Reply to sonyago8: Unfortunately, hardcore Christians believe that contraception is just abortion in another form. The only form of contraception they condone is celibacy, that's why they so stubbornly insist upon abstinence only programs - which don't work, of course, because in order for children/teenagers to remain abstinent, they need to know exactly what to abstain from - which means to tell them exactly where babies come from and how they are conceived. A vicious circle.

You are SOOOO mistaken, but I think you KNOW that you are telling falsehoods. They just support your position better, that's all. "Hardcore Christians" don't have a problem with birth control, and abstinence programs DO tell kids where babies come from. The only Christian denomination that has a problem with birth control are the Catholics, and being one, I can assure you that the majority of Catholics don't really have a problem with birth control, either. And guess what - we actually DO teach our kids about sex and abstinence in their confirmation classes. My daughter said some of the STD pics were stomach-turning, yes, they learn about AIDS, Syphillis, etc. The only ignorant people around are people like you that spread this crap.

OH my word! This article is ridiculous! Abortion is murder. Plain and simple. A Chrisitan who casts a vote for a candidate who supports abortion will have to stand before God and give an account for the murder of unborn children. Chrisitians! Stand up for what is right! Vote according to the word of God! You are supposed to be salt and light in the earth, not go along with what the media or articles like this say is okay to do.

    To unityfirst23....
Life is a gift from God. There is only 1 God, period. Regarding your question " what's the difference" between abortion & the death penalty, it is this: Abortion kills an innocent child who has not been given a chance . The death penalty is a consequence of a choice made by a person who had a " choice " of to kill or not to kill. Even a murderer can be forgiven of murder, but there is still the issue of consequence.

    • Posted By: aposstum @ 11/04/2008 10:00:24 AM

this is so true papi, I read of a nazi war criminal who before his death confessed to a catholic pfirest and was forgiven for killing around 400,000? jews. It just seems you can be forgiven for any sin except thos committed against your god. By your belief, how many nazis are in heaven right now?

    • Posted By: unityfirst23 @ 11/04/2008 9:59:41 AM

there may be one god but not everyone worships that one god the same. everyone is entitled to their opinion even if you don't agree. as far as the death penalty it is the same i understand the child may be innocent and can not answer for itself, but how many innocent men or women have been put to death? furthermore i DON'T AGREE WITH IT!!!!!!! It's the womans choice. its her body not mine not yours. its a no win situation. we can argue about this forever and nothing will ever come out of it. if its illegal women will always have a way to find that person that will do it for her or she'll find a way to do it herself. Where are the fathers??? why don't men speak up???? when its all said and done with this is about how you percieve life. some lawmakers say that life begins with the first breath. So its all on what you believe. Personally I gave birth to my first child when i was 17 and had 2 more to follow. there are circumstances to which some women has had an abortion, not just because they didn't want the child.

How do we know if governor Palin or her daughter ever had an abortion, they well may have with a previous pregnancy? It is such a private painful matter, At 21 I had an abortion after already having a child at 19, personally I do regret my decision and consider myself prolife, so while I would discourage anyone from having an abortion, I am in no plce to judge them. I am just trying to fiigure out how the Palin's became a poster child for anti abortion groups and wonder if they would be celebrating Bristol' if her name was Shameka instead.

It is very ignorant to think that you can trust someone to care about those of us that are alive, if they condone the murder of the helpless unborn. God is not mocked. Every society in history has come to ruins when there morals have become this corrupt and they forget God their creator. I believe that today may be the day that we lose our freedom. Obama is definetly not to be trusted.

  • Posted By: ck3313 @ 11/04/2008 9:32:45 AM

Like Obama said, "I don't think anyone is pro-abortion."

You may be pro-life and against abortion and that is your CHOICE. I am not pro-abortion, I am pro-choice. Two years ago, I had to make that choice. I had an abortion and I do not regret my decision in the least bit. And to be completely honest, I did not cry once...not once. Obviously not a pleasant experience, I would have no qualms doing it again if placed in a similar situation. I needed to have the choice to do with my body, what I choose, not have you, Christian conservatives (the majority of you men, who will never fully understand) force your religious views and morals on me.

If you do not want an abortion, don't get one. If you don't want your daughter to get an abortion, teach her the appropriate birth control methods, not abstinence only. The only way to prevent more abortions is to have the right education system in place to promote birth control and STD prevention. Most of you also need to educate yourselves mor eon the science of abortion. You protesters, on campus and outside of the clinics, are completely unaware that those vile posters you are holding up over your heads are not even a true representation of abortion practices. Educate yourselves.

I am fully opposed to forced pregnancy and the government taking away MY civil right to choose what to do with MY body.

I am not pro-drunk driving, I am "pro-choice." I don't think anyone is pro-drunk driving. I drove drunk once and I have never regretted it. Given the same circumstances, I would do it again.
If you don't want to drive drunk, don't do it. If you don't want your child to drive drunk, teach him or her to use a breathalyzer before getting behind the wheel, don't simply teach them to abstain from driving drunk. The only way to prevent more drunk driving is to have the right education system in place to promote breathalyzer use and cirrhosis of the liver prevention. Most of you also need to educate yourselves more on the science of drunk drivingt. You protesters, on campuses, are completely unaware that those vile posters you are holding up over your heads are not even a true representation of accidents caused by drunk driving. Educate yourselves.
I am fully opposed to forced staying where I'm at when I'm drunk and the government taking away MY civil right to choose what to do with MY body. If I want to drive drunk, I will.

      • Posted By: ck3313 @ 11/04/2008 10:00:05 AM

That is also true about drunk driving. And there are consequences with drunk driving, you are putting many more lives in danger when you get behind the wheel of a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs. I have never done it, nor I never will. However, when it comes to abortion, the only one it truly affects is me, and my body. No one else.

Abortion is a faith-based issue. The question of when that fertilized ovum becomes a human being is answered in a wide variety of ways by different belief systems. Some believe human life begins at the point of fertilization. Some believe that human life begins when the baby can sustain itself outside its mother's womb. There are numerous variations in between these two. A person who is pro-choice simply believes that he/she has no right to force their belief system onto someone else. I am pro-life for myself. But I believe my government should be pro-choice so that those citizens who do not follow my particular beliefs can make their decision freely, and privately, and if the difficult choice to have an abortion is made, that they may do so with good medical care. We can't always presume to know what brings a woman to make such a difficult decision.

    • Posted By: cr8zyc00ter @ 11/04/2008 8:56:08 AM

But we can not allow Women and young Girls to do so uninfomed which is what is happening by not forcing the Father of the Child to be included in the desicion and for young Girls the Parents of both her and the father (who would usually also be a minor) to be involved in the desicion.......these unborn babies are not Cancers that can just be cut out and forgotten they are human beings and an informed desicion needs to be made...not a rash desicion based on half truths that the Abortion Clinics are giving.......come on we need to Stand up for those who can't stand and Speak for those who have no voice.

what is your fight for victims of incest / rape to receive the morning after pill? why! would we force this?

        • Posted By: Peanut Santiago @ 11/04/2008 9:58:56 AM

Because they believe that the morning after pill causes an early abortion.... Also, some are against any kind of artificial birth control.... ***** Abortion happens, legal or illegal....you can't stop it. Just make it safe for women if it is legal or unsafe if it is not.

Seems to me that how a candidate (or anyone) views life affects how they view everything else. And every life is equally important, or none is important. How you view life affects every other area of life & society: how you choose to spend your time and money, what you choose to do with your life, the things about which you are passionate. And yes, I absolutely vote pro-life.

    • Posted By: anthonyva @ 11/04/2008 9:57:10 AM

what about the life of the child after they are born? are you going to help them have a LIFE - by which i am not refering to the ability to breath air but the actual life we all have to live??? if their parents can't afford to take care of the baby properly - is love going to be enough? are you going to be there to get that baby the medical attention it needs? will you ensure it has a roof over it's head and give it proper nutrition? If a person is unable to provide a LIFE to a child, and they do not meet the standards that most people, who need to adopt, are looking for - then what??? That child ends up in the "system" which goes directly to your intolerance for the welfare system which includes foster homes and orphanages, etc. - it's a catch 22 you see, and this is where your argument is severely flawed.

A parent has the right to choose how that child is raised but not whether they should be brought into a world that will inevitably lead to pocerty, crime, disease, etc - if they are not fortunate enough to have been born with a silver spoon in their mouth.

I don't think how someone can vote for an abortion candidate. Listen to Fr. Corapi and his very straight forward response to voting for a pro-choice candidate! This is not just the teaching and beliefs of one Catholic, this is the voice of the entire Mystical Body of Christ-The CHURCH! Please walch.

Also, being called a "single-issue voter" is a weak argument. If slavery were still prominent today, would you not vote for Abraham Lincoln because he is in favor of giving African Americans their rights? If you were strong minded and willed on that issue, you would vote for him! Why not vote in favor of THE MOST BASIC HUMAN RIGHT? LIFE IS!

Please, vote with your well-formed consciences.

    God bless!

The one thing I have not heard in this discussion is where is the male responsibility!! Do males not have any responsibility as far as birth control? THAT IS THE TRUE PROBLEM WITH OUR SOCIETY!! If we really wanted to stop abortion -- make it illegal for unmarried males to have sex without wearing a condom. Oh yes I forget, that is an invasion of their privacy.

  • Posted By: dadej @ 11/04/2008 9:55:18 AM

It is very ignorant to trust anyone to take care of the living in this nation if they condone killing the unborn. God is not mocked and this country will have to pay for this huge sin. I believe that we may start paying today with the loss of our freedom if Obama is elected.

  • Posted By: readre @ 11/04/2008 9:55:14 AM

    Reality check!!!

Setting aside partial-birth abortion, Obama does not even oppose live-birth abortion, a process whereby the doctor medically induces labor by inserting medication into the birth canal near the cervix causing the cervix to be stimulated and open early. When this occurs, the small second or third trimester pre-term, fully formed baby falls out of the uterus, sometimes alive. It is then not killed but, rather, set aside and "left to die," which can take as long as eight hours. Make no mistake, this is a baby - in one particular reported incident, 1/2 pound and 10 inches long - bigger than a hamster, bigger than some other fully-grown species in the animal world. This is not just urban myth, it is fully documented in senate hearings - Hearing on H.R.4292, The "Born-Alive Infant Protection Act of 2000." Obama opposed this act that would protect infants that survive an abortion. It's not a secret, it's not sensationalism... it's the truth. How far are we going to go? With every choice to support abortion or to choose not to do anything, we go further and further down the slippery slope. Where will it end? Will our consciences be so numb at some point that is seems logical to kill a child if we no longer want it?

And, if live-birth abortion is okay, why do we have laws that prosecute women who give birth and then promptly throw their unwanted newborn into a trash can? What's the difference? Where's the logic?

If you are Christian and have yet to vote, or even if you have, please read this speech by Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver. It is very informative on the responsibilities Christians have when they elect their officials.

Great article! I am a Pro-Choice Catholic and it is nice to see what I have know for years. There are many of my faith who feel as I do. We just don't publicize it. Abortion is a no win issue. Abortions have been performed as long as pregnancies have occurred. We hear so much rhetoric about protecting the unborn. What about everyone else?

    • Posted By: mmsiciliana@dls.net @ 11/04/2008 9:54:28 AM

Sorry, "pro-choice Catholic" is an oxymoron. If you're "pro-choice" you can't also be a Catholic.

  • Posted By: Meems @ 11/04/2008 9:54:08 AM

Over the years I have watched with dismay the pro-life supporters and marvel at the energy they expend on protesting abortions. Yet, by comparison, they expend porportionately much less energy in finding solutions that would help prevent the need for abortions. How many pro lifers are willing to adopt children or incest, rape? How many protestor are willing to house, nourish and support mothers along, struggling with unexpected pregnancies? How many are willing to foot the enormous medical bills incurred by an at risk mother in her efforts to not only preserve her baby, but also save her life. When these "do0gooders" put money where their mouths are, then I will join them with placards held high protesting pro-choice.

Christians vote Republican hoping to save lives, but the party never comes through for them. They vote to their own economic harm and they know it. Life is more important than money. However, what about taking care of the lives already born?

I should add to my comment...it's God's choice to take care of the already born...if they choose Him.
