to his sense of judgement. Ultimately, he has no real leadership experience on a large enough scale to be my next president. John McCain has been tested under fire and has proven to be a man of integrity and honor. Obama has shown himself to be a media darling, and summarily, an empty suit.

    • Posted By: Holy Roiler @ 11/01/2008 6:47:46 PM

By his actions, John McCain has shown himself to be a fraud, having no honor. By his actions, he has brought disgrace upon himself. By his actions, he has dishonored those who have fought and paid the ultimate price to safeguard our freedom.

If the race were indeed about character, McCain would loose too.
He's got his turbid past and can't hide it. In personal lfe, and in politics too.
