What to Watch For

This is something that people SHOULD watch for - ESPECIALLY poll workers - 80% of the votes in this country are now tabulated by a company whose CEO was a major contributor to Republican campaigns in 2000 and 2004, many of them electronically. These voting machines are in databases so unsecured that I personally could easily hack into them within a few hours myself. Some of the more advanced ways to hack these machines are virtually untraceable.

REPORT ELECTION IRREGULARITIES of all kinds. Most ESPECIALLY report any irregularities you see around Premier Election Systems machines - formerly Diebold Election Systems. It chills me to the bone to think that a single company is so completely responsible for our vote-tally. PARTICIPATE IN EXIT POLLS. If the eventual winner is so far away from exit polls as to be statistically highly improbable, there will be sufficient evidence of electoral fraud to demand a fuller investigation into the matter. Whatever you do, no matter what side you're voting for - MAKE YOUR VOICE KNOWN.

Mr. Silver - the end results may go exactly as you've predicted, but your timing may be off by a few hours - if the turnout is as heavy as predicted, people will still be on line in most states when the polls close, so the results will be delayed.

Newsweek! Great analysis - which I found to be balanced & well though out!

Except for the glaring error regarding California's Prop 8.

boy viking1055, you are a little over zealous arent you? its conservatives like you that give conservatives and christians a bad name. you are the type that make people afraid to sound their opinions for fear they will come off sounding like you. you better take a chill pill and settle down. its people like you that should be shipped off and make your own little world. and i bet it would not be any better. you would still find things to bitch about even with your own kind. i cant wait for tomorrow when obama becomes our next president and your kind go back into hiding. have a nice trip!!!!

Editor needed: "crestfallen conservatives" might not bother heading to the polls to vote FOR prop 8 if Obama looks like he's going to win a landslide victory. A vote FOR prop 8 amends the constitution of California to define marriage as a man and a woman. A vote AGAINST prop 8 is a vote for same-sex marriage.

    Dear Viking1055,
I usually dont leave comments on articles but your hateful/old world/outdated/uneducated spew on your views on proposition 8 left me no choice. It is repressed closeminded people like you that are the detriment to our country and everything we stand for. Liberty and freedom is for every citizen in this country not a select few. Whether it be freedom from religious/racial/sexually oriented persecution. It is people like you that create a negative image of all americans. You should have been a blowjob.

To Concerned Canadian - I doubt you're Canadian. And, you are spouting lies!

Beware of voting machines that flip votes. Recheck your choices carefully before punching the enter button. This is not a random machine flaw. It takes software to do this. Of course if it is programmed to flip when you enter your vote--------there is nothing you can do.

    THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE SHOULD GO!
The American people should decide a national federal vote-----------------NOT THE STATES.

California": "crestfallen conservatives might not bother heading for the polls to vote against Prop 8." Actually, conservatives are expected to vote FOR Prop 8, since a "yes" vote is to eliminate the current right of same-sex couples to marry.

Are you kidding? Polls have McCain and Obama in a dead heat in Arizona, McCain's own state, and that's not a state to watch?

    • Posted By: Cazador1972 @ 11/03/2008 3:29:52 PM

Yeah, McCain is hurting there too! His campaign didn't even see that one coming. Unbelievable.

If Maricopa County's racist sherriff and country atorney were not running for re-election plus our anti gay (Morman) Prop. 102, Mccain would lose AZ in a landslide.

What to watch for? Watch the HBO On Demand Documentary "Hacking Democracy"
We can't beat a rigged game unless there anre just too many votes to cover. Vote. Take however long it takes and demand a paper ballot. Demand a permanent audit trail.
    Vote.

Nate, the polls in Indiana close at 6 PM local time. While most of the state is on ET, there are parts of the state (near Evansville and Chicago) with large populations and very high African-American precincts that will not close until 6 Central, or 7 ET. I doubt the state will be releasing vote counts prior to these pricincts closing.

    ***CORRECTION REGARDING CALIFORNIA'S PROP 8***

PROP 8 ELIMINATES THE RIGHTS OF SAME SEX COUPLES TO MARRY. IT DOESN'T SEEK TO PROTECT THE RIGHT OF SAME SEX COUPLES TO MARRY.

VOTE NO ON PROP 8! IT'S UNFAIR AND WRONG!

  • Posted By: kugelschreiber @ 11/03/2008 3:43:25 PM

Newsweek and Nate: please fix the paragraph on Prop. 8. You state that is does the opposite of what it is.

    • Posted By: TheVigil @ 11/03/2008 3:54:20 PM

Yeah, should have been "against gay marriage" or "for Prop 8".

No on Prop 8, by the way. (I am Californian.)
